Description:
Diarrhoea, claiming over three million young lives in the world every year, is the second biggest killer of children in developing countries. Using data for over 13,000 children in rural India, under the age of 3 years, this paper examines the relative effects of the different factors-inter alia the quality of the water supply, mother's literacy, housing conditions, and the level of development of the villages in which the children lived-contributing to diarrhoea. The paper highlights the importance of two factors: that children born to undernourished mothers may be more susceptible to infection than children whose mothers are well nourished, and that good hygienic practices within the home, such as washing hands with soap before feeding a child, can reduce the incidence of diarrhoea. The paper also quantifies the relative strength of the factors that determine whether mothers do so. The results emphasize the importance of mothers being literate, of household affluence and of institutional support (through the availability of trained midwives and mother and child centres in villages) in promoting domestic hygiene. ... Product Description
E. coli diarrhoea is the most important source ofmortality in newborn and weaned pigs and causes highlosses in the pig industry. It is often caused byEnterotoxigenic E. coli (ETEC). Of the three E. coliF4 variants, F4ac are most often isolated in pigsaffected by ETEC diarrhoea. The receptor gene forF4ab and F4ac (F4bcR) is inherited as dominant traiton porcine chromosome 13. By multipoint linkageanalysis, we assigned F4bcR to the interval SW207 ?MUC4-8227 ? S0075. F4bcR was strongly associatedwith MUC4 g.8227C>G, and g.7947A>G that was equallyreliable for prediction of susceptibility to E. coliF4ab/F4ac infection. Haplotypes of SNPs in TNK2 didnot coincide with the phenotype in 8.5% of the pigs.None of the SNPs were located in the regulatoryregions or changed amino acids. Inheritance of F4adadhesion is unclear. Aside from fully resistant andsusceptible adhesion phenotypes, some pigs belongedto an intermediate phenotype. Offspring from highly susceptible parents showed clearly more adhesive enterocytes than offspring from resistant or weak adhesive parents. This indicates that F4ad adhesionis genetically influenced by one or severalreceptors. ... Read more

Product Description
Aim of this study was to select environmental E. coli isolates that produced colicins against the swine pathogen E. coli K88+. In initial evaluation using a modified plate method with 18 colicinogenic E. coli constructs, colicins E3, E4, E5, E9, Ia, K and N were found to possess inhibitory activity against 12 ETEC K88+ strains. A total of 463environmental isolates from cattle rumen, cattle feces, pig feces and hog manure-amendedsoil were screened for colicin production by a modified plate test. Further, colicinogenic isolates were screened for five toxin genes LT, STa, STb, VT1 and VT2 as well as K88 (F4) fimbriae using PCR reactions. Fourteen non-pathogenic isolates weresubjected to characterization of colicin genes by PCR using 9 new primer sequences, antibiotic susceptibilities and substrate utilization. Two potential probiotic strains of E. coli, UM-2 and UM-7 which produced colicins that could utilize potato starch and inulin were selected for in-vitro competition with E. coli K88+ strain 2-12. In vitrocompetition between the synbiotics and E. coli K88+ revealed inhibition of E. coli K88+. Animal testing of these strains is currently being undertaken. ... Read more
