Product Description
Velo-cardio-facial syndrome is a relatively new syndrome--the genetic test to determine its presence has only been available since 1994. There are currently no books available to address the educational needs of this population, yet virtually every child with velo-cardio-facial syndrome needs special educational programming. This new book effectively blends the thoughtful research that has transpired within the past ten years with practical and current educational strategies to help meet the needs of children with VCFS and similar developmental disabilities.

To first address the scientific information that is needed to understand the syndrome and the implications of current research, expert contributors present the results of studies involving brain abnormalities, language/learning profiles, and psychiatric/behavioral difficulties. These valuable chapters are written in a reader-friendly manner to help parents, professionals, and teachers gain useful and necessary comprehension of the unique characteristics of the VCFS population.

The second part of the book is a practical guide to educating a child with VCFS from birth through adulthood. Divided into the various stages of development from preschool to adulthood, it includes information regarding the necessary tests special education teams should run, typical difficulties associated with learning, changes that occur with ability as the child matures (drop in IQ scores and increased learning challenges), as well as behavioral problems in the school setting. Each section includes discussions of the learning challenges and accomodations that can be used at school and at home during that stage of maturity. The authors also present meaningful advice on issues such as friendships, private vs. public school placement, job training, and other pertinent decisions that affect the VCFS child's everyday life.

A pioneer of its kind, this book is an essential resource for teachers, parents, physicians, and therapists of children with velo-cardio-facial syndrome. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Annoyed I purchased this book
I figured for $50 this book would be an investment, something we'd use long term.I was disappointed when it arrived, it's seriously so small!!For $50!Crazy.And then I couldn't even read the book because it was put together wrong.I can't speak to it's usefulness because I sent mine back immediately. What a waste.

5-0 out of 5 stars VCFS
Excellent source for understaging Velo Cardio Facial Syndrome. Will help parents of VCFS chidren help cope with the short comings of school administrations, many un aware of children with this disability.

5-0 out of 5 stars a brilliant insight into V.C.F.S
Educating Children with V.C.F.S is a book I wish I had had from the begining. It covers ALL aspects of teaching a child with a 22q deletion and throws light on a lot of the often perplexing conundrum of problems associated with the syndrome. Highly recommended for parents an educators alike and although maybe a bit pricey, worth every cent.

5-0 out of 5 stars Educating Children with VeloCardioFacial Syndrome
This book is amazing! It is a "must have" for parents, educators and physicians dealing with children who have been diagnosed with velocardiofacial syndrome. I wish that someone would have handed me this book when our son was diagnosed with 22Q11.2 (velocardiofacial syndrome). Educators especially can glean helpful information from it's pages to better understand the cognitive defecits presented by the syndrome. It is worth every penny of the price. Thank You Donna Cutler-Landsman for taking to time to compile such a comprehensive and concise book.

Editorial Review

Product Description
With an estimated human population prevalence of 1:2000, Velo-Cardio-Facial Syndrome (VCFS) is the second-most common multiple anomaly syndrome in humans and almost all children with the syndrome have speech and language impairments that are generally recognized to be complex and difficult to treat. However, the authors of this new book contend that treatment techniques are not at all complex and perceived problem arise from a basic lack of understanding, and lack of education in graduate courses. To demonstrate and to provide clinicians with expert guidance, they have produced here a comprehensive combination of text and video demonstrating the clinical features of Velo-Cardio-Facial Syndrome (VCFS); the communication phenotype in VCFS; the natural history of speech and language in VCFS; diagnostic procedures necessary for assessing speech and language disorders in VCFS; the treatment of speech and language impairment in VCFS; and outcomes, demonstrated by video on an accompanying DVD. ...
