Product Description
Diverticular disease is a digestive disorder caused by enflamed diverticula, or pouches, in the colon. A common cause is constipation due to lack of fibre in the diet. Diverticulitis is extremely common, and a half to two thirds of all people in Europe and North America will experience it, while around 6,500 people a year are admitted to hospital because of diverticulitis in the UK, and 440,000 in the US. Many more require outpatient treatment. Symptoms may include cramps, bloating, constipation, fever, nausea, vomiting, chills, abdominal pain, and rectal bleeding, while complications may include peritonitis. Treatment is with antibiotics, though lifestyle factors such as diet and exercise can make a great difference; a person's state of mind can also be an influence. This book looks at the treatment and self-management of diverticular disease - while the doctor can help, much can be done by the individual to minimise the effect of this condition. Subjects covered include: types of diverticular disease; diagnosis and tests; treatment, including laxatives, fluids and antibiotics; exercise and rest; diet and probiotics; and emotions and living with diverticular disease. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars title is misleading
I bought this book on the recommendation of the 2 reviews and was disappointed. The disease is called Diverticulosis, the infection is called diverticulitis. This book is good for information for preventing the infection and dealing with the disease, but it does not give any information about coping once infected.

5-0 out of 5 stars Coping with Diverticulitis
By far, the most information about diverticulitis I have read since being diagnosed with this condition. Easy to read, hard to put down.

I recommend this book to book to EVERYONE!!! Very much information.. I am still reading it.. Although I am ill... the book is fantastic.. Any questions or concerns, this book has answers.. You will love the book as well..I enjoyed this very much.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just the book I needed.
Answers key questions about preventing and treating Acid Reflus and other gastrointestional problems.

My only complaint about the book is it should show some diagrams of the organs involved explanations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gastrointestinal Health by Miskovitz
This is an excellent medicinal reference on the workings of the
gastrointestinal system. The book is written from the perspective
of conventional medicine. It discusses classic gastrointestinal
issues; such as, difficulty in swallowing, gas, non-cardiac
discomfort, chest pain, nausea, abdominal pain, unexplained weight loss and constipation. Abdominal pain on the left side is associated with IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome). Pain on the right
side of the abdomen may be Crohns related. Diarrhea and rectal
bleeding are the classic symptoms of Crohns disease. The CT scan,
MRI, endoscopy and colorectal examinations are the classic
invasive techniques for detection. Non-invasive tests involve
analysis of the breath, blood tests, stool and fecal occult exams. Duodenal ulcers are caused by H-pylori. Standard treatments are H2 blockers, pepcid AC and proton pump inhibitors.
Prilosec is a classic proton inhibitor.

The work is a must for any health enthusiast. The problems
described are classic middle-age conditions encountered by
large portions of the population for a variety of reasons
ranging from genetics to junk food consumption. The work is
a solid investment for the price charged. Acquiring this volume will help you to discuss any of the symptomatology intelligently
with your primary care physician or medical specialist. ... Read more

This is a good book showing how important it is to work with your body in all the elimination processes in stead of waiting or restricting.

3-0 out of 5 stars Wacky...good bathroom reading
The concepts set forth in this book are a bit too farfetched to be believed, but they are thought-provoking to say the least.I agree with the general premise that many disorders may originate from insufficient elimintarion. However, the writers take the point too far.The letters at the end make for a good laugh.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great product, awesome price, great service!!!
Just a note to let you know that you have great products, awesome prices, but most of all, great service!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Clearly defective
A book that displays two prominent topics in its title, namely "IBS" and "Diverticulosis" and then proceeds never to mention one of those topics again ("Diverticulosis") is clearly defective.IBS and Diverticulosis can be very similar symptomatically but are by no means identical or even synonymous. The title is so misleading as to be unacceptable by any reasonable literary standard.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing, almost miraculous help
I was diagnosed with IBS many years ago when I was having three or more episodes each week.My life was unmanageable with it; I couldn't leave the house because I'd be fine one minute, and in a cold sweat and excruciating pain ten minutes later.Often, there was no warning.

My condition had built up slowly, over a period of about five years.Initially, doctors thought that it was a food allergy. In time, they realized that I had a chronic condition--probably IBS but possibly diverticulitis or something related--but their advice involved an extreme (and unrealistic) limited diet and painkillers that knocked me out for nearly a day.Their advice seemed like a band aid, not a cure or even a workable solution.

I was becoming an anxious recluse, afraid to leave the house or schedule anything important. The pain was beyond anything I'd experienced, except in childbirth.

I bought this book out of desperation, and started applying some of the dozens of helpful tips right away. Most worked, but a few didn't.(They didn't make it worse, they just didn't help.)

Gradually, I narrowed my focus to three or four recommendations that helped the most, and I used them every time.(For me, enteric-coated peppermint oil capsules are vital at the earliest symptoms.I learned about those readily available capsules in this book.)

My IBS episodes became shorter. They "aftershocks" (lesser episodes that followed a major IBS attack) were gentler and smaller in number. In time, they stopped altogether.

It's been over four years since my last full-blown IBS episode.During those years, I've had three minor incidents, but nothing that kept me in bed for a full day afterwards.

This book is the single most important reason why I was able to resume a relatively normal lifestyle after being pretty much housebound for close to a year.Years later, I can barely remember how awful life was when I constant worried about an IBS episode interrupting everything from professional meetings and my kids' school picnics, to grocery shopping.

My doctors were amazed and impressed at my improvement, and time has proved that my condition is stable now.

Some doctors estimate that IBS and related issues are second only to the common cold as reasons why people call in sick at work.Whether or not that's true, I was amazed when I started admitting that I have IBS.Close to half of my friends confessed that they suffered from IBS episodes as well.

Without exception, everyone I've talked with who has IBS--including my mother--has used this book with rave results. Many of them have referred other people to this book, too.

This book changed my life for the better.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, common-sense information.
This book holds good, common-sense advice that seems sound and clear. If you do not know a lot about diverticulitis, this is a good book with which to begin. It does hold a small amount of unique advice that is not usually found in other books or articles on the subject.

If you are more advanced in your knowledge of the disease, browsing through it would be beneficial, but owning it might be a waste of bookshelf space.

3-0 out of 5 stars Too much ax grinding
This very short book has some good suggestions regarding diet and exercise to relieve diverticulitis. Unfortunately, the author spends too much time bashing the standard medical system and extolling the virtues of naturopathy. In addition, the suggested diet is going to be too spartan for most folks to follow long term unless they are already into "natural" foods. If you can find this book for a couple of bucks it might be worth while, otherwise you can read just about any book on natural health and get the same infomation. Just eat whole foods and walk. And if you aren't willing to go that dietary route then it is not worth your time or money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helped Me
This book helps you deal with the frustration of the pain, I highly recommend this to anyone dealing with this disease.

5-0 out of 5 stars Diverticulitis
Once you set aside the Author's rantings about Science, Food Manufactures and the Medical Society, this book is GREAT.

It conirmed some of the action I had already taken regarding a fast during a bout, but the most important and revelationary information I got is the "Toilet Drill" and "Abdominal Ecercises". Never had I ever been told how to empty my bowels to avoid stress on the stomach. That information alone, was well worth the book.

Dont give up on the book, the 104 pages was information I already knew, but the last 14 are worth it. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
Severe abdominal pain is a common complaint encountered by primary care and emergency room physicians. Caused by many conditions, including appendicitis and diverticulitis, severe abdominal pain may be a diagnostic challenge. Although different in many ways, appendicitis and diverticulitis are caused by obstruction of a blind pouch that leads to inflammation of the structure and surrounding tissue. Appendicitis and diverticulitis are 2 of the most frequently diagnosed causes of complicated intra-abdominal infections. Combined, appendicitis and diverticulitis comprise > 80% of all community-acquired complicated intra-abdominal infections. These conditions are serious and require prompt diagnosis and treatment. Because complicated intra-abdominal infections are typically polymicrobial, a wide variety of causative pathogens are identified, including Gram-positive and Gram-negative aerobic and anaerobic microorganisms. Treatment for these disorders often requires surgical and medical management. Although surgical intervention can be the definitive treatment for complicated intra-abdominal infections, successful management of appendicitis and diverticulitis will depend on appropriate selection of antimicrobials and optimal duration of therapy to maximize the coverage of potential causative pathogens and to minimize the development of resistance. Guidelines for empiric treatment of complicated intra-abdominal infections recommend broad-spectrum antimicrobials as monotherapy or in combinations, including standard antimicrobial regimens, such as piperacillin/tazobactam, imipenem/cilastatin, and piperacillin-tazobactam/amoxicillin-clavulanate regimens, and fluoroquinolone-based regimens. This review article compares the presentations and treatments of these common complicated intra-abdominal infections. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This book saved my life!
Perhaps the best review I can give of this book and the impact it had on my life is a letter I wrote to the author, Stephen Demirjian:

"Thank you for saving my life. I mean that sincerely - I'm not a guy prone to melodrama. No, you didn't save my life in the CPR and mouth to mouth sort of way; I think it might be better than that.

I had been sick for some 18 years on and off, mostly on and always on for the preceding couple of years. At the time I read your book I was spending perhaps 2 or 3 hours per day in the bathroom on the toilet. I`d wonder if this was really a life worth living and think not. I was completely defeated and absolutely demoralized.I had no hope. I couldn't really go anywhere, at least not anywhere that didn't have a private bathroom at a moment's notice. I was shackled.

So when I saw the picture on the book's front covered I ordered it immediately. And in reading it, I discovered hope for a guy like me.Perhaps most importantly, I identified with you on the emotional aspect of our illnesses. That's vital. While a well person can intellectually understand the pain, they can't possible understand the underlying emotional component. How it feels to be sick day in and out and how it feels to sit there on the porcelain day after day after day. That came out strongly in your book. And of course you provided the solution too, something I edged into slowly for a few days. Until I got results, nearly immediate results. It was amazing.

It's been over two years now and I feel awesome. Once a day, maybe two I'm on the toilet, normal results to be expected.Expected! Sure, I've had flares and a bout or two of diverticulitis however my worst days today are equal to some of my best days "then". I get to travel again, be with my family, enjoy life as much as I am able and go anywhere I want to. I have hope and am no longer demoralized or defeated. THAT'S the life you saved."

It's actually been over three years now and every word of this still applies. If you have issues related to IBD, IBS or other bowel/digestive health problems, I would not hesitate to invest in your health by purchasing this book. It remains one of the single best and most significant investments I have ever made.

5-0 out of 5 stars Book on IBD and IBS
I purchased this book for my 24-yr old son who has Ulcerative Colitus.I'm not sure if he has looked at it, but I found it very informative. There are many helpful suggestions, a few recipes, and even a website and chat opportunity available if you so desire.I did e-mail the author, and he was kind enough to send a personal reply. I am pleased with the book and it arrived in a matter of days.

5-0 out of 5 stars Empowering
Since our son was diagnosed with Crohn's Disease, I have wanted to talk to someone who has experienced IBD firsthand. This book is the next best thing to a personal conversation. The author has painstakingly documented his struggle to regain his quality of life and in the details, I have found answers to many of my questions. After reading this book, I no longer feel helpless.

5-0 out of 5 stars An inspirational guide
As someone who suffers from irritable bowel syndrome, I am always looking for books that offer some good advice about ways to deal with this condition. I even went to the library once and checked out every single book they had on the topic. Even with all the books I've read, I've never found one that is as uplifting as Gut Help. It manages to be informative while making such an unpleasant topic entertaining. Most books on digestive disorders tell you the symptoms and what you can expect, but do little to encourage you or let you know that your condition can be improved. Gut Help is different. It is written by someone that really experienced the condition and found a way to get well. It is written with humor, compassion, and inspiration. I especially enjoyed the section where Demirjian lists all of the "roadblocks" than can occur on the way to recovery and what you can do to overcome them. It's wonderful that he used his struggle and experience to perfect his method and share it with others. You can really feel he cares. I like the fact that the book isn't written by some doctor that has only studied the condition, but by a person who has gone through it and has come up with a process that works out of necessity. After reading Gut Help, I feel inspired to begin making changes to improve my condition and to face life with the positive attitude that Demirjian does.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice to know I'm Not Alone
Overall a terrific resource. After struggling with digestive difficulties for years, I know first hand how isolating these types of illnesses can be.It was great to finally see someone who shared in my challenges come forward and "tell it like it is."This book has done wonders for my health and as a result, my self-esteem.Not only does it make me feel more in control of my health and wellbeing, but it is nice to see someone supporting an option other than surgery for my illness. Thank you for helping me get my life back! ... Read more

Product Description
Webster's bibliographic and event-based timelines are comprehensive in scope, covering virtually all topics, geographic locations and people. They do so from a linguistic point of view, and in the case of this book, the focus is on "Diverticulitis," including when used in literature (e.g. all authors that might have Diverticulitis in their name). As such, this book represents the largest compilation of timeline events associated with Diverticulitis when it is used in proper noun form. Webster's timelines cover bibliographic citations, patented inventions, as well as non-conventional and alternative meanings which capture ambiguities in usage. These furthermore cover all parts of speech (possessive, institutional usage, geographic usage) and contexts, including pop culture, the arts, social sciences (linguistics, history, geography, economics, sociology, political science), business, computer science, literature, law, medicine, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and other physical sciences. This "data dump" results in a comprehensive set of entries for a bibliographic and/or event-based timeline on the proper name Diverticulitis, since editorial decisions to include or exclude events is purely a linguistic process. The resulting entries are used under license or with permission, used under "fair use" conditions, used in agreement with the original authors, or are in the public domain. ... Read more

This CD-ROM uses next-generation search technology that allows complete indexing and makes all files on the disc fully searchable. For patients, practical information is provided in clearly written patient education documents. For medical professionals, doctor reference tools and texts have detailed technical information and clinical background material.

This thoroughly researched collection presents vital information from many authoritative sources: National Institutes of Health (NIH), Centers for Disease Control (CDC), Food and Drug Administration, and the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) with the National Digestive Diseases Information Clearinghouse (NDDIC). Contents include clinical and medical information, with information on signs, symptoms, testing, diagnosis, treatment, and more.

This CD-ROM has over 40,000 pages reproduced using Adobe Acrobat PDF software and Reader software is included. There is no other reference that is as fast, convenient, comprehensive, and portable!

Our CD-ROMs are privately-compiled collections of official public domain U.S. government files and documents - they are not produced by the federal government. They are designed to provide a convenient user-friendly reference work, utilizing the benefits of the Acrobat format to uniformly present thousands of pages that can be rapidly reviewed or printed without untold hours of tedious searching and downloading. This book-on-a-disc makes a superb reference work and educational tool for patients and their families, physicians, and other medical professionals.
