5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book
My daughter has Down Syndrome and I got this book upon recomendation by a physical therapist.I would recommend this book to every parent who is interested in participating in early intervention for their down syndrome child. The book is written very well for the lay person. For those of you with children who have down syndrome, it's a tough and wonderful road and god bless you!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for any child with low tone
Easy to understand, step by step ideas for promoting motor development in any child who has low tone (hypotonia), not just children with Down Syndrome. Provides clear photos as well as written instruction. This introduces the same ideas I teach parents as a therapist in the parent-infant education program.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
This is a great book for learning about gross motor development. As with the other books like it, this book follows stages rather than ages, so the user can focus on the particular child and his/her development.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent step-by-step
Our daughter has DS and is having some GMS issues. However, this book provides instruction on how to progress to each step toward walking. The therpist we use has began to instruct us on some of these steps, but our daughter has already been through them, so it is keeping her ahead of the game. I've heard a lot about Patricia Winders, and I wouldn't hesitate to buy other books of hers as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Buy!
This book not only tells you the progression a child with Down Syndrome should follow, it then gives you suggestions of things to work on and checklists at the end of each chapter so you know what your child should be doing before you really move on to harder skills. Wonderful help for both a parent and a professional! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Babies with Down Syndrome
This is a fantastic book for new parents or those newly involved with children with Down Syndrome. It helps to dispell negatives and impose the positives for those who have no knowledge at all.The only reason I did not give the book five stars is because some of the information relates to American systems and I live in New Zealand so much of this was irrelevant.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must have book!
My son and daughter in law recieved this book from the hosptial...with the news that our little one has Down Syndrome.I bought this book for myself and the rest of the family.It's a wonderful uplifting book - full of information of what we are all going through and what to expect and how great life can and will be.

2-0 out of 5 stars Don't let this be the first book for a new mom!
When my son was born with DS, all I wanted to hear was that this was a good thing. This book was factual, yes, but it was somewhat depressing for a new mom. Reading the comments from parents was especially discouraging for my husband and me. I was searching for that joy and privilege that I had understood parents of DS kids to have... but couldn't find it. Eventually, I saw other books, calendars, videos, and talked to the self-proclaimed "lucky" parents whom I had sensed were out there. I just wish I had done things in the opposite order.

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative
Absolutely amazing -- full of clear, well-outlined and detailed information, much of which I had previously not known or failed to appreciate its significance and relevance. Even a professional could benefit.

Book Description
For children with Down syndrome, communicating is just as urgent and essential as it is for anyone else.In the newly updated and expanded edition of Communication Skills in Children with Down Syndrome, Libby Kumin offers comprehensive, authoritative, and practical advice based on her nearly 25 years of firsthand experience with kids with Down syndrome.She explains the role of a SLP, the stages of communication development, and how certain characteristics of Down syndrome, such as low muscle tone, hearing loss, and cognitive delays, can slow progression of those skills.Delays can lead to frustration and other problems for children who do not have intelligible speech until age 2 or later.

EARLY COMMUNICATION SKILLS FOR CHILDREN WITH DOWN SYNDROME focuses on speech and language development from birth through the stage of making 3-word phrases, which is often around kindergarten age, but can occur later.This book offers a wealth of information on intelligibility issues, hearing loss, apraxia (difficulty planning oral-motor movements), and other factors that affect communication for children with Down syndrome.It explains how to prepare for and understand the results of speech-language assessment, and goes on to describe what to expect in the years ahead when a child enters elementary school.

Throughout the new edition, the author incorporates the latest research on Down syndrome and communication development.She has added new chapters on high- and low-tech augmentative and alternative communication options, as well as articulation and literacy (how reading aids in the learning of language, speech, and auditory skills).New checklists on evaluating and treating speech problems, and numerous home activities designed to help children master each stage of communication development have also been added. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars excellent suggestions and explanations
Bought for use in a parent-infant education program for children infant to 3. Written with parents in mind so that it is not full of medical-speak, and full of suggestions, this is a good book for anyone working with or parenting a child with low tone or multiple issues that interfere with language development.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very informative
I wish I had time to read the whole thing at once, it's full of helpful info. I recommend it to anyone working with or parenting a child with down syndrome. Something that is partcularly nice about it as well as the other books like it is that they don't talk in ages but in stages. This way you can follow your child, and not some outward source that determines what they should be doing and when.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent instructional resource
Written for both parents and professional caretakers, Early Communication Skills For Children With Down Syndrome by Libby Kumin (who has 23 years of experience in working with children with Down syndrome) is very highly recommended as an informational resource by parents, caretakers, teachers, and anyone else charged with the responsibility of dealing with Down Syndrome children. With a focus on speech and language development, through the stage of making 3-word phrases, Early Communication Skills For Children With Down syndrome offers in-depth insight, home communication activities, ways to help one's child learn basic rules of conduct, and much more. An excellent instructional resource, Early Communication Skills For Children With Down Syndrome is a welcome and necessary addition to institutional speech pathology and Special Education resource and reference collections. ... Product Description
Parents of children with Down syndrome and other intellectual disabilities are accustomed to paying close attention to their child's physical, cognitive, and emotional development. This proactive approach should also include their child's sexual development, which for many parents may not seem as obvious or urgent, especially to those with young children.

Drawing on her unique background as both a sexual educator and mother of a child with Down syndrome, the author blends factual information and practical ideas for teaching children with Down syndrome about their bodies, puberty, and sexuality. This book gives parents the confidence to speak comfortably about these sometimes difficult subjects.

In an easy-to-read, non-clinical style, the book covers relevant issues and concerns for children of all ages, such as:
Labeling & explaining private body parts;

Identifying & expressing emotions;

Respecting personal space;

Teaching self-care & hygiene;

Understanding norms of privacy;

Understanding gender identity;

Showing appropriate levels of affection.

It also covers later issues that affect teenagers and young adults, including:
Anticipating and understanding puberty;

Dealing with periods, bras for girls;

Experiencing erections, wet dreams for boys;

Relating to the opposite sex;

Sharing parental values about sexuality;

Explaining sexual relationships;

Preventing sexual abuse;

Understanding how Down syndrome affects puberty & fertility rates.

Each chapter highlights important points with key messages, teaching activities, parental pauses, and anecdotes, all of which prompt readers to stop and consider concepts or values associated with a particular topic. The final chapter covers the special concerns of parents who are now teaching teenaged or adult children about sexuality for the first time. It concludes with extensive appendices containing invaluable teaching materials and illustrations of body parts and functions. ... Read more

This is the best book on this topic I have ever seen!We will soon be responsible for my 44 year old sister-in-law.This book is unlocking some of the mystery of her actions and habits.I have already recommended this book to other parents of down syndrome children.I'm impressed enough to put this book on my keep for life shelf! Thank you so much for offering such an informative book! Keep up the good work. Jean

5-0 out of 5 stars It about time.
Adults with Down Syndrome are often misunderstood and a lack of patience on the part of the listener adds to the frustration. This authoritative book written by physicians provides accurate information for parents, caregivers, physicians, teachers and anyone needing to better understand persons with Down Syndrome. Although I have found the information very helpful in understanding some reasons why persons with Down Syndrome have characteristic needs and behaviors, I fear that the use of this information could lead to an over generalization and dismissal of behavior simply as a part of the Down Syndrome. To the credit of the authors, the book talks about this issue and appropriately supports the attitude of treating persons with Down Syndrome as individuals and looking for personal histories when trying to understand their needs. The infomation provided gives us many things to consider when trying to understand a person with Down Syndrome.I would whole heartedly recommend this book. It is about time this information came out in a very easy to read and well organized manner.

5-0 out of 5 stars Understanding Adult Down Syndrome behavior

5-0 out of 5 stars Insight at Last!
Ever since we were kids, I've been told my brother wouldn't live much longer. He's 18 months older than I am and has Down Syndrome. First the doctors said he wouldn't live past 10. Then he was expected to die before the age of 20. He did have some health problems, but none were life-threatening, and he grew up to be strong and athletic. Then, as he reached 40, I read reports claiming that "all" adults with DS would develop Alzheimer's Disease, usually in their 40s. This was an awful prospect! But now, at 53, he continues to be much the same - a little more set in his ways, perhaps - but healthy, capable, and active. When I learned about the book, "Mental Wellness in Adults with Down Syndrome", I ordered it immediately and have read it with great interest. It was fascinating to learn that adults with DS are no more likely to die young than anyone else, as long as they receive appropriate medical care, and that the incidence of Alzheimer's in this population is no more common that in the general population. Rather, it has been common for health issues to be ignored or not treated because they are often attributed to Down Syndrome instead of a treatable condition. And misunderstandings in the medical community of what is normal mental functioning in adults with DS have led to misdiagnoses of Alzheimers in many cases. This book has been a real eye-opener for me, and helped me understand my brother and appreciate him even more. It's about time!!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Another Great book by Pat Oelwein!
Another great book I have used in my SDC classroom with low cognitive functioning special needs children.I would recommend it highly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource
I have used this book quite a bit with my 9 year old daughter with DS, since she was about 5. It is very well written and encouraging, full of information. I have given it to all my daughter's teachers as there are activities that can be done in a classroom.

5-0 out of 5 stars Read it early
I love this book.I wish I'd gotten it when my son was little!It provides great information about how to teach kids with DS to read, but also has great stories of real kids and their accomplishments.I'd recommend that anybody with a DS child buy the book early (when their baby is little), and read the first few chapters.It'll inspire them, mitigate some of the worries they have about their child's future, and introduce them to the important concept that although people with DS are generally slower to develop, their learning disabilities can be mitigated by teaching them in a way that is effective for the way they think (e.g., kids with DS are visual learners), rather than the "standard" way.My four year old has actually had better success with the Love and Learning videotapes and books than the flash card approach described in the book, but the principal is pretty much the same.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is a must have
it is extremely helpful, in only 2 months my daughter at 6 years old was up to 30 site words without picture cues.(Her first attempt at actually reading) The book contains alot of helpful activities, simply spelled out in step by step directions for anyone to understand.

Product Description
TEACHING MATH TO PEOPLE WITH DOWN SYNDROME is the book that everyone has been waiting for! Now parents and educators can use this guide to teach meaningful math to students--with and without learning problems--who struggle with understanding computation, number concepts, and when and how to use these skills.The author, an experienced educator, was inspired to write TEACHING MATH to meet the needs of hands-on learners after observing the difficulty her adult son with Down syndrome and his peers had in applying math skills to everyday life. For years, the math program explained in TEACHING MATH has been successfully used with preschoolers, children, and adults with Down syndrome, Autism Spectrum Disorder, and other cognitive disabilities. Its success lies in capitalizing on the visual learning strengths of these concrete learners and using manipulatives, games, and activities to teach and maintain motivation. A key feature of this method is the early introduction of the calculator, which allows students to progress in their understanding of math without having to memorize math facts. This book can be used to help students learn the critical math survival skills needed for living independently or help students in their math curricula at school.Book I covers introductory math skills typically taught in preschool or elementary school, but which many older students still need help with, including:Number senseRecognizingandwriting numeralsTimeCalculator skillsCountingMeasurementsAdditionPlace valueShapesSubtractionMoneyThe second volume of TEACHING MATH will focus on more advanced math skills needed for independent living, including multiplication, division, banking, budgeting, and consumer skills.TEACHING MATH gives parents and teachers high-interest, hands-on strategies and ideas for teaching math to learners of all ages. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great addition to our homeschooling curriculum!
I am very happy that I purchased this book. My daughter does not have Down's, but she is hard of hearing and has Auditory Processing type issues. She is a very visual, hand's on type of learner and this book has been a tremendous help in teaching her math and general survival skills. It is worth every penny and has given me a wealth of information. I highly, highly reccomend this book!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book
This book has some great tips on helping people with Down Syndrome learn math skills.This would be great for learners who have difficulty with traditional teaching.

4-0 out of 5 stars pretty good resource
I have been going through this quite exhaustive resource over the past couple days.It seems to be very good in content and I think I will enjoy using this with my daughter who has FAS.

The reproducible pages are great; however, I am finding it difficult to easily reproduce them since they don't lie flat.That's really the only qualm I have.It may help to also have this available in a spiral or binder format, to make the necessary reproducibles easier to reproduce!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Hands on Learners
I ordered this book to be able to work with a student who has severe brain damage and is not Down's.The activities are ones that would benefit all students, not just special needs.The activity on money and purchasing was really effective in helping my student understand the value of items and how to figure out change.

5-0 out of 5 stars Teaching Math to People With Down Syndrome and Other Hands-On Learners: Basic Survival Skills (Topics in Down Syndrome)
This is an awesome book! It gives you a step by step proven method that is almost fail-safe for teaching any concrete learner to understand math and math concepts. The only problem with this book is the misconception that the title relays in that it is not just for children with Down Syndrome. It is the method I use to teach all developmentally delayed children. I recommend it to everyone with children with delays. ... Read more

Product Description
The popular book, Fine Motor Skills for Children with Down Syndrome is now available in an expanded new edition. Written by an occupational therapist who has worked extensively with children with Down syndrome, and is also the mother a teenager with Down syndrome, this book explains the best practices and procedures for helping children master daily living skills for home, school, and an independent future. The author presents a thorough overview of the building blocks of fine motor development and how the characteristics of Down syndrome can impact the acquisition and progression of fine motor skills. She also explains the building blocks of fine motor development:StabilityBilateral coordinationSensationDexterityEarly arm and hand controlAnd important daily living skills for home and school: DressingandgroomingEatinganddrinkingCuttingGrasping a pencilPreprinting skillsDrawingPrintingCursive handwritingThere are instructions for dozens of easy home- and school-based activities, which help children gradually overcome delays and learn the fine motor skills mentioned above. The author suggests ways for parents to incorporate these exercises into as many day-to-day activities as possible, recognizing how impractical it is to constantly be in ?therapy? mode with a child.New material includes a chapter on problems with sensory processing for those who are over- or under-responsive to touch, or have unexpected reactions to sound, pain, or other sensations. Being aware of these sensitivities can open pathways to better behavior and responsiveness to therapy. Also new is information about a critical developmental step--determining when a child is ready for preprinting activities. These and many other additions make this the most up-to-date, comprehensive resource on fine motor development for children with Down syndrome. ... Read more

This is a wonderful book told from a kid's perspective!Great!We have 2 kids with Down syndrome, so this subject is very dear to our hearts.It even discusses the use or misuse of the word retarded.Loved it!

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice pictures, assumptions questionable
My daughter loves the pictures of little Jai, but the text is too detailed for young readers on one page, appropriate on all the others.My biggest concern is the line "there is nothing we can do to make Down syndrome go away" -- which teaches siblings the assumption that it should.My son has Down syndrome and I wouldn't change him for anything, nor do I wanthis sisters to think that we would prefer him to be someone else. ... Product Description
Having a baby with Down syndrome is not something most parents would willingly choose. Yet many who travel this path discover rich, unexpected rewards along the way. In this candid and poignant collection of personal stories, sixty-three mothers describe the gifts of respect, strength, delight, perspective, and love, which their child with Down syndrome has brought into their lives. The contributors to this collection have diverse personalities and perspectives, and draw from a wide spectrum of ethnicity, world views, and religious beliefs. Some are parenting within a traditional family structure; some are not. Some never considered terminating their pregnancy; some struggled with the decision. Some were calm at the time of diagnosis; some were traumatized. Some write about their pregnancy and the months after giving birth; some reflect on years of experience with their child. Their diverse experiences point to a common truth: The life of a child with Down syndrome is something to celebrate. These women have something to say--not just to other mothers but to all of us. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Moving and Inspirational
Absolutely phenomenal and beautifully written, inspirational book of essays from mothers with children who happened to be born with Down Syndrome... Many stories included the parents' "shock" after learning of the diagnosis but every story demonstrates the consistent acceptance and love of their beautiful children regardless of the diagnosis.I have identical twins with DS and this book was a bastion of hope amidst many amazingly dismal books about the down-side and "typical" delays my boys would face instead of and the very happy and high-quality life that is possible.Every parent of a child born with Down Syndrome should receive a copy of this book upon the birth of their special child.

5-0 out of 5 stars An amazing Gift
I first became aware of this book because many of the contributors are friends of mine.I thought it would be a nice book and fun to read my friends' stories.I was FLOORED by it.I began to cry as soon as I opened the cover and didn't stop until I'd read it all.The stories are funny, sad, heartwarming, thoughtful, encouraging, inspiring, touching, honest....a lot like our kids with DS.I have given several as gifts, including to my daughter's (who has DS) grandparents.It should be required reading for all OB/GYNs and Pediatricians, as well as any family with a new DS diagnosis.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not just for the DS community!
Not only is this an exceptional book for those of us whose lives have been touched one way or another by Down Syndrome (I noticed that many of the reviewers--like myself--have a family member with DS), but perhaps even more, I think this book is a must-read for the average Joe whose life *hasn't* been personally touched by DS.It should be in middle school and high school libraries, church libraries and reading rooms, doctor's office waiting rooms, etc.I noticed that a father (who happens to be a dr., too) of a child with DS said that he's bought numerous copies to hand out to new parents of children with DS.Perhaps this should be "required" reading for ALL new parents.I've always said that children who are kind and loving to my daughter tend to be that way because their parents have instilled those values in them.I think the more educated and understanding adults/parents are about children with DS, the more accepting and loving other children will be to our special children.

5-0 out of 5 stars Uplifting Reading
As the Grandmother of our wonderful new baby grandson of six weeks I was anxious to find out as much as I could about Down Syndrome. However, I did not want to be swamped with so much information that might be more off putting than helpfull at this vulnerable time. Then I found this lovely book ``Gifts``where in every story told by mothers there was love and hope and great happiness.Reading the experiences of these families and how they coped with different situations made me laugh and cry but most of all what came through to me was the unfailing determination to allow the children to live a happy and fulfilled life.This book is a great insight into the lives of families with childrern with special needs and the wonderful opportunities that are available for them.I found this book very uplifting and positive - it leaves me looking forward to the future knowing that we have all the ingredients in our family to make a great life for our grandson ; A fantastic Mam and Dad, two older brothers and a big family that loves him very much.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gifts
I love this book.I have a little boy with Down syndrome, and each mother's story resonated with me.Unlike some of the material out there, this book didn't shy away from the darkest fears and negative or downright ugly thoughts that parents of children with disabilities cycle through.The stories are so honest and heartfelt, and they helped me feel that we're not alone, and that we will be okay.The book is generally about Down syndrome, but the focus always comes back to the fact that we are talking about children first. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Down Syndrome Nutrition Handbook: A Guide to Promoting Healthy Lifestyles
Very good book
Easy to read
Very informative for parents with and without medical knowledge
Have found it very useful as a guide to my daughters nutritional needs and abilities

5-0 out of 5 stars Geat Book
Don't let the long (boring) name fool you, it is a GREAT book! As our daughter is getting older (she is 16,) she is taking control of her diet.I can't be with her all the time, so I have to teach her to eat healthy.This might sound simple, but it isn't.Well meaning relatives offer her foods she shouldn't eat, and others don't know that she has some 'nutritional issues,' like Celiac Disease.Our daughter has to know what she can and can't eat, as well as portion control. The DSNH not only has information for me as a parent, but it has worksheets and teaching activities for our daughter to help her learn healthy eating habits and good fitness activities.Did I say that it is a GREAT book?We copy off the worksheets and post them on the fridge, so our daughter can track what she eats during the day to make sure that she has 'hit' at the necessary food groups and water intake goals.She even has her fitness goals for the week.

The book covers nutritional information and needs from birth through adulthood.Section three is the one that we are working on right now: Teaching Healthy Choices to Encourage Healthy Lifestyles.It has everything from menu planning, to cooking and fitness.It's full of readable and understandable information for me and hands on learning for our daughter.That is a great combination if you ask me!

Our daughter will be the one in control of her own cooking, fitness activities and health in a few years.This book will help me help her to make a smoother transition to become a more independent and healthy adult with Down Syndrome.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good for the average person
You don't have to be an expert to understand the concepts in this book. It's written in such a way that the average person can understand the issues and put the tools to work. It tackles every feeding/eating issue that a person with Down Syndrome faces, from birth to adulthood. I strongly recommend this book for anyone who has a family member with Down Syndrome or who works with people with Down Syndrome.

Book Description
Advanced language acquisition is possible in spite of serious mental handicap.This is the conclusion reached at the end of a thorough study of the language of a Down syndrome adult woman, exhibiting virtually normal expressive and receptive grammar. This case, presented in this book, is compared to a small number of other exceptional cases of language development in mental retardation. The findings are powerful arguments against the claim that the acquisition of grammar is determined by prior nonlinguistic cognitive achievements. Moreover, data analysis and comparison with other observations in language pathology (specific language impaired children, aphasic syndromes, degenerative syndromes, dementias) suggest that linguistic knowledge consists of independent but interacting modules. These data also supply interesting arguments in favor of a conception of grammatical development as the gradual unfolding of innate species-specific dispositions, and undoubtedly this book will appeal to researchers and advanced students in language development, developmental psychopathology and special education. ...
