5-0 out of 5 stars Calvin and Hobbes cartoons
My husband has had so much fun reading these books. He loves Calvin. I bought 4 different Calvin books but this is the only one I am reviewing, although we love all of them.
Good quality softbound books.

He says they are so much more intellectually stimulating than the novels I read. I couldn't even read my novel for him interrupting to show me another hysterical cartoon.

What fun!

This series is a "Riot"!
My seven year old son LOVES these books - had to get all of them!
Any child who loves the "My Weird School" series will loved these books but what I as a parent loved about them is that they are a little longer - more of a chapter book than My Weird School and Franny K. Stein.
All in all - you can't go wrong!

5-0 out of 5 stars 2nd graders love this series!!!
Orville and Wilber Riot are hilarious!!! They pull very funny pranks. The book includes 3 stories of their adventures. It also includes instructions about how you can play the funny games and tricks just like these brothers. Our second grade class couldn't wait to hear what these brothers would do next!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very funny and entertaining
For the elementary school set, this book is filled with humor that will tickle the funny bone.Even a middle-aged dad (me) laughed out loud at a couple of sections.

The story chronicles the further adventures of the Riot Brothers after their original outing in "Snarf Attack, Underfoodle, and the Secret of Life".Besides having a more digestible title, this volume seems more tightly written and more packed with action per page, as the Brothers conspire to have more fun than ever. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Huge Help!
This book has been a huge help to me, a mother of a young drooler! We adopted our son at 19 months old and realized he had poor oral-motor skills. He was not able to eat solid foods and drooled terribly. We did get therapy for his eating and we were able to teach him how to use his mouth to chew and swallow food. Everyone told us his drooling would dissappear when he learned to eat, when he had his adenoids removed, when he learned to speak better, etc. All the surgeries and therapies helped him in some ways but not his drooling. It persisted as badly as ever. I actually had kept looking at this book online but didn't get it because I couldn't see paying $16 for such a small book and would it help anyway? Finally in desperation I bought it and was so thankful I did!! This provided me the understanding of my son's problem and so many practical ideas on how to help him. It is a small book and an easy read but so backed with information that I could actually use! None of the other professionals I worked with understood how to work with drooling like Pam Marshalla. We were able to help my son and decrease the drooling during the years he was 2 1/2 to 3 years old. Now he is 4 and almost drool free. I recommend this book to all parents who struggle with this issue. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of The Best Books In The Series
This book is actually one of the best book in the Calvin and Hobbes series. Since tis one praticullar book is not a treasury colection, the comics in this book are basically "new." The comics in this book are really funny and most of them have good points to them. Basically what I'm saing is that this book is great.

5-0 out of 5 stars A refreshing read...A refresher to all adults...
I haven't heard about this collection until my friend accidentally left hers in my house.Anticipating a lousy cartoon strip compilation, I was pleasantly surprised that it was very interesting & hilarious. As an adult, it gave me an overview of how a child's mind works.I have forgotten how imaginative & creative a child could be & realized how repressive I have been acting towards my daughter, just like Calvin's parents.

We all have been like Calvin in our earlier lives. We had a Hobbes as a best friend, a Susie whom we loved to annoy but loved as well, a transmogrifier & a babysitter who scared the hell out of us.We daydreamed in class, we played 'pretend' & lived life to the fullest.

It is so refreshing to witness such naivity once again.& though adult lives have robbed us of our youthful innocence, Calvin & Hobbes takes us back to those pure, clean fun days in a child's life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Oh Watterson, my Watterson
It is my feeling that Bill Watterson had enough integrity and ethics to prevent the syndicate from cranking out endless meaninglessly repetitive compilations. Of course, he did quit partly because he was becoming disgusted with many of the commercial aspects of his work. With most comics, even good ones, the collections get stale after a few. Watterson's collections dont. There are a dozen or so C&H compilations/collections, but you wont be dissapointed with owning the whole shebang, especially since Watterson frequently did a lot of extra work to ensure that each collection had something new to offer. Even without this extra stuff, Watterson's body of work is extensive enought to warrant owning all these collections. He was steadily cranking out great material for a decade or so, and if you are like me you will be reading some C&H weekly for as long as you are on this earth, so tons of books is not a bad thing. Basically, I wholeheartedly reccomend all the books. If you like one you will like them all. They only get better as you get to know the characters. Watterson never goes for the cheap laugh by having any of the comic's principals act out of character. As you progress through the years with C&H, and I do reccomend reading them in order, you will see how art progresses and grows when the artist is committed to excellent work. So, go get the first one, titled simply Calvin & Hobbes, and then start down the enjoyable road to making Calvin and his tiger a pleasant little chunk of your life.

5-0 out of 5 stars CALVIN AND HOBBES RULE!
Calvin and Hobbes are the funniest comic strips ever created.Although Watterson has retired and does not write them anymore, it's still great to have the collections.

"Something Under the Bed is Drooling" is a collection of earlier Calvin and Hobbes stips. The old ones are the best, I think.Every page is guarenteed to make you laugh. The book is hillarious, and is fun to watch Calvin in action as he takes on his grumpy teacher, monsters, the deranged babysitter, the girl from next store, and of course, his aggravated parents. One of the funniest strips in the book is when Calvin is writing on a sheet of paper and Hobbes asks him what he is doing.Calvin tells him that he is writing his autobiography.Hobbes is confused and tells him that he's only six.Calvin simply answers, "I only have one sheet of paper."

With great comics like Calvin and Hobbes, no one is too old to enjoy them.I say buy them all while you still can. They're great to read over and over again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Calvin's Tiger strikes back...
In my opinion, Bill Waterson is the greatest cartoonist I've seen. This was my very first C & H book and I thoroughly enjoyed it: one of the best. Unfortunately, Mr. Waterson has retired from cartooning, and Calvin & Hobbes is no more - one of the saddest tragedies of the century. Inthis book and many others, he could magically bring the cartoon to life, asonly few others could do (Jim Henderson and Charles Schulz among them).Definitely worthwhile, gives a whole lot of laughs and perhaps a new viewof life. I will always love Calvin and Hobbes as great cartoon charactersand admire Bill Waterson for his talent.

Five stars, easy. ... Read more

Product Description
Ever need a fact or quotation on drooling? Designed for speechwriters, journalists, writers, researchers, students, professors, teachers, historians, academics, scrapbookers, trivia buffs and word lovers, this is the largest book ever created for this single word. It represents a compilation from a variety of sources with a linguistic emphasis on anything relating to the term "drooling," including non-conventional usage and alternative meanings which capture ambiguities. The entries cover all parts of speech (noun, verb, adverb or adjective usage) as well as use in modern slang, pop culture, social sciences (linguistics, history, geography, economics, sociology, political science), business, computer science, literature, law, medicine, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and other physical sciences. This "data dump" results in many unexpected examples for drooling, since the editorial decision to include or exclude terms is purely a linguistic process. The resulting entries are used under license or with permission, used under "fair use" conditions, used in agreement with the original authors, or are in the public domain. Proceeds from this book are used to expand the content and coverage of Webster's Online Dictionary (www.websters-online-dictionary.org). ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The book that started it all...
When I was a teenager my family and I were on a summer vacation to Washington D.C. and were visiting a local area book store when I happened upon this book. I'd always liked comic collections (had a pretty good collection of Far Side & Bloom County books at home), so I started flipping through it. Soon I was laughing out loud and reading them to my Mom & Dad, and we bought the book. After that I was hooked, and waited anxiously for each new collection to hit the bookstore.

This first collection is fun because you can definitely see how Calvin & Hobbes are a bit more raw & simply drawn, but the ideas and writing are uniformly excellent. A great start to the greatest comic strip to ever hit the funny papers!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for young boys
... but be prepared to explain some of the big words. And to explain why some things are funny.

I got the first couple Calvin and Hobbes collections for my nephew, as a transition from "I Can Read" books to real books. They worked great.I think that comics are especially good for this, as a lot of the information still comes from the drawings and there aren't huge blocks of text to be intimidated by.The story lines were appealing for a young boy (surprise!), the vocabulary generally wasn't too difficult, but there were still some challenging words that made him work.Even when he didn't really "get" why the comics were funny, he still enjoyed reading them.

And it was a nice trip down memory lane for me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comic Classic!
I have two favorite comics right now: "Garfield" and "Calvin & Hobbes". I go for Garfield for its pure slapstick/ironic humor, and for its visual gags. Meanwhile, I go for Calvin & Hobbes for its wild imagination and diverse philosophies. I admire the six-year old troublemaker and his stuffed tiger as much as the fat orange cat and his nerdy owner (I know, they're completely different comics). Calvin and Hobbes's philosophies and imaginary adventures are what make this comic: most of them are right on the spot and are just downright compelling.

Here in the first book, the drawings are clearly not up to par compared to the later strips, but it's not all that horrible. Here, we're introduced to the kid, his tiger, and his parents. We're also introduced to Susie Derkins, Miss Wormwood, the Principal, Moe, and Rosalyn; they continually play major parts throughout the whole series. Much of the strips here are more for ironic humor and slapstick, and we don't get to see a lot of influential ramblings or any of that sort. We do, however, get to see Calvin as Spaceman Spiff, so space adventures aplenty.

Grade on Book: A-
Grade on Entire Series: A+

5-0 out of 5 stars A work of true genius and a tribute to the imaginative child
It will only take the reading of at most 10 pages before you will reach the conclusion that Bill Watterson is a genius. He captures the lament of all children whose imagination overpowers them, leading them to other places when they "should" be concentrating on more mundane things like schoolwork. Calvin is a young boy who is always in trouble, yet his problems are a consequence of his tenuous grip on reality. If he can maintain his imagination into adulthood, he no doubt will be very successful as a writer, but as a child, there are strong forces that will strongly dampen his wandering mind.
I was such a child, often preferring to play off by myself on the playground and pretend that I was doing greater things than simply kicking a ball or swinging in a swing. My teachers often wondered about my being alone, yet those were my favorite times during the school day. Elementary school teachers have a collective abhorrence for any child that is "different."
Some people enjoy C & H for the amusement, yet some of us recognize something deeper, the imaginative nonconformist who struggles to hold that characteristic into adulthood. For it is not till adulthood that it is appreciated.

5-0 out of 5 stars The beginning of a wonderful adventure...
Forgive me if my review runs a bit on the sappy side, but I grew up with Calvin and Hobbes, and I sometimes think they are among the best friends I've ever had. Bill Watterson's comic is gentle, sincere, and magical. At its core it is an examination of what it means to be human, and the value of friendship. Watterson's philosophy of the comic strip was that it should be based around characters rather than gags; we should feel as though we know the protagonists as real people, rather than as interchangeable vehicles for jokes. That comes through on every page, even from the very beginning. Calvin's world has a cast you can probably count on two hands, but every character (except possibly Moe, the bully) has at least a hint of fully-rounded personality. Watterson's world is one of simple pleasures shared with good company.

As with any comic strip, the first collection is rather crude in pretty much every aspect--the drawings, the humor, the personalities--but as a prototype for what would come later, it is not without its own charms. Even at this stage I would hardly call Calvin and Hobbes a forgettable, generic strip. It still has heart and a sense of profundity, even if Watterson had not yet figured out the most effective way to illustrate these things in his strip. It's interesting to see the origin of Hobbes (even if this version was discarded later), the genesis of Calvin's relationship with Susie (the love-hate romance, which will later be toned down, is at the forefront here), the first appearance of Spaceman Spiff, the introduction of a then-unnamed Rosalyn, and so forth. Also, early Calvin and Hobbes are somehow a bit more adorable here than their later incarnations, but you didn't hear that from me.

In an age of disposable comics, Calvin and Hobbes is one of the few childhood experiences of my life that I can actually appreciate more with age. I would not find it an exaggeration to say that Watterson's perspective of life heavily shaped my own, as I find myself much less concerned with superficiality and the plastic culture of Hollywood than many of my reality-TV-addicted, Nike-sporting, iPod-blasting peers, and more appreciative of the little things in life that we tend to take for granted. All Calvin needs to be content is a good friend and a search for adventure, and even as I grow, kicking and screaming, into adulthood, I find I can still relate. ... Read more

Webster's bibliographic and event-based timelines are comprehensive in scope, covering virtually all topics, geographic locations and people. They do so from a linguistic point of view, and in the case of this book, the focus is on "Drooling," including when used in literature (e.g. all authors that might have Drooling in their name). As such, this book represents the largest compilation of timeline events associated with Drooling when it is used in proper noun form. Webster's timelines cover bibliographic citations, patented inventions, as well as non-conventional and alternative meanings which capture ambiguities in usage. These furthermore cover all parts of speech (possessive, institutional usage, geographic usage) and contexts, including pop culture, the arts, social sciences (linguistics, history, geography, economics, sociology, political science), business, computer science, literature, law, medicine, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and other physical sciences.
