Product Description

This landmark volume is the first to trace the exciting developments in the field of dwarfism research and treatment over the past century -- particularly during the past fifty years. Dr. Betty M. Adelson, a psychologist, has unearthed and synthesized the most significant information about dwarfing conditions, from articles written a century ago to current books and specialized databases.

Highlighting the outstanding contributions of Dr. Victor McKusick and several of his colleagues, Dr. Adelson reveals how dwarfism specialists have helped redefine the nature of medical care -- transforming it from an authoritarian enterprise into a holistic, collaborative venture among physicians, affected individuals, and their families.

The parent of an adult dwarf daughter, Adelson examines the social forces that affect the dwarfism community. She offers personal descriptions of the day-to-day challenges dwarf individuals face and portrays their accomplishments. Insightful and accessible, this work will prove a valuable resource for affected individuals, their families, and medical professionals -- physicians, nurses, genetic counselors, social workers, psychologists, and medical students.

5-0 out of 5 stars Really outstanding book
Are you curious about dwarfism from a medical as well as social stand point? This is a really good book about what people with dwarfism (there are over 200 different forms) face, feel and view themselves.

I have had this book for several years and I really, really enjoy reading it.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Must read" for parents of children with short stature
As the mother of a 4'6" woman with Mucolipidosis III, I could relate to many of the stories I read in this book.Beyond that, I learned a great deal about all of the different causes for dwarfism.Dr. Adelson has presented a comprehensive view of the many challenges faced by dwarfs. She writes with the compassion of one who has the understanding of the complexities of finding the right treatment for each individual.
This is a must read for anyone who is raising a child with short stature. It contains a wealth of valuable information about numerous disorders, and a list of different helpful organizations. The many personal accounts help to make the information very meaningful. This book is a "keeper" to be used for reference in the future.

Product Description
Hauser was a physically stunted adult with the mind of a child, who was abandoned at the city gate of Nuremburg in 1828, after seventeen years of neglect and isolation in a dungeon. The notoriety of his case gave the impetus to many learned arguments regarding the significance of nature versus nurture. Money summarises the various incorrect theories that have been advanced since Hauser's time by paediatricians, psychologists, and psychiatrists. He underscores recent studies showing that deprivation drastically impairs the normal functioning of growth hormones, thus causing physical dwarfism, mental retardation, and defective social development. He shows how children from abusive environments can be effectively treated by a move to a new home and affectionate stimulation of the skin senses. Data collected on over thirty modern cases of the Kaspar Hauser syndrome are presented to support Money's arguments. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars this is nothing you wish to buy
I bought this. It is every CDC publication you could every find online. NOTHING about dwarfism is in it. NOTHING. Nothing about turner syndrome or about anything, are you under 4' 6", it is not here! A to Z CDD! Who can not find subjects from the Center of Disease Control online?

It cost $25 and it was a total waste of my time and my Shipping and Handling.

I am so ticked off I would be mad ONLY if Amazon didn't give me its value back for this lost CD. If I want to see a CDC form for AIDS, MS, and so on then I would just DOWNLOAD it from the CDC!

No one should waste their hard earned money aiming to undersatnd anything to do with dwarfism here.

Everything here can be obtained ONLINE. Just like I have for dwarfism for several years.

Excerpt: Puck is the codename of two fictional characters, a father and daughter pair who are both members of Alpha Flight, in the Marvel Comics universe. Puck (Eugene Milton Judd) is a fictional character, a comic book superhero in the Marvel Universe. Puck first appeared in Alpha Flight vol. 1 #1 and was created by John Byrne. Judd's superhero origin began when he was hired to steal the Black Blade of Baghdad. The Blade was actually a prison for an ancient sorcerer called Black Raazer, and Judd accidentally freed him. Judd was able to trap Raazer once more using some ancient mysticism and the light from his own life force. However, this caused the 7' tall adventurer to shrink to about 3' 6" in height. This was because the Black Blade had the ability to take life force from others, which caused a physical reduction in size. It has also granted him immortality. At some point, he became friends with the American playboy Dan Kane, otherwise known as Captain Terror. When Captain Terror was defeated in the Spanish Civil War by the 1930s El Aguila, a fellow hero fighting on the opposite side, he retired, but Puck fought El Aguila for revenge. He also formed a friendship with noted author Ernest Hemingway and became an accomplished bullfighter. Eventually joining Alpha Flight, he adopted the codename 'Puck.' The first character to use the codename is a man whose real name is Eugene Milton Judd. He was born in 1914 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Excerpt: Dwarfism (pronounced ) is short stature resulting from an abnormal medical condition. It is sometimes defined as an adult height of less than 4 feet 10 inches (147 cm), although this definition is problematic because short stature in itself is not a disorder. Dwarfism can be caused by about 200 distinct medical conditions, such that the symptoms and characteristics of individual dwarfs vary greatly. In the United States, people with dwarfism are often called little people. Disproportionate dwarfism is characterized by one or more body parts' being relatively large or small in comparison to those of a normal adult, with growth abnormalities in specific areas being apparent. In cases of proportionate dwarfism, the body appears normally proportioned, but is abnormally small; the term midget originally described proportionate dwarfs. Hypotonia, or a lack of muscle, is common in dwarfs, but intelligence and lifespan are usually normal. Achondroplasia is a bone-growth disorder responsible for 70% of dwarfism cases. In achondroplasia, the limbs are disproportionally short compared to the trunk (abdominal area), with the head larger than normal and characteristic facial features. Conditions in humans characterized by disproportional body parts are typically caused by one or more...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=138301 ... Read more

Product Description
Webster's bibliographic and event-based timelines are comprehensive in scope, covering virtually all topics, geographic locations and people. They do so from a linguistic point of view, and in the case of this book, the focus is on "Dwarfism," including when used in literature (e.g. all authors that might have Dwarfism in their name). As such, this book represents the largest compilation of timeline events associated with Dwarfism when it is used in proper noun form. Webster's timelines cover bibliographic citations, patented inventions, as well as non-conventional and alternative meanings which capture ambiguities in usage. These furthermore cover all parts of speech (possessive, institutional usage, geographic usage) and contexts, including pop culture, the arts, social sciences (linguistics, history, geography, economics, sociology, political science), business, computer science, literature, law, medicine, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and other physical sciences. This "data dump" results in a comprehensive set of entries for a bibliographic and/or event-based timeline on the proper name Dwarfism, since editorial decisions to include or exclude events is purely a linguistic process. The resulting entries are used under license or with permission, used under "fair use" conditions, used in agreement with the original authors, or are in the public domain. ... Read more
