Product Description
The Dysphagia Cookbook is a specialty cookbook filled with nutritious, great-tasting recipes for those whose eating options are limited by chewing and swallowing difficulties. All of the recipes focus on enhancing flavor, presentation, texture, aroma, and color, for there are many other products that supply nutritious calories or liquids but give little attention to these quality-of-life concerns.

Some of the unique aspects of The Dysphagia Cookbook make it particularly useful and practical. These include:

• A classification of S, G, or P indicates consistency levels of soft, ground, or puréed.

• Flexible instructions provide suggestions for adapting recipes to accommodate increasing levels of chewing and swallowing difficulties.

• There are many recipes with an international flavor that do not use difficult-to-find ingredients.

• Ready-made products that have been tested for thickness, flavor, ease of chewing, and ease of purchase and preparation are listed.

• A section on must-have kitchen supplies helps cooks deal with the new ways of preparing food for people with swallowing difficulties.

• The approach is practical rather than clinical.

The ritual of eating gives shape and meaning to our lives. Many meals are consumed in a pleasant atmosphere with the company of loved ones and friends in lively conversation. The Dysphagia Cookbook is an attempt to restore this joy and dignity to those whose pleasure in this area has been limited to one degree or another. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars He is not alone
My Uncle was just released from a hospital where he experienced a swallowing problem. I ordered this book for my aunt and she has found it extremely helpful and creative. Simple and easy to follow, it has made meals more interesting and tasty for my Uncle. Thank you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome book
This book is awesome, very helpful and comes at a great price! There aren't many good quality books on this topic that include tasty recipes + pertinent info about swallowing difficulties. Highly recommend.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful
My mom has Multiple System Atrophy, which combines the worst of Parkinson's and ALS, among others. Not only can she not swallow well, she really cannot chew at this stage of her illness. This book recognizes both problems, unlike some other similar cookbooks I've tried. And I love the fact that healthy folks can enjoy the recipes as well. All in all, a big help when I was fast running out of tasty ideas.

5-0 out of 5 stars wonderful recipes for als patients and their families!
I really found this cookbook helpful since it was written by people who know first hand what ALS victims are experiencing. I was pleased with the types of food offered in this cookbook, it was nice simple ordinary style of meals just like we have always eaten. This is a helpful cookbook for the families of ALS patients. I highly recommend it.

4-0 out of 5 stars good food, good mood
This book enabled me to keep my sanity and enjoy family mealtime again! My son was recovering from jaw surgery. I was fixing a meal for the family and preparing something separate for my son. He grew weary of the blandness and monotony. I became tired and frustrated. The whole family was cranky. The solution was The Dysphagia Cookbook. The food was easy enough for my son to eat, palatable to the rest of the family, and I had only one meal to prepare! The recipes offer variety and flexibility. I found recipes for mature tastes as well as meals for a child's delight. I was pleasantly surprised to find a few new cocktails as well! Swallowing difficulties or not, anyone could use this cookbook.

This pocket-sized reference is for clinicians who manage patients with dysphagia. Speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists, physicians, clinical dieticians, nurses, and pharmacists will find this book to be a helpful, handy resource. Drugs and Dysphagia is carefully organized, allowing quick access to precise information. The text comprises three parts: Part 1-overviews the nervous system and the swallow process. An overview of the effects of medications on swallowing is provided in Chapter 3. Part 2-addresses medications that affect the central nervous system. Medications associated with oral, pharyngeal, and esophageal dysphagia; causes of dysphagia; and drug-induced dysphagia are discussed. Part 3-deals with important medications that can cause dysfunction of the gastrointestinal system and those that are used to treat gastrointestinal dysfunction. Tables are included throughout for this quick and easy-to-use reference. These tables are organized into medication groups based on their use. Specific medications from each group are listed by both generic and brand name. 5-0 out of 5 stars A clinician's handbook: from novice to tutor
Of the growing number of texts in dysphagia management, this books still holds its own."Manual of dysphagia assessment..." achieves the balance of focus (on specific methods of assessment) and breadth (of clinician level of skill and interest). In the current climate of demand for instrumental assessment, the clinical swallow exam is justly covered in detail, from social and medical history, to areas only recently receiving recognition for their importance, such as oral hygiene.
The clinical swallow exam, videofluoroscopic and laryngoscopic swallow evals are covered thoroughly. Each section can be read/referred to in isolation.Where I think this book is really useful is that the major swallow assessments are together in one compact volume; presented in a manner that makes comparison much easier than in some texts. The manual is written in a format that is equally useful propped up beside me in clinic or as a reference for teaching. There are many citations to research although critical appraisal of these works is left to the reader.
The structured assessment presentation is great for both the novice and experienced practitioner.Although there is a wealth of information, this is far from a dry text; it is written by a practicing speech-language pathologist with obvious experience. You can see he actually knows what a patient looks like.Mr Murray details those points we all like to think we remember in our daily work and a few we might never have thought of.I avidly read this book as a novice and I'm still referring to it some years later as a tutor! ... Product Description
This is the first book to concentrate on dysphagia in rare conditions - those that occur infrequently or those that may occur more frequently but are only sometimes associated with dysphagia. Covering a wide range of conditions - from progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), through connective tissue disease, to conditions as diverse as West Nile virus - the editors and expert contributors efficiently synthesize the available information to provide the essentials needed to help clinicians to perform sophisticated assessments, based on their knowledge of both the conditions and the expected swallowing signs and treatments. Each entry covers the neurology of the given condition, including the signs and symptoms, neuropathology, epidemiology and genetics. Thereafter, coverage of swallowing in each condition examines the diagnostic signs and symptoms, etiology, swallowing neuropathology, associated cognitive, linguistic, and communicative signs and symptoms, special diagnostic considerations, treatment, nutrition, hydration, and medications. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars If you are buying for the DVD's...DON'T
I chose this book because it came with DVD's that were supposed to provide practice viewing and interpreting swallow studies. The DVDs that came with the book were defective. One of the folders was empty and another was missing altogether from the DVD. I was provided with a second set of DVD's from Amazon. These were defective as well. I am currently waiting on a set of DVDs from Plural Publishing. In the meantime, the binding on the book broke down. Although the book contains some valuable information, it is not worth the money I spent and the hassles I've experienced. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars good enough?
I bought this textbook to trial with my SLT undergrad and postgrad students in Dysphagia. There appears to be a balance of adult and paediatric coverage, but actually the adult content is much more comprehensive and relevant than the paediatrics. Arvedson and Brodsky 2002 and Wolf and Glass 1992 are still useful paediatric textbooks despite their age and huge advances in some of the areas they cover.

5-0 out of 5 stars great delivery
It was a quick delivery, and all transactions went smoothly.I would definitely purchase from this again!!
