Product Description
"Every day, meal by meal, millions of people suffer from eating disorders. I am one of them."

Nadia Shivack was fourteen years old when she met Ed, her eating disorder. Sometimes like an alien in her body, sometimes like a lover, Ed was unpredictable and exciting, but ultimately always dangerous and destructive.

At an inpatient unit unit of a hospital where she was taken for treatment, Nadia wrote and drew on napkins after meals in order to keep the food in and calm the outrageous voices in her head. These pictures, together with others drawn on notebook paper and a variety of other surfaces, tell an unflinchingly honest story of a woman's lifelong battle with anorexia and bulimia. Raw, brave, and brilliant, Nadia's journey takes readers to the intimate corners of these misunderstood diseases. You will never think about eating disorders in the same way again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book, just understand what you are buying.
As someone who owns over a hundred books on eating disorders, I found this particular book to be a great asset to my ever expanding collection.I found this author's honesty and artistic expression very engaging and enlighting as well as truly moving. This book is not a novel in the "expected" sense. It is a story and an creative expression of a brave woman who captures the decent and hell of a destructive and deadly eating disorder.I for one like the fact that this book is so different and individualistic.

1-0 out of 5 stars More appropriate as a brochure
This book was not clearly described and more aimed at a middle school health class. It i something I would expect to see at a school nurse's office.

1-0 out of 5 stars Yuck! Not even really a book.Waste of my money.
Just not happy.Thought it was a REAL book. Not so much.Pictures drawn with a couple of words.

5-0 out of 5 stars Make sure this book is in your library - it can make a difference!
As a former anorexic/bulimic, I have read a plethora of self-help books on the subject, but none that saw eating disorders from the inside out as this book does.Ironically, it wasn't until I heard back from a young library patron about how this book had comforted her that I realized that it truly is a self-help book and not just a very painful autobiography. The author puts us through at least 60 pages of living hell, and truly, she doesn't overcome her disorder as much as she learns to detatch and distance herself from it - at age 40.What is most refreshing (if anything in this book could be called that) is the humor and the mode of presentation: somewhat like "Amelia gone to Eating Disorder Hell" journals. Her talented and obsessive writing is at times concrete poetry and at other times reminiscent of Dante's Inferno, illuminating the dark corners of this obsession. There are few, if any, books that adequately portray the angst and manage to comfort sufferers: make sure this book is in your library! Includes afterword, helpful websites, acknowledgements, and a list of eating disorder factoids.

5-0 out of 5 stars Courtesy of Teens Read Too
In Nadia Shivack's heartbreaking true story, she tells the world about her life-long problem with eating disorders. Told with a mixture of text and pictures drawn by Ms. Shivack, her preoccupation with food began when her mother told her that not only did she not dress like a girl, but that she was also getting chunky. Her parents had their own problems - her father was overly critical and her mother, a Holocaust survivor, refused to let her three children leave the table until they had cleaned their plates, even though she herself only ate one small meal a day to survive.

When Nadia began swimming competitively in school, her swim coach would praise the girls who were slender and berate those who, in his opinion, needed to lose weight. She began to feel huge and unattractive, and started the cycle of abuse with restricting her diet and then binging on foods that were not allowed. It wasn't long before she met "Ed," her eating disorder - the evil alien being who took over her life.

Nadia's trouble with food was not restricted to her youth. Through high school, through college, through study programs and medication, she struggled with it her entire life. Even knowing the side effects - being unable to sleep, rotting gums from purging, being incapable of having effective relationships - it wasn't until Nadia was about to turn forty that she decided to try another treatment program.

Thankfully, Ms. Shivack did eventually overcome the horror of her eating disorder. Like many other diseases, however, she knows that this will be a lifelong struggle, something that she will always have to work at. By telling her story inside the pages of INSIDE OUT, she hopes that other people struggling with an eating disorder will realize just how serious it is, and that reaching out for help isn't a sign of weakness, but of strength.

Although I've never had an eating disorder, I truly felt empowered by reading INSIDE OUT. Nadia's story could be that of any number of young people in the world today, and I hope that they all are able to come to the same realization that she was - that letting food rule your life is never a good thing.

5-0 out of 5 stars A top pick for those fighting this disease or know someone who is
Food is not something to be feared. "Beating Ana: How to Outsmart Your Eating Disorder & Take Your Life Back" is a guide to battling what many women and some men face every day due to societal pressures - a crippling fear of food and getting fat due to the eating disorder known as Anorexia Nervosa. Shannon Cutts draws upon her own experience and hopes to inspire other readers to rise up and above and to not fear food. "Beating Ana" is a top pick for those fighting this disease or know someone who is.

5-0 out of 5 stars You are not alone!
This looks like a simple book but the elements contained within the pages of "Beating Ana" are a support system to aid anyone with an eating disorder to break through to into health. The author says something so profound right on the first page of part one:"Quite possibly, the only experience tougher on a human body, mind, heart, and spirit than falling ill is getting better. It gets unnecessarily tougher, however, when we assume that we will have to heal the same way we got sick--alone. We don't." In this book you will find a companion to healing.

Chapters begin with a letter to the author, Shannon Cutts, and her response. You know she understands because she's been there and healed. Next is a short piece on one of the elements for healing and the "recovery workshop" which is something the reader can really do to grow and process new feelings and thoughts. The workshop can be anything from watching a movie to making a list. Each chapter closes with a "Life Celebration Affirmation."

The author writes with the voice of a very understanding mentor, someone who gets what's going on but who also sees through all the tricks that an eating disorder can bring up so you can get through even the hardest of times. There is a wonderful focus on empowering the reader (or participant!) to experience the beauty within.

The book wraps up with guidelines for forming and being involved in a mentoring relationship. "Beating Ana" would be a great companion in a healing process. It is not about the dark side, it's about getting through the haunting darkness of eating disorders into freedom. I work with young women and this book will remain on my shelf as a wonderful resource.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mentoring is an ancient and honorable tradition
Mentoring is an ancient and honorable tradition. It brings to mind the relationship with older siblings, trusted community elders, apprentices and master craftspeople, and even traditional spiritual advisors. In Beating Ana, Cutts brings experience and compassion to the 'craft' of mentoring and brings it into a field - eating disorders recovery - rich in opportunities to nurture and support each other.

Eating disorders at times leave practitioners feeling as emotionally challenged and out of control as the patients they treat. This is the first book of its kind to provide support, direction, clarity, and optimism to clinicians treating these disorders. In describing what to do and how to do what works, reader-friendly strategies and holistic guidelines bring together science and human personality, protocols and art, skill and instinct, evidence-based research and practicable clinical applications to provide a fully integrative approach to eating disorders care.

In Doing What Works, Ms. Natenshon fills the gaps that currently exist in professional education and practice and in the general understanding of what sets eating disorder diagnosis and treatment apart from other disorders. The author, a psychotherapist with 40 years of experience treating eating disorders in patients of all ages with a specialty in working with children and families, speaks to health professionals and parents as pivotal advocates for the child in treatment and recovery.

5-0 out of 5 stars Doing What Works Really Works
As a nutritionist working in the field of eating disorders, I applaud this greatly needed resource.Eating disorders is a separate and challenging specialty in the field of nutrition.Often puzzling, frustrating and ultimately so very rewarding, this is a field that hasn't been thoroughly explored in such a manner...until now.
The eating disorder nutritionist is more than an educator of scientific and nutritional facts. The emotional component of these complicated disorders requires a thorough understanding of the underlying issues as well as an ability to handle them as they impact the individual's recovery process. As a significant member of the eating disorder team, the nutritionist collaborates with other team members, facilitating the exchange of information to provide the most comprehensive standard of care.
Treating eating disorders requires unique education, training and interpersonal skills which are often not adequately taught in college or graduate school. Therefore, the nutritionist is often left to search for manuals, methods, and mentors to hopefully fill the gaps in education. The search is over. This book has it all and more. Doing What Works is filled with critical information presented in a clear, empathetic manner while also covering all aspects of the integrative system for the treatment of eating disorders. It's a must read for any nutritionist working in the field of eating disorders because it finally is what really works.
Highly, Highly Recommended

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource for the Treatment of Eating Disorders
Abigail Natenshon's Doing What Works: An Integrative System for the Treatment of Eating Disorders from Diagnosis to Recovery is an excellent, comprehensive guide for eating disorder treatment.

Abigail Natenshon, MA, LCSW is a psychotherapist who has over forty years experience specializing in the treatment of eating disorders with individuals and their families.Ms. Natenshon has been featured on television and other print media. She is also the author of When Your Child Has An Eating Disorder: A Step-by-Step Workbook for Parents and Other Caregivers (Jossey Bass, 1999).

For professionals, treating an individual with an eating disorder can be meaningful, but it also can be challenging. Ms. Natenshon's new book, as the title states, takes the therapist through the steps of diagnosis and treatment all the way to solutions for recovery. This book bridges evidence-based approaches and research with practical clinical approaches. It begins with current treatments in the field and emphasizes a substantial roadblock to many: the misunderstood role of food in the treatment process.Ms. Natenshon writes, "eating and weight issues can sometimes distract and deter practioners from the need for constant vigilance of the deeper issues and co morbidity that underlie and drive these disorders."

Abigail's sense of energy and delight from years of working within the eating disorder community shows on every page. She provides a compelling explanation of how the therapist's sense of self is integrated into his or her treatment and gives useful strategies for the therapist to be self-aware and begin with where the client is.The power of the therapeutic relationship is apparent throughout her book. She interjects many useful tips and recommendations for all therapists who treat individuals with eating disorders. Applying Prochaska and DeClemente's stages of change model to eating disorders, Ms. Natenshon explains that many clients come to treatment in the pre-contemplation stage."Never fight with an eating disorder, as there will be no way to win," she says confidently, and instead urges the use of the change model to facilitate different approaches depending on where the client is in the process of change.Resistance is seen as a normal process instead of willful opposition. This book also details different treatment approaches and methods with specific case examples, and shows how different methods can be uniquely tailored to the client to achieve healthy recovery.

Ms. Natenshon ends the book on the recovery process and its uniqueness. She emphasizes that recovery is not a number on the scale but an overall sense of well-being and capacity to eat healthfully and without fears or obsessional thinking about food.Recovery is defined as self- acceptance, sound judgment and appropriate response to feelings and needs.

For all members of the multi-discipline clinical team who work with clients struggling with an eating disorder, this integrative approach is a must read. This book provides an integrative, comprehensive, and practical tool for clinicians who are just beginning to see clients with eating disorders or for the experienced clinician to refer back to year after year. Parents who already have a thorough understanding of eating disorders may also find this book an important reference as it explains many models of treatment along a continuum.

I am just getting into the field of eating disorders and this book has been a perfect introduction for me. It has also gone further, going into great deal about the various treatment options that have proven effective with this population. Product Description
A unique new approach to treating eating disorders

Eight million women in the United States suffer from anorexia nervosa and/or bulimia. For these women, the road to recovery is a rocky one. Many succumb to their eating disorders. Life Without Ed offers hope to all those who suffer from these often deadly disorders. For years, author Jennifer Schaefer lived with both anorexia and bulimia. She credits her successful recovery to the technique she learned from her psychologist, Thom Rutledge.

This groundbreaking book illustrates Rutledge's technique. As in the author's case, readers are encouraged to think of an eating disorder as if it were a distinct being with a personality of its own. Further, they are encouraged to treat the disorder as a relationship rather than as a condition. Schaefer named her eating disorder Ed; her recovery involved "breaking up" with Ed

  • Shares the points of view of both patient and therapist in this approach to treatment
  • Helps people see the disease as a relationship from which they can distance themselves
  • Techniques to defeat negative thoughts that plague eating disorder patients

Prescriptive, supportive, and inspirational, Life Without Ed shows readers how they too can overcome their eating disorders. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Adverse Effects...
This book only made me think more about what to eat what not to eat and how to deal with the "issues" in my head. I was on the road to a great recovery and was feeling much better when I started reading this book and it just took me back into the world that I lived in before adding a whole new spectrum of thoughts that I had never had before that. I HATED the things that this book made me think about and I started comparing myself to the girl in the book and how I need to be a better anorexic than her. I know that some people love this book and it helped them a lot , but it had the reverse effect on me, so if you are a parent... I wouldn't recommend that you get this book for your child. Do you REALLY want to take the risk of it having an adverse effect on your child? They are already struggling enough and this book might add to that. I personally do not recommend this book to anyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars book
If you have a eating disorder or know someone who does this book is awesome. It's a must read!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars good book, plenty of good info
A great good that gives a good understand about how people can easily get into eating disorders. My wife has been dealing with this issue for several years now. I haven't finished the book, but I will write another review when I finish so I can let you all know my insights to this matter.

3-0 out of 5 stars Helpful for friends and family, not those suffering
Life Without Ed is a wonderful book if you are trying explain to a loved one what having an eating disorder is like. As a recovering anorexic and bulimic, I would recommend this only to loved ones, not to women suffering from a disorder. While the book gives glimmers of hope, it is also very triggering. There were often parts in the book where Jennie would describe an eating disordered behavior that I had not tried before. If you are looking for a recovery book, this is not for you. I would recommend "Eating in the Light of the Moon" or "Goodbye Ed, Hello Me".

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book for all Eating Disorder Sufferers
Jenni writes with candid insight into the experience of living with and recovering from an eating disorder.A must read for all who seek to recover from eating disorders!Exceptionally inspirational!

Product Description

The true story of the 1986 U.S. National Gymnastics champion whose lifelong dream was to compete in the Olympics, until anorexia, injuries, and coaching abuses nearly destroyed her

Fanciful dreams of gold medals and Nadia Comaneci led Jennifer Sey to become a gymnast at the age of six. She was a natural at the sport, and her early success propelled her family to sacrifice everything to help her become, by age eleven, one of America’s elite, competing at prestigious events worldwide alongside such future gymnastics’ luminaries as Mary Lou Retton.

But as she set her sights higher and higher—the senior national team, the World Championships, the 1988 Olympics—Sey began to change, putting her needs, her health, and her well-being aside in the name of winning. And the adults in her life refused to notice her downward spiral.

In Chalked Up Sey reveals the tarnish behind her gold medals. A powerful portrait of intensity and drive, eating disorders and stage parents, abusive coaches and manipulative businessmen, denial and the seduction of success, it is the story of a young girl whose dreams would become eclipsed by the adults around her. As she recounts her experiences, Sey sheds light on the destructiveness of our winning-is-everything culture where underage and underweight girls are celebrated and on the need for balance in children’s lives.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste a penny on this drivel
This is a story of a spoiled brat who got everything she wanted, yet she wanted to blame everyone around her for her problems. This may be her story, but it is laced with perceptions and feelings that did not necessarily happen. She was obsessed with her weight when she was around 7 years old.Everything that she blames those around her in her life for doing, she did to herself.

She was never a very good gymnast and was lucky that the Nationals in 1986 was underattended. Also, she was lucky that many of the 1988 Olympians were juniors at the time she won this Nationals.

If you want to read about her taking laxatives and her messing her pants, this book is for you.But she should not be rewarded by someone paying for this ridiculous diatribe.

2-0 out of 5 stars I'm still reading... Two years later, lol!
I don't think this is the worst book ever, but the fact that I've not finished it in almost TWO years says a lot about the book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Passion, Skill, Brains and Balls
Thank you Jennifer Sey for finally saying what all of us knew but wouldn't say. The book doesn't lie. I was an Elite gymnast in the 80's and I know this book is true. I lived with my coach away from home and trained with some of the top Elites and Olympians in the country. I experienced the abuse (the word I would use for it) depicted in the book on a regular basis and witnessed many other girls experiencing the same. I did know that coaches threw things - mine did. I did know that coaches were verbally and physically abusive - mine was. I did know that some men who had never participated in the sport took up coaching to prey on young girls, trying to gain a sense of purpose and power - mine did. I did know that girls were told to lose weight by any means possible - and did. I also knew that nobody in my circle was aware enough, brave enough or cared enough to say it needed to stop. If the system was questioned, it was done in whispers, so as not to upset any possibility of reaching the ultimate goal...winning.

When I read the book description, I thought it might be an interesting read. What it ended up being was a no-holds-barred, cathartic journey, providing me with insight that no therapist could ever match. Sey's unabashedly raw and honest writing ripped open old wounds and gave a picture of what it looks like to heal. It takes truth to heal. Because she allows herself to be vulnerable yet still maintain the strength to write the actuality of what happened, we get a complete picture of her journey. I started crying in empathy when I read about the pain and anguish, and I ended weeping with the beauty of it all: the beauty of her life, her husband, her two boys, her career, her mended relationship with her parents. Those things only came about through the process of truth.

I was ready for this book. I am forty-four years old. While reading Chalked Up, I reached back into the depths of what drove me as a child and compared that to what drives me now as a woman, thirty years later. I am glad Jennifer Sey was that great a gymnast and did work that insanely hard because it gives her the extra clout needed to tell this story. Clearly, it takes the kind of passion, skill, brains and balls that got her ahead in gymnastics to write books like this one. Please keep them coming. I will be looking for them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome book!
This was a fantastic book, very well written and very honest. Loved every bit of it, could not put it down.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sad, but true.
Loved it. Sadly, it speaks true of the sport even today...not all coaches treat their gymnasts this way, of course. Coaches want it even more than the girls do sometimes...the better their gymnasts are=more $$$$$$ for them and their programs. It was very sad to read about all of Jennifers injuries, most of which could have been prevented if given proper time to heal from her previous ones...being forced into competition while severely injured ruined her Olympic dream. ... Product Description
Some 95% of eating disorder sufferers are girls between the ages of 12 and 25. The teen and college years are a crucial time for girls, when positive or negative views about their bodies often become manifest.

Written to eating disorder sufferers who are at this critical age, this book provides hope that, through faith and trust in God, they too can rise above the living death of eating disorders and arise as God’s daughters, full of life and with a promising future.

The author tells her personal story of struggling with and defeating her eating disorder. She shares about her overweight childhood, her family-directed diets, the thrilling sense of control she got when she lost weight, and her spiral into anorexia and bulimia. When she left home to go to college, she looked forward to being on her own but fell into even more destructive eating behaviors. After she was confronted by her loved ones and hospitalized, she began the recovery process that led to the day when she could at last eat a normal meal and feel that it was okay. She highlights her relationship with God and the security that eating disorder sufferers can find in God as their loving Father, the one who created them and loves them as they are.

Each chapter includes a prayer for the sufferer, asking God’s help. This book will help sufferers feel less alone, see the extreme results of uninterrupted eating disorders, understand and correct their wrong thinking, and learn to connect with and trust God while they are moving toward recovery. ... I got this book a long time ago from a really nice lady who thought it could help me threw....problems.. I could never get into it. To this day i have it with my bible and still cant seem to find any interest in it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring.
For anyone struggling with an eating disorder, or struggling to recover, I highly recommend this book. The author clearly illistrates her shared struggle, but in no way glorifies her struggle. There is a journaling component to the book, which is very useful for recovery and understanding one's eating disorder. This book is extremely encouraging.

This is a very good book on ana...easy to read and understand..the problem is discussed thoroughly and the character was interesting. She used her roots in Christianity to help with her problem..although she did not rely solely on it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gives you hope
This book alone will not solve your binge eating problem, so don't expect that. But it is a must-read for any person who feels uncontrollable when it comes to food.It definitely makes you wake up to realize what might be behind your binge-eating, as in the emotions behind it.It is an easy-read and you will do a lot of self-assessment.He truly gives you hope that you can get through this so you can focus on losing all the weight you want to.The key part is that he recognizes that normal diets don't work if you are a binge eater because they do not address bingeing.A+!

5-0 out of 5 stars The one book that helped me.
I have read several books on the subject, searching for a way to break free of this. The problem is that many books adopt one of two approaches: either one designed for bulimics, which I am not, or a view that food is an addiction and certain foods must be avoided for life.
This book takes a sensible and, most importantly, very doable approach - it doesn't ask you to monitor in written form, which can be quite a chore, but rather works on making you aware of your eating style and then overhauling it. Gradually, eating is normalized and the former binge foods are introduced - without leading to binges for me!! - so that your relationship with food slowly gravitates towards being "normal".
All in all, a great read, the one book that changed my life!

3-0 out of 5 stars Good but hard to follow
This book was interesting and I was very enlightened. I realized that I do have a binge eating disorder and all of the advice in the book was great. However, I found that it was hard to follow and to keep on top of. Very easy to revert back to prior binge eating ways. There is still hope:

Product Description
"This is a book that could save your child's life." (Craig Johnson, Ph.D., Director of the Eating Disorders Program at Laureate Psychiatric Hospital)

At a time when 81 percent of ten-year-old girls say they are afraid of being fat, early dieting is clearly a widespread problem. However, the difference between being "just a little too thin" and having a full-blown eating disorder can be hard for even the most involved parent to distinguish.

Dr. Michael Strober and Meg Schneider's Just a Little Too Thin shows parents how to approach this problem proactively. First, it helps parents determine the severity of a child's weight issues by outlining the three stages of this slippery slope and the behavioral signs associated with each. The book then gives expert guidance on talking about weight and eating in ways that help a daughter cope with the emotional issues that feed her obsession. No matter where a girl rests on the continuum of eating behaviors, Just a Little Too Thin is an invaluable aid for parents intent on keeping their children emotionally and physically healthy in a world of unprecedented pressures. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Offering compassionate, no-nonsense advice on how to talk to one's children about weight issues
Eating disorder authority Michael Strober, Ph.D. and therapist Meg Schneider MA, LMSW combine their expertise in Just A Little Too Thin: How To Pull Your Child Back From The Brink Of An Eating Disorder, a straightforward guide to recognizing the dangerous signs of when one's daughter (or more rarely, one's son) shifts from becoming an "innocent" to "exhilarated" to "preoccupied dieter" - when dieting has less to do with weight and health and more to do with emotional issues that could prove fatal. Offering compassionate, no-nonsense advice on how to talk to one's children about weight issues, and guide him or her away from the slippery slope that can lead to anorexia, bulimia, or other eating disorders, Just A Little Too Thin is a valuable, jargon-free guide. Additional chapters also offer insight concerning when professional help or medical intervention are necessary, and if so, how to go about it. Highly recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars "Understand your history... the inherent emotional experiences related to your body image."
Eating disorders are ever more prevalent in an image-obsessed society, the phenomenon affecting young girls at an alarming rate. Faced with this concern, parents are often understandably overwhelmed, at a loss for information. This book is designed to help parents define their daughter's behavior, whether there are signs of a passing phase or more serious symptoms, making specific suggestions to interpret eating behavior. The focus of this volume is pre-disorder, appropriate information for parents before their daughter has slipped into pathology, offering insights for using this information proactively, concentrating on a developing girl before she falls victim to peer pressure and media saturation. The authors outline three stages of eating behavior: the innocent (but rigid) dieter, the exhilarated dieter and the distressed and preoccupied dieter. The evolution of these stages is subtle, the obsessive dieter ever more skilled in exercising aberrantbehavior, offeringlogical excuses for a temporary problem that may, in fact, be accelerating, a condition that "weakens her emotionally, cognitively and physically."

Puberty is a critical factor in the onset of eating disorder or preoccupation with weight, the body's natural changes occurring with social expectations and hormonal acceleration, all of which may distort a girl's perception of her body, her food obsession and lack of nutrition gaining in significance. Other triggers include: intense participation in athletics, genetic predisposition to weight gain and the messages of family, society and peer pressure. Certainly the media sends a strong and consistent drumbeat of impossible perfection, television, the movies and the music industry major contributing factors. Add in an adolescent's need for control and the potential for an eating disorder deserves serious attention. One chapter offers detailed suggestions for counteracting the pervasiveness of a thin-oriented culture, changing the dialog before the damage is done, speaking positively about physical image, avoiding injurious remarks about overweight people, developing inner resources and natural talents and articulating feelings. Specific case studies offer insights into pre-adolescent thinking, some misperceptions that can be corrected as a girl views her identity and body in relation to the world at large.

Anorexia nervosa and bulimia are disorders that require immediate intervention, a clearly defined diagnosis of specific behaviors and a fear of fat that is not relieved by weight loss. In contrast, Just a Little Too Thin addresses the diet obsession, adolescents and pre-adolescents tailoring their eating habits to control weight gain, a still viable situation where parents can effectively work with their daughters to prevent more serious issues. The most effective treatment is preventive, focusing on teaching girls how to develop healthy self-perception, a valuable asset aimed at dealing with body image before it becomes a problem. Product Description
A must for parents, teachers and counselors, this book targets preadolescent girls aiming to engage them in educational activites that will empower them to avoid eating disorders. The author examines eating disorders from sociocultural and feminist perspectives - showing how disorders are most often caused by overexposure to media messages, an unrealistic cultural fascination with thinness, by continuous anaylsis of our bodies and a disordered cultural view of food. Then Menassa presents a 10-session guide to prevention that engages girls in activities to spur and empower their independent thinking and reasoning. For example, girls become watchdogs of the media and write to companies that present women in a negative light in their advertisements. The girls challenge ingrained beliefs and replace them with healthier ones. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Newbie needing info
Having worked through some issues in therapy, only to hear that I have some slight Obsessive-Compulsive personality disorder traits, I set out to find a good book to teach me about what I've grown up thinking was "normal."This book gave GREAT insights into my brain and how I work.It has some great tips/tricks on how to break those vicious cycles that we all get into when trying to break a habit or addiction.

I've managed to either underline something on every page or put post-it reminders on various pages to remember to do something. If you're struggling with "why can't I just find 'that thing' that makes me finally get with the program!?", I'd recommend finding an online survey to see if you have a little OCPD...and then get this book.

We all know that there's no magic diet pill or magic potion that will instantly dissolve those unwanted pounds....so do something to change your 'mind' instead of buying that next supplement in hopes that it will finally do the trick.

Still unsure?Do what I did:Read the first couple of pages of this book and if that doesn't convince you - move on.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a must read for anyone with an eating disorder
This book if full of concrete information anyone with an eating disorder needs to know. The exercises give you insight into the way you relate to food and your body. Anyone who eats will relate to this book and anyone who is obsessed by food in any way will be greatly helped by it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great guide for the moderate stress eater
I found this book a tremendous resource, and still do. It's written from a technical perspective, quoting studies and providing case studies on disordered eating. Its message is that if you understand why you binge (ie, lose control) you can stop it. It's all related to stress eating, but for me, the message was that I absolutely had to have a beginning and an end to my meals...I'm a grazer. It made all the difference. I lost 40 lbs and I'm now "normal" weight.

4-0 out of 5 stars A very helpful perspective
I thought this book was very helpful with its ABC approach at helping to stop the behavior that leads to the binge. Its model of a chain helps one figure out the path that lead to the binge right from the begining of the day and learn how to prevent it.I would suggest this book to anyone that is looking for a little bit different approach on overcoming binge eating.

2-0 out of 5 stars Lots of info but no practical help
This is the second self help book I have invested in.The book tends to go a bit over the top on statistics but does manage to give advice and information on bulimia, anorexia and BED all at the same time. The author is obviously well read in such matters and the book is full of useful information.Useful if you don't already know why you or a relative have disordered eating. Sadly as with the last book I knew all the information already, the book added nothing and certainly hasn't guided me in overcoming my eating disorder. The author does acknowledge that sometimes a person will need some kind of one to one therapy to overcome the problem.Perhaps those with minor disorders will find a solution here and I'm sure it will help others understand why someone has an eating disorder and how they can help. Unfortunately the book has convinced me that self help books like this are not the answer and that professional help is required.Coping with an eating disorder, let alone trying to overcome it is difficult enough on your own, I don't recommend this book as the answer it professes, a little help maybe but thats about it. ... The eating disorders - anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and obesity - affect many thousands of people each year, particularly young women. Eating disorders are a subject which parents today cannot study enough; it is believed that over 1 million people in the UK alone have a significant problem with an eating disorder and that up to 90,000 of those are receiving treatment.

Eating Disorders: The Facts is a guide to the three major eating disorders: anorexia, bulimia, and obesity. This comprehensive guide considers why eating disorders occur, and then looks at each in turn, describing the eating behaviours, diagnosis, and treatments available. The opening chapters tackle adolescent eating behaviours and the sexual maturation process, and further chapters look at the problems that the family or friends of someone with an eating disorder may face, providing advice on how they can cope and provide support and help for the sufferer. This sixth edition contains numerous case history outlines, which provide surprising insights into the mind of the eating disorder sufferer, making it easier for patients and their families to read and dip into as needed. 2-0 out of 5 stars This isn't the best book on eating disorders.
This was one of the most frustrating books to read on the subject of eating disorders because the emphasis seemed to be on the wrong things. When we think of eating disorders we must realize how much we still need tolearn. There were so many references to "ideal" weights anddieting that it would be counterproductive for a patient with an eatingdisorder to read this book. Some interesting facts about eating disordersand pregnancy were mentioned in this book, and these seemed to be more inthe authors' area of expertise. There are many other books written ontreating eating disorders and the key seems to be treating the patient withcompassion. There was confusion in the book in defining the differenteating disorders because there aren't any international standards. In theU.S. we typicallyuse the DSM-IV for diagnosis guidelines, but theguidelines used in other countries are somewhat different making this moredifficult to understand.

As a school counselor, I think that every elementary, middle, and high school counselor should have a copy of Conquering Eating Disorders on their shelves, and even one to give away. This non-threatening, easy to read, and very informative book caputres the essence of this illness.I love the realistic examples, written in story format; the amazing information about eating disorders weaved creatively in the processing; and the "what to do" for parents and then their teens after each chapter.I am so impressed with this book!I have read several on eating disorders, but none have truly captured my attention and promotion as this one.The chapters are short and easy to read in one sitting, and ideal for even teens and their parents to read it together.

This book promotes the positive role that school counselors play in a child's life, and I believe that after reading it, you will become more aware and a better advocate for those struggling with eating issues.Five stars, definitely!!!!!

Ours is a society in which thinness, particularly in women, is idealized, even at the cost of health.Adolescent girls and young women are especially at risk of developing eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating disorder. The need for wide-spread prevention among at-risk populations is paramount, as these disorders are often difficult to treat and can contribute to a range of physical and mental health problems.Studies have found that a cognitive dissonance-based intervention significantly outperforms other intervention programs and is successful in preventing onset of eating disorders.

This facilitator guide outlines a two part group intervention program for adolescent and college-aged girls at risk of developing eating disorders. In the first part of the program, participants critique the thin-ideal through discussion, role-playing, and written exercises.Participants learn skills that increase body satisfaction, decrease unhealthy weight control behaviors, and prevent eating disorder symptoms. The second part of the intervention is designed to help participants make gradual and permanent lifestyle changes to achieve a healthy body weight. It teaches how to eat for energy balance, make healthy food choices, and incorporate physical exercise into a daily routine.

This group therapy program is based on 16 years of research and has been completed by over 1000 adolescent girls and young women. It can be effectively delivered by real world providers, such as school counselors, nurses, and teachers. This facilitator guide provides all the information needed to successfully implement the program, including explanation of Cognitive Dissonance theory, session outlines complete with exercises, and recommendations on how to train group leaders and recruit participants. ...
