Product Description
Emetophobia, the extreme fear of vomiting, can affect just about every aspect of sufferer's life, from everyday considerations ('what food will be "safe" for me to eat?') to matters that involve making huge, potentially devastating decisions ('I can't have this baby, I can't face morning sickness'). Nicolette Heaton-Harris has first-hand experience of the phobia and its effects. She suggests strategies for coping with the high levels of anxiety that are intrinsic to the phobia, as well as pre-empting and avoiding anxiety attacks. The experiences of fellow sufferers of all ages, male and female, are shared throughout the book and a list of useful organisations providing further information and support services is also included. "Living with Emetophobia" is a must-have for anyone suffering from emetophobia, anyone living with an emetophobic as well as professionals treating or supporting people with emetophobia. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Little Help
This book does eduacate others about emetophobia. However, it does not address the real issues of those who just fear voimiting, and is mostly about the authors personal experiences. I found it really useless. The only real suggestion for help was to give the reader web sites and self help groups to go to. The reader will not only not get the proper information, but will be directed to certain forms of this fear that they do not have. I was going to send this book back, but have not had time to do so.Worthless.

5-0 out of 5 stars Covers the Basic Facts, But Doesn't Offer Much In the Way of Advice or Support
I was shocked to find that there was actually going to be a book published about emetophobia, and ordered it a month before it was released.I was hoping for a little more advice, coping mechanisms, maybe just some reassurances that it's O.K. to be afraid, and that it's O.K. to medicate something that can't just be counseled away.I was hoping for a bit more in the experiences department as well. After years of not even knowing there was a name for the fear, and only having a few select message boards to communicate with other emets on, I thought maybe this would be a breakthrough.

It is a good read, just because it's the only one dedicated only to emetophobia specifically, but it could have been done better.I would recommend that any emet buy a few copies, this is a must for any close friend or relative.I bought a few of them, I gave one to a friend that came to me after discovering I had to phobia to confide in me that he had the same fear, and I gave the other copies to my husband and my mother. It's been more helpful for the outsiders than for me, which is still a huge step in the right direction. For so long, when approaching a doctor or even a psychiatrist with this issue, we've all heard the famous line, "but nobody likes to puke".And it wasn't until I responded to my psychiatrist that he may be right about that, except he might have missed that one episode of Jerry Springer, but is everyone so afraid of it that when exposed to the situation they actually bring a loaded gun to their head?I then handed him a copy of the book.I'm not sure if it was my comment or the book that helped him comprehend that this was indeed a fear that had taken over my life, but either way, I'm thankful the book exists.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not one helpful suggestion.
Don't buy this book, it is basically a long definition of what emetophobia is.Doesn't even have one suggestion on how to fix it.

1-0 out of 5 stars No help here!
I anxiously awaited the arrival of this book thinking it would help me cope with emetophobia, since part of the title is "coping with Extreme fear of Vomiting".Unfortunately, all this book is about is the author's and a few other's personal experiences with the phobia. If what you need is to know that there are others out there suffering with the same phobia, it's great, it describes every irrational thought I've ever had about vomiting and the problems that it causes in every day life.If what you need is a book to help people in your life understand what you go through, it's also good because it really describes every aspect of the phobia. If what you're looking for is a book that will help you deal with it, look elsewhere!

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
I was hoping this book would offer some ideas or inspirations on how to cope with emetophobia or at the very least how the author managed to overcome this debilitating phobia.Instead, it merely describes what us emetophobes already suffer on a daily basis. ... Read more

Product Description
This digital document is a journal article from Journal of Anxiety Disorders, published by Elsevier in 2007. The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Media Library immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.

Description:
Fear of vomiting (emetophobia) is a poorly understood anxiety disorder, with little research published into its conceptualization or treatment. The current article uses established cognitive and behavioral models of other anxiety disorders as a basis from which to propose a detailed model of emetophobia. The model proposes that emetophobia results from a constellation of factors including a general anxiety-vulnerability factor, a tendency to somatize anxiety as gastrointestinal distress, a tendency to catastrophically misappraise nausea and other gastrointestinal symptoms, hypervigilance to gastrointestinal cues, beliefs about the unacceptability of vomiting, negatively reinforced avoidance behavior, and selective confirmation biases. A formulation-based treatment package for emetophobia is outlined, including arousal management skills, distraction/attention training, exposure and cognitive restructuring. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Just An Outline for Future Emetophobia Studies
As a sufferer of emetophobia (fear of vomiting) since childhood, I am interested in anything written on the subject as, most emets know, there is not much. This document is an article from the Journal of Anxiety Disorders, as such it is very dry and scholarly using many esoteric words and ideas (such as "serotonin specific reuptake inhibitors") that make the article difficult to read for those, like myself, not familiar with the terminology of psychologists. It is 16 pages but 3 1/2 of those pages are just a list of the sources used, some specifically on emetophobia but many on panic disorders in general and all coming from scholarly journals. The reference guide alone seems very useful; however, the author admits that even the studies specifically on emetophobia are limited. The main study was Internet-based using 56 volunteers. In another study of one sufferer, the author equated a "fear of vomiting" to a "fear of being vomited on." Most researchers place emetophobia in the category of "Specific Phobia (Other Type)" and, as such, do not concentrate their studies on it.

I was mainly interested in reading the section on treatment as that is an area that is sorely under-researched.Well, I was disappointed.Aside from a few paragraphs on exposure (either witnessing someone vomiting or inducing vomiting) which, for most emets, is not a realistic option (have you seen the Family Guy episode where they drink Ipecac to see who can hold out from vomiting the longest?), the other forms of treatment (cognitive restructuring, distraction, arousal management, and psychopharmacology) are mostly covered in one paragraph each.None of these treatments are fully explained as the author is writing to an audience who is no doubt familiar with these methods.Basically, he just lists a couple of sources on each and explains that more research is needed.I would summarize the entire article the same way: we don't know much but this subject is important, it affects many people, and it needs more research.

I do not recommend purchasing this article unless you need to read everything on the subject and are of the scholarly type who would like to read the sources that are listed (they include page numbers). It reads like a term paper for an advanced course in psychology.Unfortunately, it is open-ended and succeeds in just being a call for future studies on emetophobia and, for that, the author should be commended.I'll give two stars just for tackling this subject (it is not the author's fault that better sources on treatment aren't available) but speaking as a sufferer, I didn't find this article worth even the $7.95 I paid. ... Excerpt: Vomiting (known medically as emesis and informally as throwing up and a number of other terms) is the forceful expulsion of the contents of one's stomach through the mouth and sometimes the nose. Vomiting may result from many causes, ranging from gastritis or poisoning to brain tumors, or elevated intracranial pressure. The feeling that one is about to vomit is called nausea, which usually precedes, but does not always lead to, vomiting. Antiemetics are sometimes necessary to suppress nausea and vomiting, and, in severe cases where dehydration develops, intravenous fluid may need to be administered to replace fluid volume. Vomiting is different from regurgitation, although the two terms are often used interchangeably. Regurgitation is the return of undigested food back up the esophagus to the mouth, without the force and displeasure associated with vomiting. The causes of vomiting and regurgitation are generally different. Vomiting can be dangerous if the gastric content gets into the respiratory tract. Under normal circumstances the gag reflex and coughing will prevent this from occurring, however these protective reflexes are compromised in persons under the influences of certain substances such as alcohol or anesthesia. The individual may choke and asphyxiate or suffer an aspiration pneumonia. Prolonged and excessive vomiting will deplete the body of water (dehydration) and may alter the electrolyte status. Gastric vomiting leads to the loss of acid (protons) and chlorine directly. Combined with the resulting alkaline tide, this leads to hypochloremic me...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=8507183 ...
