5-0 out of 5 stars Neuropsychiatry of Epilepsy Explained by the Experts
I am neither a neurologist nor am I a psychiatrist. I do have a personal interest in epilepsy. I did not read the entire book.

I found the chapters pertaining to my personal interests to be outstanding. This book did not put me to sleep. The writing was very good. The descriptions of the various epilepsy related psychiatric syndromes were very enlightening and I was immediately able to recognize the patterns in an individual I know who has epilepsy.

Chapters that I read covered such topics as Epilepsy and Learning Disorders, Subtle Effects of Epilepsy, Agression and Epilepsy, Epilepsy and Suicide, Postictal Psychosis, Dementia and Epilepsy, Risk of Cognitive Decline, Effects of Antiepileptic Drugs on Behavior, Effects of Drugs on Cognitive Function. There were other chapters that I am sure will be of interest to others.

I recommend this book. I came away with a broad understanding of the issues, having gone into it not fully appreciating what is known and what can be done about the psychiatric conditions that can be associated with epilepsy. ... Read more

Book Description
An understanding of mechanisms underlying seizure disorders depends critically on the insights provided by model systems. In particular with the development of cellular, molecular, and genetic investigative tools, there has been an explosion of basic epilepsy research.Models of Seizures and Epilepsy brings together, for the first time in 30 years, an overview of the most widely-used models of seizures and epilepsy.Chapters cover a broad range of experimental approaches (from in vitro to whole animal preparations), a variety of epileptiform phenomenology (including burst discharges and seizures), and suggestions for model characterization and validation, such as electrographic, morphologic, pharmacologic, and behavioral features.Experts in the field provide not only technical reviews of these models but also conceptual critiques - commenting on the strengths and limitations of these models, their relationship to clinical phenomenology, and their value in developing a better understanding and treatments.Models of Seizures and Epilepsy is a valuable, practical reference for investigators who are searching for the most appropriate laboratory models for addressing key questions in the field. It also provides an important background for physicians, fellows, and students, offering insight into the potential for advances in epilepsy research.

· Comprehensive analysis of "What the models model" to guide the selection of each model, and what specific questions it will answer

Book Description
William Svoboda channels a lifetime of clinical experience into three areas--language, learning, and behavior--that encompass the major difficulties of children "growing up with epilepsy."In each area he looks at why the problems arise and assesses potential treatments. The focus of this comprehensive work is on the complete care of the child rather than on diagnosis, classification and medication alone. More than half of all epileptic children have interrelated language, learning, and/or behavior complications that persist beyond seizure control and present problems for health and educational systems. This reference makes a significant contribution to furthering the knowledge of clinicians, educators, and language specialists about the needs of this special pediatric population. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Thought provoking information
I'm interested in unusual therapies, and know someone who has a child with multiple disabilities including a seizure disorder.I found a videotape about this diet at a rummage sale a few years ago, and while it makes the diet sound relatively simple, this book says otherwise and goes into detail about people who are good candidates for the diet and those who are not. Many testimonials and case studies are presented as well.

The woman I know was given this option and said, "We don't want to starve our child."After reading this book, I can see where she was coming from. The restricted calories don't concern me as much as the fluid restriction, which could potentially be very dangerous and the book addresses this problem as well.

For the proper person, this diet could potentially be a lifesaver and it's worth trying if all factors are appropriate.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Ketogenic Diet 4th Edition 2007
This book contains up to date information in relation to the ketogenic diet and other seizure control options that is also easy to read and understand by non professional people.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very highly recommended as a top alternative to medication for kids with epilepsy.
If you have or know a child with epilepsy, THE KETOGENIC DIET: A TREATMENT FOR CHILDREN AND OTHERS WITH EPILEPSY is a 'must' for your consideration: it offers a solution beyond medication which provides a doctor-supervised diet high in fat and low in carbs and proteins, which limits calories - and is proven to control seizures. There've been many advances in the field, so this updated 4th edition is essential even for library holdings with prior editions. Besides the latest research, this book includes a new section on the Atkins diet and other alternative nutritional therapies. Very highly recommended as a top alternative to medication for kids with epilepsy.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Timid Author With a Powerful Story
From the viewpoint of the disability activist, the only major work on the history of epilepsy should be a civil rights book about the mistreatment of a minority group since ancient times. Dr Temkin will only admit that people with epilepsy have always been "objects of horror and disgust". Beyond that point his book is 2500 years of intellectual history, too much of it elaborate details of long discredited theories. Yet the author's research is so outstanding and his bibliography of 1120 books and articles so complete that anything less than a 5 star rating would be improper. Dr Temkin deserves special credit for uncovering Richard Caton's 1875 article "The Electric Discharges of the Brain". In 2001 the Medieval Madness Syndrome continues of people with epilepsy being rejected by family, friends, and employers because they have a "deliberately chosen illness". Our timid author declines to ask how this could be true 126 years after the actual cause of epilepsy was discovered. But his research demands an answer to that question. ... Read more

Book Description
It is well recognized that there is an intimate and reciprocal interaction between epilepsy and sleep. The book, Epilepsy and Sleep is a ground-breaking, comprehensive source for exploring this correlation and is especially timely because of the considerable growth in the understanding of the physiology underlying both sleep and epilepsy. An insightful reference, it presents many of the complex physiologic mechanisms underlying epilepsy--sleep interaction and highlights sleeping disorder symptoms that may be related to epilepsy.
The annual cost of treating epilepsy in the United States is an estimated $12.5 billion, according to a report issued January 2000 by The Epilepsy Foundation. The Foundation also reports that more than 180,000 Americans develop epilepsy each year. However, thousands more cases may be misdiagnosed as sleeping disorders, causing these figures to jump significantly. This correlation and diagnosis can help determine the correct type of medication to administer to regulate the symptoms, in turn saving hundreds of hours of lost time at work and millions of dollars.

* Provides the first comprehensive source of information available on the correlation between epilepsy and sleep
* Outlines sleeping disorder symptoms which may in fact be caused by epilepsy

5-0 out of 5 stars A modern approach to learning about epilepsy
This really is an excellent introduction forNeurology trainees who are looking for a guide to the management of patients with epilepsy. It uses a "Problem based" approach, with typical clinical scenarios, and then discuses the options, and approaches to management.
What I liked was it's down to earth pragmatic style. It is not a reference book, and doen't pretend to be, but it does teach you how to look after patients. I have lent it to some of my trainees to read, their comments are that it tells them things that they won't find in other textbooks, and it gives them confidence in the clinic.
My one criticism is that the appendicies are too long, and not that relevent for the European reader. ... Read more
