Product Description
Epilepsy is a difficult illness to control; up to 35% of patients do not respond fully to traditional medical treatments. For this reason, many sufferers choose to rely on or incorporate complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) into their treatment regimens. Written for physicians, knowledgeable laypersons, and other professionals, Complementary and Alternative Therapies for Epilepsy bridges the worlds of traditional medicine and CAM to foster a broader perspective of healthcare for patients. The book respects cultural differences that may incorporate alternative medicine into a medical management program, and encourages patients to safely continue receiving necessary medical treatments. Wherever possible, scientific evidence supports the choice of treatment modalities, as well as the effectiveness of a combined traditional and CAM approach. Readers will find incisive discussions in sections on:Learning to Reduce Seizures; Asian, Herbal and Homeopathic Therapies; Nutritional Therapies; Alternative Medical Therapies ; Oxygen Therapies; Manipulation and Osteopathic Therapies; and Music, Art, and Pet Therapies. From stress and epilepsy, to acupuncture, massage, craniosacral therapies, homeopathy, ketogenic diets, aromatherapy, hypnosis, and more, the book is all-inclusive and enlightening. Additional commentary by the editors provides a critical vantage point from which to interpret the data and viewpoints of the contributors, all experts in the therapies presented. This balanced, scientific approach will appeal to even those most skeptical of alternative therapies, making the book essential for every professional who seeks to provide the broadest range of effective patient care. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A must read!
Great book! An interesting and factual collaboration on most alternative therapies, all tried and tested. A must read for anyone dealing with epilepsy.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read!!
If you are diagnosed with Epilepsy, this IS the book to read, especially if you do not want to be on medication the rest of your life or if you do not want seizures (and who does?). There is a wealth of information in this book that has not been published before. Especially the work of Donna J. Andrews is worth considering, since she has a 80% successrate with lowering the amount of seizures in her patients. But there are others. Biofeedback is a great tool as well for some. A friend of mine got her seizures way down with this method. She had many a day, now she has none. I am so proud of her because she refused to be on meds from day one. It is invaluable to know you can do something about epilepsy by understanding and working with your triggers. There is a lesson here to be understood. You can improve the quality of your life. And there are many options. Read this book and find out. This book is worth every penny!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Enlightening and Long Overdue
I am a physician with a personal interest in epilepsy. To read about complementary and alternative therapies for epilepsy in a medical text that is edited by recognized experts has been a real joy. They have done us all a great service by presenting the information in a respectful but scientifically critical manner.
This book should be on every neurologist's shelf. It should also be on the shelf of all other physician practitioners that treat epilepsy. Drs. Devinsky, Schachter and Pacia have produced a work that is long overdue.
Treating epilepsy can be frustrating since traditional medicine is not always successful in delivering the ideal result (no seizures and no side effects). Patients in desperation are looking for something that will work. Some patients may just want another option because of any one of a number of reasons including fear of potential long-term side effects of medications, or because they harbor a general mistrust of modern medicine for example.
With the advent of the Internet, patients and their families are discovering that there are options available which their physicians have not told them about. Some of the options may have merit and some may not. Most patients do not have the medical sophistication to tell the difference. Many doctors do not have the time or the interest to find out. The problem is that when patients go to their physicians with their new-found knowledge, and they are met with total ignorance, indifference or worse yet, arrogance, the physicians immediately lose credibility with their patients.
By reading and understanding this book that covers a broad range of "alternative and complementary therapies for epilepsy," physicians will be able to better understand what their patients are talking about and will be able to speak with knowledge and credibility when these ideas are brought up by patients. Having this knowledge will also prompt physicians during the intake interviews to ask if any of these alternative approaches are being used. That information may help with drug dosages (some herbs or supplements can affect enzyme induction) and help to explain treatment failure.
Medical practices that serve many well informed patients may see increasing numbers of people asking about these things. That type of patient is expecting more than just a prescription refill and a follow-up in 3-6 months. It could be that some physicians will suggest some of these ideas on their own if they seem right for a particular patient. Spending the extra time and effort may be hard to do because physicians are pushed harder and harder to do more and more in less time, and most practices don't have time during a visit to do more than just the basics. Just the same some people are expecting more.
The chapters are generally concise and mostly well referenced and are organized in a very interesting fashion; an expert that champions a particular form of alternative or complementary therapy writes the chapter, and the editors in a very respectful fashion make comments on the ideas presented. They often point out how well the available scientific evidence may or may not support the assertions of the chapter authors. The editors' comments range from very encouraging to highly doubtful, especially when judged by the standard of the double-blind study.
Chapter contents include: 1) Relation of Complementary and Alternative Therapies for Epilepsy to Western Medicine, 2) The standards for clinical trials to prove effectiveness of a therapy (the Double Blind trial), 3 Treating epilepsy with stress reduction, 4) The neurobehavioral approach, 5) Self control, eliminating triggers etc., 6) Neurofeedback, 7) Autogenic training, 8) Massage, 9) Aromatherapy and Hypnosis, 10) Meditation, 11) Exercise and Yoga, 12) Ayurveda, 13) Herbal therapy, 14) Phytotherapy (more herbal therapy), 15) Homeopathy, 16) Naturopathic Medicine, 17) Traditional Chinese Medicine, 18) Acupuncture, 19) Nutrition, 20) Fatty acids in the diet, 21) The Ketogenic diet, 22) Hormonal therapy, 23) Trancranial magnetic stimulation, 24) Hyperbaric oxygen, 25) Rebreathing to use CO2 to dilate cerebral vessels to increase cerebral oxygen delivery, 26) Chiropractic, 27) Osteopathic Approach, 28) Craniosacral Therapy, 29) Music Therapy, 30) Art Therapy, 31) Pet Therapy
Particularly enlightening chapters are numbers12-22, where herbs, vitamins, food supplements and other nutritional approaches are described rather nicely. Two somewhat disturbing chapters for me are the ones on Naturopathic Medicine (16), and the Osteopathic approach in children (27). The part of the naturopathic medicine chapter that disturbs me the most is the philosophy that epilepsy is possibly a result of lifestyle, diet or habits of the individual and can be cured if the practitioner can find the correct cause and effect a change. Fully subscribing to such an approach could lead to spending big bucks on food supplements and other things that have no proven value or could actually complicate standard medical treatment. In spite of that problem, naturopaths have many fascinating ideas that are worthy of further investigation. The Osteopathic chapter is largely anecdotal. The references are quite dated as well. From modalities that purport to be scientifically oriented I expected better.
The greatest value of the book for me is, understanding how others besides those in mainstream medicine think about epilepsy. I highly recommend this book.

Product Description
Epilepsy is one of the most common neurological disorders, and original observations in the field are often the key to diagnosis and successful treatment. Physicians new to the field as well as seasoned practitioners will benefit from more than one hundred case vignettes that explore the universe of epilepsy as it presents in daily practice. Some of these cases challenge long-held views about epilepsy and others bring the reader to the limits of our understanding of epilepsy, both in clinical and basic science. To improve the interface of clinical and basic science in epilepsy, basic scientists comment on the potential mechanisms underlying clinical observations, and clinicians assess the potential impact of recent results of experiments in the laboratory. This book highlights the importance that original observations have in inspiring both new treatments and continued research.

* Presents unique and challenging case vignettes in epilepsy contributed by eminent physicians in the field
* Provides practicing physicians with examples of how baffling cases were handled and solved
* A new section provides a translational perspective, with basic scientists discussing the potential mechanisms underlying original clinical observations, and clinical scientists discussing the clinical implications of experiments in the epilepsy laboratory ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best substantial books on epilepsy
Until recently, this book was out of print and totally unavailable. ( I had to purchase it three times from used booksellers. One copy was destroyed in shipping, one was lost and the third one I had to purchase from one of those rip-off book dealers in Great Britain. )

BTW, this book is HARDBACK and not paperpack so you are getting what you paid for.

Other books to consider would be:
1) Handbook of Epilepsy Treatment 2nd ed. by Simon Shorvon
2) Status Epilepticus by Simon Shorvon
3) Photosensitive Epilepsy ( New Edition ) by F. A. Graham ( dated but interesting )
4) Partial Seizures and Interictal Disorders by David P. Moore

This book, The Epilepsies: Seizures, Syndromes and Management, has one of the best sections on photosensitive epilepsy in print(from pages 452-472 ). This section, alone, justifies the price and the entire book is of similar value and quality

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Note that the following are general comments about epilepsy and do NOT refer to this book.

In general, there is not much particularly interesting and useful regarding photosensitive epilepsy. To me, testing for photosensitive epilepsy by exposing the patient to a strobe pulsing at various frequencies is marginally diagnostic. ( Outside of discotheques, how often you you encounter pulse trains produced by strobes ? )

Fluorescent lights, computer video display terminals, the dotted lines on a road, fences, trees planted along a roadway, even the oscillations of quaking aspen leaves; NONE of these produce waveforms similar to a strobe. ( Strobes have very, very low duty cycles whereas more natural sources of repetitive flashing / blinking have much higher duty cycles - say from 1% for trees to 50% for fencing or blinking produced by various poorly designed pieces of electronic equipment.

There is an extremely interesting form of epilepsy called non-convulsive status epilepticus. There is a similar form of epilepsy accompanied by complete paralysis ( NOT Todd's Paralysis ) lasting hours or even a day with no postictal confusion. ( There is a reference to this in Moore but I cannot find the page )

It is my thesis that many, many people have a sub-clinical form of epilepsy, better described as cortical irritability, in which they have problems, specifically, with fluorescent lights and computer displays. ( The previous paragraph suggests that some individuals affected with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome or Multiple Chemical Sensitivities may actually have epilepsy ) There are also an enormous variety of reflex epilepsies.

Anyways, I'm warn out so enough is enough.

Product Description
The clinical management of patients with epilepsy and the associated medical literature are rapidly evolving. This book differs from other epilepsy textbooks by focusing specifically on topics where the available evidence is sufficiently well developed to be synthesised into straightforward summaries of proven therapies. When evidence is missing or there is doubt, controversy or ambiguity, the distinguished authors offer treatment recommendations based on practice guidelines or consensus statements that span the gaps in evidence while pointing to those areas where further research is needed. The initial chapters cover critically important aspects of antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) and surgical treatment such as when to start and stop AEDs, how to monitor their effectiveness, special considerations in women who become pregnant, and when to consider surgery to alleviate seizures. The following chapters cover the therapy of seizures when they develop after traumatic brain injury or stroke, and the treatment of concomitant depression and anxiety in patients with epilepsy. The final chapters discuss emerging topics in epilepsy: the treatment of the post-ictal state, technologies to predict and detect seizures, strategies for closing the treatment gap and sudden unexpected death in epilepsy. The contributors are renowned experts in their fields who successfully and succinctly present state-of-the-art reviews based on the medical evidence designed to help the clinician be as best informed as possible in the care of patients with epilepsy. ... Stuart Ross McCallum shares a true account of his battle with epilepsy-beginning with the peculiar sensations he experienced as a teenager that led to his diagnosis and concluding with his eventual recovery from a temporal lobe lobectomy.McCallum vividly describes his twenty-year journey of living with epilepsy and how this unpredictable disease has not only impacted his life but the lives of everyone around him. For years he operated a business and managed his staff while battling an ever-increasing number of seizures. As his condition worsened and his postseizure responses became more intense, he was often prone to violent outbursts that threatened his safety as well as the safety of those in his inner circle. McCallum shares how the perception of the disease and the socially unacceptable behaviors that occurred as a result of his seizures eventually forced him to risk everything-he made the life-altering decision to undergo two brain operations that he hoped would provide freedom from a life of instability, danger, and stares from strangers.Beyond My Control provides an honest, emotional look into a highly complex and often misunderstood condition and how one man's perseverance helped him break through the darkness to find hope on the other side. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A WARM, ENGAGING MEMOIR

After reading Stuart Ross McCallum's Beyond My Control, I felt like I had just finished having a warm, open conversation with a good friend. This very personable author does a wonderful job of taking the reader through his twenty-year struggle with epilepsy.

McCallum's first awareness of epilepsy began with peculiar auras that produced sensations unlike anything he'd ever known. As time went on, these auras became a warning that something much more serious was about to happen. McCallum then began to experience violent frightening episodes that not only threatened his well-being, but those around him. This was all the more terrifying as he could not remember the wild things he would do and say after the episodes had ended. They were, as the title of this memoir indicates, beyond his control.

After much suffering, McCallum is eventually presented with the opportunity to consider seizure surgery -- and to consider the pros and cons of living with the most important decision of his life.

What I most appreciated about this book was the author's deep love and gratitude toward his family and friends, especially his wife, Lisa. What I found extremely valuable in McCallum's story is that I learned much more about the full scope of epilepsy than I ever knew. This was truly a compelling, eye-opening story that was a true pleasure to read. It is an easy and engaging read by a true gentleman.

5-0 out of 5 stars Insightful, Motivation and Life Changing!
Stuart Ross McCallum's memoir, Beyond My Control, leaves you with an amazing respect for this man, who endured a lifetime of epilepsy, resulting in symptoms, seizures, surgery's and depression. The detailed description of the auras and seizures really take you into the hell of this disease. If you think you know about epilepsy, you will find that you didn't know the half of it after reading this book. The scary details of the aftermath when a seizure ended and the deep dark hole that Stuart had to climb out of over and over again. I read this with my jaw ajar in disbelief that this man could accomplish all that he did while fighting this battle. By the time you get to the end of the book, the epilepsy takes a back seat to his strength and courage.

This is a must read for anyone who is battling with epilepsy OR NOT. Stuart Ross McCcallum's sheer determination will inspire you to be the very best you can be, in any situation. Brilliantly written!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Universal Journey
As a Marriage and Family Therapist for over 20 years and as a person with a debilitating illness myself, I felt compelled to share my thoughts about this compelling book with other potential readers. Yes, "Beyond My Control" delineates a man's courageous journey with epilepsy and a battle with an eating disorder, but.... it is so much more complex than that. It is a transformational journey that goes beyond these issues. Many of my clients/friends, and colleagues over the years, have struggled with illnesses, anxiety, fear, etc. This book is a universal story that all of us can be inspired by and is motivating for us all to continue to pursue our dreams no matter what our personal battles entail! I laughed and cried and experienced the gamut of human emotions while reading this book and it was very difficult to put it down until I was finished. AND even after reading it I am still haunted by the wonderful way this author expresses his personal thoughts and experiences, his wonderful sense of humor in the midst of very dark times and the testimony of his courage and that of his wife's. Through it all, this marvelous couple never waivered in their love for each other and for their children, in a way that is a testimony to the power of love to transform our daily lives. I wish I could give this book 10 stars, but I hope many more people will read this wonderful book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Truly moving
Throughout this book, I myself was drawn to Stuart's remarkable bravery to continue the search for a new treatment. He endured so many struggles with seizures coupled with an uncertainty of occurrence and an embarrassment, only to gain the strength to overcome.

I commend him for rising above and sharing those difficult moments. I would recommend his book for people who have no hope when it comes to seeking medical advice. I would also recommend this as a required reading for Neurology Interns because it is the one on one example illustrating their field of medicine.

Thank you Stuart.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Amazing Story about an Courageous Man
This autobiographical account of a man's battle with epilepsy is extremely inspiring and uplifting, and is also a captivating read. It is written in a compelling, personal voice that engages the reader from the outset. It is impossible not to have great admiration for this courageous man and to feel deep sympathy for the arduousness of his journey , and yet Stuart McCallum never lapses into mawkishness. His narrative is well-crafted, straightforward, poignant, and effective. I read the book in one setting, and when I had finished I felt like I had traveled a difficult road with a dear friend. I highly recommend this extraordinary story written by a remarkable man! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good read aloud
This was a good book to read aloud although if you were reading it to the age group that it is meant to be read to, then your students are not going to understand all the technical terms used throughout the book. It was good however to start off with this book for a presentation to adults because it gave them a good idea of what epilepsy is before the actual lesson began.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful for my son
I bought this book for my 4 year old son who has epilepsy. It was helpful in explaining what's happening to him, why he has to take medicine every day, and why he has to go see the doctor. Also, it was really helpful when he had to have an MRI because it explains the test and has an illustration of the machine.

5-0 out of 5 stars So glad I found this!
My 3 yr. old daughter had a seizure suddenly last year and our family was thrust quickly into a world with tests and appointments that we didn't understand and a diagnosis that was bewildering to say the least.I was so excited to find this book as it explained to my daughter from a child's perspective what had happened to her and the tests and appointments that we continued to undergo. It was also a great reminder to me of how confusing this whole situation must have seemed to her as well!Would recommend this book to anyone with a child that has experienced seizures or has been diagnosed with epilepsy. Also, to doctors and educators to teach other children and family members about the diagnosis.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gentle Story about Seizures in Kid's
This is a beautifully illustrated book for children, parents and families of those dealing with seizures and epilepsy. The story is a simple one of friendship between a boy and a girl when Teddy starts having seizures. The book is well written and helps kids understand what seizures are and what do they have to go through with test and treatment.
I found the explanation of the EEG quiet genial....It is like a phone and your brain is talking through the EEG.....very easy for a child to capture.
The illustrations are colorful and vibrant and the paper material of excellent quality.
This book is a gem and should help parents and children understand seizures and epilepsy. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful & exhaustive source of info in a handbook format
What can I say? As a person, affected by epilepsy, I was looking for a book like this one for a long time...For a mere $5, it gives you all the info you need about the disorder in a handbook format (which what I was specifically looking for). It covers both trad. and non-trad. methods ofcontrol. It has a few charts (medications, etc.) and aslo a few usefuladdresses of organizations, who help people suffering from epilepsy. So, Ithink, you REALLY NEED TO HAVE THIS BOOK as an every day guide.

4-0 out of 5 stars A practical, clear and common-sense approach to Epilepsy
This book talks about Epilepsy in plain language and explains the treatments and alternative therapies available. It is approved by both the British and American Holistic Medical Associations.

Although I use thebook as an adjunct to medication therapy, the book also discusses complementary and alternative treatments available to those unable to takemedication.

This book helped me understand the relationship betweeneveryday living and my seizures. My questions were answered by this bookand so were other questions that I never even thought to ask myNeurologist. The author made me understand that I should do practicalthings: take my medication at the same time everyday, eat and sleepregularly and use relaxation techniques for stress reduction.I had neverrealized that there might be a connection between stress and my seizuresand the subject never came up in my visits with my neurologist.

My adviceis to get this book for a better understanding of Epilepsy and how you canimprove the quality of your life while living with it. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book for absence seizures
When my son was diagnosed with epilepsy, I was very surprised that this was the only children's book I could find on the subject. This is a good book, but my son suffered from grand mal seizures. This book is about absence seizures, in which you stare. It covered everything quite well and even mentioned other types of seizures. I would recommend, especially if your child suffers from absence seizures.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good for young children with seizures
My daughter did like the book, it was helpful for her to understand the seizures

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Youngsters!
My 4 year old daughter recently had been diagnosed with Absence Seizures. This book was just what we needed. It gives her something to identify with.Lee also has Absence Seizures. Most of the other books I have looked at covered the Grand-mal Seizures.GREAT BOOK to help a young child understand in a simple way of what is happening to them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for kids dealing with seizures.
This book is very good to read to young children to explain epilepsy. It is put into simple terms and gives a good general explaination. The pictures are detailed, fun and colorful which will help engage the child's interest. This book is good for anyone who wants their child to learn that there should be no 'stigma' attatched to epilespy- it is a disease that can (in most cases) be helped with medicine. It would be excellent for a child recently diagnosed with seizues. It is good for a family which may have a child with epilepsy to help siblings understand what is happening. It is also a book which can be used in the classroom. It is brief yet it gets the message across. This book is part of a series of books about Special Needs and Deborah Moss (author)takes a very careful look at how a child might feel if he or she experienced seizures and that life continues and will be normal. It helps alleviate fears. It also works well because it portrays a rabbit instead of a child with seizures.I highly recommend it to everyone.I have not read the other books in the collection but I imagine they are just as good. ...
