Product Description
The techniques in Live, Learn, and Be Happy with Epilepsy, will help the reader build the inner power to do anything or become anything they want in life. The approaches in this book for dealing with epilepsy will enable the reader to reform a better direction in their everyday life of living and dealing with their disorder. Most important, this book shows the reader that they they can live a happy, healthy life with epilepsy. There are people here that understand what they go through and support them. This program will help you build confidence in yourself. Once they establish self-assurance, the reader will start to see their inner strength boost. When one quality improves, all their other attributes will enhance also. This book will give them the tools to learn how to incorporate epilepsy into their life so the reader can live with the disorder on a positive note. The reader can make life anything they want if they have positive goals to focus on and if they have a good understanding of how to approach them. This book gives the reader the materials they need to gain encouragement and strength to overcome having epilepsy and being able to live life to its fullest. In this book, we will focus on certain topics related to epilepsy that not many have discussed. One of the main goals in this book is to help the reader recognize that life has much to offer. Life does not have to stop just because you have epilepsy. As mentioned earlier, in this book we will be discussing what people go through emotionally when they have epilepsy. We will be going over different ways to help the reader emotionally, physically and spiritually. The aim in this book is to show readers how to live with epilepsy, empowering them to take responsibility for their life and well-being. Although, I acknowledge how other people with epilepsy feel living with epilepsy-there is a deeper level of human experience that is necessary in order to live with epilepsy. Unlike other books on epilepsy, Live, Learn and Be Happy with Epilepsy, does not focus on the same subject matter. Instead, it tries to motivate epileptics, urging readers to create their own unique journal by employing psychological and spiritual practices in combination with a variety of more traditional diet and exercise regiments. While seemingly revolutionary, the message is simple: It is important that epileptics learn how to live with epilepsy and endure it. Everything you do and say affects the people around you. Eventually if people with epilepsy do not learn how to deal with all these issues, they could end up really destroying themselves emotionally, physically and spiritually. One way to prevent this from happening is to develop a lifestyle that is suitable for your own needs. The reader needs to make sure that they create a lifestyle that is going to make them happy over time. They need to be their own designer, creating pathways to a fulfilling future. There is a whole world in front of you. This world has millions of opportunities just waiting for you to encounter. It does not matter what age you are. You can achieve anything you put your mind too. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good review
This book "Live, Learn, and Be Happy With Epilepsy" is a good reminder of some simple, yet effective methods of coping with epilepsy. It obviously isn't a cure, but a helpful guide in giving some overlooked strategies in dealing with some of the non-physical aspects of the disease such as stress, anxiety, etc. This book is a good tool in the toolbox in dealing with epilepsy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Information
This book has ben a life saver for my mother who has epilepsy. There are really good recommendations for every day control of the disorder and how to live a happier life. The book is easy to read and has a wealth of information you won't find anywhere else. Kudos to the author.

1-0 out of 5 stars Poorly written, potentially dangerous
The author of "How to Get Wealthy Writing Informational Books for the Internet", also the author of this book, should be stopped. The information presented was only minimally specfic for epilepsy and included recommendations for relaxation, self-improvement, diet, exercise, etc. that one suspects will come out from the same author for a multitude of other diagnoses. One of the first recommendations for relaxation was to take a warm bath. Most neurologists warn against taking a bath alone because of the risk of drowning if a seizure occurs. The many grammar and spelling mistakes leads me to believe no editors or spellcheckers ever got near this manuscript. There are many books on the topic that are better than this one. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description

Epilepsy is a prevalent condition affecting approximately 1% of the general population. Its behavioral effects on cognition and memory can be as debilitating as the physical aspects caused by ongoing seizures. This book is intended primarily for clinical neuropsychologists who encounter patients with epilepsy, either through employment in academic medical centers or in general practice. The book is of particular value to those working in a comprehensive epilepsy center, as the volume provides extensive coverage of the many clinical procedures performed in that setting. Procedures reviewed in this volume include neuropsychological testing, the Wada procedures, and brain mapping. Chapters include descriptions of the purpose of these procedures, reviews of the recent literature, clinical vignettes, in addition to concrete recommendations on how to actually conduct the procedures. Many chapters provide examples of test forms and stimuli useful for conducting some of the procedures reviewed in this book. Neurologists and pediatricians will also find this book to be helpful, as many medical practitioners consider the activities of clinical neuropsychologists working in their settings to be somewhat mysterious. This book makes the details of neuropsychological practice in an epilepsy setting more accessible than what has been present in prior literature.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book for people with Epilepsy
About seven years ago, I was operated of a benign, very large brain tumor, a Meningioma. That was a life changing event, and it changed me completely from the way I used to be in every aspect of my life. Fortunately, even with some limitations, in time I was able to go back to my normal life and my work activity.

Just over 20 months ago, on my way to work, I was t-boned by a driver who was too impatient at a traffic light waiting to change. He hit me just before the door, and the impact sent my car to a ditch. The car was totaled, but with the impact, I re-injured the part of my brain where I was operated a few years back. That caused me a stroke, with the end result of an instant paralysis of the right side of my body and the lost of my speech. With time and therapy I recovered my speech and my mobility, but not my coordination.

About 3 months after my accident, I started having frequent Grad Mal seizures, which until recently happened on average once every 4 weeks. I have tried several drugs, some of them with little impact, but with awful side effects.

When it was determined that the "drug-only" solution was not working, I received a VNS.I had high hopes, but I also experienced some additional problems, with an impact with my quality of life.

I hope that the VNS alternative will work, but I am already discussing with my neurologist and neurosurgeon about the possibility of another brain surgery, if my quality of life keep getting worse.

Leanne Chilton in her book captures quite well that "something" that cannot be described when we have to go through so many unexpected things, and w have to overcome so many obstacles. When she talks about the fact that she was home-bound at times, it hit home. When she talked about the operation that she had before she got better, she talks quite clear about all her concerns, and all the pains she had to endure. If I decide to go for the next surgery, I know it will be a difficult one, but I will be better prepared.

I did not expect to get a tutorial or a technical book in "Seizure Free", and I am glad I did not get that. She was a fighter during her battles with leukemia, and she is a remarkable woman.Wonderful Book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Informative
Chilton writes a highly informative and helpful book on brain surgery for the correction of epileptic seizures. It givesmedical information that I, as a brain surgery survivor for epilepsy also, did not have before reading the book.I found this book highly helpful and recommend it to any approaching an opportunity for surgery. --- author, Stephanie S. Sawyer,FACING ME, Breaking the Bonds of Seizure Confinement

5-0 out of 5 stars An Astonishing View From The Inside
Leanne Chilton's victory is revealed through an emotional journey of chilling, revealing passages into a world many have never understood. It is true that this is must-have information for those suffering seizure disorders. But it is equally true that it speaks of the silent acts of valor that go unseen for their grace and determination.Seizure disorders needn't have touched one's life to draw strength and inspiration from this remarkable work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Inspirational, You can't put this book down!
I loved Seizure Free from page one until the end. Ms. Chilton takes you on a journey through her experiences with having seizures and through her success with brain surgery. I recommend this book for anyone looking for hope. This book will definitely give you Hope! My family loved it, too!

5-0 out of 5 stars Top Choice for All
This book is an amazing first person account of one woman's journey, but it is much more than that. Ms. Chilton offers all of us an example of the kind of heart and spirit that it takes to overcome adversity and to triumph over it. I read it cover to cover in one day, unable to put it down. Once completing the book, I was left with a feeling of warmth and joy. It was as if I had come through the journey with Ms. Chilton myself. This is a MUST read for anyone dealing with this themselves. But it is also very entertaining, enlightening, enriching and inspirational. I would be remise if I didn't also mention how thorough, well organized and wonderfully written this book is. Ms. Chilton is obviously one amazing woman. It took a great deal of courage and caring for her to offer herself to help others in this way. I hope there is more to come, I would love to read a follow up. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My experience
Danielle,
You have given me hope that all of this will be in the past someday. Your book [Mommy, I Feel Funny!] has told me "No, you're not the only one with seizures." I can honestly say if I didn't write you that first letter, I don't know where I would be with this. You taught me how to be strong. You encouraged me to never give up. You are an amazing person and your book will go far! You are one of the few people I can completely relate to when it comes to having epilepsy and it will be great for young children experiencing the challenge to read your book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank you, Danielle
This is a book for all ages; I wish my parents would have had this book to read with me 25 years ago.Perhaps what I was experiencing then would have been less frightening for them and for me.I am thankful I can share this book with my sister as my niece has been diagnosed with epilepsy. It can be so hard to describe those "funny feelings."This book is both informational and fun to read.I have shared it with friends and family and will continue to do so.Thank you for sharing Nel's story, Danielle.

5-0 out of 5 stars awesome book

Product Description
Missing Michael A Mother's Story of Love, Epilepsy, and Perseverance is the author's moving account of her son's struggle with epilepsy, its complications, and the effects of the drugs used to treat it. The story covers a time period of over fifteen years as the family attempts to maintain normalcy even as Michael's condition and treatment often envelop him in a haze-like state. Michael's parents are faced with the unenviable task of determining how many seizures are "acceptable" and how much drug is simply "too much." Michael's condition over the years is wildly variable. There are moments, days, and weeks when he bears little resemblance to his gregarious, mischievous pre-seizure self. And while the family is grateful for Michael's presence however he is, there are moments of pure joy when his true personality manages to break through the drug-and-seizure-induced fog. Occasional comments from friends and family such as, "Michael seems more like himself," or "Michael seems so much more alert," are indicative that others in his life miss facets of Michael as well. In Missing Michael..., a mother lays bare her thoughts about school and health care systems, societal indifference, and the harm that results from lack of compassion and tolerance. She acknowledges the dedicated professionals who have helped Michael medically and academically. She applauds Michael's strength of spirit and his courage and ability to overcome substantial obstacles. And throughout its pages, this mother's story celebrates the bond of family and the power of love and hope. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great story!!!
This book was excellent.I have epilepsy myself and when I read it, it brought back memories of what happend to me when I was younger.I applaud the parents for showing the support they did for their children!

5-0 out of 5 stars A very helpful book!I am NOT the only one going through this!
This book was so helpful to me, as I care for my own epileptic daughter. It is a real look into our lives.I think that this book can help others understand what we go through when we cannot get the seizures under control.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read for Families
Missing Michael is a wonderful and compelling book.As gripping as their parents' love for their son is the unyielding love and support from Michael's big sister Meaghan.Families will be faced with challenging times and can learn from this Family that has truly persevered. This is an excellent work from author Mary Lou Connolly and should be shared with those you care for.

5-0 out of 5 stars Facing Uncertainties
As a parent and psychiatrist treating people with physical disabilities, I found this book a gripping and compelling account of the trials and tribulations of the Connolly family. I was impressed by the author's candid description of how she dealt with frustration, helplessness, and powerlessness of the life-and-death uncertainties of her son's seizure condition. I applaud her self-disclosure in the service of helping others who face similar challenges, and I recommend this book highly to any parent dealing with their child's illness.

5-0 out of 5 stars You are never alone...the village is always there
Last night, I sat down and read Missing Michael. The book did not leave my hands until I read the last page. For those that were a part of the Mary Lou and Michael's village, this book is a testament that it takes a lot of people to be a safety net for those that we love and respect.I applaud Mary Lou, Michael,Meaghan and Barry for not shutting out the village. For allowing those near and afar to help when and where needed. For taking the chance to allow others see the vulnerablity, yet the dignity that Micheal possessed (even when He did not always realize it). For me, the best part of the book shares that there are people within our village that do understand and care outnumber by far those that don't.This sharing is a primer to those who are friends, family, co-workers, andcare professionals of those with Seizure Disorders. Mary Lou thank you - I have a better understanding because of your words.
I look forward to the sequel where we get to see what Michael's mark on this world is realized. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars If your child has a seizure, you MUST have this book!!!
I can't begin to describe the grief and fear and utter isolation I felt when my daughter had her second seizure.I remembered that knowledge is power, and I needed to feel powerful. This book gave that to me and so much more!Suddenly terms made sense and I wasn't alone anymore. The section on family coping is amazing: it's as though the authors have reached inside your mind and put down every emotion you've gone through and some that are yet to come. There are case examples throughout that are uplifting, and yes, sometimes a little frightening, but very helpful to read and very enlightening. Most importantly, the book is positive throughout without minimizing what you're dealing with.My only complaint(and this goes for all books, websites, etc) is the use of percentages to illustrate how uncommon different seizure types are, or how many kids outgrow, etc.We already know our kids beat the odds, we don't need to be reminded, and frankly those numbers that in the beginning were a comfort, now are depressing.Again, if a child in your family has seizures, YOU MUST HAVE THIS BOOK!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Get this book, very informative, comforting, a must read!
This book contains the answers to most, if not all, of your questions regarding how seizures and epilepsy will affect your child and family. It will also help you know which questions to ask your child's physicians. It is a most complete work. In five sections it describes why seizures occur, diagnosing, treating, coping, and living with epilepsy. Please do yourself a great favor and purchase this book. It is written in language a parent will understand without previous medical knowledge and also it is written with compassion and optimism. I have recommended this book to my family and friends who wish to understand more of how epilepsy is affecting my son's life. You won't be disappointed, buy it today!

3-0 out of 5 stars Excellent First Book after Diagnosis
Excellent first book after you have received the diagnosis on your child.Good overview. After absorbing this information, you will want to move on to books that deal with the specific type of epilepsy with which your child has been diagnosed.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great comfort
When my 13 year old son had his first seizure, I completely freaked out. When he had a second seizure, I completely lost it and became full of anxiety, fear, and anger. But after reading this book, I found great comfort knowing that all the emotions I had were "normal".The book is also easy to understand, and covers a lot of information which has helped me to become more informed regarding seizures and epilepsy.

5-0 out of 5 stars A godsend for parents of a newly diagnosed child
After hours of internet searching and bookstore browsing with not a whole lot of usable results, finding this book was great. It is clearly written, easy to understand, and covers all of the different causes for seizures, as well as medications and some discussion of the physiology of seizures.I am ordering another copy for my daughter's preschool teachers, who want to be as educated as they can be so that they are prepared for potential seizures at school. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Extremely Poor and Precious Little At That
I waited some eight months to obtain a copy of this book -- eight months of my first pregnancy. It wasn't worth the wait. There is so little substantive information in this book tailored to pregnant women with epilepsy that I could have written the book myself. For example, except for the single statement that women should check with their doctors about whether their anti-epilepsy drugs are contraindicated, the chapter on breastfeeding features only general information on how to breastfeed an infant and offers nothing specifically about the breastfeeding problems of women with epilepsy. The chapter entitled "After Delivery" provides safety tips such as "Store medications in childproof containers" and "Use guards on stoves and cookers."For this we need a guide for women with epilepsy?Specific information for women with epilepsy throughout the rest of the book is largely common sense as well and offered in most pregnancy or epilepsy books. This is a complete waste of money. ... Product Description
Unlike many other diagnostic procedures, EEG, now over 80 years old, and epilepsy monitoring, now over 40 years old, have demonstrated their usefulness and stood the test of time. Although the benefits of these diagnostic procedures are clear, monitoring is currently not available to the majority of patients in need. One of the factors limiting broader implementation is the lack of practitioners with special expertise.

Epilepsy and Intensive Care Monitoring was developed to address this concern. This practical volume contains detailed chapters covering all areas of clinical epilepsy monitoring. Featuring expert authors from major epilepsy centers, this seminal work reviews all current procedures and applications for monitoring adults and children with epilepsy in the Epilepsy Monitoring Unit and the ICU.

Opening sections are devoted to indications, procedures, administrative considerations, and technical aspects of the Epilepsy Monitoring Unit and ICU monitoring, followed by dedicated sections on EEG diagnosis and localization and monitoring of neurological disorders in the Epilepsy Monitoring Unit and ICU. The book concludes with special procedures and an Appendix with guidelines for organizing epilepsy monitoring centers and technical aspects of EEG monitoring.

Key Features include

  • Covers both adult and pediatric Epilepsy Monitoring Unit and ICU monitoring
  • Contains over 235 high-quality EEGs and other illustrations, including an 8-page color section
  • Comprehensive coverage; no other book in this area has comparable breadth and depth
  • Clinical Focus Expert authors tell you when and how to perform the procedures they discuss

Epilepsy and Intensive Care Monitoring: Principles and Practice is the essential reference for clinical neurophysiologists and neurologists at all levels seeking to improve their monitoring skills or understand and implement the latest innovations. This text is also a useful one-volume resource for all others involved in the field including trainees, ICU physicians, EEG technologists, and more. ... Read more

Product Description
It is well known that the incidence of epilepsies is higher in this age period than in any other time in the life span. The frequent occurrence of seizures refractory to antiepileptic drug treatments is of great concern. On the opposite side of the spectrum, the group of benign epilepsy syndromes presented in this book is clearly more prevalent in childhood than the intractable epilepsies. Neurologists and paediatricians should be familiar with these conditions because accurate diagnosis, and its consequent good prognosis, may save much suffering to the family. Special emphasis, however, is given to the small proportion of children who, in spite of presenting a usually benign disease, show an atypical evolution which hampers their neuropsychological development. It is fundamental to be aware of the possible ill effects of some antiepileptic drugs in these cases. Finally, advancements in the recognition of new - and not so rare - epileptic syndromes are presented. All the subjects are supported by extensive experience of the authors based in large series of patients. ... Read more

Product Description
The third edition of a benchmark reference, Epilepsy in Childhood and Adolescence has been completely updated to include information on the latest pharmacological, alternative, and surgical treatments for epilepsy in children and adolescents. Presenting the information in a convenient tabular format, the book reviews the impact of epilepsy that develops in childhood. After defining what is and what is not a seizure, the authors guide you through the classification of seizures encountered at different stages of maturation.

The book provides several chapters on seizures in the neonatal period, febrile seizures, and the management of status epilepticus. It covers the pharmacology of antiepileptic drugs and their rational selection for use in specific epileptic syndromes and medically intractable epilepsy and guidelines for evaluating patients who would benefit from other forms of therapy including epilepsy surgery. The authors highlight the transition from childhood to adulthood and the impact this has on the management of the disease. Drawing on personal experience, they explore a practical approach to the diagnosis of the various causes of epilepsy, medical and surgical management, and when to refer the patient to an epilepsy specialist or clinic. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book for the Non-Neurologist
I bought this book thinking I was getting a textbook on pediatric neurology. It is a paperback of less than 200 pages. In spite of its brevity, it is loaded with information, much in tabular form.

For someone with a broader understanding of epilepsy it could be an adequate ready reference in the clinic.

The authors point out ongoing controversies regarding treatment and give reasonable recommendations. A good example is on page 100 where they describe the "kindling" phenomenon and cast doubt on the concept if the patient has had less than 10 seizures.

There is much solid science to be found in the tables. A good example is the chapter on drug treatment of epilepsy. The information table on each drug has a section that lists possible mechanisms of action. This allows the physician to chose based on target of action rather than just seizure type. The text is backed up with 225 references, some as recent as 2003.

I recommend this book for the non-neurologist physician that wants a concise reference that does not take up too much shelf space.

Product Description

Raising Brandon is quickly becoming a manual for parents who have children and adults with autism and special needs. The book informs, educates, and offers hope to a generation of parents struggling for answers.

Whether you are just starting out with a newborn and you sense something is wrong, or you have an adult child with autism or special needs and you do not know what to do, Raising Brandon will guide you to the answers you have been looking for.

Raising Brandon is filled with practical strategies, answers and solutions that will make life easier for you and your children, no matter their age or stage of development. It offers help, hope and inspiration to parents who do not know where to turn. You will be provided with the proven tools to help you work with your children's limitations. Rather than just thinking about what to do, now you can make positive results a reality.

Raising Brandon follows Starr's life from the birth of her younger son, Brandon, through his diagnosis of autism, untreatable epilepsy, and severe learning disorders. Her goal was to help him live his dream and become an independent adult. "When most people hear the word autism, they associate it with a child," says Starr. But like Brandon, now thirty-six, our children grow up, and we want them to not only survive in the world, but to live well. As parents, we have much to learn about ourselves in the process.

Intended for parents of special needs children as well as care providers, the book's chapters tell a particular story and reveal what the author has discovered. Where the book really shines is where Starr describes in detail how she created innovative ways to empower Brandon when professionals said independence would be impossible for him to achieve. She had to dig deep within, to change and empower herself first in order to help her son succeed. Raising Brandon not only guides parents on how to cope but also how to become a more conscious and evolved human being in the process. "Being conscious is the secret to success," says Starr. "I would have never thought that by helping my son succeed that I would be helping myself at the same time."

Brandon has achieved what the professionals believed to be impossible. He has been living in his own apartment, enjoying his independence, for the past twelve years. Although living alone may not be an option for every child, helping one's child to live the best life possible is every parent's dream. "There are thousands of children being diagnosed with autism every day, and those children will grow up. We need to have the resources in place to help them, and as parents, we need to know what to do," adds Starr.

There are areas in the book where Starr addresses the common pitfalls, such as shame, secrecy, and denial. She describes how damaging these can be personally, as well as on the marriage. Further, she provides proven tools for releasing yourself and breaking free to create a better life for you and your family.

Another message close to Starr's heart is made loud and clear throughout the book. Although her son was diagnosed with epilepsy and learning disorders at the age of nine, it was not until he turned thirty-two that Starr discovered Brandon had a form of autism called Asperger Syndrome. She stresses how early intervention is key, but Starr knows firsthand and shares, "It is never too late to get help for your children There is Hope. Brandon is living proof that anything is possible!"

5-0 out of 5 stars Epilepsy: Dynamic Models & Multicellular Processes
Milton and Jung's book is geared to the epileptologist, mathematical modelers, EEG personnel, the research scientist, and the neural engineer. This is not easily digested and understood. You have to read the book in sections to obtain the greatest insights. The book is better on theory and the physics of synchronization processes. The end of the book discusses the chance for a electrical defibrillator. We are presently at a very preliminary stage of development even though a vagal nerve stimulator has been found effective in certain refractory cases of uncontrolled seizures. This book firmly places Epilepsy as a dynamic illness with chaotic, often unpredictable characteristics and sets in motion ideas for a cortical integrated defibrillatory device.Let's hope we innovate and obtain one soon for clinical trials. ... Product Description
Epilepsy is neither an illness nor a disease, but a brain disorder, frequently associated with neurological and psychosocial difficulties. It is not a purely 'neurological phenomenon' and it requires a juxtaposition of both the neurological and sociological components to elucidate the 'unexplored' dimensions of this disorder. Although clinical, neurological, biological, psychiatric and even therapeutic aspects of epilepsy have been fairly consistently reviewed, relatively little is known about psychosocial aspects of this condition. Social research into epilepsy has been a 'shadow-dweller' for too long and a publication on these lines is long overdue. This book fills a gap in the literature in social context of epilepsy. The main objective of this book is to advance our understanding of social aspects of epilepsy; to encourage further research that draws on reported studies in epilepsy; to introduce the targeted audiences to applied social research into epilepsy; and, to illustrate the benefits of such research for health policy change & practice. This book demonstrates the significance of social aspects of epilepsy by presenting a series of articles on topics that have not largely been discussed in 'neurological circles'. Thematically, this volume focuses on 'psychosocial' context of epilepsy with particular emphasis on 'social' context of the disorder. ... Read more
