5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
As someone who has had fibromyalgia for 14 years, I can honestly say that this book has been quite helpful. It is a good resource to have on hand.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great for newly diagnosed.
This is another book that would be great for the newly diagnosed. Along with the workbook this is a wonderful aid to help your spouse, other family members, and close friends who are interested in learning what the FMS patient is going through and want to offer their help and support.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended!
This is an excellent resource! It shipped in the condition listed and was shipped quickly.Thank you!

5-0 out of 5 stars Help yourself with fibromyalgia
I have had fibromyalgia for several years, but only received my diagnosis about 14 months ago. I initially purchased "Fibromyalgia for Dummies" and "Idiots Guide to Fibromyalgia" for basic help and information. I found both of those a little too simplified for my needs. I then purchased this book, along with its companion workbook.

This book is an excellent resource with reliable information. It provides you with information and tools to make treatment and lifestyle choices that work for YOU. Medications and alternative treatments are covered briefly, but with enough information to get you started in the right direction. Just about every topic of living that is impacted by fibromyalgia is covered with things you can try to feel better. There are short occasional real-life fibromyalgia stories for inspiration, and to let you know you are not alone. Excellent techniques, suggestions, exercises, and help in general throughout. This book will not help you file for disabilty. (And fibromyalgia CAN be totally disabling for many). What it does do is guide you with proven advice, suggestions, and techniques to implement in your life, as you are able, to improve your quality of life.

I certainly have not followed every suggestion, and I am far from pain and fatigue-free from reading this book, but it has improved aspects of my life and provided me with useful information. Whenever I have a flare, I turn to this book to remind me I will feel better on some days, there are simple things I can do to feel a little better and more in control, and most of all, I am not alone. I recommend it as a trustworthy guide to improving your quality of life tiny bit by tiny bit.

I would also recommend "Natural Treatments for Fibromyalgia" by the Arthritis Foundation for reliable information on many prescription medication alternatives.

2-0 out of 5 stars Same Old Rehashed "Advice"
If you are really brand spankin' new to FMS, you may learn something here. Otherwise look elsewhere. Something that really bugged me about this book, is that it didn't once mention anything about work and keeping a job. My FMS is so severe I cannot work and am seeking disability. I've tried everything I can possibly try also - from supplements to drugs, exercise to physical therapy, etc. The book is a big failure for not even mentioning disability. It also rehashes that tired old advice of "exercise and you'll feel better." Junk advice. Telling us the pain we feel is good pain and to fight through it. Yeah right. Some of us actually do have muscular damage from FMS and the fact that we miss out on micro-muscle repair that should be had through stage 4 sleep does indicate that we can acquire damage to our muscles. This book reads like it was written 1998 - 2000 and not updated properly to reflect new evidence and studies that have been conducted (save for mentioning of substance P and IGF-1). The book is more of a "get yourself feelin' happy" workbook. Useless for us severely impacted individuals who've already been through the medical system and back out. Its recommendation of following the food pyramid is absurd especially for those with co-morbid candidiasis (yeast and mold) problems. A book I highly recommend is "Taking Charge of Fibromyalgia: Everything You Need to Know to Manage Fibromyalgia, Fifth Edition" The only reason I give it 2 stars was for the easy to read layout of the book and the pictoral depictions of some stretches. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Best book on AT
Though putatively angled at fibromyalgia-sufferers, this is far-and-away the best instructional guide to AT. The practical bit actually covers eighty of its 219 pages, with a further, somewhat (by necessity) sketchier treatment of 'advanced' training (viz. 'autogenic meditation'). Many other books on this topic are obsessed with AT's being learnable only under the guidance of a (medically) qualified trainer, and deploy that as an excuse to be vague about technique, to the point of uselessness. That is nonsense. This text's special merit lies in its careful clarification of 'passive concentration', pointing out that one does employ visual (or other) imagination whilst repeating the formulae. The only other decent, practical guide, Kermani's, was, for me, confusing on this score.

Unfortunately the book appears to be very expensive now. Nonetheless, this is the one. And, to repeat, don't be put off by the book's appearing to be specifically targeted at fibromyalgics. It doesn't matter.

5-0 out of 5 stars An indispensable guide to relaxation training.
Although the term "autogenic training" may sound intimidating, it is really just a very effective relaxation technique.Developed by the German psychiatrist Johannes Schultz in the early 1930s, it was a forerunner of the fascination with the "mind/body" connection that emerged in the 1970s.And like so many of us in the 70s (those of us who were alive back then!), Schultz himself was fascinated with yoga and meditation, incorporating many of their principles into his technique.

Autogenic training has been taught and used extensively in Europe and Japan since its inception, but oddly never received much attention in the United States. However, clinical studies of its effectiveness were carried out in Germany from the beginning, and since the 1980s studies have been published in Japan and throughout Europe. It has been shown to calm the nervous system in a manner similar to deep meditation, and thus helps relieve physical and emotional complaints stemming from stress and anxiety. It has also been shown to help strengthen the immune system.

Dr. Sadigh has written this book for both the lay reader and practicing clinicians. As a lay reader, I am not in a position to evaluate the scientific rigor of the many studies he cites throughout the book. However, I was able to teach myself the technique using this book as a self-study guide. Moreover, I appreciate an author who provides citations, as I've seen many holistic health books that make bold claims without providing any evidence from clinical studies.

Parts I and II seem to be directed more toward professional clinicians. In Part I, "Theoretical Aspects of Chronic Pain and Stress," he outlines recent studies of fibromyalgia, depression, anxiety and other mind/body conditions, and shows how other relaxation therapies compare to autogenic training in their effectiveness. In Part II, "History and Principles of Autogenic Training," he discusses how the technique was developed and how to optimize its practice. These first two parts may be a bit dry for the lay reader, since he very carefully cites numerous studies and gives evidence for his findings. However, I found that reading over the material did give me important background information that helped me understand how to do the exercises.

In Part III, "Training, Biofeedback and Treatment of Insomnia," he lays out the steps for practice, which are very clear and easy to follow.Starting with preliminary exercises, you progress gradually, mastering one step at a time before adding on another. After learning the basic practice, you can go on to advanced techniques, some of which use visualization, and all of which deepen the meditative experience. Finally, there is an entire chapter on insomnia and pain, which I found very helpful, having been plagued by insomnia from a very early age.

This book is well-organized, clearly written, and, despite its rather dry tone, I found it inspirational. It enabled me to influence my physical responses to stress, thus empowering me to improve my health and my state of mind.Although I am grateful for modern medications and have benefited from them, I always prefer to use the power of my mind to help myself. This book teaches how to do that.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good step by step guide
The title of the book tells us what we are getting. "Autogenic Training: A Mind-Body Approach to the Treatment of Fibromyalgia and Chronic Pain Syndrome." was written as a reference resource and training manual for practitioners. The first 1/4 of the book consists of a review of research studies on fibromyalgia, stress and pain. A later chapter also covers insomnia and how it is typically found in patients who suffer from chronic pain and fibromyalgia. As a psychotherapist and someone who experiences chronic pain I find this book a very useful resource.

That's not to say that others wouldn't appreciate the book, too. The chapters that cover the specifics of Autogenic Training are excellent. They are very thorough and provide a clear andmodern introduction to the practice. There is a much shorter chapter that provides an introduction to advanced Autogenic Training methods. It is generally focused on the use of techniques, "formulas" that are useful in the treatment of insomnia and chronic pain. Each of the six steps or standard exercises gets its own chapter with a listing of benefits, cautions and a short case study along with thorough instructions. There is also a short section of general instructions for people who suffer from insomnia.

As you might expect of a book targeted towards clinicians, the writing is academic in style, though not to the point of being unreadably dry.Of use to anybody interested in systematic training and documenting the benefits of Autogenics are the Autogenic Pain and Tension Checklists, include in an Appendix. The book is adequately indexed and referenced.

It's nice to see a modern, research based coverage of Autogenic Training. The basic Autogenic Training formulas are well covered, and the research is up-to-date as of 2000. I would love to see a second book from the author that addresses the broader scope of Autogenics, as the original texts on the subject are out of print and expensive, as well as containing research that is 50 or more years old.

2-0 out of 5 stars autogenic training
If you are unable to get a grip to Autogenic Therapy by J. H. Schultz and Wolfgang Luthe (the original six books), you have to read Micah's book. But, remember: Schultz and Wolfgang Luthe are the masters. Their books were published between 1930 and 1973.I read those and are fresh and full of insights. Why copy the copy when you can go to source. If you are really interested in the subject, the book to acquire is the original Autogenic Training published in 1959 byJ.H. Schultz and Wolfgang Luthe. Always, go to the source.

5-0 out of 5 stars A SCIENTIFIC WORK WITH IMMEDIATE CLINICAL APPLICATIONS.
This book will be a "classic" for both professionals and patients alike.Dr.Sadigh masterfully weaves through the literature on Fibromyalgia, Stress & Pain, and Autogenic Training setting up "Part III", a tour de force on "Training, Biofeedback, and Treatment of Insomnia"

He walksyou through a six step sequence of Autogenic Training Exercises as if you were sitting in his office. The chapters are clear, concise and have immediate clinical applications.Of particular interest and help are the "Case Examples" and "Common Difficulties" sections which follow each Autogenic Exercise sequence. These sections as well as the "Questions & Answers" chapter assist the clinician or patient as if the Doctor himself were right there answering your very questions.

This book is a landmark compilation crossing many boundaries that will be a mainstay on the book shelves of professionals and patients for years to come.

I only hope that Dr. Sadigh will follow this book with a CD or Tape Set consisting of the Autogenic Training Exercises that he so expertly presented in this book.Having a tape or CD to practice the exercises would truely give people suffering from Fibromyalgia, Chronic Pain, and Stress & Cognitive Anxiety the opportunity to derive ongoing benefit from the information presented in this masterful book.

Thank you for you magnificent contribution in helping sufferers worldwide! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm ME again!
I had Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.
On May 20th, 2006, I found the Mickel Therapy website and read it.
Then I ordered this book and read it.
I began applying the Mickel Therapy process to the best of my understanding and seeing improvements in my health.

June 13th I had my first session with a Mickel Therapist.

October 2006, I am well and have not had any symptoms for a month.
I have just ordered five copies of this book for friends who have CFS/ME, FM, IBS, Depression or Anxiety.

The book doesn't appear to have been proofread but I found the content brilliant and believe that it contains the keys to open the doors to excellent health for most everyone, not just CFS sufferers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
This book is a must read for those who suffer from these chronic conditions, as well as for those with an interest in health more generally.

As I understand it, the book is designed to be read by those suffering from the conditions of Chronic Fatigue, Post Viral Fatigue, ME and Fibromyalgia. It is brief because many sufferers have problems with concentration and memory.Dr Mickel is trying to convey complex information in a simple manner and I believe he is successful in this venture.

I, unlike the first reviewer, know a number of people who have been successfully treated by Dr Mickel and his colleagues. His claims are far from ludicrous.Increasing numbers of professionals concur with the role of the hypothalamus in these conditions and the approach Dr Mickel takes of treating the cause of the problems rather than just the effect or symptoms seems eminently sensible!.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
This book is expensive - about 70 pages for $16.
It is poorly written and some of the claims made
by Dr Mickel are frankly ludicrous - for example
- that he had 'a 100% success' rate curing his
clients.

He says Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is caused by
disturbances in the energy of the cells but
doesn't give any proof or explain how.

Nor does the book say much about how the 'cure'
actually works - so that people have to pay to
come and find out?

5-0 out of 5 stars There is hope!
This is highly recommended for anyone suffering from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, ME or Fibromyalgia. Dr Mickel explains the theory behind Mickel Reverse Therapy, an exciting new treatment for these conditions. It is relatively short and easy to understand, which is crucial for sufferers who are unable to concentrate for long periods of time. Nevertheless, it serves to introduce the reader to the key concepts behind the treatment. For anyone suffering from these conditions and considering undertaking Mickel Reverse Therapy, reading this book will help answer many questions and will serve as a first step to a cure. There is hope! ... Read more

Product Description

An essential survival guide for parents whose children suffer with persistent and often debilitating pain

Approximately ten million children are living with chronic pain. Most people would be surprised at such numbers, but for the parents of these children, the challenge of helping a pain-stricken child live a normal life is a frightening and frustrating reality. Chronic pain in children can manifest as abdominal, migraine, or facial pain. It also stems from a wide variety of disorders such as juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, cystic fibrosis, hemophilia, and childhood cancers. No matter what type of chronic pain the child suffers with, a parent must be armed with an understanding of how a child's expression and experience of pain differs from an adult's.

Trained in pediatric anesthesia and intensive care at Boston Children's Hospital, Dr. Elliot Krane has devoted his entire professional life to refining and innovating techniques, strategies, and therapies to relieve the suffering of children with pain. In his book, Relieve Your Child's Chronic Pain, parents will find the information and tools they need to get the very best care for their child. It will help you:

  • Recognize, measure, and evaluate your child's pain properly

  • Learn about the many alternative pain-management approaches that can be used at home

  • Dispel fears about addiction if your child is prescribed a narcotic

  • Find an appropriate pain-management clinic for your child

  • Reduce the stress and anxiety in the home in a way that benefits the entire family

You may not always be able to eliminate chronic pain entirely, but you can succeed in minimizing your child's suffering. ... Read more

Product Description
For the more than 43 million sufferers of arthritis and similar afflictions, a safe, effective, natural method for reversing such diseases without drugs or potentially harmful side effects.

When veteran health writer Ellen Hodgson Brown found herself suffering from an arthritic hip so painful that sleep was almost impossible, she did not surrender to painkillers or replacement surgery.Instead, she undertook extensive investigation into natural remedies and schools of alternative medicine and devised an eclectic home protocol of fasting and nutritional healing. The result: the arthritis disappeared completely, leaving her feeling better than she had in years.

In Healing Joint Pain Naturally, Brown shares what she's learned in her journey to renewed wellness, in the process proving that the course of arthritis can be reversed. She first investigates the causes of joint disease, examining the roles of stress, poor nutrition, and energy blockage. She then covers the therapeutic possibilities of altered diet and detoxification; supplementation therapies of natural substances that offer safer pain relief without long-term side effects and that promote healing; and regulation therapies, ranging from exercise, massage, and chiropractic to chelation, homeopathy, and acupuncture. Her belief throughout is that healing is a natural process that can be promoted more by respecting the wisdom of the body than by waging war.Inspiring, wide-ranging, eclectic, Healing Joint Pain Naturally brings a message of hope and bodily renewal to millions who have resigned themselves to a life of pain.

The author is not a medical practitioner, but she does share with the reader her own experiences with the various natural approaches to alleviating joint pain. The book helped me realize I'd have to be responsible for my healing and figure out what works for me and what doesn't. I think it's important to check with the experts regarding medical advice, but I found her information a good source of ideas worth researching further.

My wrist pain was initially misdiagnosed as rheumatoid arthritis (due to a mix up with the blood work), which is why I picked up this book. Although we eventually discovered the mistake the physician had made and I was correctly diagnosed with carpal tunnel syndrome, I still found the information in this book helpful. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Incomprehensible...
There is a wealth of information in this book, which I am sure would be useful if only we could understand it. Duncan's approach to writing seems to be "everything and the kitchen sink." Case studies, patient quotes, observations, "surmises", treatments, and charts are all thrown together willy-nilly. It was a real chore to wade through the chaos. From what I could gather, Bruce Duncan is proposing to treat ME/CFS with a combination of food elimination diets, detox programs, avoidance of toxins and allergens, allergy desensitization, and viral (and protozoal) desensitization through provocation/neutralization.

On the whole, there isn't anything new in this approach. Detox programs, avoidance, elimination diets, and provocation/neutralization are all standard "alternative" fare. What intrigued me was the use of provocation/neutralization techniques for latent viruses. Can you really treat viral reactivation of HHV6, EBV, etc. with sublingual drops? Unfortunately, Duncan's "explanation" raised more questions than he answered. (How can you treat someone with "latency" to dengue fever if they have never had it?) Although I found the concept of treating latent infections as if they were allergies interesting, I regret to say that after finishing this book I was as unenlightened as when I started it.

3-0 out of 5 stars good suggestions
this book is full of suggestions to help with the pains and symptoms of fibro - I found it very helpful

3-0 out of 5 stars Maybe a little too basic
Many FM patients (usually those with a more mild form) have found that they can manage their FM through the use of supplements. Elrod gives a lot of good suggestions, but not a lot of information on how the different supplements can help. This is a good resource book, but should be used in light of a doctor's care and current research.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worthwhile addition to the body of knowledge!!
I have suffered with fibromyalgia and chronic fatique syndrome since 1992.When I was diagnosed there was virtually no information available!Thankfully there are some caring souls out there who have lent their expertise to this condition that is looked down on by so many professionals. As a stand-alone this pamphlet gives a fair background to the condition in addition to the invaluable information regarding the supplements but its strength lies in its addition to the cummulative body of information that is being built.Another reviewer mentioned that one would have to take pills all day in order to use all the suggested supplements..... from my reading of the pamphlet that was never intended! These are suggestions and each individual needs to find the right balance of supplements and in the quantity that works for that individual. If you are suffering from this condition my thoughts and prayers are with you!Don't give up and don't let people tell you this is all in your head!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Panning of Supplements for Fibromyalgia
I rated this as a "1" based on my level of knowledge. For a neophyte, perhaps it could be rated as high as a "2".There aren't many supplements which Elrod didn't include in this review...EVERY supplement is important to him (and I don't disagree). However, one would have to take pills ALL DAY to get all his recommendations ingested. He doesn't give any ideas of relative importance, nor does he suggest any amount which might be necessary for each supplement. Not very helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
This pamphlet is a quick and easy to read and it provides you with good information to know on this subject. ... Read more

There has been a great lack of public information on this common debilitating condition, but this book should go a long way toward educating people. Theresa Foy DiGeronimo gives us a sensitive and comprehensive book that will be of tremendous value to people with fibromyalgia."

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Book To Help You Figure Out Why You Are So Tired
I have read many books on health, and have never read one so well put together. Dr. Murphree realizes that one treatment is not the answer for everyone. He explains how to get off the tired treadmill one step at a time, and how to add to add additional steps to tailor treatment to your special situation. I was happy to be able to purchase the exact vitamins and formulas that Dr. Murphree suggested in the book from his office. Everyone was so kind and helpful, and I didn't have to scramble around trying to find them from a questionable source. As a extremely sensitive person, I have had only wonderful results from this program. I would suggest reading this book to anyone who has not been able to get their life back on track.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good and Not so Good...
I enjoyed this book. The author seems extremely knowledgeable on FMS and I learned a lot about it... however - as the book progressed it became more of a sales pitch for his vitamin plan.

5-0 out of 5 stars Compassionate and Straightforward
This book is very easy to read for those who are in much pain or exhausted as it is often the case with CFS\CFIDS\FM.
It is not at all complex and offers a reasonable theory behind the causes of CFS\CFIDS\FM, and explains (with many scientific references) why conventional anti-depression and other drugs can do much more harm.
It is very helpful as it include Q&A-style text boxes with exactly the questions you'd want to ask. It promotes certain supplements which I found to be very helpful. Be sure to include Rhodiola, Licorice Root, Garlic and Oregano Oil as well. Construct your diet around Low-GL as well as anti-inflammatory food choices. Research is rewarding in the end.

Product Description
This book is the first of its kind to directly connect the causes of autoimmune disorders, allergies, inflammatory diseases, and multiple chemical sensitivities with colon and digestive disorders. It offers safe, alternative, natural choices to drug therapy.

A personal note from Dr. Gilbère:

Dear Reader,
My book will assist you in natural non-drug solutions to heal and repair damage from prescription drugs, years of health depleting dietary choices, and chemically induced immune system disorders. It’s surprising how many symptoms stem from leaky gut and toxic liver syndromes. No, leaky gut is not a dinner table topic, but will soon become a household word. This increasingly common disorder is not well known in traditional medicine, rarely tested for, and much less understood. Leaky gut syndrome is the disease of the 21st century. The gut houses over half the body's immune and detoxification system, therefore, an unhealthy gut is what holds back many people from ever getting well. It doesn’t matter what your diagnostic label is, if your gut isn’t healthy, your body cannot repair. This syndrome will soon be as widely discussed and written about as colon cancer, menopause, prostate disorders and arthritis.
—Dr. Gloria Gilbère, June 1, 2000

Take charge of your health... get to the gut causes... read this book! "We have become a society that expects instant results instead of taking full responsibility for our health. Doctors and health-care professionals are physicians, not magicians. The information provided in this book will assist you in making informed decisions, because, after all, it’s you who must live with the consequences of your choices." ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Introduces a new way of thinking and living
I read (and reread) this book after beginning reverse therapy. While I am finding the therapy very important, reading the book has given me a great foundation for understanding the process, and provides reminders and support between sessions. Applying the principles described in the book is life-changing, and not just for people who have CFS. Anyone wanting a healthier and happier life can benefit from the mindset and strategies described here.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful, but not magic
I read the book a year ago, and I've been going to Reverse Therapy sessions for about 6 months.I'm about 10 percent better, and I will persevere as that's more benefit than I've gotten from anything else.I would recommend it to anyone who is thinking about trying Reverse Therapy, and I would recommend it to anyone with CFS to have as a tool.Reading it in conjunction with John Sarno and Freedom From Fibromyalgia (Selfridge and Peterson) will help.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well worth the read
Whether you go ahead and work with a therapist using this approach or not, just the reading alone can be enormously helpful. It was for me.I think with this view I am finally getting to the root of why the CFS took hold and what causes the various symptoms, and this education/perspective is helping me get going so the symptoms can loosen their grip, not only for CFS but for other sub-optimal reactions my body has developed over the years that lessen a full experience of life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Life-Changing
In a word, this book was life-changing.I thought I was recovered from CFS, but I have made great strides since reading, and internalizing, the smart tenets of this book. It's a quick read, and Dr. John Eaton makes all the concepts simple and easy to understand. A must-read.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book ever written on CFS/M.E.
I suffered from CFS for 13 years, but now I am recovered. Reading Dr. Eaton`s book gave me very valuable and vital clues about the process of recovery. The book is almost sufficient to treat the condition by yourself and I would recommend it to anyone suffering with CFS/M.E. or fibromyalgia. It gives a detailed overview of Reverse Therapy and how it developed from earlier theories of eminent psychologists and therapists. In addition to giving a good theoretical basis for understanding RT, this book gives a lot of practical information as well. The book gives you a good understanding of Reverse Therapy, but is a bit lacking in instructions on how to treat the condition by yourself. But I assure you: you can get well with the help of this book. I used some additional sources to learn about the process, but I would say that if you read this book, you only need a bit of outside support to get well. Which is not to say that the therapy is useless, ofcourse. If you have a chance, attend the sessions, but by all means, read the book first!
This book is THE BEST book ever written on CFS! Dr. Eaton has done a wonderful job. Thank you for your invaluable work!
