5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, a single reference that addresses a multitude of natural toxins!
This is an essential reference text for medical libraries, poison and drug information centers, clinical toxicologists and anyone who manages patients who may be exposed to natural toxins. With the increasing use of alternative medicine, this book would be a useful addition to medical practice libraries and emergency departments. The author is Donald Barceloux, MD, the co-author of Medical Toxicology, which is still a staple reference in the discipline of clinical toxicology.Dr. Barceloux combines his expertise in medical toxicology and emergency medicine and his skills as an author to address the significant and challenging natural toxins that are associated with morbidity and mortality. The book is divided into five sections: foodborne and microbial toxins, fungal toxins (mushrooms), medicinal herbs and essential oils, toxic plants and venomous animals (even marine poisons). Each monograph follows a template that is consistent throughout the book and makes it easy to navigate from section to section.Strengths of the book include placing each toxin in perspective with regard to potential morbidity and mortality, focused but comprehensive monographs, and extensive referencing. After using the book for a few weeks, I noted only one minor weakness--a number of terms are missing from the index. For example, a minimal number of terms such as poinsettia, philodendron, Araceae are missing. Thus, it took slightly longer to locate the information about those plants. While all of the information included in the book can be found in a multitude of hardcopy references and online resources, this is the only book that combines everything into a single, authoritative, contemporary and easy to read reference. ... Product Description

What sex is to inter-personal relationships, eating is to the Human-Environment relationship, a daily consummation of our de facto marriage to the living biosphere.

This book is about the true meaning of eating, intimacy, love, vomiting and diarrhea: You and your food partner. It is about the celebration of ecology through eating and about how food poisoning can save the world.

This book should be kept next to your toilet, and also next to your refrigerator. The next time you suffer from a bout of food poisoning, doubled over in abdominal pain, feeling like there rages a true revolution within, I want you to understand what is happening to you, why the inner child is having a gaseous tantrum in your guts.I want you to hearGaia's, the earth organism's, whispered love-message to you.

Product Description
Tainted peanuts, deadly hamburgers, recalled tomatoes. Every year new problems erupt with the safety of the foods we eat and water we drink. Widespread recalls occur when food becomes infected by bacteria and viruses. Water supplies are turned off when parasites are detected. As USA TODAY, the Nation's No. 1 Newspaper noted, "The increasing reports of illness, many of them caused by food-borne bugs, are in part a result of global food distribution, which allows unusual microbes to ride into the USA on fresh produce, and of better technology, which allows doctors to identify disease-causing organisms."Most people who eat or drink contaminated food or water end up with uncomfortable symptoms, such as diarrhea or vomiting. But sometimes, particularly in young and old people, the microbes can cause lifetime problems and even death. In this book, you'll read case studies involving many of the diseases that can be caused by ingesting unsafe foods. You'll also find out what happens when a problem is detected, how government agencies attempt to inspect and protect our food supplies, and what we can do to carefully prepare and handle foods to keep ourselves safe. ... Product Description
“The text is well written and amply interspaced with tables so that it is very informative and not too heavy to read, which is an almost unique combination in scientific books!” –International Poultry Production, Volume 18, Number 1, and International Food Hygiene, Volume 20, Number 7

The records of human gastrointestinal illness gathered by national and international bodies concerned with matters relating to public health clearly demonstrate that Campylobacter spp. are the most frequently identified bacteria causing infectious intestinal disease. This new book provides up to date information about the species of Campylobacter most often associated with food poisoning, namely C. jejuni and C. coli.

Like Salmonella spp., Campylobacter spp. are zoonotic agents. Many different domestic and wild animal, avian, and also insect reservoirs of these organisms have been identified. They are also widespread in the environment and have been found to survive in both soil and natural waters.

Part of the authors’ Practical Food Microbiology Series, which includes books covering Listeria monocytogenes, E. coli, Clostridium botulinum and Salmonella spp., this book again offers a practical treatment of Campylobacter spp., drawing on real-life cases to highlight effective means of controlling these pathogenic microorganisms in foods.

Each volume in the series has been devised to provide practical and accurate information about specific microorganisms of concern to public health. This new book includes information concerning the taxonomy of Campylobacter spp. and methods used for their isolation and characterisation, the illnesses caused by them, the occurrences of outbreaks of illness and their investigation, and the lessons that can be learnt from these.  Also discussed are the sources of these organisms, routes by which they may contaminate foods, factors affecting their survival and growth and, importantly, means for the control of Campylobacter spp. and their subsequent impact on public health.

The information in this book is designed for use by those in the food industry working in manufacturing, retailing and quality assurance and those in associated professional sectors, e.g. health, and students in each of these areas. This book is an invaluable tool and essential reference for all food microbiologists. ... Read more
