5-0 out of 5 stars Great refenerce
This is an excellent reference to rapidly give you the plan of treatment for any fracture in a table form as well as a longer written discussion. It states when orto MD must be seen and when. Perfect as a ready reference!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fracture Management for Primary Care 2nd ed.
Great photos of fractures plus this manual gives a description of how to treat - what the best type of casts or splints would be and what they look like as well.Excellent resource!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Reference Book
Very easy to use, concise advice on the most common fractures. Not a definitive ortho text, but does exactly what the title indicates.Worth the price for anyone in primary care or urgent care environments.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Book!
Again, this is an essential book, especially for the Family Practitioner just starting out. I have just graduated residency and am working alone at an Urgent Care Center, and I use this book almost every shift! Gives good, clear advice for managing the most common fractures encountered, and when (and more importantly, how quickly) to refer to ortho! Love It, worth every penny!

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid, conservative help
I am a family doctor with a number of years in a semi-rural practice and more than my share of ER time.Fracture Management is a good, solid, conservative reference for it's intended audience. It will certainly keep you out of trouble.Due to it's brevity, there are a number of conditions that are missing, mostly less common problems, but sometimes the book does not cover the particular variant of the fracture you are seeing.Dislocations are largely not included. The photographs of x-rays are helpful when they are present, and I often show the patient the picture in the book as it often illustrates their fracture better than our sometimes crummy x-ray.Unfortunately, not all the photos clearly demonstrate what they aim to.
For a more comprehensive, and much larger, text on fractures, with some additional attention to mechanisms of injury and very helpful sketches, I recommend Connolly's Fractures and Dislocations: Closed Management.Though it is getting pretty old in its current edition, the basics of how people get hurt and how to manage them non-operatively, haven't changed all that much.
For a more broad based text on orthopedic care, with only brief attention to fractures, it's hard to go wrong with Essentials of Musculoskeletal Care. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Concise and Conclusive
Handy book that be with you all the time containing everything you need in nearly everything needed in trauma orthopedics.
Good book

5-0 out of 5 stars Must have trauma pocket book
I am currently working at a busy level 1 trauma center and constantly use this book for major aspects in orthopedic trauma management. The book is summarizes high yield point in adult and pediatric orthopedic traumatology in a concise yet complete manner.

2-0 out of 5 stars Mediocre
Many important topics in this book are presented
not in a cutting edge manner and the stuff can
easily be found in all standard text;
Newest topics in trauma like minimal invasive
surgery, computer aided surgery, new AO thinking
that everyone doing trauma is talking about these days
not covered or grossly inadequate
I have 2 juniors who used to work with one of the authors,
they told me there is a great discrepancy between
what that author claims he would do in his
little text, as compared to his actual practice
in real life. I hope this is not the case, but
if it is, readers will not be pleased

Mediocre work at most

1-0 out of 5 stars well below expectations
This book in many areas are too dogmatic with lack of explanation
Important key topics like new plating systems, ilizarov,
newer EF, CAOS, periprosthetic # have either been not discussed or done too inadequately
May be good only for medical students

5-0 out of 5 stars También para un radiólogo.....
... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good orthopaedic review
A great book for young residents. Very good for getting your basic orthopaedic knowlegde. The book is based upon easy and comprehensive drawings. The drawings make it very easy to read and gives a quick understandment of general treatment guidelines.

The books downsides are some of old remnants in the femur-fracture-treatments and that it's not as indepth as one needs at a later stage. Many of the internal fixation techniques described can be a little too indepth without any real theoretical knowledge. At our hospital we usually use different procedures from the ones described in the book making the descriptions a little useless since McRae doesn't pinpoint which principles are important in each procedure and how to avoid common errors.

5-0 out of 5 stars Clear, comprehensive guide for Emergency doctors
This excellent textbooksystematically deals with the mechanisms of injury, symptoms, signs, treatment and complications of all common Orthopaedic injuries. In addition to X-rays,the author has alsoillustrated his book with superb line drawings. Book Description
With its combination of practicality, readability, and rigor that is characteristic of any truly authoritative reference and text, Fracture Mechanics: Fundamentals and Applications quickly established itself as the most comprehensive guide to fracture mechanics available. It has been adopted by more than 100 universities and embraced by thousands of professional engineers worldwide. Now in its third edition, the book continues to raise the bar in both scope and coverage. It encompasses theory and applications, linear and nonlinear fracture mechanics, solid mechanics, and materials science with a unified, balanced, and in-depth approach.Reflecting the many advances made in the decade since the previous edition came about, this indispensable Third Edition now includes:· A new chapter on environmental cracking · Expanded coverage of weight functions · New material on toughness test methods · New problems at the end of the book · New material on the failure assessment diagram (FAD) method · Expanded and updated coverage of crack closure and variable-amplitude fatigue · Updated solutions manualIn addition to these enhancements, Fracture Mechanics: Fundamentals and Applications, Third Edition also includes detailed mathematical derivations in appendices at the end of applicable chapters; recent developments in laboratory testing, application to structures, and computational methods; coverage of micromechanisms of fracture; and more than 400 illustrations. 3-0 out of 5 stars Lots of room for improvement
Two specific things about this book keep me from rating it higher:

1- The book has a lot of errors. For instance, the polynomial equations for the stress concentration factors (K_I) in chapter 2 are labeled incorrectly. The diagrams for Center Cracked Tension and Double Edge Notched Tension are reversed. There are also other errors, but to list them all here would be pointless.

2- The problem set is close to worthless.Of the 600 page book, there are 18 pages of problems, or less than 100 total problems. The problems are not even that difficult. The "derivations" in the problem sets hardly require more than 2-3 lines of work, and very little deep thought. In other words, the problems are superficial.

Because of the lack of good problems and the errors (in fact, one of the problems seems to have an error in the difference between compliance and stiffness), I wouldn't feel comfortable using this book as a reference. No doubt, it does provide an excellent introduction or overview of fracture mechanics in general, but I would not feel comfortable with this book as my main source of information. There are also few examples with solutions to motivate learning.A good teacher is necessary to go beyond the basics of this text.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good book for mechanical engineering, I recomnend it to my students
This book covers most of the fundamental topics in fracture mechanics. I recommend it to my undergraduate students. It is very easy to understand. This book is a fundamental source in fracture mechanics. It is a classic book recommended by numerous bibliographies regarding this field of study.

3-0 out of 5 stars Broad overview with not much rigor
This book covers most of the fundamental topics in fracture mechanics. However, it lacks derivations of the equations, and the illustrations are a very crude. This book is probably appropriate for undergraduate level work, but not for graduate level.

5-0 out of 5 stars a must book for mechanical engineers
This book is a must for mechanical engineers who work in the field of fracture mechanics. It covers the subjects entirely. It is very easy to understand. this book is a fundamental source in fracture mechanics

4-0 out of 5 stars a great book for mechanical engineering students

3-0 out of 5 stars Overall not a bad book, but not close to being good
Many of the explanations used in the book were well written but a bit hard to understand.Equations jump out of nowhere without any elaboration and the problems asked at the end come with no supplement or explanation in the chapter to help you out.I mostly had to look up the subjects on wikipedia to really get a better understanding of much of the material.Although I acknowledge this to be a book for an upper division class, so I'm not too disappointed overall with it, seeing as how I've already taken the introductory course to material sciences and it was my fault for really forgetting the minor details needed to fully comprehend the subject.

4-0 out of 5 stars Strong on Fracture, weaker on Deformation details
I bought this book for a one-credit course at Virginia Tech and hardlyever used it.That, I believe, chiefly reflects excellent teachingmethodology and not insufficiency of this book.

Back in Switzerland, Itook a big, long course in deformation and fracture mechanics at the SwissFederal Institute of Technology in Lausanne, and all of a sudden this bookcame in handy for extra illustrations and alternative explanations.Whileit is particularly excellent when treating fracture and devotes much spaceto this subject, deformation mechanics are often simplified or containomissions in the derivation.Unfortunately, my course went into furtherdetail than Dr. Hertzberg's book, so for the interesting details ondeformation (e.g. a good explanation of the Lüders Bands) I must searchelsewhere.

However, readers will appreciate the last chapter of casestudies, which is instructive and sometimes even humorous (though it mightrequire black humor to find a bursting tank of molasses funny).

Inshort, if you're into things that break, this book will make you happy.Ifyou want to know what happens before, this book will help, but won't by anymeans be exhaustive. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Principles of Fracture Mechanics
"Principles of Fracture Mechanics" is the most concise yet complete survey on the equations and history of fracture mechanics I have found.Professor Sanford does an excellent job explaining how complex analysis is used to derive many of the equations governing the fracture of metals, without bogging the reader down in the mathematical details.I found the book to be enlightening. After reading it, I also found myself wishing I could have taken a course in fracture mechanics from Professor Sanford when I was in college.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Teacher
Alright, I've haven't read the final book. I do have an unfinished version that Professor Sanford distributed when I took this class from him at the U of Maryland. The initial version was excellent. I had tried to slog through other presentations on fracture mechanics and had gotten lost in the details.

Rather than just presenting the stress intensity factor and other concepts, he gave a good historical development of just where these quantities came from and why anyone would or should use them to predict time to failure. ... Read more

Book Description
Written by leading orthopaedists and rehabilitation specialists, this volume presents sequential treatment and rehabilitation plans for fractures of the upper extremity, lower extremity, and spine. The book shows how to treat each fracture--from both an orthopaedic and a rehabilitation standpoint--at each stage of healing. Introductory chapters review the fundamentals of fracture management--bone healing, treatment modalities, biomechanics, assistive devices and adaptive equipment, gait, splints and braces, therapeutic exercise and range of motion, and determining when a fracture is healed. Subsequent chapters focus on management of individual fractures. Each chapter on an individual fracture is organized by weekly postfracture time zones, from the day of injury through twelve weeks. For each time zone, the text discusses bone healing, physical examination, dangers, x-rays, weight bearing, range of motion, strength, functional activities, and gait/ambulation. Specific treatment strategies and rehabilitation protocols are then presented. More than 500 illustrations complement the text. ... Read more

Most orthopaedic surgeons are aware of Hoppenfeld's Anatomical Exposures text...this is the other one, which is just as important and helpful for the general or specialist orthopod. For residents who often are in a quandary regarding routine followup and rehabilitation goals with regards to patients, this paperback proves invaluable. Chief residents who often run clinics will find this as an excellent tool for evaluating the progress of their patients postop. Another excellent text with self explanatory illustrations and photographs.

Book Description
"Hudson is one of the tiny handful of economic thinkers in today's world who are forcing us to look at old questions in startling new ways". Alvin Toffler, best-selling author of Future Shock and The Third Wave

This new and updated edition of Michael Hudson's classic political economy text explores how and why the US came to achieve world economic hegemony.

Originally published as the sequel to Hudson's bestselling Super Imperialism, Global Fracture explores American economic strategy during a key period in world history.

In 1973, many of the world's most indebted countries sought to free themselves of trade dependency and the debt trap by creating a New International Economic Order (NIEO). This aimed to improve the terms of trade for raw materials and build up agicultural and industrial self-sufficiency.

Global Fracture shows how the US undermined this progressive initiative and instead pushed for financial dominance over the rest of the world. Today, the NIEO is a forgotten interlude, its optimism replaced by the financial austerity imposed by the IMF and the World Bank.

Exploring how America achieved its economic aims, and tracing the implications this has had through subsequent decades, Michael Hudson covers various topics including trade embargoes, changing US attitudes to foreign aid, the rise of protectionism, government regulation of international investments, the impact on specific industries including the oil industry, the implications of the new economic order and the future of war. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Ok
I bought this book as a textbook for a materials-based mechanical properties class. Not a bad book. It remains an old-style textbook, with a fair dealing in various topics. It seems more of an introduction or intermediate level text on the subject as entire other books have been written on the topics of each chapter. It does a good job of pulling those topics together, however. It is also a lot less expensive than similar books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fracture Mechanics Basic Book
This is a good book for beginners in fracture mechanics. The contents are simplified and pretty comprehensive.

4-0 out of 5 stars Probably good book
It wasn't really useful for me. My professor had to add a lot out of this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well written, balanced introduction to fracture mechanics
The 2nd edition of this book is well designed, written and illustrated and is not overly long.As a result it is very clear and easy to read and understand. The focus is on fracture mechanics fundamentals, including basic concepts, analysis, experiments and physical aspects of fracture. It would be a good text for a 1 semester course. However no exercises are given, so the instructor would need to develop these. Also notable is that the cost of this book is very reasonable in comparison toalternatives. Computational fracture mechanics and other modern topics such as cohesive zone modeling, crack tearing using critical CTOA, interface fracture and so on are not discussed.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice size, but lite on content
I bought this book to prepare for my Sub-I in ortho trauma. It is nice because it smaller than the Koval book so it fits easily into the lab coat and does not weigh to much. The draw back is that it has much less information than the Koval book. That being said, it does have all the critical info such as fracture classifications and management, but less background.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for PGY-1's and 2's in orthopaedics, ER residents
For the busy orthopaedic surgery and ER residents, this pocket "text" provides pertinent information regarding common fractures with focus on surgical options and relevant anatomy. Though not as detailed as other texts (i.e. Skeletal Trauma by Browner et al., and Hoppenfeld's Surgical Exposures...), the handbook comes close to providing the necessary information for appropriate evaluation and treatment of the patient with an orthopaedic injury. The second edition is a significant improvement over the first and would highly recommend this even for non-surgical physicians in private practice.

4-0 out of 5 stars great resource
This is a good book for everyday use. The format is brief yet helpful. It is a good book for residents, physician assistants and students in the early stages. I use it also to refresh my memory when I encounter something Ihave not seen in awhile.

5-0 out of 5 stars Handbook of Fractures

The text is well organized into the various musculoskeletal regions with thorough explinations of common and not so common injuries, including therecommended treatment. The illustrations are easily understood and add agreat deal to the effectivness of this book. It is designed to fit into alab coat pocket, and will make a handy reference. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Book Description
This book was written to help orthopaedic and trauma surgeons understand and treat acetabular fractures, laying out a method of reading both plain radiographs and CT scans. Starting from a perfect anatomical understanding of each fracture, readers are then shown in detail how to choose the most appropriate treatment and, in particular, the best approach for each. The possible complications of surgery, especially ectopic bone formation, and the way to prevent and deal with them are fully covered. A detailed account is given of the long-term results (3-30 years post-injury) in 569 cases operated on within 21 days of injury, 157 operated on at between 3 weeks and 4 months, and 91 cases in which operative reconstruction was delayed still longer. A self-training chapter on the interpretation of radiographs completes the book. This second edition of "Fractures of the Acetabulum" has been greatly expanded from the first, with comprehensive coverage of two- and three-dimensional CT scanning, many new details on surgical approaches and techniques, and a full analysis of the results of surgical treatment of 869 operated cases from among the 940 cases (updated from 469 in the first edition) included in the book: the largest series ever published of acetabular fractures operated upon by the same surgeon. Dr. Letournel considers that a trauma surgeon facing an acetabular fracture has to be able to answer one question: Does this fracture need surgical treatment or not? To answer that question the surgeon has to: 1. Gain a complete understanding of the anatomical type of the fracture 2. Accurately assess the displacement involved 3. Take into account the associated lesions and the age of the fracture ... Read more
