Product Description

Raghuram Rajan was one of the few economists who warned of the global financial crisis before it hit. Now, as the world struggles to recover, it's tempting to blame what happened on just a few greedy bankers who took irrational risks and left the rest of us to foot the bill. In Fault Lines, Rajan argues that serious flaws in the economy are also to blame, and warns that a potentially more devastating crisis awaits us if they aren't fixed.

Rajan shows how the individual choices that collectively brought about the economic meltdown--made by bankers, government officials, and ordinary homeowners--were rational responses to a flawed global financial order in which the incentives to take on risk are incredibly out of step with the dangers those risks pose. He traces the deepening fault lines in a world overly dependent on the indebted American consumer to power global economic growth and stave off global downturns. He exposes a system where America's growing inequality and thin social safety net create tremendous political pressure to encourage easy credit and keep job creation robust, no matter what the consequences to the economy's long-term health; and where the U.S. financial sector, with its skewed incentives, is the critical but unstable link between an overstimulated America and an underconsuming world.

In Fault Lines, Rajan demonstrates how unequal access to education and health care in the United States puts us all in deeper financial peril, even as the economic choices of countries like Germany, Japan, and China place an undue burden on America to get its policies right. He outlines the hard choices we need to make to ensure a more stable world economy and restore lasting prosperity.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fair and balanced look at economic crisis
I am hesistant to recommend another book on the economic crisis, as there have been many books on the subject published, not all of them worth reading.Fault Lines is ,however, well worth a read. Rajan, although a professor at the free-market leaning University of Chicago, takes no obvious party line. Eschewing the simplistic explanations of both the left and right, Rajan shows how a combination of Wall Street greed, the federal government pushing homeownership, and Federal Reserve manipulations of the interest rates combined to lead to the economic collapse. Rajan also discusses the safety net in America, concluding it is far too weak--he espeially emphasizes our weak health care system. If you can read just one more book on the subject, Fault Lines is your best bet.

5-0 out of 5 stars Provocative economic analysis
Dismissing the 2008 recession as an inevitable free market setback might seem simple, but economist Raghuram G. Rajan doesn't take the easy path. He makes a compelling case that the weak links in the global economy remain both visible and fixable. In a provocative analysis unhindered by ideological boundaries, Rajan argues against such government interventions as propping up the U.S. housing market. Yet he urges Americans to create a more generous safety net for unemployed workers facing a "jobless recovery." Rajan's more challenging suggestions, such as rebalancing the international economy or changing global monetary institutions, may not shift policy makers' actions, but he argues persuasively that failing to do so will mean deeper fault lines in the next crisis. getAbstract recommends his book to those who want a clear-eyed economic analysis.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended!
The author is enable to enhance his economic analysis with a deep understanding of socio-political forces in the US. This interdisciplinary approach makes this book a very insightful reading. My only criticism is that the title seems to suggest this is about the world economy when it clearly isn't. Although the analysis takes into account the setting within the global economy, it is exclusively about the US and doesn't even touch on the challenges faced by the developing world, Europe or Japan. There's nothing wrong with that but the title should be reflective of it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book of the decade
Several books have been published in the last couple of years in the wake of the global financial crisis of 2008. While the crisis originated in the United States of America, it soon spread across continents thanks to the close inter linkages of economic and financial globalization.

Raghuram Rajan analyses the situation from a very different perspective, never attempted in any of the recent books on the topic. There is no single explanation to the crisis or a single silver bullet to prevent one in the future. This is because, just as in geology, there are several "fault lines" deep below the earth's visible surface, where the collision of tectonic plates causes severe jolts on the surface, there exist such fault lines in the global economy, argues the author.

First there is an excellent analysis of the American economy. Recessions and recoveries are a part of the economic cycles. However one needs to distinguish recoveries in output, versus the recovery in lost jobs. What seems to be happening in the recent decades is that recovery in lost jobs is taking substantially larger time spans than recovery in output. This means, there is a fundamental change in the structure of the economy as it recovers, rendering a portion of the earlier labor pool redundant. The economy needs skills backed by higher education, and those who are employed, contribute to the recovery due to higher productivity. Several jobs have disappeared as technology and innovation have changed the complexion of employment.

No wonder then that there is rising disparities in income with every economic cycle and higher levels of unemployment. The people at the bottom quartile are left jobless and poorer. Politicians come into picture at this stage. In the recent crisis, with no other option left, the political policy makers pushed for affordable housing for the poor. This policy directive soon translated into the housing bubble that we all know was at the root of the recent crisis. The interesting aspect of the book is that the author argues convincingly that it is unfair to blame only the banking system for the credit and asset bubbles. This was only a rational response from a sophisticated banking system to maximize their share of gains in the opportunity provided by the political mandate. Debt became so easy that "even a dog could get a loan".

Global financial system being closely linked, thanks to the electronic speeds of banking and innovative "products", what started as securitized debt soon was nothing but snake oil freely flowing into the coffers of unsuspecting investors across the globe. Bankers were looking for the edge and acting on incentives to maximize their "Alpha" by taking on more "Tail risk".

This is one excellent example of a dangerous financial fault line that occurs when politically motivated stimulus comes into contact with a sophisticated financial sector.

The second set of fault lines emanate from export oriented economies (typically the late developers) that are fueling the spending spree of the highly indebted developed countries. Countries like China, South Korea and Taiwan are now government directed, producer biased export oriented economies with "managed capitalism" that encourages exports and distorts global trade balances. Most of these countries had bitter experiences when short term foreign funds were withdrawn causing the Asian crisis in the late 1990's. The strategy now is do build up substantial foreign exchange reserves.

In the case of China, the thrust on export orientation has led to a weak renminbi policy. The Chinese central bank PBOC buys dollars of exporters and gives them renminbi to prevent it from appreciating. To avoid inflation, it issues its own debt to "sterilize" the excess renminbi. Holding a huge dollar reserve, it looks to invest in the United States where interest rates are low. This forces low interest rates on domestic renminbi, pushing up asset prices. The fault lines have now successfully traversed oceans and continents.

The final set of fault lines analyzed is those that develop when different types of financial systems come into contact to finance the global trade imbalances.

While countries like the United States and the United Kingdom have arms-length financial systems with high levels of transparency, the rest of the world has less transparent relationship based banking. These systems not only work on different principles, but also have different forms of government interventions, that inherently have a tendency to distort each other's functioning when they come into close contact, explains the author.

This book is a comprehensive, in-depth, impartial and a rigorous study of the current global economy and financial systems. In addition to the analysis, there are also a set of recommendations to avoid global financial disasters in future. While these recommendations are based on sound principles, their implementation will pose a huge challenge since there is no single global regulator who has the authority to regulate global financial markets. Independent countries will continue following policies that benefit them, even at the cost of hampering long term global stability and growth.

I rate this book as one amongst the best in the first decade of the twenty-first century. It can make a huge difference, if policy makers pay attention to the fault lines before we are jolted by a more severe and painful global economic quake.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent book
After reading Roubini's and Rogoff's books on the recent crisis, I strived to find some new perspectives about this subject - while Roubini emphasizes financial and regulation areas, Rogoff undertakes a "sequel" (but with a lot more graphics) of Kindleberger's opus maximus on economic history, "Manias, Panics and Crashes". I followed some recommendations of a few colleagues about Rajan's new book. And it's worthy every penny.

First of all: Rajan's approach differs from that of other economists, stressing macroeconomic causal nexii, mixed with several refined analysis of cultural and entrepreneurial issues related to the matter. The fault lines from the book's title are fully explained, and make sense.

A must have for those interested in a better understading of 2008 crisis and its possible long-term consequences. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars For Ortho only
I'm an Emergency Medicine resident, I felt that the vast majority of information in the book did not apply to EM residents.Too much info regarding grading of fractures and operative technique.Grazes over the topics needed for family medicine, urgeny care, emergency care (what needs admission, what needs emergency consultation, etc).Recommend this book for orthopedics, but not Emergency Medicine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for Primary Care
I work in a location with limited orthopedic availability.
This book has allowed me to provide excellent treatment and follow up guidelines for my patients. It outlines types of casts, time-lines for follow ups and repeat xrays and even addresses differences in pediatric care.
Must have for the PCP who can't always refer out to ortho!

5-0 out of 5 stars Orthopedics Rotation
Excellent book for my 6 weeks Orthopedic Rotation as a Physician Assistant student. We are required to do 50% of our time in the fracture clinic and this book was extremely helpful.Very detailed recommendations on casting type, casting time, and imageing required.

I am sure this will come in handy in my daily practice as well as an Army PA.

5-0 out of 5 stars Up to dated , faithful and clear. Concise style
I'm a pain medicine doctor and also cover ER sometimes.
I read about half of entire book. Sentence was written in concise style and easy to get, also chapter was well systemized so that you can read it very fast with no miss. 'Anatomic consideration' part that always appear first of each chapter is really brilliant and fascinating. Surely I'm already very familliar with musculoskeletal anatomy, but this book gives me additional something. Figures or illustrates inserted was painted faithfully. No coarsness. Image guality is excellent, too.

'Indication of Orthopedic referral' part is maybe the pearl of this book and the reason many primary care doctor want this book. Yes, also this part was well made. Clearly, you can get to know in a min whether you should transfer a patient or not.

'Treatment' part is enough to make you a competent and sincere doctor, although it takes no long time to read it up
Treatment option is up to dated. For example writters know that ICNB or Epidural block is help ful in the case of rib fracture. And 'treatment of Spondylolysis' part makes it more reliable. (Some books are tend to be too sure about controversial facts)

It's well made and recommandable but not huge. I mean that I think abundunt US or MRI images are out of this book.
This book is based on plain image. Someone could feel something lacking cause these days US is spreading it's field in Muskuloskeletal diagnosis. I also love US, but look at the 'Bianchi book' ! I guess writter didn't want to weigh heavy pressure on your shoulder. This book should be fast, clear and concise.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for PCP for quick access to fracture management
Appreciated the timeliness with which I received this book.Great reference for my future use as a general pediatrician.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fracture Management for Primary Care
Great text. This has helped me multiple times as the only provider available in a deployed environment in the middle East.It talks about whether orthopedic referrals are necessary in specific circumstances. It doesn't really go through the specifics of how to apply braces and step by step processes but it offers some valuable insights. If you don't have this book and you are in an environment where people will be approaching you on an emergency basis, this book is crucial.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just what I was looking for
I'm currently writing my thesis, this book is perfect for anyone dealing with any kind of material that needs a fracture mechanics book. Just pure and simply perfect.

3-0 out of 5 stars Lots of room for improvement
Two specific things about this book keep me from rating it higher:

1- The book has a lot of errors. For instance, the polynomial equations for the stress concentration factors (K_I) in chapter 2 are labeled incorrectly. The diagrams for Center Cracked Tension and Double Edge Notched Tension are reversed. There are also other errors, but to list them all here would be pointless.

2- The problem set is close to worthless.Of the 600 page book, there are 18 pages of problems, or less than 100 total problems. The problems are not even that difficult. The "derivations" in the problem sets hardly require more than 2-3 lines of work, and very little deep thought. In other words, the problems are superficial.

Because of the lack of good problems and the errors (in fact, one of the problems seems to have an error in the difference between compliance and stiffness), I wouldn't feel comfortable using this book as a reference. No doubt, it does provide an excellent introduction or overview of fracture mechanics in general, but I would not feel comfortable with this book as my main source of information. There are also few examples with solutions to motivate learning.A good teacher is necessary to go beyond the basics of this text.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good book for mechanical engineering, I recomnend it to my students
This book covers most of the fundamental topics in fracture mechanics. I recommend it to my undergraduate students. It is very easy to understand. This book is a fundamental source in fracture mechanics. It is a classic book recommended by numerous bibliographies regarding this field of study.

3-0 out of 5 stars Broad overview with not much rigor
This book covers most of the fundamental topics in fracture mechanics. However, it lacks derivations of the equations, and the illustrations are a very crude. This book is probably appropriate for undergraduate level work, but not for graduate level.

5-0 out of 5 stars a must book for mechanical engineers

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice size, but lite on content
I bought this book to prepare for my Sub-I in ortho trauma. It is nice because it smaller than the Koval book so it fits easily into the lab coat and does not weigh to much. The draw back is that it has much less information than the Koval book. That being said, it does have all the critical info such as fracture classifications and management, but less background.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for PGY-1's and 2's in orthopaedics, ER residents
For the busy orthopaedic surgery and ER residents, this pocket "text" provides pertinent information regarding common fractures with focus on surgical options and relevant anatomy. Though not as detailed as other texts (i.e. Skeletal Trauma by Browner et al., and Hoppenfeld's Surgical Exposures...), the handbook comes close to providing the necessary information for appropriate evaluation and treatment of the patient with an orthopaedic injury. The second edition is a significant improvement over the first and would highly recommend this even for non-surgical physicians in private practice.

This is a very good book for an introduction towards Fracture Mechanics. The explanations are quite clear and author presents some straightforward derivations of many of the important concepts (derivation of the stress intensity factor, K, for example).I highly recommend this book to anyone looking at 'breaking' in to this field.

5-0 out of 5 stars Principles of Fracture Mechanics
"Principles of Fracture Mechanics" is the most concise yet complete survey on the equations and history of fracture mechanics I have found.Professor Sanford does an excellent job explaining how complex analysis is used to derive many of the equations governing the fracture of metals, without bogging the reader down in the mathematical details.I found the book to be enlightening. After reading it, I also found myself wishing I could have taken a course in fracture mechanics from Professor Sanford when I was in college.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Teacher
Alright, I've haven't read the final book. I do have an unfinished version that Professor Sanford distributed when I took this class from him at the U of Maryland. The initial version was excellent. I had tried to slog through other presentations on fracture mechanics and had gotten lost in the details.

Rather than just presenting the stress intensity factor and other concepts, he gave a good historical development of just where these quantities came from and why anyone would or should use them to predict time to failure. ... Read more

Product Description

Hudson is one of the tiny handful of economic thinkers in today's world who are forcing us to look at old questions in startling new ways. Alvin Toffler, best-selling author of Future Shock and The Third WaveThis new and updated edition of Michael Hudson's classic political economy text explores how and why the US came to achieve world economic hegemony.Originally published as the sequel to Hudson's bestselling Super Imperialism, Global Fracture explores American economic strategy during a key period in world history. In 1973, many of the world's most indebted countries sought to free themselves of trade dependency and the debt trap by creating a New International Economic Order (NIEO). This aimed to improve the terms of trade for raw materials and build up agicultural and industrial self-sufficiency. Global Fracture shows how the US undermined this progressive initiative and instead pushed for financial dominance over the rest of the world. Today, the NIEO is a forgotten interlude, its optimism replaced by the financial austerity imposed by the IMF and the World Bank.Exploring how America achieved its economic aims, and tracing the implications this has had through subsequent decades, Michael Hudson covers various topics including trade embargoes, changing US attitudes to foreign aid, the rise of protectionism, government regulation of international investments, the impact on specific industries including the oil industry, the implications of the new economic order and the future of war.

4-0 out of 5 stars The original US monetary sin of 1971 and the dangerous world it made
It is not possible to understand the extent or gravity of today's global debt-derivatives crisis without the historical analysis of Dr. Michael Hudson's book. This book is an unblinking look at the ugly underside of a dollarized world economic system. But note: the "Global Fracture" it describes is not the present debt-derivatives crisis.

This book drills deep into the original sin of the breakdown of the Bretton Woods system: the 1971 US repudiation of the gold standard for settlements by Richard Nixon and Henry Kissinger. This led to the destabilization and tumultuous replacement of gold settlements by the present paper-based global exchange system based on US dollars and US debt instruments that can never be repaid.Originally published in 1977, this updated edition describes the postwar history of the dollar-based Bretton Woods system and its degeneration into today's exclusively debt-backed sovereign pyramid scheme. So be aware the book is about the beginnings of this mess in the 1970s -- it only tangentially summarizes the present grave risk of the system completely unraveling due to abuse, fraud, systemic corruption, oligarchy, and unilateralism. It's also interesting to note that many primary perpetrators of the gold repudiation of 1971 are still the central powerbrokers today -- Henry Kissinger foremost of all.

This is serious world economic history and analysis, not a glib gloss like Tom Friedman's globo-touts or an anecdotal personal perspective like John Perkins' "Confessions of an Economic Hitman."It's deeply incisive and far from 'economically correct.Read this to understand the true depth and complexity of the dollar meltdown, whose roots are to be found with the financial schemes and diktats of Kissinger and Nixon in the 1970s.This Nixon-era economic warfare aimed at forcing the EU and ASEAN to hold paper dollars and compel resource producers like OPEC to accept a US check at gunpoint for commodities.

Hudson's career began as a national economist at Chase 40 years ago -- where he analyzed developing countries' resources and debt carrying capacity in order to load them with all the debt they could bear. But he evolved into an unflinching if strident critic of the entire international debt framework and the fatal burden it imposes on the Third World. Most recently Hudson was chief economic advisor to Rep. Dennis Kucinich during Kucinich's 2008 presidential candidacy.

Product Description
Reprinted by the John Charnley Trust, the original text having been out of print for many years, this beautifully presented book deals very simply and scientifically with most of the difficult fractures an orthopaedic surgeon is likely to meet in his/her practice. Despite the fact that the original text was published in 1950, the basic principles espoused in the book still apply today, and it remains one of the most concise and complete books on closed fracture treatment ever written. This core textbook has been basic reference for orthopaedic surgeons for half a century. It describes the elementary mechanics of reduction and immobilisation and shows how the commonest injuries can be managed by proven methods based on these general principles. It is a must for anyone embarking on a career in orthopaedics and is a classic text that all orthopaedic trainees and consultants should have on their shelves. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The most important fracture book ever....
That this book is again in reprint confirms its timelessness.Whilst operative management of fractures is commonplace, the non operative management continues to be important - especially for emergency departments providing first aid of these injuries. The concepts taught by Charnley are still relevant today, and every emergency department should have one.Every orthopaedic trainee should have one. A must read.

2-0 out of 5 stars Out of date
Although it is a classic, it's a shame it doesn't have a thorough revision, which makes it look awkward, old-fashioned and less profitable than I thought.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential knowledge for fracture management
Despite the numerous techno developments in the orthopedic field, many if not most e fractures can still be treated closed thus minimizing complications and potential litigation from surgery gone wrong. Furthermore, with hospital costs skyrocketing (hospital-based outpatient surgery begins at $4000.00 in many locations) your patient will be happy with the minimal costs for closed reduction. This book is essential for all orthopedic residents and should be a fundamental text in all ortho libraries.

5-0 out of 5 stars Every orthopedic surgeon or orthopedics/traumatology resident should read this book
This book is a valuable source of scientific information concerning the closed treatment of fractures. Sir John Charnley wrote a consistent text guided by biological, biomechanical and practical concepts.
The core of the text is focused on the elements involved with the closed treatment of fractures, backgrounded by the vast experience and scientific knowledge of the author.
Despite the fact that this book was first published in 1950, the high quality of information provided in this publication still apply today. Undoubtly, this book must be among other recent orthopedic publications as a reliable source of non-operative fracture care information.
I believe that every orthopedic surgeon or orthopedics/traumatology resident should read this book. ... Read more

Product Description
Since the publication of the first edition in 1959, Apley's System of Orthopaedics and Fractures has been an essential textbook for those seeking to understand the structure and function of the musculoskeletal system, its diseases and its response to trauma. The book's success was initiated by the late Alan Apley's skills as a teacher, and the care and forethought that he brought to the presentation of the content.

The current authors have developed and extended this foundation to produce a thoroughly modern textbook of orthopaedic surgery, bringing complementary expertise while retaining the book's characteristic philosophy and approach. They are joined by a selection of expert contributors from around the world, who add material on a wide variety of subjects including radiology, open fractures, neuromuscular disorders, and inflammatory arthropathies.

This 9th edition echoes its predecessors in following Apley's approach to the orthopaedic patient. As before, the work is divided ino three section: General Orthopaedics, Regional Orthopaedics, and Fractures and Joint Injuries. The material has been fully updated and revised, including the replacement of the majority of the photographs, giving this edition a modern and relevant feel. The illustrations are all provided in a downloadable form on the book's accompanying website.

Apley's System's wide readership of practicing orthopaedic surgeons, postgraduate trainees and residents in orthopaedics and general surgery, A&E specialists and physiotherapists is evidence of the author's ability to instruct and inspire. The book is a trully fitting introduction to modern-day orthopaedics. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Used it for 15 years as an aircraft structural engineer
It was 15 years a go that I got this book as a part of a lecture by Dr. Broek. Over the years I have come across many books on this subject. I have to admit that this book is one of the best introductory material written on DTA. There are other books with probably additional data, however, what separates this book fom the rest, is Broek's ability to write in a coherent and easy to follow format.

Unfortunately, since the book is not in print the price is a bit too steep for a new copy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
This is a great book.I think I prefer the earlier editions because they are more based on metals

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference
This textbook reads more like an encyclopedia than a normal textbook. The presentation of the material is very thorough and accurate yet assumes a reader more mature in the material.I am using the text in a materials behavior course as a senior in mechanical engineering and many of my classmates have come to similar conclusions. Both my professor for the course and another in the same field also agreed the text is probably better suited as a reference rather than a stand-alone teaching tool.Overall, excellent text but maybe more useful for a more learned reader than I.

3-0 out of 5 stars Overall not a bad book, but not close to being good
Many of the explanations used in the book were well written but a bit hard to understand.Equations jump out of nowhere without any elaboration and the problems asked at the end come with no supplement or explanation in the chapter to help you out.I mostly had to look up the subjects on wikipedia to really get a better understanding of much of the material.Although I acknowledge this to be a book for an upper division class, so I'm not too disappointed overall with it, seeing as how I've already taken the introductory course to material sciences and it was my fault for really forgetting the minor details needed to fully comprehend the subject.

4-0 out of 5 stars Strong on Fracture, weaker on Deformation details
I bought this book for a one-credit course at Virginia Tech and hardlyever used it.That, I believe, chiefly reflects excellent teachingmethodology and not insufficiency of this book.

Back in Switzerland, Itook a big, long course in deformation and fracture mechanics at the SwissFederal Institute of Technology in Lausanne, and all of a sudden this bookcame in handy for extra illustrations and alternative explanations.Whileit is particularly excellent when treating fracture and devotes much spaceto this subject, deformation mechanics are often simplified or containomissions in the derivation.Unfortunately, my course went into furtherdetail than Dr. Hertzberg's book, so for the interesting details ondeformation (e.g. a good explanation of the Lüders Bands) I must searchelsewhere.

However, readers will appreciate the last chapter of casestudies, which is instructive and sometimes even humorous (though it mightrequire black humor to find a bursting tank of molasses funny).

Inshort, if you're into things that break, this book will make you happy.Ifyou want to know what happens before, this book will help, but won't by anymeans be exhaustive. ... Read more
