Product Description

L.M. Portnoy is one of Russia's leading radiologists. This book is the result of his more than 30 years' experience in the field of cancer diagnosis. The author reviews for us the potentials – currently greatly underestimated – of radiological examination and the traditional X-ray for the diagnosis of gastric cancer.

This comprehensive overview of methodological approaches to the X-ray examination of the stomach and corrected tumor semiotics will help practicing physicians and residents to diagnose even the most minuscule tumors. Portnoy covers all diagnostic methods related to abdominal cancer, with thorough explanations of the methodological, semiotic, and organizational aspects.

This work by one of the best-known Russian specialists in X-ray diagnosis will be of interest not only for all those who want to know more about the history of radiology as a profession, but also for students, who can study the tips and tricks of a master.

Editorial Review

Product Description
This new book presents important leading-edge research on stomach cancer.Stomach cancer (also called gastric cancer ) is the growth of cancer cells in the lining and wall of the stomach.

Stomach cancer represents roughly 2% (25,500) cases of all new cancer cases yearly in the United States, but it is much more common in Japan, Great Britain, South America, and Iceland. It is associated with high salt in the diet, smoking, and low intake of fruits and vegetables. Infection with H. pylori is the main risk factor in about 80% or more of gastric cancers. It is more common in men.

A very small percentage of diffuse-type gastric cancers are thought to be genetic. Hereditary Diffuse Gastric Cancer (HDGC) has only recently been identified and research is ongoing, but genetic testing and treatment options are available for families at risk.

Metastasis occurs in 80-90% of individuals with stomach cancer, with a five year survival rate of 75% in those diagnosed in early stages and less than 30% of those diagnosed in late stages. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
Gastric adenocarcinoma is the second most common cancer worldwide. It is usually diagnosed at a late stage and prognosis is poor; even with modern diagnostic and treatment methods the 5-year survival is only 10%. Improvements in overall patient survival can only be achieved by earlier diagnosis and by tailored therapeutic strategies based on tumor type, location and stage at presentation. This volume provides a state-of-the-art, integrated diagnostic and therapeutic approach to patient management. The role of the upper GI series, endoscopy, endoscopic ultrasound, MDCT, MRI, and PET/CT in the diagnosis, staging and follow-up of patients with gastric cancer is emphasized. The relative strengths and limitations of these diagnostic examinations will be presented in context with the most recent epidemiologic, pathologic, and therapeutic concepts regarding this tumor. With expert contributions from members of an international multidisciplinary team, this is an invaluable guide to the diagnosis and management of gastric malignancies. ... Read more

Product Description
Recent clinical trials of adjuvant therapy for gastric cancer in Japan have shown improved survival benefits, but the results have been considered controversial and have been viewed with some skepticism in the West. Until now, the efforts of Japanese surgical oncologists in multimodality therapy have not been fully understood because they have not been adequately reported in English. This volume now presents the experience and expertise of Japanese surgeons who utilize preoperative or intraoperative chemotherapy, or a combination of systemic and regional chemotherapy. Their collected work provides valuable insight in the Japanese perspective and success in treating gastric cancer. Included in the appendix is an extensive tabular analysis of the gastric cancer database at the Cancer Institute Hospital of Tokyo. Probably the largest such database in the world from a single institution, the analyses present the state of the art in treatment of gastric cancer. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
The overall prognosis for patients with gastric cancer remains poor as tumors are often diagnosed at an advanced stage, despite new developments and technical advances in endoscopic diagnosis and therapy. This publication brings together leading experts in the fields of basic research and clinical management of gastric cancer, to share their expertise with the clinical community. State-of-the-art reviews discuss the pathogenesis of and the most important risk factors for the development of gastric cancer, potential benefits of chemoprevention and Helicobacter pylori eradication. Moreover, new diagnostic modalities and surgical therapy, including the potential benefits of neoadjuvant and adjuvant therapies, are presented. As most patients require palliative therapy because of locally advanced or metastasized cancers, several reviews are dedicated to advances in the chemotherapy of advanced gastric cancers and peritoneal metastasis. ...
