Product Description
Digestive-disease-associated mortality accounts for a major part of all deaths in Western societies and inflammatory diseases such as GI infections, viral hepatitis, GERD or cancers due to chronic inflammation have a tangible economic and social impact. What further aggravates the situation is the fact that complex immunological disorders have surfaced where anti-infective treatments are not effective. Fortunately, due to breakthroughs in basic research that are being successfully translated into clinical practice, new treatment strategies are constantly evolving. In addition to the development of new therapeutic measures, however, it is also mandatory to review and periodically refine established treatment regimens to reflect current knowledge and ensure up-to-date medical care. Combining outstanding basic research reviews with cutting-edge treatment guidelines on inflammatory disorders of the GI tract, this book presents newly identified treatment targets and provides clinicians and practitioners in the field with a most useful account of the state of the art. ... Product Description

A child presents with weight loss, fatigue, and stomach pain. Is the diagnosis psychological, as in an eating disorder? Might it be medical, as in a GI disorder? Could it be both?

A young adolescent is assessed to have a gastrointestinal disorder. Do you take puberty into account when planning treatment?

Complex overlapping of physical and psychological symptoms is a hallmark of cases such as these - and a major factor in making diagnosis and intervention difficult.

In Pediatric Gastrointestinal Disorders:Biopsychosocial Assessment and Treatment, authors Cunningham and Banez pool their considerable expertise to give practitioners working with children a state-of-the-art, biopsychosocial grounding in this challenging area of practice:

- In-depth overview of pediatric gastrointestinal disorders, their prevalence and etiology

- Descriptions of the most common disorders (including irritable bowel syndrome, recurring abdominal pain, rumination disorder, and fecal incontinence), with their typical psychological and behavioral symptoms

- Conceptual and theoretical perspectives informing the authors’ biopsychosocial approach

- Reviews of empirically-based, clinically sound assessment and treatment strategies

- Case studies applying this knowledge in real-world detail, demonstrating collaborations between clinicians, patients, and families

Its lucid presentation, level of detail, and commitment to integrative care make Assessment and Treatment of Gastrointestinal Disorders in Children an important resource for children’s practitioners in both the medical and mental health fields. By featuring examples ranging from toddlers to teens, the authors have modeled a continuum of developmentally appropriate treatment.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Reference Book
Many of us in pediatric psychology working with patients with GI disorders did not aquire our knowledge of GI disorders while in graduate school.Instead, we sought out and amassed any literature on the topic we could find, learned from our GI colleagues, and perhaps most importantly, learned from clinical experience. This book is perhaps the first to condense all of that literature into one useful resource and make it applicable to the practitioner. The book provides a well-written explanation of the biopsychosocial approach to treatment, and case examples that bring research findings to life.

I sure wish I had this text when I was starting my work in GI/pediatric psychology!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource
This book is an excellent resource for both professionals (e.g., physicians, behavioral/mental health care providers) and parents.Well-written, thorough, and easy to understand, Cunningham and Banez's text covers topics ranging in content from IBD/IBS and pediatric toileting difficulties to esophageal disorders, and all discussion is couched within an informative biopsychosocial approach.I would highly recommend this text to anyone working with, or living with, a child or adolescent struggling with GI difficulties.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful Book
The information on globus sensation helped us with our daughter's fear of choking on food after she had choked on a piece of a dinner roll.We are very thankful to have Dr. Cunningham's expertise and care. Many parent's/patients would not know there was such a disorder without this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Peds GI Better Understood
This book is a great resource for a wide variety of pediatric healthcare providers. It provides an in depth understanding of a broad spectrum of factors affecting pediatric gastrointestinal complaints and related problems. This book can better enable primary care providers to deal with many of these issues. In some cases the kids may even be able to avoid visits to specialists. In other cases, the primary care providers will be better able to understand, support and complement the care their patients are receiving from specialists.
Pediatric specialists-such as psychologists and those in the field of gastroenterology- can also benefit from this reference. It provides a very thorough look at GI complaints from a biopsychosocial perspective, allowing for a more holistic approach to treating patients.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for anyone with stomach/digestive difficulties
What a great book! Even though this book was written a number of years ago, it is still the single best resource out there for anyone who is investigating digestive difficulties and issues like heartburn and acid reflux. We learned so much about these problems by reading this book . . . Even if you are only looking to know enough about your problem in order to talk intelligently with your doctor, you'll want to have this book as either a front-to-back read, or as a reference book. It is complete and thorough, and definitely leans towards natural cures as opposed to big pharmaceutical company interests. I take a lot of supplements, and I really learned about what could cause heartburn and what might help. Now, my acid reflux is controlled and livable. Before the book, I couldn't get through the night. Great stuff!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book on subject!
I have read many books on the sunject, and this is by far one of the best. If you buy but one book, it should be this one first. Next is 'Why Stomach Acid is Good for You'. This book talks on things more form the alternative health standpoint. If conventional medicine was working for you, you would not be looking for more help. I believe that the alternative way is the way to go for reflux.
This book is so detailed that I have had to take notes as I read it.

5-0 out of 5 stars "No More Heartburn"
So glad I purchased this book. I have a hiatal hernia and suffer horribly with GERD. This book had some great ideas that I had never heard of before.I have tried a few of them and they really work. I had purchased other books that the treatments did not work.Great book, would recommend to anyone suffering from GERD.

5-0 out of 5 stars This helped me A LOT! Problems gone!
After reading this book, my heartburn problems went away. It took less than a month. There are some common sense things in here but also A LOT of important things you NEED to know about food and drugs. The example menus are helpful to illustrate her ideas and inform your own diet. In other words, they helped me construct my own diets, but I didn't try to follow her menus to the letter as that is just too complicated. It was easier for me to just get the gist of it. I have not had any recurring problems one year after having read this book. I have suffered on and off for 15 years and her advice made lots of sense and has changed my eating habits. My advice, read the book, learn what you need to know, but just use her example menus as a guide. Can't say enough good things. Here's to your health!

4-0 out of 5 stars It Worked
I cant believe it but this book cured me!

Although it is a tough read - the contents of the book help you overcome the pain.I highly recommend it. ... Read more

Product Description
The field of motility continues to evolve rapidly. The 33 chapters contained in Schuster Atlas of Gastrointestinal Motility in Health and Disease, Second Edition, have an expanded scope both in depth and breadth from the first edition. This text includes more information in areas covered by the first edition, as well as new discoveries in previously unexplored areas. In keeping with the traditional concept of an atlas, this text focuses on descriptions of techniques using graphic pictorial tracings to illustrate diagnostic and therapeutic applications of motility studies in clinical disorders. Schuster Atlas of Gastrointestinal Motility in Health and Disease, Second Edition, is organ-centered and is divided into two major parts. The first part deals with basic physiology of the gastrointestinal tract with an emphasis on neural and smooth muscle physiology. In the second part, each chapter within seven separate sections, begins with a description of normal physiology and recording techniques for a specific organ, followed by a clinical discussion of the pathophysiology and motility tests pertinent to that particular organ system. This book is intended to help health care providers further their appreciation and understanding of gastrointestinal motility and its disorders, enhance their diagnostic accuracy and thereby improve the treatment of patients with motility disorders of the digestive tract. ...
