5-0 out of 5 stars `The sneak thief of sight'
Last week I was told that I had a form of secondary glaucoma. This was not totally unexpected, but it was still a shock: enough of a shock that I couldn't think of any sensible questions to ask the ophthalmologist who told me.Still, as he wasn't the ophthalmologist who diagnosed it, he may not have been able to answer some of my questions anyway. So, I left his office in a state of shock but determined to find out more about this `sneak thief of sight'.

This book was one of the first I was able to acquire, and I found it contains a lot of valuable information. With its help, I was able to differentiate types of glaucoma, read up on the treatment I've been prescribed and start work on a list of questions for my treating specialists. It was sobering to read that the common thread among all glaucoma is damage to the optic nerve and that there are more than forty different types of glaucoma, not of all of which are associated with raised intraocular pressure. It was discomfiting to read that the damage caused by glaucoma cannot be reversed. It was frightening to realise that most (but not all) forms of glaucoma have no symptoms or cause no change in vision until late in the course of the disease.

It is not possible to absorb all of the information contained within this book on one reading, nor will it all be equally relevant to all glaucoma sufferers. While the resource information contained in the book is especially useful to readers in North America, most of the information will be relevant to readers elsewhere.

I recommend this book to those who want, or need, to know more about glaucoma. For sufferers, no book can substitute for specialist care. But the information in this book may well assist you in working with your specialist to manage your own care in an informed and optimal way.

The Glaucoma Book is both a comprehensive academic work with evidence-based science and exhaustive bibliographies, and an everyday, pragmatic guide for general ophthalmologists, optometrists, and resident physicians who need immediate answers while examining patients. Its 92 chapters and 38 sidebar essays range from conventional topics (e.g., open angle glaucoma, pigmentary dispersion syndrome, pediatric glaucomas) to those that have not previously appeared in a glaucoma text (e.g., medical-legal aspects of glaucoma care, doing community-based glaucoma research). Diagnostic tests and instrumentation, current and possible future medical therapies, and traditional and cutting-edge surgical interventions are thoroughly explored. The contributors come from well-known academic institutions and high-volume community based glaucoma practices. Photos, illustrations, and tables are sprinkled liberally throughout the book. 5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read for Glaucoma Patients
After reading Glaucoma, Patient to Patient, I ordered multiple copies to share with doctors as well as friends. The book is highly readable, even when dealing with technical medical terminology, witty, full of personal anecdotes and stories by an author with intimate knowledge of Glaucoma and its debilitating effects.Edith Marks remains upbeat and positive throughout the book and approaches the disease holistically so if you are a vitamin, alternative medicine person you will find tons of information as well as someone who wants more information about the medical model. She provides lots of information about possible treatments as well as the risks involved.
As a high risk for glaucoma person, I feel that this book gives me the information that I need to take control of my situation in terms of total health and well being.
I recommend this book to anyone who has glaucoma, might have glaucoma or knows someone with this disease. It is a must read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Edith Marks follows up her helpful earlier published book, Coping With Glaucoma with her new publlication.
Edith Marks has exceeded her previous book, Coping With Glaucoma with her updated, detailed new book, Glaucoma-Patient to Patient. The new book is a valuable source for those of us with Glaucoma issues. The text is filled with up-to-date information, answering all those questions we are afraid to ask our surgeons and those which our surgeons are just too busy to answer at appointment time.Armed with the information in Marks' book, we can approach our eye care with the knowledge we beed to go forth and proceed with treatments and surgeries required. This book assists patients in their quest to save their vision and pursue the best course of action.Ms. Marks' book is a no-nonsense addition to self-help books on Glaucoma and is densely packed with information in over 500 hundred pages. The text is small so those with sight issues may want to use a magnifier. Thanks to Ms. Marks for her service to patients in need of strategy and knowledge about their disease and how to cope going forward with the courage that knowledge can provide.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
Love this book! It has everything you'd want to know about glaucoma and especially how to live with the disease.I also have Edith's previous book, Coping With Glaucoma, but this one has much more information in it.Everything your doctor never tells you!

The book is well documented and indexed and a great resource for patients, family, friends and anyone else interested in learning more about the "silent thief of sight". ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars `What you don't know about your eyes can hurt your vision'
I picked up this book as part of my current search for information about glaucoma. While this book reinforces much of the information about glaucoma I've picked up from other sources, I found some aspects particularly useful.Conditions that impact on sight can be very stressful for those of us who have taken good vision for granted. For those of us who are excessively print-oriented (as many readers are) the prospect of vision damage or loss can be terrifying.

In this book, the diagrams presenting the anatomy and physiology of the eye are well labelled and easy to follow. Making sense of diagrams can be difficult for those of dealing with any degree of visual impairment, and keeping diagrams free of clutter while conveying all of the necessary information is challenging. The step by step process of diagnosis and treatment is also helpful as it explains what tests might be involved and why.All of this is information that some patients may find useful, and others who are seeking more general information about various eye conditions may find informative.

I found the book informative without being overwhelming. The book contains a good glossary and index. Some of the information on treatments may not be current (the book was published in 1992) but the underlying explanations and diagrams are.As with other books on medical conditions requiring specialist treatment, this book augments professional advice. If you've been diagnosed with glaucoma or with cataracts (or are close to someone who has) you may wish to consider this book.

This book has a valuable amount of information regarding the health benefits of bilberry extract. It explains the way bilberry helps diabetic retinopathy.I am hoping this information will also help a family member with macular degeneration. This small easy to read book tells dosage recommendations also.

1-0 out of 5 stars Look elsewhere. This pub is awful.
Bilberry & Lutein is replete with words and phrases like "ischaemia reperfusion injury", "artiolar tone", and "vasomotion".But mostly they are not anywhere defined.Evidently the reader is supposed to dope out their meaning from context.Lotsa luck.

Again, there are sentences like, "Italian researchers also showed that bilberry anthocyanosides was beneficial against on ischaemia reperfusion injury...."
And there are facts like, "Corn is the vegetable with the highest quantity of lutein...".(According to the USDA database, spinach, kale, and various other kinds of greens contain many times as much lutein per unit weight as corn.)

I read a lot of health literature.I found Lutein & Bilberry exceedingly difficult to puzzle out, and to the extent I managed to do so, rather unreliable. It reads as though written by someone whose first language is not English, whose knowledge of the subject matter going in was zero, and whose "research" consisted of reading abstracts of journal articles and copying out sentences from them not too carefully.I find the pamphlet (at 28 pages of large-print text, it certainly is not a book) so bad that I have strong doubts about the genuineness of the three enthusiastic reviews that are standing as I write this one.Bilberry and lutein are undoubtedly good for you, but if you want the details, look elsewhere.

At the end of the pamphlet is a full-page, 30-item, list of titles (including Bilberry & Lutein), all but two by Beth Ley, offered for sale by BL Publications. For me, this author's name on any publication is sufficient reason to reject it without further consideration.

For info on the significance of Ms. Ley's "Ph. D.", see:

5-0 out of 5 stars Big Power from a Little Book
When I first received the book I was disappointed because it was such a 'little book'...THEN!...I started reading it! It is one of the most encouraging, self-empowering books I have ever read.Every sentence is important.
Even though the book was centered around the healing of the author's son's glaucoma, it applies to all illnesses, all diseases, including emotional problems. I have believed for many years that we create our own reality, but there are times we slip and forget and fall into believing that that what has currently manifested in our lives is what is "real." Only the marvelous, loving field of energy is "real."...and it IS at our command, if we so choose to believe. The book should bve welcomed by people of all walks and faiths. It definately walks hand in hand with quantum physics!
This is a 'happy, positive book' and I am so thankful for having found it. Thank you, Nancy L Harris for sharing your story and experience with the world.
