Product Description

Are you looking for concise, practical answers to those questions that are often left unanswered by traditional glaucoma references? Are you seeking brief, evidence-based advice for common clinical dilemmas? Curbside Consultation in Glaucoma: 49 Clinical Questions provides quick and direct answers to the thorny questions most commonly posed during a “curbside consultation” between glaucoma specialists.

Dr. Dale K. Heuer, and associate editors Dr. Steven J. Gedde and Dr. Richard Lewis, have designed this unique reference in which top glaucoma specialists offer expert advice, preferences, and opinions on tough clinical questions commonly associated with the day-to-day diagnosis and care of glaucoma patients. The unique Q&A format provides quick access to current information related to glaucoma with the simplicity of a conversation between two colleagues. Numerous images, diagrams, and references are included to enhance the text and to illustrate glaucoma pearls.

Curbside Consultation in Glaucoma: 49 Clinical Questions provides information basic enough for residents while also incorporating expert pearls that even high-volume glaucoma specialists will appreciate. General practitioners, residents, fellows, and optometrists alike will benefit from the user-friendly and casual format and the expert advice contained within.

Some of the questions that are answered:
• Which imagining device should I use in my practice?
• How should I set a target intraocular pressure?
• What is “maximum medical therapy” for glaucoma now?
• Which glaucoma medications may be used safely during pregnancy? In children?
• Is selective laser trabeculoplasty better than argon or diode laser trabeculoplasty?
• Which of the new incisional surgical alternatives to trabeculectomy should I consider for my patients? In what clinical settings should I consider them?
• In which patients with glaucoma and cataract should I perform a combined
procedure? Cataract surgery alone? Trabeculectomy first?

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic
This book is another welcome addition to the Kerbside series.Absolutely brilliant for both written and exam preparation if your exit exams are designed to test your executive thought processes (as in Australia) rather than just your ability to rote learn material.

I bought this book and the Cataract volume after being very impressed by the Neuro title, when I was preparing for my recent final exam.I could recognise clinical scenarios (patients I have actually treated, and conundrums I have pondered) in at least half the questions.

This book and its sisters are rolled gold; I can't recommend them highly enough.I also think these books will prove their worth into practice: where else can you source opinions from clinicians with an international reputation? You will not regret buying any of these books. It does not replace Kanski, but it is well worth your time to read and re-read this book. ... Editorial Review

Product Description
Glaucoma is one of the main causes of blindness throughout the world. It is characterized by death of the retinal ganglion cells, which is associated with loss of the axons making up the optic nerve. Recent studies have demonstrated support for the classification of glaucoma as a degenerative disease of the central nervous system (CNS). The search for treatment modalities that are effective for all patients with glaucoma has resulted in numerous studies aimed at identifying neuroprotection strategies for the treatment of this disease, like those used for other degenerative diseases of the CNS.

The present book will provide an in-depth examination of the most recent findings regarding glaucoma, including risk factors, diagnosis, clinical monitoring, treatment, and above all, the need for treatment based on the concept of neuroprotection. A large part of the book is devoted to research related to this new approach to the treatment of glaucoma.Aspects that will be analyzed include experimental models of glaucoma, clinical protocols for the study of neuroprotective therapies, mechanisms underlying glaucomatous damage to neurons of the retina and other "stations" in the visual pathways of the CNS, and finally proposals for new strategies for preventing neuronal injury in glaucoma patients.

* Describes the most recent developments on neuroprotection of the optic nerve, including experimental models now used and clinical protocols
* Discusses new strategies for the prevention of neuronal injury in glaucoma patients
* Focuses on evidence-based risk factors, innovative diagnostic aspects and advanced medical/surgical treatment of glaucoma ... Read more

Product Description
This research applied Bayesian modeling to medication noncompliance in glaucoma patients. A model-based decision support system using a Bayesian Network was developed to determine whether a patient was complying with the medications prescribed by the physician. Results from this study could potentially improve the decision making process, given the uncertain and incomplete data available to a physician. The model may be generalized to other business situations where a decision has to be made based on incomplete and uncertain data sets.

Bayesian Networks have increasingly become tools of choice in solving problems involving uncertainty in the medical domain. These models have been successfully applied to diagnosis applications. The purpose of this research was to devise a Bayesian framework to assess the compliance with medication in glaucoma patients.

Product Description
Glaucoma is the most common neurodegenerative disease and the second most common cause of blindness worldwide after cataract. While the diagnosis of end-stage glaucoma can be made by any physician trained in the use of the ophthalmoscope, it is preferable to diagnose glaucoma at an early stage, when intervention can alter the course of the disease and change the prognosis. Packed with superb illustrations, "Fast Facts: Glaucoma" is bursting with practical information on the disease, including: a concise overview of the glaucoma subtypes and their global prevalence; a clear explanation of the pathophysiology alongside what the patient actually experiences; the questions to ask when taking a history; the key elements of a comprehensive eye examination; how to minimize the impact of the disease on the patient and reduce risk factors; the latest medical and surgical treatments; and, monitoring of the condition - including detail of follow-up examinations."Fast Facts: Glaucoma" is a highly readable practical reference for all medical and eyecare practitioners, an aid for students and scientists involved in the study of eye disease and a sound overview for anyone interested in this challenging disease. What is Glaucoma? How can it be detected? How can it be treated? "Fast Facts: Glaucoma" answers all of these questions. ... Read more
