Book Description

Guillain-Barré Syndrome causes the body's immune system to attack the peripheral nervous system, producing feelings of tingling and weakness that increase in intensity until the patient is almost totally paralyzed. Claiming thousands of new victims each year, GBS can strike anyone at any age, regardless of gender or ethnicity. Fortunately, most patients have a good recovery, but the pathway to this goal can be slow and frightening. Written by two experts in the field — one a GBS survivor himself — Guillain-Barré Syndrome addresses all aspects of the condition, including initial symptoms, diagnostic evaluation and criteria, general and illness-specific treatments, and typical outcomes. The book covers a wide range of issues, including pain without injury and other abnormal sensations unique to GBS; the rehabilitation process; workplace adjustment with incomplete recovery; sexual dysfunction; guidelines for caregivers; and much more. Written in laymen’s terms, this practical, reassuring book helps patients manage this puzzling illness.

Book Description
I assure you, though, there is nothing trite about coming down with Guillain-Barrè syndrome. For the person hit by it, it’s war and revolution wrapped in one: A catastrophe, an upheaval, a devastating blow.

But also an invaluable experience and a possibility for renewal.

I wouldn’t be what I am now, a man at peace with himself and the world, had I not come down with, and fought back from, this terrible ailment. But I don’t want to sound excessive. It isn’t terminal cancer at young age, or trauma-induced coma and vegetative state; but, as Joseph Heller said, it’s no laughing matter, either. The blessing about Guillain-Barrè syndrome—and I mean that with only a little bit of irony—is that it doesn’t affect the gray matter upstairs. You know it’s bad, but you also know it can be defeated, and the struggle to overcome it lends a tremendous meaning of truthfulness to the old saying: “That which does not kill you…” You know the rest. It can paralyze you completely, and, occasionally, do you in, but the road back or, as I imply in my title, the uphill struggle from the abyss is Herculean and character forming.Download Description

5-0 out of 5 stars Up from the Abyss
I read this book 19 months after my husband got sick with Gullain-Barre syndrome. He is still trying to rehab. Reading this book helped me to understand that recovery takes longer than you think it should sometime. There is so little information. I was given one page explaining GBS at the onset of this syndrome. One page doesn't cover the months and years that it takes. That is why books written by the patient or family is so important.

A journey of personal redemption from the ravages of Guillain-Barrè syndrome...I have a good friend who is 68 who on June 13, 2005 learned what had caused him to lose the ability to move.It paralyzed him and it is GBS.I bought this book and 2 others to better understand what he has and how he might progress with his recovery. 4 out of 100,000 people get this GBS and these kinds of books are great to read and the endings are very good to re-read because all 3 books the people fully recovered and that is a blessing. This book is very good for anyone to read.Life is short and there are many bumps in the road...This GBS is a big ass bump that I hope to never encounter again... ... Read more

Editorial Review

Book Description
This book is about three people from different walks of life, each of whom experienced a life-changing episode of Guillain-Barré Syndrome. Three dramatic stories in one.

Firstly, a story of the Author's remarkable almost complete recovery following his encounter with the syndrome. It is a frank and personal account of his struggle to regain much of what he had lost in bodily function during one year of hospitalisation. It should provide inspiration and possibly answer so many questions typically asked by others afflicted with this syndrome.

Secondly, case studies written by two co-author contributors, one a Calgary Veterinarian and mother of two, the other a retired Vancouver resident who was struck with Guillain-Barré Syndrome whilst shopping for a boat in England.

"There is no single answer to the question as to how life may change after recovery from this disorder. Each case appears to be unique. That is why I have chosen to include, not just a record of my partial recovery, but also the recovery record of two additional people, each different from one another's and each certainly different from mine (Author's Preface)".

"We eventually identified a boat—only three feet short of what we had wanted— that was within our budget.

At this point Heather's brother, who lived nearby, said he would like a share in the boat, to which we agreed. During this discussion in his house I had to ask him to refrain from smoking, as my throat was quite sore. I was feeling rather run down and often felt cold. About the same time on a Saturday, I felt a tingling in the finger tips of my left hand and found they were a bit swollen. I mentioned it to Heather, but it did not seem serious. It was, however, the first sign that I had contracted GBS. If only I had known, the treatment might have been started earlier! (Patrick Hill)"

"Probably the worst face of Guillain-Barré Syndrome is the effect it has on loved ones. Severe, or not, chronic or not, it matters little to the supporting family at the bedside of a patient. Fear, puzzlement, and apprehension are all experienced by the loved ones. Reading the case histories of Sarah and Patrick, one learns how their spouses also suffered many frightening experiences, but in spite of all that, they remained – obviously without second thought, hesitation or doubt. True to their marriage vows, they provided so much love, care and support. That was the shared experience among the three of us (Author: Epilogue)." ... Read more

Product Description
A First Step - Understanding Guillain-Barré Syndrome provides a fresh perspective on a devastating illness, and is a frightening story of a rarely talked about disease from the point of view of one in good health who was suddenly stricken with almost total paralysis. The book is comprised of two distinct parts: Part I, \'What Really Happened\', a more or less blow-by-blow account of the effect Guillain-Barré Syndrome had on the author and close family, from its surprise onset, through treatment and subsequent rehabilitation; Part II, \'In Dreams\', a vivid description of dreams and hallucinations experienced during seven months of Intensive Care. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars VERY INFORMATIVE
THIS BOOK WAS VERY INFORMATIVE ! IF YOU HAVE HAD ANY FORM OF GBS [GUILLAIN BARRE' SYNDROME] IT IS A MUST OR IF A FAMILY MEMBER HAS BEEN DIAGNOISED WITH GBS!

3-0 out of 5 stars Could have been much worse off.
I had to go through this as well, and what I would have given to just be paralyzed.

In a way I was, but I was paralyzed from pain. The main effect it had on me was the wrong signals being sent to my brain. The slightest breeze on my skin would make it feel like I was burning alive. The lightest touch of a sheet was like razors. In the end I fully recovered, with much love and support from my family.

I feel pity for anyone else who had to suffer this syndrome also, but it could have been much worse, and for many it was/is.

3-0 out of 5 stars My opinion...
As a survivor of Guillain Barre Syndrome, I personally did not care for this book.I realize that everyone is different, and perhaps I should pen my own account. My case was much worse than the author's, which may account for my disgruntle attitude.Sorry.

5-0 out of 5 stars Guillain-Barre' Syndrome : My Worst Nightmare
Byron Comp did a very good thing sharing his experience dealing with Gillian Barre. This book helped me to better understand what a good friend and a wonderful person is going through. He found out he has GBS just this year in June.He has been in the hospital for about 10 days and 70 days so far in the rehab hospital. He is still paralyzed but gaining a little ground each week. The last parts of the book are great it is good to understand the recovery part of this illness and that 95% of the people do recover. This book is a good read for anyone and it does give you a dose of appreciate what we have and we are all truly blessed.Someone out there is always having a worse day than we are having on our worst day...Nice job Byron and thanks.

5-0 out of 5 stars enlightning
This book really makes you think twice about the care you give to other people, and what kind of care you would recieve if you were in the same position.I couldn't put the book down.I finished it in one day.I cried through most of it.Even I didn't know what all he went through on a daily basis.I am very proud of the strides my DAD has made. ...
