Product Description
Guillain-Barré Syndrome causes the body's immune system to attack the peripheral nervous system, producing feelings of tingling and weakness that increase in intensity until the patient is almost totally paralyzed. Claiming thousands of new victims each year, GBS can strike anyone at any age, regardless of gender or ethnicity. Fortunately, most patients have a good recovery, but the pathway to this goal can be slow and frightening. Written by two experts in the field — one a GBS survivor himself — Guillain-Barré Syndrome addresses all aspects of the condition, including initial symptoms, diagnostic evaluation and criteria, general and illness-specific treatments, and typical outcomes. The book covers a wide range of issues, including pain without injury and other abnormal sensations unique to GBS; the rehabilitation process; workplace adjustment with incomplete recovery; sexual dysfunction; guidelines for caregivers; and much more. Written in laymen’s terms, this practical, reassuring book helps patients manage this puzzling illness. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Guillain-Barre Syndrome: From Diagnosis to Recovery
My 37 year old daughter contracted Guillain-Barre Syndrome at the end of July, 2009.She hadn't had a flu shot nor had she had a virus so it is really a mystery as to why she contracted it.This book has been very informative and showed me what to expect as she was recovering. She is still in the recovery period, in a wheelchair, but able to use her upper body nearly 100% and move her legs quite well.It is now February, 2010.Shejust has to gain the strength in her legs to be able to walk again.Books like this give you more of an understanding as to what GBS is about, or at least as far as they know.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful without being overwhelming
My five year old nephew has Guillain-Barre.It's very difficult to find material that deals with children and Guillain-Barre.There is a little bit in this book.I think it would be a great book to read for an adult with GB or adult caregiver.

Both my mother and I really like the fact that this book covers a lot of aspects of GB.There are some points where the medical detail was over my head but I was able to get the gist of it.It was nice to know that picking the leg up at the ankle is a common issue and usually one of the last things to come back.He will start learning to walk again in January which seemed strange to me because he can not pick up his feet on his own but now I know that's somewhat normal.

5-0 out of 5 stars Guillian Barre Syndrome
Excellent facts and representation of experience - since I personallyexperienced this disorder, and recovered 99%, I am confident in my assessment of book's content. It's good that the information is out there - so few people are even aware of the nature of this disorder!

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have for patients, doctors, and caregivers
Gillian-Barre Syndrome is a rare disease, so acurate, up to date resource materials about this are sore lacking. This book helps to fill the void.
Because this disease is rare, there is not a lot of research, and most doctors only rarely encounter a case in their medical career.Medical schools are still teaching out-dated information. Therefore, it is up to the patient and caregiver to stay informed. GBS patients should buy a copy for themselves, and one for their doctor.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read for GBS Patients/PCP/ICU Nurses
Until I was told I had GBS (Nov 2007), I had never heard of it.Once I read this book cover to cover, I gained an understanding of GBS, which I had been looking for and was unable to find in others. I felt as if someone had been following me around, writing down everything that happened the weeks before and the first two weeks I was in the hospital.

This book should be required reading for all PCP and ICU nurses that are caring for GBS patients. I believe it would give them the compassion they need along with the knowledge, as to what to do for their patients and how to handle situations with their GBS patients that may/will come up.

I have to thank those involved in writing this book, for giving me the information which I had been looking for, in layman terms and was unable to find. And for giving me the ability to look forward, for now I know, it will get better in time, given time.

I know that there is still much I must overcome to gain as much of a recovery as I can, however now I have the tools to make it through. ... Read more

Product Description
I assure you, though, there is nothing trite about coming down with Guillain-Barrè syndrome. For the person hit by it, it’s war and revolution wrapped in one: A catastrophe, an upheaval, a devastating blow.

But also an invaluable experience and a possibility for renewal.

I wouldn’t be what I am now, a man at peace with himself and the world, had I not come down with, and fought back from, this terrible ailment. But I don’t want to sound excessive. It isn’t terminal cancer at young age, or trauma-induced coma and vegetative state; but, as Joseph Heller said, it’s no laughing matter, either. The blessing about Guillain-Barrè syndrome—and I mean that with only a little bit of irony—is that it doesn’t affect the gray matter upstairs. You know it’s bad, but you also know it can be defeated, and the struggle to overcome it lends a tremendous meaning of truthfulness to the old saying: “That which does not kill you…” You know the rest. It can paralyze you completely, and, occasionally, do you in, but the road back or, as I imply in my title, the uphill struggle from the abyss is Herculean and character forming. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Up from the Abyss
I read this book 19 months after my husband got sick with Gullain-Barre syndrome. He is still trying to rehab. Reading this book helped me to understand that recovery takes longer than you think it should sometime. There is so little information. I was given one page explaining GBS at the onset of this syndrome. One page doesn't cover the months and years that it takes. That is why books written by the patient or family is so important.

A journey of personal redemption from the ravages of Guillain-Barrè syndrome...I have a good friend who is 68 who on June 13, 2005 learned what had caused him to lose the ability to move.It paralyzed him and it is GBS.I bought this book and 2 others to better understand what he has and how he might progress with his recovery. 4 out of 100,000 people get this GBS and these kinds of books are great to read and the endings are very good to re-read because all 3 books the people fully recovered and that is a blessing. This book is very good for anyone to read.Life is short and there are many bumps in the road...This GBS is a big ass bump that I hope to never encounter again... ... Read more

Product Description
Part one of A First Step - Understanding Guillain-Barré Syndrome is a true, blow-by-blow account of the Author's encounter, as a healthy Canadian businessman, with a rare and devastating disease, Guillain-Barré Syndrome (G.B.S. for short). It describes his seven-month long struggle for life in 'Intensive Care' after receiving a grim prognosis, and his subsequent dogged determination to overcome the effects of that disease.

The second part is devoted to short stories based on dreams and hallucinations experienced whilst he was in 'Intensive Care', which in themselves reveal something of what a patient was going through. They also serve to illustrate the narrow boundary between reality and the dream world, and which whilst making for entertaining reading, could possibly be the subject of further study.

Although the Author is a layperson, in medical terms, it is believed this book will be an important aid to medical professionals and care-givers, providing as it does, new insights and a unique perspective on the effects, not only of the disease, Guillain-Barré Syndrome, but also of the handling and care of any long-term intensive care patient, and their subsequent rehabilitation. For the curious, it will answer many questions. For G.B.S. patients and their families it should provide inspirational reading.

The foreword to the book has been written by Dr Frank Warshawski, MD, FRCPC, Director of Intensive Care, Rockyview General Hospital, Calgary. In addition to that prestigious involvement, the Author has been fortunate in receiving permission to use other material authored by exceptionally well qualified medical professionals, for which due credit is given in the 'Acknowledgements' section of the book, enabling him to produce not only an interesting publication, but an informative and educational one.

In short, a 'must read' and deserving of a place on any medical bookshelf. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I read this book when a member of my family got GBS while pregnant.
This book was such a good read when a family member experiences this rare disease, that not many have ever heard of.It helped me emotionally being able to accept the doctors who seemed to have few answers to our questions. It was the best book I read about GBS.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Darkness Is Not Dark
Suddenly thrust into the unforeseen grip of Guillian-Barre Syndrome (GBS), Regina Roth candidly writes about her husband's illness.

Their faith in Christ shines through the pages of the book lighting the way as they travel through a valley of darkness.

The author's words are spiked with love for her husband and gratitude for the creative kindnesses of others.

For the professional, patient, family or other caregiver, this book provides a case history of one man's personal encounter with GBS.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Book
As someone who suffers from Chronic GBS (CIDP) I highly recommend this book for medical professionals, patients with GBS/CIDP and also their family and friends.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiration and Comfort In Times of Trouble
This book is full of humor and heart! In a time of serious illness, when the outcome is unknown, we all tread new ground. This book actually maps that ground in the form of a personal diary. The painful feelings that arise--fear and anguish, helplessness and anger--are here, but along with them are wonderful humor and humility, faith and gratitude. I was drawn into the fast pace of this true story immediately. By the time I had finished I decided to buy it for anyone I know who has to deal with a devastating illness and needs inspiration!

5-0 out of 5 stars VERY INFORMATIVE
THIS BOOK WAS VERY INFORMATIVE ! IF YOU HAVE HAD ANY FORM OF GBS [GUILLAIN BARRE' SYNDROME] IT IS A MUST OR IF A FAMILY MEMBER HAS BEEN DIAGNOISED WITH GBS!

3-0 out of 5 stars Could have been much worse off.
I had to go through this as well, and what I would have given to just be paralyzed.

In a way I was, but I was paralyzed from pain. The main effect it had on me was the wrong signals being sent to my brain. The slightest breeze on my skin would make it feel like I was burning alive. The lightest touch of a sheet was like razors. In the end I fully recovered, with much love and support from my family.

I feel pity for anyone else who had to suffer this syndrome also, but it could have been much worse, and for many it was/is.

3-0 out of 5 stars My opinion...
As a survivor of Guillain Barre Syndrome, I personally did not care for this book.I realize that everyone is different, and perhaps I should pen my own account. My case was much worse than the author's, which may account for my disgruntle attitude.Sorry.

5-0 out of 5 stars Guillain-Barre' Syndrome : My Worst Nightmare
Byron Comp did a very good thing sharing his experience dealing with Gillian Barre. This book helped me to better understand what a good friend and a wonderful person is going through. He found out he has GBS just this year in June.He has been in the hospital for about 10 days and 70 days so far in the rehab hospital. He is still paralyzed but gaining a little ground each week. The last parts of the book are great it is good to understand the recovery part of this illness and that 95% of the people do recover. This book is a good read for anyone and it does give you a dose of appreciate what we have and we are all truly blessed.Someone out there is always having a worse day than we are having on our worst day...Nice job Byron and thanks.

5-0 out of 5 stars enlightning
This book really makes you think twice about the care you give to other people, and what kind of care you would recieve if you were in the same position.I couldn't put the book down.I finished it in one day.I cried through most of it.Even I didn't know what all he went through on a daily basis.I am very proud of the strides my DAD has made. ... Product Description
This specialized book is devoted solely to the subject of Guillain-Barre syndrome and inflammatory neuropathies. It describes the pathogenesis, clinical features, neurophysiology and treatment of Guillain-Barre syndrome, an acute paralyzing disorder usually due to inflammation and demyelination in the spinal roots and peripheral nerves. In clinical practice, the syndrome is an important cause of neuromuscular paralysis requiring artificial ventilation. The pathogenesis is interpreted in the light of experimental models of inflammatory neuropathy induced by antibody or T lymphocyte responses directed against myelin or purified myelin antigens. These autoimmune responses are triggered by infections with viruses, including the virus which causes AIDS. The pathology and immunology of Guillain-Barre syndrome are compared with chronic idiopathic demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy and inflammatory human neuropathies, such as in vasculitis and leprosy, as well as veterinary conditions such as Marek's Disease. ... Product Description
The Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS) or Landry-Guillain-Barre-Strohl syndrome, also known as post-infectious polyneuropathy or acute idiopathic polyneuritis, is an acute acquired, frequently severe, monophasic autoimmune illness of the peripheral nervous system (PNS). GBS manifests itself with the clinical picture characterised by gait disturbance, pain, weakness, rapidly ascending symmetric flaccid muscle paralysis, areflexia with distal predominance (involving lower motor neuron), sensory disturbance, variable autonomic involvement, and increased cerebrospinal fluid protein without pleocytosis . Although GBS had previously been viewed as a unitary disorder with variations, it is today considered as a group of syndromes with several distinctive variants or subtypes. The aim of this book is to describe and discuss this disease that is not exactly rare but is almost the only inflammatory polyneuropathy and the most frequent cause of acute flaccid paralysis in general medical practice. ... Autobiography - Michael J. Kiser had been living a healthy life with no restraints what so ever in his life, which was up until of May 2006, which at this time Michael J. Kiser's body decided to turn on it self. This is a true story that tells about Michael J. Kiser's own experience living with an Auto-Immune System Syndrome called, 'Guillain-Barre Syndrome / Acute Relapsing CIDP', (Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy). What is this Auto-Immune GBS / Acute Relapsing CIDP? This Syndrome is a cause of the Auto-Immune System reversing on itself to the point of attacking your body as if it was a threat to you causing the nerves to be attacked to a point where the Myelin Sheath that protects the nerves to be eaten. Which this stops your nerves from sending signals back and forth from the brain to control your muscles and of the feelings of the things, which you touch, are lost. If the Auto-Immune System is not reversed in time, this syndrome can indeed kill you, within a time of three to eight weeks. This book is to help shine some light to people that has no understanding what people like Michael J. Kiser ends up going through from this Syndrome. This book is also to help people that might end up going through this awful Syndrome and what to expect and for those that are going through this Syndrome. You might think that there is no light at the end of the tunnel as you are going through this. Nevertheless, there is and it will not be easy but you will heal from this, as you will see. ... Product Description
This up-to-date and comprehensive set of two CD-ROM discs provides a superb collection of official Federal government documents on the subject of Guillain-Barre Syndrome. Guillain-Barre syndrome is a rare disorder that causes your immune system to attack your peripheral nervous system (PNS). The PNS nerves connect your brain and spinal cord with the rest of your body. Damage to these nerves makes it hard for them to transmit signals. As a result, your muscles have trouble responding to your brain. No one knows what causes the syndrome. Sometimes it is triggered by an infection, surgery or a vaccination. The first symptom is usually weakness or a tingling feeling in your legs. The feeling can spread to your upper body. In severe cases, you become almost paralyzed. This is life-threatening. You might need a respirator to breathe. Symptoms usually worsen over a period of weeks, then stabilize. Most people recover. Recovery can take a few weeks to a few years. Treatment options during the symptom period include medicines or a procedure called plasma exchange. For patients, practical information is provided in clearly written patient education documents. For medical professionals, doctor reference tools and texts have detailed technical information and clinical background material. There is no other reference that is as fast, convenient, and portable - everything you need to know, from the federal sources you trust. This thoroughly researched collection presents vital information from many authoritative sources: Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Centers for Disease Control (CDC), National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the relevant institute for this disease, and others. In addition to the comprehensive disease-specific coverage, this disc set also includes our Medical Encyclopedia, a $19.95 value!
