5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Read!
Solomon's Porch is an excellent read.It details Ben and Rose and their journey dealing with Guillain-Barre' syndrome. It's a truly touching story for anyone who has had to overcome illness and the prejudice associated with it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Bittersweet Story of Pain and Love
In this warm, personal story of a devoted marriage, a tragic illness, and incredible perseverance, Jane Riley presents us with the full spectrum of good and evil. But it is not done through high drama, or in complicated philosophic terms. Rather, with a constrained writing style she shows us how it appears in our ordinary, everyday, lives: good friends and devious friends; doctors guilty of deplorable malpractice and callousness, and doctors moved by unswerving concern for their patients; churchgoers who run the gamut from cruelty, hypocrisy and selfishness, to those kindhearted souls that harken back to the early Christians who met at Solomon's Temple and shared compassion and love for one another. All of this is dealt with, fought with, and savoured, in this story of a loving wife-mother-and-caregiver's story, which is gently and beautifully written (with a wonderful knack for dialogue), and -- as several reviewers have already noted - very hard to put down.

5-0 out of 5 stars Against All Odds!
In this intriguing tale which almost reads like a medical mystery, Ms. Riley first introduces us to the characters through a series of "flashback-like" vignettes. We begin to know them...Ben and Rose...through these colorful portrayals that set the tone for the story to follow.

And what a story!Ben and Rose are approaching a time in their lives when they can enjoy themselves...perhaps even rest a bit.And then, seemingly out of nowhere, Ben is struck by a devastating illness. We first glimpse a hint of the troubles to come when Ben has unexplainable symptoms after a church concert. At first he is in denial...he had flu-like symptoms a short time before, and thinks he's just having after-effects.

Finally he is persuaded to seek medical attention, but that is only the beginning of their trials.Over a period of many weeks, they are shunted from one medical practitioner to another, with numerous tests, and nothing definitive to report. There is what appears to be a diagnosis and the beginning of a treatment plan, but Ben is not doing well.

Through Rose's persistence and with the help of various resource persons, and over another long period of time, they are finally granted a correct diagnosis:Guillain-Barre Syndrome.

In the days, weeks and months ahead, Ben and Rose are thoroughly tested, emotionally and physically, as they struggle to overcome the illness that has literally stopped them in their tracks.

It is a long time before they can say that Ben is out of the woods---in fact, even more troublesome days are ahead as they face the ramifications of the disease.Rehabilitation and numerous barriers to recovery:the very real and practical obstacles, such as simply moving from one place to another; making accommodations in their home and in their car; but worst of all...prejudice, even from church members.Truly a Job-like fate has fallen upon them---Until, finally, a triumphant ending is in sight.

This is truly a love story, with the almost insurmountable odds of recovery only one of many such tests they must pass.

A remarkable story, this tale leaves the reader shouting "hurray!" at every triumphant moment.

5-0 out of 5 stars I Couldn't Put This Book Down
Having enjoyed reading The Collard Patch by Cheatham and Elliott, I started checking around to see if they had published other things.I found a novel by Cheatham. It is called Solomon's Porch.

She published it with a pen name, Jane Riley.I didn't have to read much to see why she used a pen name. Some of the people in there remind me of the kinds of people I know.

Some of the things that happened to the people in this book are a lot like stuff in my life.It tells about taking care of somebody when you feel you can't put another foot in front of you and how you have to keep smiling and trying. It shows what happens when you don't leave time for yourself.I've been there.

It's an odd book in that it reads like a journal or a newspaper, but it is in the third person-he and she instead of I.Riley, or Cheatham, backs off and takes an objective look at the lives of the people in the book.

When I started reading it, I couldn't stop.It cost me a night's sleep, but what I learned and the reading pleasure I got made it worth not sleeping.I'd recommend this book to anyone who is taking care of a sick person or someone with a handicap.

5-0 out of 5 stars Solomon's Porch: The Story of Ben and Rose by Jane Riley
Ben and Rose face a long and trying battle with Ben's Guillan-Barre Syndrome. Jane Riley's sensitive yet constrained writing style reveal the strength and foibles of the characters, health care institutions and churches with no rancor. It is a book that I was not able to put down. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars What is magic?
Will and Pete are very close teenage brothers, but one day Will is struck down by a strange paralyzing illness. Will this illness ultimately separate the brothers, or will they endure through it?The two boys soon begin a game of 'masks,' which they played long ago before they even went to school.Putting on the animal masks, which their anthropologist father has collected from around the world, the boys for a while become the animal in their imagination. Is this game helpful to Will or is it harmful? Are the masks really magic, as the primitive peoples who made them believe? What sinister thing happened in the past and how does this event relate to the game? This is a book about the role which both the mind and social relationships play in healing. It is also a book about magic, telepathy and the strange twists of fate that life can play.

Product Description
A patient's personal view of long term care.Seen through the eyes of a patient totally paralyzed with Guillain-Barré syndrome, this moving book takes you through the psychological and physical pain of an eleven month hospital stay. BED NUMBER TEN reads like a compelling novel, but is entirely factual. You will meet:The ICU staff who learned to communicate with the paralyzed woman - and those who did not bother. The physicians whose visits left her baffled about her own case. The staff and physicians who spoke to her and others who did not recognize her presence. The nurse who tucked Sue tightly under the covers, unaware that she was soaking with perspiration. The nurse who took the time to feed her drop by drop, as she slowly learned how to swallow again. The physical therapist who could read her eyes and spurred her on to move again as if the battle were his own.In these pages, which reveal the caring, the heroism, and the insensitivity sometimes found in the health care fields, you may even meet people you know. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Absolute must read for all!!!
This book was so enlightening regarding the care rendered in hospitals. This is a must read for those with family members hospitalized, but more importantly it is a must read for those that are providing care, nurses, medical techinicians, nurse's aids/assistants, physicians, basically anyone in the healthcare field!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
I was assigned to read this book for my Nursing class. This book is a must read.It gives the reader, who is new to the health care field, a vivid description of the life of a patient in the ICU.

I hope that no one has to go through torment and uncaring behavior like Sue experienced.

3-0 out of 5 stars Mostly about her personal life not GBS...
Thia book was not what I expected. I have GBS and was looking for a book about it...there are so few. This book was more about her personal life than GBS...don't waste your money if you want tolearn more about GBS.

1-0 out of 5 stars Bed Number Ten
I read the entire book and also know the author. The book is filled with extreme self-pity and a tremendous lack of appreciation for the medical community. Some of the things in the book cannot be refuted by the "guilty parties" because they have died.Self-righteous indignation is the major theme of the book. Many of the nurses and doctors who cared for this author will affirm strongly that she received excellent care. It is a very trying disease. I do not recommend the book for anyone except hospital doctors and nurses who do not understand completely that
"Hell hath no fury...."My God bless the medical staff who lived through the ordeal.

However, a lot of the issues talked about are still relevant and applicable to our practice today. I recommend this book to anyone working in health care! ... Read more
