Product Description
Today, approximately one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer—and many will be under the age of fifty. There are currently more than 250,000 breast cancer survivors in the United States who are just forty-five years old or younger. They are daughters, wives, mothers, sisters, and friends, whose illness and subsequent treatment affect entire families and communities. And they face issues wholly unique to their age group.

A collaborative effort by six young breast cancer survivors, Just a Lump in the Road … shares the kind of candid information, insight, and inspiration that only girlfriends who have “been there” can deliver. Each story is as diverse as the women themselves, and modesty is hurled aside as they discuss dating and mastectomies, children and mortality, and treatment and hair loss. Together with the doctors and healthcare professionals who continue to care for them, the women also provide an overview of the many types of breast cancer treatments now available.

Giving a much-needed voice to the young survivor, Just a Lump in the Road … offers validation, comfort, and encouragement for not only the thousands of young women battling breast cancer, but also their spouses, bosses, children, babysitters, friends, boyfriends, and significant others yet to come. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very Informative and helpful -quick read!
Working in an oncology office, I recently met a patient diagnosed with breast cancer, who "inspired" me to learn more.I immediately logged on and found this book, in hopes of reading it, and then passing along to several of our patients diagnosed with breast cancer.I read it in one night and found it to be very helpful, not only to the patient, but for me as someone who works with these women daily-an "on-looker".The experiences shared are universal, and tend to "normalize" the fears thatmany of our patients have shared with me. The fears are justified- and although a traumatic diagnosis, this book certainly offers support and compassion through it's stories.

5-0 out of 5 stars Girl power that helps others!!
JUST a LUMP IN THE ROAD ...: Reflections of young breast cancer survivors

This book is factual and real, I imagine all those reading it would connect with one or more women directly in the various stories.
Be you single women, moms or career people this book offers life slices of admirable women who give hope to those facing breast cancer. Be not afraid! Thanks girlfriends!

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Book, Amazing Women
Amazing book, amazing women! Ths book is a must have for anyone beginning this scary journey, as well as anyone traveling with them. These women share valuable information, insight and hindsight that only survivors can provide. Each "sister" tells her own experience with style and honesty. You may relate to one more than the other, but you will love them all. I laughed, I cried, I cheered.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not just for those WITH cancer
This book is not just for the person who has cancer but for those dealing with a loved one who has it. I bought this book for my mother who was having a rough time facing the fact. Not only did it help her feel ( and Look) so much better but after reading it myself I feel so much better about it. If cancer is affecting your life in any way i say BUY THIS BOOK.

In compiling my hair information books my goal was to amass both informative and useful information.

Product Description

Hair transplantation is in demand worldwide, but because Asian hair tends to be more sparse and coarse than Caucasian hair, transplantation procedures need to be adapted to Asian patients. This book, exclusively devoted to Asian hair, is a complete and comprehensive text written by a group of authors sharing their experience in their specialized fields of hair restoration. Included are many practical tips as well as chapters on regional transplantation such as eyebrows, eyelashes, sideburns, beards, and mustaches, in addition to the usual scalp hair restoration. With its many illustrations, the book gives readers a complete knowledge of hair restoration surgery and provides a quick, easy-to-use reference on Asian hair and the differences in patients' demands. With an influx of new physicians in this challenging field of medicine, further education and training are imperative and must be available to provide a high standard of medical practice. This compilation meets that objective and ultimately makes the valuable contribution of restoring patients' self-confidence.

Excerpt:

Boost your self-confidence despite hair loss

Many people are confident in handling themselves in front of other people because they are satisfied with the way they look. But for people who are experiencing hair loss, being confident in front of others can be a difficult thing. This is because they cannot help but think that the people they are dealing with only focus on their falling crown of glory and not on what they are saying.

While it's true that hair loss can greatly affect one's overall physical appearance, this is not enough reason to lose self-confidence totally. If you are one of those persons who are slowly losing their self-confidence due to hair loss, one of the best things that can be done is learning how to cope with it....

5-0 out of 5 stars It WORKS!!
First, I am the type of person that nothing ever works on me...not even prescription drugs.
I either get a reaction or doesn't work as designed or it simply doesn't work.
This isn't a slam against the industry, as there are alot of good drugs doing alot of good for alot of people. I seem to be a person who falls into the small print.

So, I decided to take an active role in the management of my health.

I purchased this book to find a formula for topical pain gel/lotion/cream.
Though the ingredients can be expensive, it beats the cost of injections for pain and the common side-effects.

I made the exact mixture, applied it to my lower back and felt immediate relief...for days.

I gave a sample to my skeptical-Mom and she used it on her hands and knees (she has osteo-arthritis).
She, too, had immediate relief that lasted for days.
She was AMAZED!

Even though she gets knee injections (with some success) a couple of times of year...the effects no longer last until her next scheduled injection.

I gave some to my friend, who has heel spurs...yep, worked for him, too (though not as much).
Try it for yourself.
Note: Book included links for further reading/research which are very, very technical.
I haven't tried any of the other formulas.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book
Stephen Martin was a great man.Sadly he passed away a few months ago.I have a background in the sciences, and I can attest that this man knew what he was writing about. He had a PhD from Berkeley in immunology, I believe, and ran a website that looked at recent medical research concerning cancer, infectious disease, MS, heart disease, HIV and a host of other serious medical maladies, and applied the knowledge listed there with treatments available without a prescription, or, on occasion, with prescription medication that was widely available and generally reasonably priced.

There was no one else like Dr. Martin. He knew that many people suffer from serious diseases, and just couldn't wait for the pharmaceutical industry to slowly push drugs through clinical trials. There might not be enough time.

Did he cure anyone?I don't know, but I do know that he provided hope, and more than a few people believed his approach was medically valid.

He never made much money from his efforts, and that's a shame. When he passed away, the patient community lost one of its biggest advocates and best source of cutting-edge research.

He will be greatly missed. This book is one of the last things he has left us.Because of that, it's a treasure.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good book if over priced
This book provided a wonderful recipe for topical Naproxen that I use on a regular basis. The information in it seems to be good information. If I have any complaints it is due to the expense of the book.I would imagine that the low volume per unit publishing costs for such a small run, even with such a small book (< 30 pages) are pretty bad.But even with that, this book is way over priced. That is the reason I gave three stars instead of five. The publisher obviously took "whatever the market can bear" to the hilt.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent results
I have been using topical caffeine, carnatine melatonin and green tea extract for my male pattern baldness and senile alapecia as recommended by Dr. Martin in this book. I am 69 years old and I've been battling this problem for the past 10 years or more. My results with Dr. Martin's recommendation have been excellent. After four months, my hair is much thicker. I plan to use these products indefinitely since I am very fond of my hair and determined to keep it. I had a compounding pharmacist make these products for me.

I used Minoxidil for about a year but had to stop it because I became allergic to it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pain Relief for Pennies
I'm a nutritionist, and this quickly became one of the most important books in my library!I've used the recipes in the book to help friends and family members who are in pain, along with using it on myself, and it works *fabulously* well!!!

The problem with over-the-counter NSAIDs (Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs) like aspirin, Naproxen (Aleve) and Ibuprofen (Advil) is that with regular use, they often cause gastrointestinal bleeding, ulcerations, and/or perforations (with or without pain). If you were able to apply the above NSAIDs topically, you could totally avoid that problem ... which is exactly what I did when I made the pain-relief recipes in this book ... for just pennies!!!

I often tell my clients that whethere it's their nutrition or diet, "one size does not fit all."The same holds true for pain relief. What's incredibly cool about this book is that there are a *number* of approaches/solutions/recipes that can be tried. So if one recipe doesn't work to your liking, either try a different one or try adjusting the ingredient amounts. As an example, I found I got better (faster) pain relief when I increased the amount of Naproxen in the recipe.

Analgesic (pain relief) formulas are only one part of what is covered in the book. There are also some excellent recipes for men (and WOMEN!) suffering from hair loss, cold sores, and genital herpes.

The book is only about 38 pages long, but don't let that fool you.At 30 bucks, it's a steal!!!

When you're making pain relief formulas for yourself, please consider making extra and passing it out to friends and family who suffer from chronic pain.I can think of no greater gift or act of humanity. And if you find value in this book, consider supporting the site and man responsible for writing the book ... Stephen Martin and [...] ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars How I stopped hair loss
This is not an actual review, because I haven't read the book. I just wanted to share a hair loss recipe with you good people - the one that helped me.

I am a woman, 32 years old. I have had my hair falling out at above average rate since puberty. For a woman, a number of hairs falling out shouldn't be more than 70 per day. I would say that for me it was probably around 200. I was used to seeing bunches of hairs in the sink after washing it, on the pillow, on clothes. Then, few months ago, few factors (hairdresser made a horrible mistake, I made serious changes in my diet and was under a lot of stress) added up and for the next three months I was losing hair at the rate 500 (very roughly - I didn't actually count, but every time I ran fingers through my hair, I would have hairs in my hand). I thought I would end up bald. Then, I found a recipe on the Internet (bless it), and after using it every day, I can testify that it really works! Within the first month, the hair loss returned to normal (what was normal for me - maybe 200 hairs a day), and within the second month, my hair loss became less than average - I would say less than 50 hairs a day! The sink is almost empty after washing hair. I actually solved the problem I have been having my whole adult life.

The recipe:
1 1/2 cup of nettle
1/2 cup chopped onion
Put in a container, add enough alcohol to cover. After a few days (or more), strain and use liquid to massage scalp once a day.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to understand
I have read a few books on hair loss and I must say that this one was the easiest to read by far. It uses basic medical terms and is clearly written for someone who is new to hair loss and wanting to find a solution. If you are looking for facts is an easy-to-read format, then this book is for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read
Bald as a Bean: The Experience of Sudden Hair Loss is at the top of my must read list. The author, Nancy Parsons, draws the reader into a world turned upside down when she is diagnosed with the disease, alopecia areata totalis universalis. (total hair loss over the entire body)

Nancy shares her intensive and sometimes agonizing physical and spiritual struggle when faced with this disease. From the initial shock of finding large clumps of hair on the shower floor, to the overwhelming diagnosis, Nancy chronicles the medical and holistic treatments, as well as the emotional and physical obstacles that she fights to overcome.

By revealing her most intimate thoughts, Nancy eloquently affirms the statement,
"Although alopecia areata is not life threatening, it is most certainly life altering."
We become aware of how much society values hair, and when one loses it, the emotional loss is as significant as the physical loss.

One notable theme throughout the book is that of our natural world, particularly the change of seasons. Loss and rebirth in nature entwines itself with Nancy's physical and spiritual being, and with that comes inspirational hope.

How others react to Nancy's hair loss shapes her internal struggle. Not only do her present interactions with others affect her, but her childhood experiences with her hair are discussed. Through comical reflections we see how the importance of hair is instilled in all of us at a very young age. Nancy's humor is an important defense against this disease. We see this humor when she talks about her wigs affectionately known as "the girls."

A disturbing statistic about alopecia areata is revealed. One study indicated that "forty eight percent of alopecians had considered suicide."By sharing such a personal struggle, Nancy shows us that through perseverance and self reflection, one can find the strength to live with the disease. The journey of shock, denial, fear, anger, and depression, is a journey worth taking.

Not only do I recommend Bald as a Bean, The Experience of Sudden Hair Loss to those suffering from alopecia or hair loss due to a treatment such as chemotherapy, but as well, to those who enjoy reading true stories about the triumph of the human spirit.

You notice your hair “might” be thinning. Maybe someone said something to you about your looking different or (gasp) balding. Maybe someone looked at you differently, or you think they did because of your hair loss.
Maybe it was because of one or both parents? Maybe it was because of your shampoo? Your diet?
You don’t know for sure. So you change your hairstyle, combing the longer, remaining strands over the thinning areas. You switch shampoos. And you don a hat. Or do hats increase the rate of hair loss?
You’re not sure. So you shop for alternate solutions – just in case. You sample various medicated shampoos, conditioners and scalp tools. But they don’t work, & in the meantime, you’re out not only more hair but patience and money.
Late-night TV offers infomercials about “tried-and-true” methods of hair replacement with high-priced but supposedly professional tonics and message gadgets. So you rush to the phone and order yours.
However, these “funky” purchases turn into “frustration” garbage because they don’t work. So now you’re out more money, patience and probably more hair.
Well, look no more. Take root here and delve into the latest hair loss prevention research. Find solutions that work for you, solutions in your budget range. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Necessary Read
If you have any form of hair loss, this is a helpful book.It was written in 1992, and she made sure that she didn't cover medical treatments so that it wouldn't be out of date.

Instead, it deals a lot with the emotional and psychological issues that women deal with when they have a form of hairloss. It includes men, somewhat, but not much. But it's information is valuable for people with all types of hair loss, which is nice.It does lean heavy on the side of Alopecia areata as the author has alopecia totalis.

I borrowed the book from the library, but I will be buying a copy as it is a valuable reference for the emotional aspect of this dreaded disease.
