5-0 out of 5 stars Time to learn your grammar!
These books are so good at helping kids learn the parts of speech. They give so many clear examples of sentences, with the specific part of speech in a different color so everyone will notice it. I used these in a classroom during english class and they all loved it. A+ to this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars All Primary Teachers Could Use This Book!
As a teacher of third graders, I've used this book and "A MINK, A FINK, A SKATING RINK: WHAT IS A NOUN?" to teach and delight my students, and to take some of the tedium out of parts of speech. Within a day or so of introducing these books, all 27 of my group knew the difference between the major parts of speech. We found out that Mr. Cleary has a website, and I printed out some word-building worksheets off it for free, and a took away a couple of suggestions on how integrate teaching nouns with a fun art project, called the noun quilt, in which each letter of the alphabet has a noun, as in B, BOOT, C, CAT and the students draw the item and eventually it becomes this big old paper quilt full of nouns. His publisher assures me that TO ROOT, TO TOOT, TO PARACHUTE: WHAT IS A VERB? will be in soon, and it's a no-brainer that I'll get that as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hairy, Scary is anything but Ordinary!
This is a great book. It's a neat tool to teach with, and also an interesting trip through the world of adjectives. I think Brian P. Cleary may well be on his way to that rarefied place in children's literature occupied by those manic, witty rhymers Jack Prelutsky and Shel Silverstein. I like how the adjectives are colored to stand out more, and how the book uses language and words that stretch the young reader and never talks down to them. I originally got hooked on the pun series he did with Rick Dupre (illustrator) a few years back, which includes "It Looks a Lot Like Reindeer," and was delighted to see that he's not neglecting the first, second and third graders! Educational, but really hip and a lot of fun, I just loved it and can't wait to buy A Mink, a Fink, A Skating Rink: What is a Noun? ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars SO cute!
We bought this book with "That's Not My Tractor" by the same author to entertain our two-year-old on a trip. We have all enjoyed the darling illustrations and fun textures. It is one of those books that we read most frequently and that his friends pull out during play time. We plan on collecting more of this series for sure!

4-0 out of 5 stars The first "Hairy Maclary" book
This is the first of the "Hairy Maclary" books. And while it's not the best "Hairy Maclary" book (my favorites are HAIRY MACLARY'S RUMPUS AT THE VET, HAIRY MACLARY'S CATERWAUL CAPER, and SLINKY MALINKI), it's an essential "Hairy Maclary" book; it's the one where all the major characters are introduced. In fact, that's pretty much all the book is, an extremely entertaining introduction--and that's not a bad thing at all! We meet among others, Harry Maclary "from Donaldson's Dairy" (some sort of terrier), Bottomley Potts "covered in spots" (dalmation), and Muffin McLay "like a bundle of hay" (English sheepdog). Once the dogs are all introduced, they head to town where they run into Scarface Claw, "the toughest Tom in town", who frightens them all away. My son, who is two and a half, really loves this book. He is always on alert for Schnitzel von Krumms (dachschunds) and Muffin McLays when we go out for walks. Also, we've been inspired from time to time to make up our own rhymes about these dogs. Bitzer Maloney, for example, "loves to eat baloney". And Hercules Morse "eats roast beef, of course". It's hard not to love a book that can do all that for you!

5-0 out of 5 stars You'll love it too...
Kids love this "building" story - Hairy Macleary from Donaldson's Dairy (a tangley little black dog) goes for a walk, and is gradually joined by lots of other dogs with impossible rhyming names. The dogs increase until Disaster! - they meet Scarface Claw, the toughest tomcat in town. (A screetchy meow is necessary at this point.)

Lynley Dodd has a wonderful tumpity-tum rhythm throughout the book that makes it great fun to read. It also makes a good flannelboard for storytimes (not too many pieces to make, either).

The only caveat is that if you buy this book you will be made to read it over and over - although it's fun to try and remember all of the dogs' names: Schnitzel Von Krum (with a *very* low tum), Bottomley Potts (all covered in spots), Hercules Morse (as big as a horse)...

Ignore the editorial reviews above - they relate to "Hairy Macleary : rumpus at the vet" and "Dragon in a wagon"

As an expat New Zealander now living in the US I am delighted to finally be able to get these books here.
I have been reading them to kids for 15 years and now have a son of my own and he already has the entire collection of Hairy Maclary related books (14 and Counting....)
This is one of my all time favourite books. Every child I have read or given these to has become addicted to that scruffy black dog. His is an everyday New Zealand kind of life. The illustrations are typical NZ scenery, great for those who have been there and remember fondly the backdrop to these great tales.
Lynley Dodd has also written several other great kids books, so check her out on the web. The other reviews tell you how great the book is, I wanted to let you know that if you love this book there are many more to discover. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars ADORABLE!
Hairy Maclary is given a bone from his friend in town... watch with delight as he outsmarts his good buddies so he can have his bone ALL to himself to enjoy. Watch his body language as he prances down the street, strutting confidently but at the same time worried he is going to have to share his tasty bone with his entourage of friends, Shnitzel von Krumm with a very low tum, Hercules Morse as big as a horse, Muffin McLay like a bundle of hay, Bottomly Potts covered in Spots, Bitzer Maloney all skinny and bony...sometimes the best things in life are best shared with friends but sometimes are better yet when we are alone. You will find him adorable. You and your kids will just love him unconditionally because he is clever and cute. A happy feel good read... the rhyming text and pictures are just perfect.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hairy Maclary rocks !
Hairy Maclary's Bone is our favourite Hairy Maclary book but we love all of them ! My 3 year old son asks for them over and over again . The descriptions are perfect and all the books are so fast moving that they can entertain even the shortest of attention spans !! Enjoy !

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful Hairy Maclary adventure
Another in the Hairy Maclary series. I have almost every book that Lynley Dodd has published, and my three year old adores them all. Hairy Maclary waits patiently at the butcher shop for his bone, on his way home he is joined by his canine friends, all of who want his bone. Hairy comes up with sneaky ways to rid himself of his followers. All children that love dogs will love this book. A great dog, a great read! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Delightful
This is a delightful book, the language is great and the pictures wonderful. Most of Lynley Dodd's regular characters such as Slinki Malinki and Scarface Claw make an appearance as Hairy Maclary bounces along through the pages in a boisterous mood. I love reading this one to my three year old niece. The words have a real rhythm to them and the story has just enough suspense to keep little ones interested. I have not yet read a Lynley Dodd book that I don't like - but this one is a real favourite!

5-0 out of 5 stars Like all Lynley Dodd - great
We've been reading this, the hairy MacLary and other Lynley Dodd books for 5 years now....started when my son was about 18 months, and still going strong! There is as much in the language for a 6 year old starting to read on their own as for the shared experience with younger children.

Lynley Dodd and Margaret Mahy MUST be New Zealand National Treasures.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hairy Maclary's Caterwaul Caper
I'm very sad that the Hairy Maclary books are no longer available in paperback. Our family has 3 Hairy Maclary paperbacks and would like to purchase more. We LOVE the books. The stories are great and the pictures are beautiful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Caterwaul together!
Our 3 children have loved this book with all the different dogs and the sounds they make. One child makes the yowling cat sound and I do the dogs. They occasionally join in and it can become very entertaining. It just depends on how mellow or raucous you want to be. The story is simple but cute and the rhyming is creative and catchy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful sound effects
Before even thinking about reading this one aloud, grab a really big glass of water. All the dogs from the first Hairy Macleary are back and making all sorts of barks, and then there's the sound that echoes around...

If you haven't read any Hairy Macleary yet (and why not!!?), they are great read-aloud stories with plenty of tumpity rhythm and rhymes. (Not to say that you can't secretly grab one and read it quietly, too.) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars WHEN hippo was hairy, when lion could fly, when elephant was
We bought three book by nick greaves while travel in south Africa. We buy books for our three grandchildren( age 4,6,8) while travelling in South Africa last year. We have given them so many books through the years from around the world. They love these books so much. First the parents read to them, every night now the oldest reads to the younger ones. I wish the author writes more books for children.

5-0 out of 5 stars Kids Love It!
My 9-year old son came home from school today very excited about this book, which his teacher had started reading to the class. He took out his wallet, counted his money, and asked, "Can we go on line and buy this book right now? I have enough of my own money to buy it." This is enough proof for me that kids love it.

5-0 out of 5 stars More then a children book
The sub-title "And other tales from Africa" seems to suggest that this book was written for children, but it is fun to read for adults as well. Nick Greaves tells stories, tales, fables and legends from the African tribes about different animals and after each section gives facts about them. By doing this especially for tourists the book gives a general idea of the wildlife one might come across while traveling in Africa and furthermore the book supplies the not native speaker with useful vocabulary. The illustrations of Rod Clement are just as good as photos, sometimes even better, because good close-ups of mainly the small and nocturnal animals are quite rare. "When Hippo Was Hairy" was followed up by "When Lion Could Fly", which is highly recommendable, too. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A DOGGY DIS-OBEDIENCE CLASS
.

Wherever Hairy goes, chaos follows.

For all of us who know and love Hairy he is not a dog to be kept on a leash.

Even though he is pint-sized he is a natural leader, particularly when there are ducks to chase.

One of the tricks in Lynley's book is to look for pages where we see only a small part of the dog or see them in silhouette and try to figure out who it is. Hairy eventually has 8 of his doggy friends chasing along behind him.

These books are at their best when read aloud. The rhythm, rhymes and tempo are a lot of fun. The story carries us along to an exciting and humorous climax, even when you've read the book (or heard the story) many, many times.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Harry Maclary books capture "dogginess"
I discovered the Hairy Maclary books a couple of weeks ago. Talk about EUREKA! I can't believe they aren't bestsellers in the US. They are just wonderful. My toddler loves them. Hairy Maclary is a little black dog "from Donaldson's Dairy" who has all sorts of cleverly-named dog friends, like Bottomley Potts "all covered in spots" (a dalmation), Schnitzel von Krumm "with a very low tum" (a dachshund), and Muffin McLay "like a bundle of hay" (an English sheepdog). They are introduced in Linley Dodd's first book, HAIRY MACLARY FROM DONALDSON'S DAIRY, and make various guest appearances in the other books. In HARRY MACLARY, SIT we see a dog obedience class taking place in a park. Or, as Linley Dodd puts it, "A fidget of dogs lined up on the grass for the Kennel Club's Special Obedience Class." We then have Hairy Maclary, who is feeling "breezily bad, jittery, skittery, mischievous, mad," run off. The other dogs chase him--each in his or her own particular way, rhyme permitting. For example, Bottomly Potts gets his leader "tangled up in knots". In the end, everyone ends up in the lake. The rhyming text is outstanding. (Think of a wordier, more literary Jeff Moss or Shel Silverstein.) But mention must also be made of the illustrations. They are outstanding, too. They capture "dogginess"--the scratching, sniffing, panting, lunging, and so forth. I think that the whole of these books is greater than the sum of their parts, so you may have to read a few before you develop a real affection for them. Given that, would it be too much to hope that they be released in paperback!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Quartet of Great Theatrical Extremes
Eugene O'Neill (1888-1953) is generally considered the greatest American playwright of the 20th Century. Today casual readers and playgoers are most likely to know his work through two plays written in the early 1940s: the celebrated The Iceman Cometh and the Pulitzer Prize-winning Long Day's Journey Into Night. But the great bulk of O'Neill's work was done between about 1914 and 1933--and although the power of his later work is undeniable, it was actually his earlier work that led to his 1936 Nobel Prize for Literature.

With an insightful introduction by A.R. Gurney, author of such playscripts as The Dining Room, this reasonably-priced volume presents four of O'Neill's earliest successes, including two Pulitzer Prize winners. Each of the four is remarkable in its own way, and taken together they offer a memorable overview of the ideas, themes, and theatrical concepts that O'Neill would continue to expand upon throughout the rest of his career.

The two "realistic" dramas of the quartet took the Pulitzer Prize: Beyond the Horizon, first staged in 1920, and Anna Christie, first staged in 1921. But although the plays are realistic in tone, it would be a mistake to consider them realistic in ultimate quality--for it is here that O'Neill begins to grapple with themes of fate, of inevitability that critics would tag as "naturalistic."

Beyond the Horizon offers the tale of two brothers who separate and experience a role reversal of sorts when one marries the love of his life--only to find bitterness, disillusionment, and disappointment. Anna Christie, a play which is still frequently revived, offers the tale of a young prostitute who attempts her past behind by returning to her father--only to find herself caught up in another but equally harsh fate. Both plays are extremely powerful and both offer O'Neill's richness of theme and concept and both had extremely positive critical and popular support when they debuted; both, however, are also deeply flawed works with final acts that do not quite manage to bring O'Neill's ideas to a completely satisfactory conclusion.

It is really in the two remaining plays that O'Neill first finds complete artistic success, plays which are not in the least realistic and which critics would describe as expressionistic. Whatever word is used, again O'Neill plays with the same sense of inevitability, the same idea that each person is his own prisoner, a prisoner who can only be released from his cage by death.

First staged slightly before Beyond the Horizon in 1920, The Emperor Jones proved extremely startling in form. The play presents the tale of "Emperor" Jones, a black man of great physical power but limited insight who escapes from racially repressive America to an island where he bullies his way to the throne. But ironically, instead of working to create a society that is less repressive, he merely repeats what he has learned and evolves into an abusive ruler. When his subjects rebel, he makes a marathon run through the jungle to escape ... only to find his past transgressions rising before him as the pursuing drums draw ever closer. Like Anna Christie, The Emperor Jones remains one of O'Neill's most frequently staged early works.

O'Neill's 1922 The Hairy Ape is only slightly less successful than The Emperor Jones, and again finds O'Neill working concepts of personal inevitability into an expressionistic form; indeed, it is easily the single most expressionistic play of O'Neill's entire output. It presents the story of Yank, a burly lowbrow stoker who works in the flaming hell of an ocean liner's boiler room. Proud of his work and of himself, Yank is outraged when he is insulted by a society woman as a "hairy ape"--and goes in search of the newly discovered society that rejects him. But the instant Yank steps outside his boiler room he falls victim to repeated rejection, and like the Emperor Jones he pays the ultimate price for rattling the bars of his personal prison. Difficult to cast and extremely hard to stage, for all its power The Hairy Ape is rarely revived today.

Although all four plays, flaws and all, are remarkably fine and extremely important in the development of 20th century theatre, I do not normally recommend any O'Neill script to the casual reader. On the page, his dialogue and constructions have an unnatural quality that makes for difficult reading, and although he is usually very specific in scenic and business description it is often very difficult to imagine how the play performs before an audience. Consequently, readers without a significant background in theatre are likely to find his works challenging to read--but even so it is a challenge worth the effort, and for any one serious about theatre arts all four of these plays are essentials.

4-0 out of 5 stars Save on winter apparel--grow hair?!
Koren, creator of hairy cartoons for the New Yorker and other magazines, has turned his talents to the younger set with a story about one Hairy Harry, who decides he wants to be very, very hairy--hairier than anyone else. Harry notes the advantages of shagginess:

*Your dog can look like he's a part of you.
*You can hide all your favorite things on your body.
*You can forgo winter apparel.

Alas, hairiness has one distinct drawback. Will Harry remain very hairy or will he end up in the barber's chair?

This is a fun story and book with Koren's unique, quirky illustrations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully playful fuzziness.
Edward Koren's signature style is in full fuzzy flower -- and in full color -- in this wonderfully playful exploration of pros and cons. The having of lots of hair gives Harry (a boy/monster) many unusual, unlikely perks. Koren explores these with a humor that, although it may be recognizable to his New Yorker fans, is sweetly silly and thought-provoking enough to engage kids - ultimately perhaps the tougher critics. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Another winner
If you are familiar with hairy Maclary (from Donaldson's Dairy) you will understand what havoc could be caused when our irascible terrier visits the cat show.

Not my favourite of the series (see reviews of Slinky Malinki Open The Door and Caterwaul Caper), but fun nevertheless.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book! I read it to my one year old,who also likes it.
Hairly Maclary is delightful! I would like more of his books. My 15-month old enjoys hearing of his antics with the cat show, and I regularly read it to her at naptime and bedtime. The rhymes comfort her and the pictures capture her attention. Lynley Dodd has done well. I will read this book to my twin daughters when they're a little older (they are seven weeks old) and I'm sure Hairy Maclary will be a big hit then ... Read more

Kevin Kim is a twisted genius. For instance: Until recently, he had a pet centipede. He trained it to do his taxes and eat only crumbs. It has since expired. But he probably still snuggles with it anyway.

Anyway, this is the BEST TOILET READING MATERIAL, EVER. Buy it. You'll die squirting.

5-0 out of 5 stars sick, sick, sick
OK I laughed my fool head off. This is DEFINATELY bathroom reading of the highest odor.

Highlights of this nasty book:

*Dr. Stephen doCarmo's foreword (ok, so that wasn't written by Kevin Kim, but it's funny as hell).
*The preface - an interview w/Barbara Walters. Who knew Baba Wawa was soooooo naughty? "Anus-tongue", anyone?
*really screwed-up haiku, some of it stealing from Georges Perec's idea of avoiding the letter E
*that Throbbing Prom story
*that story about Satan and the little boy in hell
*the story about the roasted Thanksgiving turkey that comes to life
*ANY of the stories involving Mr. Spock or Star Wars characters, those are some cruel parodies

OK some of the poetry was strange, I admit, and I wasn't sure how to relate. But some of it was just a nasty treat to read, like "Valentine Valediction", which is an acrostic poem.

This guy has a sick mind and probably too much time on his hands. *Is* he a guy? Can we know for sure?

Kim's no Shakespeare, but take Scary Spasms on its own terms and it's damn funny. Am recommending this to friends looking for a cheap (but often literate, go figure) laugh.

5-0 out of 5 stars My stomach was hurting from laughing so hard. Seriously.
Quite possibly the grossest book I have ever read, it also was the most belly-achingly funny book I have ever come across. A great gift for anyone who loves butt humor, fart humor, Star Trek, Barbara Walters (!!!), unique greeting cards, and what might just be the most digusting (but hilarious) poem ever put to paper. While totally inappropriate for a child, this book is wildly popular with all my adult friends... particularly at parties. That serve alcohol. Lots of alcohol. ... Read more
