5-0 out of 5 stars Whiplash, Headache and Neck Pain: Research-based directions for physical Therapies
Arrived more quickly than expected in excellent condition.Excellent book reviewing the latest research by the authors.A must for any physical therapist who treats these conditions

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent professional resource
I don't usually write reviews, but this book is excellent, and I noticed that it had just one review which is negative.

The book states on its cover that it is aimed at 'physical therapies' - definitely not intended for patients. But any physical therapist treating these conditions would benefit from this very up to date, research based textbook.Excellent!

3-0 out of 5 stars So-so book for treating your own whiplash
Hi,

I was involved in a car accident which has left me with constant cervicogenic headache -- for anyeone here with this sort of problem, you know what I am talking about.I didn't find this book particularly helpful for practical exercies or therapy options;this is a textbook you would give a PT student. It is heavy in "medical-talk" talking about the muscles and bones related to the symptoms, but doesn't get into the problems.

I would HIGHLY recommend you buy Jerome Schoefferman's book, "What to do for a Pain in the Neck : The Complete Program for Neck Pain Relief" which is sold on Amazon.I found excellent relief through that book. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Don't bother if you already use yoga and other natural headache management techniques
This book reads like a doctor's office pamphlet or an introductory primer. It's fully 12% in (on a Kindle) before they finally get past the sales pitch that you read in the sample, and longer than that before they get to the point. It seems to have been written for people who have no prior knowledge of natural medicine and yoga.If you are already familiar with yoga, mudras, natural foods, etc. as headache management, this is probably not the book for you and will likely be a big disappointment. On the other hand, if that's what you are looking for and this is your first exposure to the subject (and you like it), then I can't recommend enough that you do more research and learn about hand mudras and natural foods, different types of yoga, etc.I think they should have added "An Introduction to" prior to the rest of the title. That would help set the expectation to the right level.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very practical
This book has positions for headache relief that can be done without doing headstands! They were even approved by my yoga instructor who assured me that although I can't get into some of the exact postures yet (due to my weight and fibromylgia) I will get there with practice. They will improve strength in the shoulder girdle and neck muscles that can have a great deal to do with headaches.
It reviews types of headache's, how to tell them apart, how yoga can provide relief, easy to understand instructions and pictures. There are 2, one short & one longer, safe and effective routines. There are variation suggested for pregnant women, overweight people, even cautions for people with injuries or conditions that a particular position might aggrevate. There are also suggestions for alternative things you can try for migraines and tension headaches and a list of book, video,& music resources in the appendix.
I found this book helpful and well worth the money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect

"Although headaches can't necessarily be cured, they can be controlled with certain lifestyle changes and, if needed, the wise and judicious use of modern medications," says neurologist Lawrence Robbins, M.D., founder of the Robbins Headache Clinic in Northbrook, Illinois. Robbins, who suffers from migraines himself, contends that many sufferers just put up with headaches, even though revolutionary modern treatments are effective and available. "Tragically, although headache doctors now have the medical know-how to help more than 90 percent of headache sufferers, more than 70 percent of sufferers never even consult a doctor about their headaches," Robbins writes.

If you suffer from severe headaches, nondrug therapies--while certainly worth trying--may not be enough. Therefore, the authors describe nonmedication strategies, but mainly focus on the vast array of medications that can dramatically reduce headache pain. For example, 10 pages describe "first-line medications for aborting migraines" in detail (including description, typical dose, and side effects) and in a clear, understandable style. If those don't work for you, the authors present "second-line medications" in similar detail. It's better not to have the migraine in the first place, of course, so you'll also learn many ways to prevent migraines, both drug and nondrug. Headache Help also helps you with tension headaches, cluster headaches, headaches in children and adolescents, and less common headaches. The first time you find relief from a chronic headache that you thought you had to endure, you'll be glad you read this book. --Joan Price ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Migraine sufferer's ammunition
If you have migraines, you really need this book. Not only does Dr. Robbins write in a down-to-earth fashion that laypeople can understand, he also covers almost all of the newer treatments. Read this book and you can talk to your doctor and/or neurologist with confidence.

Unfortunately, new drugs come out so rapidly that we need a new edition already. But until then, Dr. Robbins' book remains the key resource for headache sufferers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Migraine sufferer from Michigan
This is the most comprehensive headache book I've found.Other's I've read are biased towards pushing only drug therapies or only non-drug therapies. If you suffer from headaches, this is the only book you need to read.If you're doctor seems to be getting nowhere helping treat your headaches, give him/her a copy.

Editorial Review

Product Description

In 1983, Mike O’Connor opened the Bird Watcher’s General Store on Cape Cod, which might well have been the first store devoted solely to birding in the United States. Since that time he has answered thousands of questions about birds, both at his store and while walking down the aisles of the supermarket. The questions have ranged from inquiries about individual species (“Are flamingos really real?”) to what and when to feed birds (“Should I bring in my feeders for the summer?”) to the down-and-dirty specifics of backyard birding (“Why are the birds dropping poop in my pool?”). Answering the questions has been easy; keeping a straight face has been hard. Finally, it occurred to O’Connor that if he answered these questions in print, he might be able to buy groceries in peace.

Why Don’t Woodpeckers Get Headaches? is the solution for the beginning birder who already has a book that explains the slight variation between Common Ground-Doves and Ruddy Ground-Doves but who is really much more interested in why birds sing at 4:30 A.M. instead of 7:00 A.M., or whether it’s okay to feed bread to birds, or how birds rediscover your feeders so quickly when you’ve just filled them after a long vacation. Or, for that matter, whether flamingos are really real.

“Mike O’Connor knows birds—I mean, REALLY knows them. He has been answering questions about birds for years, and he can deliver the straight scoop with a hilarious twist that makes it unforgettable. Reading this book is almost as fun as bird watching, and that’s saying a lot!” —Kenn Kaufman, author of the Kaufman Field Guide to the Birds of North America

“O’Connor’s book delightfully answers almost any question one could ask about birds. I am impelled to declare that the Chesworth pen and ink drawings add a sprinkling of ‘salt‘ to O’Connor’s bird tales. This is a fun book to read, whether nibbled at a bit at a time, or in one large clump.”—New Hampshire Union Leader

“This is quite possibly the funniest bird book ever written. O’Connor has broken the mold of straight-laced bird books.” —WildBird

Mike O’Connor is the owner of the Bird Watcher’s General Store on Cape Cod. His column, Ask the Bird Folks, appears in The Cape Codder, and his writing has been included in The Best American Science and Nature Writing 2004. He lives in Orleans, Massachusetts.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great read!
This book is so funny. If you are a birder or just want a good laugh check this book out. Mike O'connor writes seriously with dead pan humor. More than once did I bust out laughing at his replies to the birders question.

5-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable and informative
This is an easy read... yet very enjoyable with great ideas for backyard birders!I actually laughed out loud at some of the quips. It is a book that you can read a few sections when you get a chance, then come back to it over a period of time. I have ordered several for gifts for friends and family who love birdwatching so they can share in the reading experience!Definitely recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars birders have a sense of humor too
I laughed out loud several time through the read. Thanks, Mike O'Conner you're right on point. We Birders are a real crazy lot...

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for any level birder, fun and full of good advice
Mr. O'Connor runs a bird store on Cape Cod and writes a column about birds and birders for the local paper there, The Cape Codder. He answers the questions that people who shop in birder stores ask people who run the stores. Often the people who ask the questions are new to birding. Sometimes they are eighty years old and sometimes they are five years old. We've never heard a bad question from such people. How do I get birds to come to my backyard? What do I feed them? What kind of birds like peanuts? What is this "thistle" or "nyjer" you sell? If I leave my hummingbird feeders up too long will that keep the hummingbirds from migrating? How do I keep squirrels off my bird feeders? What are the best binoculars? What was that little brown bird that I had at my feeder last weekend? Mr. O'Connor answers them. He answers with wit and verve. His answers are accurate, humane and wise. This is a great book for anyone you know who is beginning to know birds. It is even a good book for a birder of any level.Best of all, you'll laugh out loud and heaven knows, we could all use some of that these days. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Misdiagnosed with Migraines for Years
I have had headaches for years. I have visited 4 neurologists, 2 chiropractors, 1 allergist, 1 ear nose & throat doctor, 1 accupuncturist and spent THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS on MRI's, medications, bloodtests, you name it, trying to relieve my headache pain. Does this sound like you? Then get this book!

I was diagnosed with migraine 5 years ago, but the medications were not working.

I decided to do research on my own and first read "Heal Your Headache" by Buchholz, since it was rated the highest on Amazon. I followed the diet, tried the drugs, etc. I tried this for over a year and the headaches became worse and more frequent.

I decided that I must have been misdiagnosed, so back to Amazon I went. I discovered this book 3 weeks ago and it has changed my life! I wish I had known about cervicogenic headaches at least 5 years ago. I have never heard of them, but after reading the book, confirming it with my neurologist and chiropractor, I am now on a completely new program to treat my chronic daily headaches. And it's working.

I wish the media would devote more attention to this little talked about problem so that others that have been misdiagnosed with migraine can get the relief they need!

5-0 out of 5 stars Headaches
This is a very good read, written by 2 neurologists.I found out more about headaches in this one book, then from any doctor I have seen.

5-0 out of 5 stars Info on "Neck Headaches", Migraines, and Much More
This book is great! It covers "cervicogenic headaches," which are headaches that actually stem from neck pain. Who knew! The doctors say that some people have been diagnosed for years with migraines or tension headaches when the problem is really a pain in their neck which goes to the head. (They explain how that can happen.) So, drugs for headaches may work if you have neck headaches (or may not) but either way, you're not addressing the real problem. I followed their suggestions for neck exercises, medications and practical advice (like not holding the cell phone between your neck and shoulder) and feel much better!

This book also covers migraines, tension headaches, combination headaches and more. For example, some people get daily headaches. The authors discussed a study in which people cut their consumption of cola (with caffeine) and in some headaches, their headaches disappeared completely.

If you get a lot of headaches, you need this book.

Product Description

From Here to Eternity and The Thin Red Line, both wartime novels (and major motion pictures), established Jones as one of the greatest American writers of the 20th-century. For this first and only collection of his stories (out of print for more than 15 years), arranged chronologically, James Jones wrote, in addition to a general introduction, individual and very personal prefatory remarks that illuminate his development as a writer over 20 years, beginning in 1947. The 13 penetratingly sensitive, remarkably varied stories are about men, women, and children in circumstances ranging from war to marriage to childhood to courtship. Each story is distinguished by the classical simplicity, emotional resonance, and lasting impact that is the hallmark of the great short-story writer. Brand new preface by the author’s daughter, Kaylie Jones. The James Jones Literary Society will participate in the promotion of this book.

"Superbly realized stories . . . Personal, vigorous, meaningful."—Library Journal

"We feel the impact of Jones’s vitality. He is masculine, uninhibited, not abashed by whatever he uncovers of human weakness and sexuality."—Chicago Sun-Times

"The thirteen stories are anything but dated . . . a compact social history of what it was like for Mr. Jones’s generation to grow up, go to war, marry, and generally, to become people in America."—The Nation

James Jones (1921–1977) became internationally famous with his first novel, From Here to Eternity, a classic portrayal of Army life in WWII, which won the National Book Award. Over the next 25 years, he wrote 10 more books, both fiction and non-fiction.

Kaylie Jones, daughter of James Jones, is the author of four novels, including A Soldier’s Daughter Never Cries (also a major film) and Celeste Ascending.

4-0 out of 5 stars "Writing stories is like having a series of high-fever ailments in which the crisis comes soon and either passes or doesn't."
After reading James Jones' daughter Kaylie's memoir, Lies My Mother Never Told Me, a few months ago, I thought I should read something by her father for perspective. And short stories, a genre I enjoy, seemed a better choice than From Here to Eternity. The thirteen stories, most of which can either be categorized as childhood or war-themed, are ordered chronologically based on completion date. I loved some of them, especially A Bottle of Cream, which, in the before-story blurb, he claims is "probably" his "favorite in the whole book." It's about a guy gone wrong who did right...back in the day. These background-information containing blurbs preceding each story are one of the book's best features. Of the war stories, some of which contain characters from other books, I most liked Greater Love (read the spoiler-containing blurb on this one afterwards) about some soldiers that go out "to dig up casualties." The five childhood stories are autobiographical. He answered his nine-year-old daughter's question about them thusly, "They're all true...I just had to change a few things sometimes, you know, lie a little, to make them better stories." As a parent of children of about that age, I question his decision to suggest she read the two stories I liked least: The Tennis Game, involving a young boy, which was, according to Jones, about "male masochism, and the title story, which gave me the creeps due to its, as the author calls it, `"near-but-not-quite-incest" thing.' My only other complaint would be the less than thrilling study guide. In summary, The Ice Cream Headache is an interesting, unconventional collection of short stories by a man most famous for his award-winning war writing. Also good: The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien, The Turning: Stories by Tim Winton, and Flyboys by Jim Bradley.

5-0 out of 5 stars A writer whose stories never get old
I read these stories many years ago and was thrilled to see how well they hold up. The study guide by Prof. Judith Everson makes me want to teach these stories to my graduate students. I'm particularly fond of the childhood stories, which seem so perceptive and sincere and harsh at the same time. It's nice also to see the development of the writer over a ten-year period, from his early years after he got out of the Army, to his later stories, after the publication of FROM HERE TO ETERNITY. ... Headache is the number one complaint that causes a patient to see a neurologist. Because headaches constitute such a large part of many clinicians practices, the United Council for Neurologic Subspecialties created an annually-administered headache subspecialty exam in 2006.

Headache Medicine: Questions and Answers is the only question-and-answer book for the new headache subspecialty exam, with more than 500 questions, answers, explanations, and references to help readers self-assess their knowledge and to prepare for the subspecialty exam, as well as the neurology Board examination.

Headache Medicine: Questions and Answers covers everything from the basics of epidemiology and co-morbidity, to must-know clinical neurology, to diagnosis and treatment. Board-type review questions are used throughout, each with an answer, a detailed explanation, and one or more references to help direct more in-depth review as desired. Divided into six key sections for targeted topic review, this is the most comprehensive and effective way to prepare for exams. ... Read more
