Product Description
"Headache, Orofacial Pain and Bruxism: Diagnosis and Multidisciplinary Approaches to Management" has been written by clinicians for clinicians. It contains the collective knowledge of hundreds of years of clinical experience. The authors are drawn from a range of disciplines which regularly encounter patients with headache, orofacial pain or bruxism. They have described evidence-informed clinical practice derived from anatomical, physiological, and biomechanical concepts. Patients who present with headache, orofacial pain or bruxism provide a clinical challenge to make sense of symptoms, sources, and contributing factors. There are many structures associated with problems in this region and patients may call on any of a number of health practitioners for diagnosis and treatment. It is often beyond the expertise of a single practitioner to address all facets of the problem without the assistance of colleagues. This book provides clinicians with the theoretical and clinical information required to appreciate the role of each discipline involved in the management of patients with headache, orofacial pain and bruxism.Clinicians are encouraged to use a multidisciplinary approach and to collaborate in the comprehensive management of these patients. ... Product Description
A woman’s spiritual struggles can have a profound impact on her health. It is through our bodies that we are tempted. It is also through our bodies that we serve God.
Does God care about our physical struggles? This six-week interactive study examines the stories of biblical women to reveal that God cares deeply about our bodies and our health. Each week’s lesson will combine a Bible story (such as Esther, Hannah or the woman with the issue of blood) with a health issue (such as stress, hormones or depression) to lead women to greater spiritual and physical health. This study emphasizes that what we eat and drink, how much sleep we get and how we respond to stress affects our service to God. Each week includes studies for five days.
This study is not intended to diagnose or treat any health condition the reader may have. Rather, its purpose is to motivate the believer to realize how much God cares about our physical condition and its relation to our spiritual lives.

How acupressure works:

Acupressure and acupuncture share the same active points (alsocalled trigger points). The ancient Chinese developed system of active pointsstimulation over 5,000 years ago. The active points are located on imaginarylines called meridians. Accordingly, the points are referred to by the meridianthey are located on and consecutive number of point on that meridian.

The ancient Chinese believed that life energy chi (pronouncedchee) flows through these meridians. In a healthy person the energy flow troughmeridians is unobstructed. The blockade of chi flow results in an illness. TheChinese believed that active points stimulation clears the meridians and improvesthe flow of energy.

The western medical science only begins to understand the mechanismsresponsible for positive effects of active points stimulation. Stimulation ofactive points is thought to lead to increased release of endorphins. Endorphinis a natural body painkiller. Endorphin and morphine are chemically differentmolecules but, by coincidence, they have very similar 3-dimensional shape. Thissimilarity in shape allows morphine to bind the endorphin receptor, reduce pain, and induce feeling of happiness. Thus endorphin released by acupressure stimulationmay lead to relaxation and normalization of body functions.

3-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating Subject, But Poorly Written
I love that this book tackles the topic of the history of treatment of migraines and headaches. There is no other book that covers this ground, so it is good in that respect. However, it is very poorly written. I wish they'd done a better job with this fascinating topic.

1-0 out of 5 stars What's the point?
This book was written by Seymour Diamond MD and Mary A. Franklin.Dr. Diamond is a family physician and not a neurologist. Dr. Diamond became interested in headache many years ago.He was a pioneer in the use of educational forums for medical marketing.Otherwise, he has made no real contribution to our understanding of the neurobiology of head pain.Instead, he continues to promote Wolff's vascular hypothesis of migraine (pages 66-67). This hypothesis states that migraine is a disorder of blood vessel size -- vasoconstriction (narrowing) causes the neurological symptoms of migraine and vasodilation causes the throbbing head pain of migraine. We now know that central and peripheral neural mechanisms are responsible for the symptoms of migraine. The headache of migraine begins before there is vasodilation. Some agents can cause vasodilatation and head pain. But equally potent vasodilators (eg, vasoactive intestinal peptide) may not cause pain despite tremendous vasodilation. The newest treatment for migraine ("calcitonin gene-related peptide antagonists") are as effective as ergotamine and Imitrex without the vasoconstriction effect that makes them risky for patients with vascular disease.
As a neurologist who has suffered from migraine headaches since my first year of medical school and a head pain specialist who has seen over 10,000 patients since 1978, I am puzzled why this book was written. The historical descriptions regarding the cause(s) of head pain are unlikely to interest non-physicians.Knowing that some famous people suffered from migraine may have provided some solace to migraine sufferers when physicians believed that migraine was a psychosomatic disorder -- caused by the "resentments and dissatisfactions of life" (Harold G. Wolff). Now that the neural basis of migraine is firmly established, such reassurance seems unnecessary.
Migraine has a prevalence of 11% in the general population (6% of men and 18% of women).Approximately 1 out of 4 women around the age of 40 suffer from migraine. It is hardly surprising that prominent writers, artists, actors, peformers, doctors, generals, and politicians have experienced migraine headaches. Migraine can afflict celebrities and criminals. There is no evidence (unfortunately) that migraine confers special intelligence, talent, or wisdom.

5-0 out of 5 stars Headache history
This complete resource of migraine and headache throughout history is written by leading headache expert, Seymour Diamond. This book includes a comprehensive review of headache references, descriptions, and treatments from ancient history to the 20th century. Headache descriptions for a wide variety of famous figures are included, including scholars, artists, politicians, and literary characters. The headache sufferer who reads this book will see that he or she is not alone in experiencing different symptoms and suffering with headaches. Beautiful drawings and color plates depicting migraine symptoms and auras are included. This book provides an invaluable walk through history for those interested in headache. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars From the doctors point of view, but oh so easy to read!
This book is wonderful. Dr.Young and Dr.Silberstein explain headaches and Migraine so everyone understands. Never gets "too doctor". A great read for any Migraineur.

5-0 out of 5 stars very helpful for the migraine sufferer
This book is one of the better ones I have read on the subject. It is more up to date than some of the other ones out there which is great if you're looking into some of the newer meds (both preventative and acute). The book gives the reader a good overview of migraine and it's history without going too deep into it that the reader stops reading before she gets to the "good stuff".This isn't one of those books that recommends a plan for getting rid of the migraines, rather it is a very informative one that touches on both drugs and alternative ways of treatment.I really like that it was written by two directors of a headache clinic.

5-0 out of 5 stars An outstandingreference for headache sufferers!!
An exceptional book!!! A definite "must have" for any headache sufferer.Drs. Young and Silberstein have produced an extremely well written book. "Migraine and Other Headaches" speaks directly to the average reader, with all essential terms spelled out in detail. The use of case studies, tables, and illustrations also aid the reader in their understanding of various concepts.
From the fascinating history of headache to the description of countless headache types and therapies, this comprehensive text captures the essence of headache management.
Two leading experts in their field, the authors stress the doctor/patient relationship as a partnership. This type of partnership can provide the patient with a sense of empowerment to take some control of their headaches. This reader firmly believes that a pleasant working relationship with their physician is crucial, particularly in headache management.
Throughout the text, lifestyle changes have been incorporated as well as recommendations for maintaining daily routines. Additionally, medical therapies, such as various medications and their uses are fully examined.Alternative therapies are explained in detail as well, from herbs and supplements to acupuncture and relaxation techniques.
This publication is also an excellent resource for family and friends of headache sufferers. Taking the time to read this book will hopefully provide some insight into their loved one's pain and difficulties.
I highly recommend this book as an enhancement (or even a beginning) to any "headache library".

5-0 out of 5 stars Not as casual as most on the topic
Drs. William Young and Stephen Silberstein's Migraine And Other Headaches is not as casual as most on the topic: it provides a medically-based analysis of the causes of different types of headaches, defines different migraine experiences, and differentiates between severe headache, tension headache, and migraine. While the reading in Migraine And Other Headaches isn't as easy as some self-help guides on the topic, the focus on uncovering the source of symptoms and various treatment options makes this medical handbook an excellent guide for sufferers seeking better care or more information.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the finest, a must-have book!
Up-to-date, comprehensive, full of information, yet totally readable. For anyone who experiences headaches or Migraines, this is a must-have book. The authors have achieved the right tone and level for this book, providing information explained at just the right level for patients. THANK YOU! ... Read more

Product Description

An essential survival guide for parents whose children suffer with persistent and often debilitating pain

Approximately ten million children are living with chronic pain. Most people would be surprised at such numbers, but for the parents of these children, the challenge of helping a pain-stricken child live a normal life is a frightening and frustrating reality. Chronic pain in children can manifest as abdominal, migraine, or facial pain. It also stems from a wide variety of disorders such as juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, cystic fibrosis, hemophilia, and childhood cancers. No matter what type of chronic pain the child suffers with, a parent must be armed with an understanding of how a child's expression and experience of pain differs from an adult's.

Trained in pediatric anesthesia and intensive care at Boston Children's Hospital, Dr. Elliot Krane has devoted his entire professional life to refining and innovating techniques, strategies, and therapies to relieve the suffering of children with pain. In his book, Relieve Your Child's Chronic Pain, parents will find the information and tools they need to get the very best care for their child. It will help you:

  • Recognize, measure, and evaluate your child's pain properly

  • Learn about the many alternative pain-management approaches that can be used at home

  • Dispel fears about addiction if your child is prescribed a narcotic

  • Find an appropriate pain-management clinic for your child

  • Reduce the stress and anxiety in the home in a way that benefits the entire family

You may not always be able to eliminate chronic pain entirely, but you can succeed in minimizing your child's suffering. ... Read more

Product Description
Patients with headache pose many clinical challenges.Even experienced clinicians occasionally arrive at the point where diagnostic, work-up, treatment, or prognostic thinking becomes blocked. In short, we all find ourselves from time to time in an exam room or at the bedside, asking ourselves, "What do I do now?"Standard textbooks are often not helpful enough, and tracking down a consultant can be difficult. This book serves the need for a quick reference tool for these difficult headache clinical questions.

In this book, nationally known headache specialists Drs Lawrence Newman and Morris Levin have simulated the "curbside consultation" in a representative set of 33 "mini-cases" of headache and facial pain. The key questions in each are addressed, much as a consultant would do over the phone or in the hallway. This volume is divided into three sections that cover the typical ground for head/face pain consultation: (1) Diagnostic Questions, (2) Treatment Considerations, and (3) Prognostic, Social and Legal Issues.Recommendations are based on the most current evidence available.Diagnostic thinking is presented along the lines of the International Classification of Headache Disorders, second edition (ICHD-II).A list of key clinical points appears at the end of each case discussion, followed by a list of suggested articles or chapters for those interested in doing further reading on the subject.Tables are provided for quick reference in most chapters.

This book is designed as a very practical resource for clinicians at all levels of training in all fields of medicine who treat patients with headache and facial pain syndromes. WDIDN-Headache and Facial Pain focuses on the major motivating force driving most clinicians -- the intellectual challenge of sorting through complex important clinical problems.

Key Features:
* The book centers around a variety of clinical cases likely to be encountered in an office setting.
*Case discussions are handled as a consultant would handle the curb-side consult over the phone or in the hallways speaking to a colleague.
*The ICHD-II criteria, evidence-based medicine, and best practices have been incorporated.
*There are helpful charts, tables, and take home messages. ... Read more
