Book Description
A powerful call for a paradigm shift in heart disease therapy.

Based on the groundbreaking results of a twenty-year nutritional study by Dr. Esselstyn, a preeminent researcher and clinician, this book illustrates that a plant-based, oil-free diet can not only prevent and stop the progression of heart disease but can also reverse its effects. The proof lies in the incredible outcomes for patients who have followed Dr. Esselstyn's program, including a number of patients in his original study who had been told by their cardiologists that they had less than a year to live. Within months of starting the program, Dr. Esselstyn's patients began to improve dramatically, and twenty years later, they remain free of symptoms.

Complete with more than 150 delicious recipes, this book explains the science behind the simple plan that has drastically changed the lives of Dr. Esselstyn's patients forever. It will empower readers to take control of their heart health. ... Read more

All the research laid bare by the man who conducted it! A fascinating, even exciting, read as you discover "Essy's" progress to finding a rock solid means of preventing and curing heart disease (read ALL degenerative disease). Sure, read "The China Study" and any of John McDougals fine books but be sure to read this one. There's a great bonus too. Half the book is well arranged as recipes and these are worth the purchase price alone - they are great!

5-0 out of 5 stars Exciting and promising
I am very excited by this book. He starts in the first few pages with his program's summary, unlike many books in which you have to read the whole book to know what it says. This is a plant based absolutely vegetarian diet, with virtually no oil..not even "heart healthy" oil such as olive oil. No nuts...ooouuuch, I just love them, especially cashews, and no avocados...but that's OK. I'm SOLD on his ideas. I plan to start this tomorrow. Age 59, feeling 70 a lot of the time, with unhealthy blood fats, I feel my health is declining. I believe Dr. Esselstyn will save my life.
I thought I ought to have felt well on a mediterranean diet that I follow, but I really don't. So I agree, his diet is not drastic; its the drastically bad American diet which we ought to ridicule.
He shows before-and-after heart cath. results on patients he's treated with this diet, and the results are tremendous. Yes, we can do this...we should, unless we want to die prematurely.

5-0 out of 5 stars Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease by Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn
Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease, is a marvelous and accurate account of how plant based nutrition is able to work with the body for healing of heart disease but other motalities or diseases that would do harm to the body.

Thank you so much Dr. Esselstyn very much.

5-0 out of 5 stars An informative read
Wonderfully put for those of us who are not scientists.Very easy read and plenty of recipes to begin a lifetime of change.

4-0 out of 5 stars Probably a cure but is it practical?
Want to prevent heart disease? Then get your cholesterol under 150. How to do that?Don't eat meat, fish, eggs or any dairy product, nuts and any oil at all even olive oil. What's left?vegetables, legumes, whole grains (no added oil to breads or pasta) and fruit. I'm sure this will work but most people will not be disciplined enough to do this. Forget about eating at restaurants or at a dinner party. One suggestion for this book would be to provide more details about the China study. It is mentioned as a landmark study but not many details were included. I give the book four stars because of the 150 recipes that do not have oils and at least can be included in one's diet frequently. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Heart disease will be reversed.
I have been reading a lot of books on medical matters. The titles in general are always very promising but the content deceives from time to time. Not this time. This book is a must read for everybody, CVA-diseased people but even more for healthy people. I should recommend it also to every doctor. Not only in the States but certainly in Europe where medicine is based on treating the symptoms. That's old stuff. Prevention is what the population needs and that's what this book is all about.
A very sincere congratulation for the authors of this fantastic work.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great primer for Docs & patients alike, saved my life!
I have been reading alternative & conventional texts for years and what I found is that when I had lots of health problems the conventional medicine only works to get you out of immediate danger but does not address underlying problems or corrections, and treats symptoms only.
After turning50 I decided I needed to read this book and found it to be a wealth of information. Thanks to this book I went out and found an "intergrative" doctor who did these extra tests and found my LPa's were >300, Normal is below 30 (even though other cholesterol numbers were good). This means I'm a walking time bomb for blood clots to brain or heart. By using L-lysine, curcumin and natkonise my numbers are 45 after 2 months. Conventional doctors don't do these extra tests because there are no drugs to fix LPa's. By reading this book, going to find an intergrative doctor, (one trained as MD & then gets extra training in alternative medicine)I believe I will live longer,(survival rates are low for blood clots to brain or heart). My new doctor has also helped me with numerous other ailments an I feel better than I did 10 years ago.
Thank you Dr. Sinatra. If I had not read your book I would never have known about the LPa's. You saved my life!

4-0 out of 5 stars A lot of information in an easy to read format
I was recently diagnosed at the age of 41 with congestive heart failure. It came on fast, and I was not prepared for it.I have been researching on the internet the procedures, drugs, and supplements that might be effective in treating my condition, but the information is all over the place and difficult to bring together. In "Reverse Heart Disease Now", there is a lot of information on suppplements as well as conventional therapy, with excellent suggestions on dosages and what benefits might be expected.I read the book all of the way through and gained a better understanding of my own condition. In these days of fast and prepared food, stress, polution, etc. having this knowledge is a must even if there are no symptoms.I wish that I had come across this book 5 years earlier!

5-0 out of 5 stars New Insight on Vascular problems
I have found this book to be both state-of-the-art, and practical with their excellent results which are backed up by their work in cardiac care practices. They give answers that go well beyond the old "high cholesterol is the problem" thinking that has characterized the field for so long. A breath of new air and thinking. This brings new hope to an often gloomy prognosis for arterial obstruction.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book, one of the best I've used in med school
I read this book cover to cover for my cardio theme. It was clear and well written. I would recommend it highly to anyone in medical school who wants a clear easy read. It has all the detail you need to know, without extraneous material.

5-0 out of 5 stars clear and conscise!
I love the way this book explains things. It made it interesting and easy to understand. Plus it is short and sweet, no fluff or unescessary stuff.

5-0 out of 5 stars EMT-BReading this book
This review is based on the ease of understanding, graphical depictions of functions, and organization of this book.
Even though I'm just a certified EMT-B I have found that this book is reader friendly for someone who has limited medical knowledge. It takes me about three times as long to read a page in this book than it does in my Paramedic physiology book but that's because it's filled with more details. The graphs do a good job of helping visualize the text descriptions.I enjoy reading this book and have learned a lot. Portions of this book will help me in medic school but some of it I will never use. But the more knowledge possessed the better.

5-0 out of 5 stars Definitely a must buy for your cardio block
Everybody in my class really liked this book.Reading it in combination with going to class made cardio easy and fun.I even saw third years during their cardiology rotations with this book in hand.

Excellant work on Nitric Oxide - his 30 years of research has paid off for all of us.I don't agree with his views of some things like eggs and soy, however, in the areas of his expertise it is a great work!

2-0 out of 5 stars Not well balanced
I rated this book 2 stars because, while Dr. Ignarro's theories are very interesting, he fails to mention in making his "prescription" that there are really no long term studies in humans which definitively show benenfit without risks. Therefore, if you decide to use the supplements he recommends, you should understand that it isn't entirely clear whether you're putting yourself at risk.Dr. Ignarro (he's not a medical doctor) certainly gives a lot of good advice on nutrition, exercise, and lifestyle changes that are not very controversial, and which most people have already heard about. His main "contribution" is his suggestion to take supplemental arginine and citrulline plus a few other common anti-oxidants (vitamin C etc).I found it interesting that Michael Roizen MD endorses this book, but in"YOU: The Owner's Manual" Dr. Roizen himself is much more cautious about taking arginine and citrulline, suggesting there are "rumors" it may be useful, but the evidence is far from solid.Other than the formula for supplementation, the rest of the book consists of some biographical information about his research leading to the Nobel prize, and recommendations for better cardiovascular health which are already commonly known. As someone who has had a heart attack, I hope Dr. Ignarro is correct, and I may even try his formula, but too much of his book is based on his convictions rather than solid scientific evidence and I think he should have been more forthright about that.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the forth copy I have purchased
This is a ground breaking book. If this research is correct this will increase the quality, and lengthen the lives of many people. I have given this book away several times to friends & family. It is an easy read with a little technical health info but it is carefully summarized so that the average reader can still gleen much valuable and understandableinformation.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book saved my life!
I am so glad to have gotten this book because it changed my life!My mother has survived both a heart attack and a stroke leaving her in my care.I have had chest pains and went to the doctor for him to tell me that I was following in her footsteps.Since using this book both my mother and I as well as my daughter have been using the diet and exercise plans and meditate and do Yoga and we have never felt better. It is simple and easy to follow if you have a strong desire to care for yourself and your health.Meat=Bad SatFats=Bad and Oils=Bad.....simply don't buy them anymore and it won't be such a tough problem to get them OUT of your life. This book should be placed in every school in America to teach our children how to take care of themselves so that they do not end up with arteries as clogged as our generations have due to not being informed of what the right foods are to eat and what foods to stay away from when WE were young. We used to eat a lot of meat without even knowing what it was doing to us inside. Now we eat veggies and fruit and don't miss the meat at all.And the real plus is my daughter is learning how to pick the right foods from a young age to protect her health while she grows up.I went to the doctor in January to discover ALL signs of heart disease have been reversed! I plan to live over 100 years of age and now this may just become a reality for me!THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!

I am a 46 year old dentist. I worked as a lab tech in a cardiology lab at Washington University in St. Louis as an undergraduate. While there I published two abstracts, as first author, in the American Journal of Cardiology in 1980 & '81.All this does not make me an expert by any stretch of the imagination. However I do hold more knowledge about the science relating to the ornish diet than most people not involved in the field of healthcare. The professor, Dr. H, I worked under in St. Louis often talked about his days of residency, 30 years earlier, at a large hospital in Mexico.Whenever a patient experienced a heart attach, all the residents were called in to observe because it was such a rare occurance.Dr. H said that he made similar observations in Asia. Yet by the time I met Dr. H heart attacks had become routine events in the hospitals where he previously worked. Dr. H firmly believed that the single overwhelming factor of diet caused this dramatic shift from rare to frequent cardiac arrests in those populations. The people there had shifted from very low fat, high complex carb, near-vegetarian diets to a more carnivorous, high fat, western-style diet. Then the arteries started clogging. When I realized that my own total cholesterol was extremely high, I became quite concerned. My physician prescribed Lipitor.I did not like the side effects, and, generally, I dislike taking any medication. So I looked for a diet that resembled that described by Dr. H.Dr. Ornishes diet (as well as that of John McDougall) fit the bill. After 2 months on the Ornish diet my total cholestrol dropped from 310 to 156.After 6 months I had lost weight from 187 lbs. to 154 lbs. and I felt great.I have read some of the concerns about risks involved in the Ornish diet.Frankly, I find them absurd. Were you worried about the risks of eating chicken, beef, fried foods, sauteed foods?Did you ever eat fast food?I think some folks may have analysis paralysis because the Ornish diet is unsual. That's understandable. But get over it. This diet will not only prolong your life, it will prolong your Healthy life. Enjoy the foods; become creative in the kitchen; set yourself free from the horrible diets we've been sold all our lives.

5-0 out of 5 stars This diet works!!!!!
This program works as my father is living proof. You have to be very dedicated to be able to follow it. My father refuses to have any kind of surgery, meds etc and has followed Dr Ornishs program in this book and has lost weight, and his cholesterol is down and he feels great. His Dr says to keep doing what he is doing.

3-0 out of 5 stars research

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Heart Disease Book I've Seen!
I've read quite a few books on the subject, and this is the best I've seen.It includes everything from the technical to the practical (including recipes). The author writes clearly...it was relatively easy to read considering the subject matter.I loved that he didn't say "you should never eat______."It can already be so overwhelming to make changes. This book has a lot of information, but I didn't feel overwhelmed.I was actually ENCOURAGED, not discouraged by reading it.I wish I had only bought this book...it's all I needed, and I would have saved a lot of money!I highly recommended it.

1-0 out of 5 stars I was disappointed
I was very disappointed in this book. I thought it would have some of the treatments that Linus Pauling instigated. All it gives you is advice on your diet. I have that from my Doctor!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Balanced Approach to Heart health issues
I found this book helpful - the diets great - the advice about other life factors good - and it gave me an over-all education about all the different treatments now being used. The book seems logical and simple. It makes good sense.

Of course, like most people I bought this book when I was already in trouble with the old heart.

5-0 out of 5 stars Balanced overview of heart disease and treatment alternatives - provides pros and cons without insisting that it's the only way!
Although a pessimist could say that this is a low key ad for Dr. Whitaker's Wellness Institute, which in small part it is, the book provides a balanced view of just what causes heart disease and provides sobering thoughts on the fact that there is no "magic pill" or clear cut way to attack the problem.Differing views are presented and the background for such, although not clearly articulated in the book itself, is provided via the references so that the reader can further explore if more details are desired. The recipes section is somewhat of a waste of print but other than that I found the book very helpful in aiding in an understanding of heart disease and the array of possibilities for treating it.The book also pretty clearly delineates between a "preventative" program and a "reversal" program, dependent on one's personal situation and goals.

3-0 out of 5 stars How do you know you're reversing heart disease?
How can you really know whether coronary heart disease is truly being reversed? Does just surviving until your next birthday suffice? Does not developing symptoms tell you anything? Does even losing 10 lbs really tell you whether coronary plaque has shrunk?

The answer to all these questions, of course, is no. In past, it hasn't been an easy prospect to prove that heart disease is reversed. It's therefore an easy thing to claim. As a result, many programs cropped up in the last 30 years of the last century that made extravagant claims to reverse heart disease. I believe that Dr. Whitaker's well-intended book is among this genre.

The book has its strong points. Dr. Whitaker does a great job of pointing out the terribly misguided approach of conventional invasive cardiology and bypass surgery, its tragic overuse and abuse, and how so-called medical therapy is nothing more than palliative treatment for a relently progressive disease. He also does a good job of discrediting the conventional low-fat diet approach to heart disease prevention, a diet that frequently precedes your heart attack and diabetes.

I do believe, however, that there's much more of the story yet to be told and Dr. Whitaker's book falls short. ... Read more

Book Description
What even your doctor may not know about the real heart attack risk factors and what you can do to prevent heart disease now.

You count your cholesterol, monitor your fat and sodium consumption, and get regular exercise. But consider these facts: Many people who have heart attacks have cholesterol counts below 200. Low-fat diets can actually raise the heart attack risk in some people. And the wrong kind of exercise can do your heart more harm than good. Now for the good news: You can do something about it, and this book shows you how.

Recent research has revealed that the real risks are a combination of factors that you-and your doctor-may never have heard of, including the crucial differences between cholesterol types and much, much more. In The Heart Disease Breakthrough, Thomas Yannios, M.D., explains the state-of-the-art medical research and the science behind the latest breakthroughs in testing, diagnosis, nutrition, and exercise. And he presents a clear, easy-to-follow 10-step program for counteracting your individual risk factors and attaining optimum heart health.

"For those seriously concerned a with preventing heart disease, this is your guide: detailed, current, strongly worded guidelines. Yannios. . . isn't interested in cushioning the facts or the remedies in a feel-good framework. . . . Guidelines are set out here involving diet, weight control, exercise, and medication. Yannios doesn't let readers off easily, but that doesn't mean he can't offer realistic help: for instance, practically every cardiac risk factor can be countered by exercise; it just has to be the right type of exercise. Heart disease prevention is among the fastest-advancing medical research areas, with new, often conflicting recommendations being published daily. For those at serious risk, this is an understandable, serious, and worthwhile approach." - Kirkus Reviews ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Low Fat Diet Not for Everyone
15% of the population could be harmed by low-fat diets and unless you like playing Russian roulette with your life, you should find out if you're one of them (it requires a specific type of cholesterol test). This book is backed up by scientific studies and goes into relevant details of different types of cholesterol particles. It does take some effort to extract the infomation that is spread throughout the book but it is well within reach of most readers and well worth the effort.

I've read a number of books on preventing heart disease and this one is reccomended because it gives extremely important information you will not find in magazine articles, brochures, or other books. It goes into excellent detail on diet and exercise. The only reason why I think these facts aren't better known is that the extra complexity would confuse some people and cause a few to not to adopt low fat diets which is beneficial to most people.

4-0 out of 5 stars The first book to tell the lipoprotein story
Despite the broad awareness of cholesterol issues in the U.S., heart disease is rampant. A good part of the reason is that many people have causes for heart disease beyond cholesterol. Dr. Yannios has written the first book for the public that makes the complex issue of lipoprotein testing understandable for the average person. Lipoprotein testing fills in the huge gaps left by cholesterol, identifying risk for heart disease even in people with low or normal cholesterols. Dr Yannios talks about how shockingly often people who've suffered heart attacks (an often fatal event!) are told by their doctors that no cause can be identified, or that the causes are genetic and therefore untreatable. Absolute nonsense! Dr. Yannios tells us why.

5-0 out of 5 stars No fluff in this book.
Just intensely interesting and highly informative material that is presented perfectly. This information will motivate you to make the changes in your life necessary for good health - and not through "scare tactics".

It's difficult for me to comprehend how anyone who reads this book can come away with a negative opinion that results in a bad review.

I only wish that I had come into possession of this knowledge at an earlier date.

3-0 out of 5 stars Some good stuff, some risky advice
It is encouraging that Dr. Yannios rejects many of the conventional (and incorrect) approaches to heart disease prevention. There have been no studies that conclusively link high blood cholesterol, high dietary cholesterol, high dietary fat, or high blood triglycerides to heart disease.(For more on this, see Dr. Uffe Ravnskov's excellent book "The Cholesterol Myths.")I was pleased particularly pleased to see him mention that many people who have heart disease have normal cholesterol. In fact, nearly half of the patients in the Framingham heart study who died of coronary disease had blood cholesterol under 220!

I am, however, concerned that Dr. Yannios seems to be so concerned with atherosclerosis as a cause of heart disease. As Dr. Ravnsknov's book shows, there is no evidence that atherosclerosis causes heart disease, nor is there any evidence that high blood cholesterol causes atherosclerosis. And without that evidence, it is plainly risky to treat otherwise healthy patients with expensive cholesterol-lowering drugs that may have serious short- and long-term side effects, simply because they have preatherosclerotic streaks in their arteries.Even fetuses have such streaks.Should we give newborns cholesterol lowering drugs? If so, I am going to go sink all my money into pharmaceutical stocks.

I say, read this book, but read it skeptically.Do not go out and ask your doctor to prescribe cholesterol lowering drugs for you, especially if your cholesterol is normal.Go to a good library and read the journal articles on cholesterol and heart disease yourself, including the numbers.(Summaries can and do lie!)Read the clinical trials of cholesterol lowering drugs to discover the side effects of these drugs, and ask yourself whether, if you are currently healthy, you want to live a life riddled with those side effects in the name of your "health."Read a book on statistics so you'll understand what is and is not statitistically significant. And read "The Cholesterol Myths."

5-0 out of 5 stars Have an MI, then BUY THIS BOOK
I had an MI at the age of 36 (ouch).Since then I've tried to keep up to date on all the real, important research about heart disease causes and prevention.Trust me, you don't want to have a *second* MI.

This book takes all the important stuff you need to know and gives it to you in a form you can understand.Better than that, you can take *action*.Action that is tailored to *YOU*.

Both my GP and my Cardiologist knew less about all the risk factors than I did.We did the super-low-fat diet thing and they wanted to treat my lipids with *only* statins. This book has helped me educate them and given me what I need to advocate for myself.I'm know doing everything I can for my *specific* risk factors.

My diet is now low in carbohydrate. My doctors, of course had put me on an ultra-low-fat diet, which, for me (and for 25% of the U.S. population), was *exactly the wrong thing*.When I went on a high-protein, low carb, moderate fat diet my lipids ***greatly*** improved (oh yah and I lost 30 pounds).

Given my lipids, I know now that Niacin *and* statins are the right choice for my profile (I had an LDL-GGE test recommended in the book).

Hey I just had a thought...maybe *you* should buy this book *before* you have an MI... ... Read more

Book Description

"Not only can you survive with heart disease, you can actually thrive with it for many, many years. If you cope well and follow the advice I give you in this book, you can live as long as you would if you didn't have the illness."
-- from Chapter One, "Begin the Journey"

In this landmark volume, Wayne M. Sotile, Ph.D., breaks the story that every heart patient needs to know: In many cases, it's how you deal with the illness and not the condition of your heart that will determine how completely you recover, or if you recover at all. If you're one of the 61 million Americans diagnosed with heart illness -- whether you've had a heart attack, high blood pressure, angina, or surgery -- the program in this book can extend your life and might even save it.

Many books have dealt with the physical aspects of cardiovascular illness, but Thriving with Heart Disease is the first to offer patients and their loved ones a program for coping with the emotional and psychological side effects that can ravage relationships and throw families into disarray. Dr. Sotile's extraordinary success with cardiac patients attests to his belief that living with heart disease is not a temporary adjustment but a journey you take one moment at a time toward the healthy life you were meant to live, surrounded by the people you love.

Based on the experiences of thousands of patients at Wake Forest University's Cardiac Rehabilitation Program -- the nation's first mind-body center for living well with heart illness -- Dr. Sotile's program provides step-by-step instructions on how to establish a robust, new normal life for you and the people you care about, whether you're a parent with young children, a mature adult with grandchildren, or a single man or woman whose family is a devoted network of friends.

Written with warmth and humor and filled with news of the latest research into the links between heart and brain, body and soul, Thriving with Heart Disease is the book that every heart patient needs to read. It's not a diet book, an exercise book, or a cookbook. It is the first self-help manual to guide heart patients and their loved ones through the psychological side effects they're likely to experience and onto the path to vibrant, new normal lives. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Sound Science & Easy-to-read Help for Heart Disease
As a Registered Dietitian with a PhD in Nutritional Sciences, I was intrigued by Dr. Lundell's book title. In my years of clinical practice, I counseled umpteen patients with heart disease, and usually several other co-existing medical conditions.I knew from experience that the traditional "low-fat, low-cholesterol" and subsequently high-carbohydrate diet was not the answer.

My minor of study for my doctoral degree was microbiology and immunology.Though I did not have the surgeon's perspective to see the inflammation in the cardiac system, other physicians and I discussed the inflammatory hypothesis that Dr. Lundell defends in this book.It makes scientific sense. His book provides convincing evidence to this effect.Scientific peer-reviewed journal publications are cited in the thorough annotated bibliography in the appendices.

More importantly, for the lay person, this book provides excellent practical tips for conforming to the lifestyle that Dr. Lundell recommends. That is to say, actual guidelinees and strategies for grocery shopping, recipe adjusting, meal planning, eating out in restaurants, and supplementation are clear and helpful.Dr. Lundell's "Inflammatory Quotient" food pyramid diagram is a simple way to represent the nutritional lifestyle changes necessary to prevent heart disease.

In summary, "The Cure for Heart Disease" is a worthwhile read and a healthful guideline for this American epidemic.

5-0 out of 5 stars FROM THE HEART is an essential reference any women facing heart disease will need
FROM THE HEART: A WOMAN'S GUIDE TO LIVING WELL WITH HEART DISEASE comes from an author who underwent emergency bypass surgery at age 42 - and who had to not only physically recover, but had to find new ways to recover emotionally. It's the first written for women to focus on the emotional repercussions of heart disease rather than just physical symptoms and recovery alone, and surveys topics ranging from regaining a strong self-image and handling fears to telling others about illness and learning to rely upon one's body once more. From gaining support to learning how to exercise without fear, FROM THE HEART is an essential reference any women facing heart disease will need, and should be a popular public library lend.

5-0 out of 5 stars We Men are Not That Different
This book is written by a woman, for a female audience. And that's just fine. But in reading it I find that only a small part of the book could be restricted to women only. Things like risk factors are just about the same.

The first risk factor is 'Age fifty-five or older, and postmenopausal.' For men this might read age fifty, and of course postmenopausal doesn't enter into it. But then the rest of the risk factors: blood pressure, cholesterol, smoking, diabetes, family history, weight, exercise, diet -- are identical.

Accepting the few differences in men and women, this is an excellent book on both the technical aspects (i.e. risk factors) and the emotional aspects (i.e. relationships with friends and family) - we men are not that different.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Perfect Guidebook for Women with Heart Disease and Their Families
At last a guidebook for women with heart disease by someone who's 'been there'! As a Cardiac Rehabilitation nurse and heart attack survivor, I can attest to the validity of Kathy Kastan's experiences, information, and advice. Patients will find this an invaluable guide to understanding their fears, emotions, conflicts and struggles. While writing from a first person viewpoint, Kathy brings home the impact of heart disease in an understandable and empathetic voice with which readers will instantly identify. I had many "oh, yes, that's so true" moments; the knowledge that another woman walked this path and is such an example of survival is a powerful and motivating message. From the Heart is a must read for medical caregivers of women with heart disease as it provides unique insight and understanding of the hurdles and experiences women endure from event to recovery.I will encourage all mypatients and thier families to begin reading this upon diagnosis and throughout their rehabilitation. It is an identifiable, informative, and empowering source of affirmation that recovery and renewal is within our grasp. Ann de Velasco, R.N.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring, empowering, factual and articulate! A must read for women and their support network, including their health care team
Heart disease is the number one health threat that women face and yet, many women are still unaware of their risks and most don't think it will strike them. And once it does strike, it is often misunderstood since women's symptoms and experiences are often different than men.

Kathy Kastan is to be commended for putting her story, and the stories of other women, into a resource that is motivating, realistic, comprehensive and consistent with current health care recommendations for women with heart disease. It is a book that can help everyone (including health professionals) understand the life changing experience of being diagnosed with heart disease and learn how to re-invent themselves during their healing process.

Many thanks to Kathy for putting her story, and the stories of others, in print! It truly is a guide to not only surviving with heart disease but living life again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great lessons for dealing with any life changing event
I do not have heart disease, but found this book to be a tremendous resource with practical information for how to be in touch with oneself and go on after any life altering event. It offers valuable insights from the author as well as other people about coping with challenges in life and how to deal effectively with interpersonal relationships (family, friends and workplace). It is also a great resource for support services and provides information about the law pertaining to discrimination based on health issues, so that people can become better advocates for themselves. This book is as useful as a therapist. 5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK AND A GREAT READ!!
This is the best book I've read that covers heart disease detection, prevention, and reversal PERIOD.A mandatory read if you have heart disease in your family!! I've read many of these types of books because I have heart disease in my family and have been dealing with genetic high cholesterol my whole life.Everything you need to know about heart disease in one book...it's like a complete handbook on heart disease.

The first part deals with what it is actually like to have a heart attack and what to do to stay alive...this is worth the price of the book alone. The author believes that absolutely NO ONE should ever have a heart attack much less die from one with a little proactive work from you and your doctor.

The book outlines all the various ways to properly test the likelihood of heart disease (just one example: Don't just take a cholesterol and stress test; but actually testing the size of your body's cholesterol may be more valuable to know since you can have a heart attack with as little as 30% blockage and traditional stress test only detects blockage of 70% or greater) This book is absolutely full of this type of useful information which can keep you around for a very long time.

Also, I really liked the way this book has all the up-to-date medial detection and medical treatment technology and goes way beyond the basic stuff you see in all the other medical publications (Details the different types of cholesterol tests, stress tests, heart scan technology, etc.).Also runs through the good points and bad points from a cardiologist standpoint of the more popular diets that people use (instead of just singling out fat as the culprit like every other medical publication.)

This book is technical but simple for the lay person to understand because of the easy explanations Dr. Devane uses. The book gives you today's most up to date tools to PROPERLY detect and reverse heart disease.Just knowing all the facts that are out there makes it easier to motivate yourself to take control and responsibility over making proper decisions if you or someone you love has to deal with heart disease.

GREAT BOOK AND A GREAT READ!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank you Dr. Sinatra.
After discovering I had a very serious heart arythmia, I went on a quest to find information on how I could treat the root of my condition instead of just taking drugs (that had serious side effects). This book has literally changed my life. I currently am doing very well using what I learned from this book and drinking a Hawthorne Berry tea. This book is very deep, authentic and comprehensive. I have no ties to the author and I must say that if you know anyone with a heart condition who is willing to do some self examination, this book will give them incredibly important and useful information.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great credentials - interesting points - makes you think
Dr. Sinatra is both a cardiologist and a psychologist, a rare and useful combination. The thesis of this book is stated way back on page 239:

"My patients have taught me so much about the preciousness of life. If you want to heal or prevent heart disease, the first step is recognitiono fold wounds, losses and your emotional reactions to them. The next stepis mobilizing those trapped energies and feelings and discharging them inways that are nurturing to your heart.Following a healthy lifestyle isanother significant step toward obtaining optimum health. The final stepin healing is to realize the profound depth of spirituality and how heartdisease can, indeed, be a messenger of something more."

His objectivesare to answer his questions listed in his Preface as follows: 1) To whatextent do emotional factors and one's own intrinsic personality play a partin heart disease? 2) Are suppressed feelings and emotions significant? 3)Donegative feelings such as abandonment, heartbreak, betrayal or humiliationcreate conditions that invite death? 4) What do positive emotions such aslove, faith, and good humor play in the process of healing and stayingwell? 5) What is the significance of the way we breathe?

Dr. Sinatratakes us through his medical training and explains his reasons for pursuinga degree in psychology. As the above selection says, he emphasizes therole of heartbreak and loss in the child to the eventual heart diseasedadult. He explains the concept of narcissistic injury, how thenarcissistic parent inflicts it on the child, and the consequences in lateryears.

He prescribes his heart disease reversal program which is basedon established findings in cardiology, but also on his training andknowledge as a bioenergetic psychologist. His program seems a little outof the ordinary since it resembles alternative medicine, but he describesit in a way that makes sense.

The only shortcoming of this book, in myopinion, is his case histories since they do not seem to relate to hispoints very well. They could be omitted or put in an appendix.

As aheart patient, I learned much from this book, and recommend it. ... Read more

Book Description
"At the turn of the century, heart disease and atherosclerosis were virtually unheard of. Today, however, they are the Western world's number one killers, with cancer running right behind. As a practitioner who has examined many people, I know that clogged arteries and poor circulation are an unfortunate fact of life for many. While mortality statistics at the turn of the century are not altogether reliable, there is always a consistent figure for deaths from heart attacks or heart disease: between 6 and 8 %. Dr. Byrnes" was not a medical doctor. Before he died of cardiovascular disease at age 40 he held a doctorate in "Alternative Medicines from the Alternative Medicines Research Institute". His undergraduate work was not in a premed curriculum. He had a bachelor of arts degree in comparative religion.

If you want to treat or prevent heart disease read the works of Dr. Dean Ornish M.D.. His program has been clinically proven to reverse heart disease. The proof of his work is published in mainstream conservative medical journals.
