Book Description
A pioneering cardiologist and the author of the international bestseller The South Beach Diet presents the truth about cardiac care in this country and offers his proven program for preventing heart attacks and strokes.

This year alone more than 1 million men and women in this country will suffer a heart attack or stroke. The shocking fact is that the majority of heart attacks and strokes can be prevented with the medical knowledge we already possess. Yet this isn't happening. Why? Because doctors and hospitals are paid more to treat disease with invasive techniques like angioplasty and bypass surgery than to prevent it. In his most personal and passionate work yet, Dr. Arthur Agatston champions a revolution in heart disease prevention that will enable people to stay out of the hospital and off the operating table.

In Part 1 of this compelling book, he tells you why seemingly healthy people can suddenly have a heart attack and why people with great cholesterol numbers can be walking time bombs. He explains why belly fat can be an early warning sign of future heart disease and why a noninvasive heart scan can help predict your risk of heart attack. In Part 2, he presents the South Beach Heart Program, his 4-step plan for detecting, preventing, and even reversing heart disease: The 4 steps include: Heart-healthy eating, regular aerobic and core-strengthening exercise, state-of-the art diagnostic testing, and the latest heart-protective medications, as necessary. Thanks to his aggressive prevention approach, Dr. Agatston rarely sees a heart attack or stroke in his practice. Now you can benefit from the prevention strategy he uses to help his patients every day.

"What Size Is Your Cholesterol?"
An Essay by Arthur Agatston, MD
You may think that the title of this article is a mistake and that I meant to say, "What Number Is Your Cholesterol?" But the fact is that the size of your cholesterol is just as important as the total number. If that surprises you, there is a good chance that much of what you think you know about cholesterol is wrong and that what you don't know about cholesterol could be killing you.

Luckily, there are now tests that can determine the size of your cholesterol and whether it is a problem. And there are steps you can take to do something about it if it is. As I explain in The South Beach Heart Program, the earlier you know where you stand in terms of your risk for heart disease, the greater your chance of preventing a heart attack or stroke in the future.

Before I go into how you can find out the size of your cholesterol, let me give you a little background on cholesterol in general.

3-0 out of 5 stars purchased based on experience with the South Beach Diet
I purchased this book for a friend who had bypass surgery.I had previously read South Beach Diet and tried it out.I thought it was extremely informative and sensible. It definitely improved my weight and my overall health.I hope this book will help my friend make some needed changes in his diet and life style.

4-0 out of 5 stars SOUTH BEACH DIET & HEART HEALTH BOOK
I HAVE NOT READ THROUGH THE ENTIRE BOOK YET, BUT HAVE MOST, IF NOT ALL, DR. AGASTON'S BOOKS ON SOUTH BEACH DIET & HAVE STUDIED NUTRITION OVER THE YEARS (ALOT) IT'S GREAT INFORMATION & IT SEEMS THE ONLY WAY TO DIET IS THROUGH NORMAL EATING WITH GOOD CARBS & LOW GI FOODS ADDING LOW FAT DAIRY (OR NONFAT) PLUS FRUITS, VEGGIES & WHOLE GRAINS PLUS SMALL AMOUNTS OF NUTS, SEEDS & LEGUMES.SO I AGREE WITH IT - NOW IF I COULD ONLY STICK TO IT FULL-TIME! I THINK IT'S ON TARGET INFORMATION & WOULD RECOMMEND THIS BOOK. THANKS - STILL TRYING TO 'REVERSE'.

4-0 out of 5 stars Almost complete
A very good book, almost excellent. It's nearly comprehensive and a great introduction for the middle-aged man to understand the cumulative negative implications of declining fitness and increasing inactivity. It's shortfalls are the limited examples of day-to-day sample menu's and the advantages of non-processed foods.Additionally, the chapter on exercising is a bit lame in this day of mens health, and widely distributed fitness, etc. Finally chapter summaries would help.Otherwise, well worth the investment and the read. For me, this book has been a great help for me to understand how to make an important mid-life change in direction to improve not only the quality of my life but also my longevity.

5-0 out of 5 stars A guide to stay away from the cardiac surgeon
Dr. Agatston book is a great story about the limitations of the current medical system, with emphasis on how heart disease is treated in the USA, and how we, collectively, could do a better job by improving the earlydiagnosis of heart disease. It encourages people to develop simple habits and follow treatment options thatreduce the number of surgical interventions, as well as the number of cardiac events and deaths. It gives its readers the knowledge and tools to get going with these solutions. The typical doctor is not well prepared to diagnose heart disease early enough. Patients are well rewarded when they are proactive in prevention methods. Hospitals and many cardiologists often intervene to save patients whentheir lives are already compromised, but have no financial incentive to truly emphasize early prevention for the rest. Dr. Agatston found one: Educate the public by selling books. Given that heart disease is the number one killer, this one is worth it.

5-0 out of 5 stars prevention is the way to go
The author has things just right. Preventing heart attacks is the key to treating them. The strongest part of this book is his recommendation on Statins to control cholesterol levels. I have personal and remarkable results from following his recommendations. Even at 80 years of age by following the authors four step plan I have increased my heart pumping capacity by 50% over a 12 months period. I was not a big fan of his first book - South Beach Diet but his heart program is a life saver ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Practical book on Heart disease
Post heart attack I bought or borrowed numerous books on heart disease. This book has information that is scattered over many sources and so is a nice addition to the literature on heart disease and would be very valuable to anybody who wants to understand their disease and manage it or try to avoid getting it. It does a good job of explaining the current understanding of heart disease development, and several practical steps one can take to avoid getting the disease or manage it if one has it.While one focus of the book is the much higher than normal incidence ofheart disease in South Asians in reality it is an excellent read for just about anybody. It does a very nice job of summarizing a great deal of research and highlights the Indian specific risk factors and appropriate medical responses.Much of the data is backed up by references to the medical literature that one can consult if one so desires (so much of the book is evidence based rather than anecdotal in nature). As an example of the obscure data that is hard to find but is included in the book is a quantification of expected benefit from several lifestyle & theraputic changes likes loosing weight or lowering LDL or quitting smoking etc.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for all South Asians
Dr. Enas has compiled his enormous knowledge and expertise, based on his extensive clinical background and research onheart disease during last three decades, into a single book. It convinces, even the skeptics, the deeply troubling, at the same time not very well understood problem of the twin epidemics of heart disease and diabetesamong the people worldwide and particularly among the South Asian population. It discusses with great clarity as towhy South Asians should be tested and treated differently. This excellent book by an very well known cardiologist in the field of heart disease among the South Asians, written ina easily understandable language, is a must read for all South Asians in diaspora as well as in their native land.

5-0 out of 5 stars How to Beat the Heart Disease Epidemic Among South Asians
Very informational book-ideal for medical and non-medical audience. Details on research and the statistics adds to the value of the book. Wish there was a workbook for people to keep a track of their life style changes and the benefits. Loved the recipes and nutritional information. Highly recommend it to South Asians in America and also in their native countries.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Silent Epidemic
This book by Drs' Enas and Kannan is a superb effort at highlighting the silent epidemic affecting south asians. It does yeoman service by drawing attention not only to factors that affect this population but provides information and resources which help laymen and physicians alike understand the disease process. It goes a step further than traditional books by devoting half the volume to educate readers on prevention of heart disease. The format and not just the content makes the book a pleasure to read. Once I picked it up I just had to race through it at one sitting. However, since then I have gone back to the book on numerous occasions only to be impressed by the amount of information that it provides.
This book is a must have for all, physicians and lay people alike, not just those from south asia. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. James Thogtam: A classic book for those in the field
Dr. James Thogtam: A classic book for those in the field

WITH THE SEVENTH EDITION OF BRAUNwald's Heart Disease, the editors have accomplished an impressive feat: improving on an already classic text. With 36 new chapters and full-color figures and photographs, the new edition is substantially altered in both content and appearance. Compared with the rather limited color-plate photographs in the sixth edition, the color photographs, figures, and tables in each chapter significantly enhance the new text.

Informative chapters on the foundations of cardiovascular medicine remain, including detailed discussions of history taking, physical examination, and electrocardiography, topics often overshadowed in an era of rapidly progressive medical technology.....

The seventh edition of Braunwald's Heart Disease would be a worthy addition to the medical library of any practicing cardiologist, cardiology fellow, or health care practitioner with a special interest in heart disease.

CNN's Larry King has written a celebrity show and tell about discovering and overcoming heart disease. Eighteen first-person accounts, including King's triple-bypass surgery, are paired with advice from expert cardiologists. Each story is used to illustrate key aspects of how to spot, diagnose and survive heart disease. "When your body and mind heal," promises the resilient King, "get ready for a hell of a ride." Journalist Mike Wallace report of his two heart surgeries while his cardiologist details the effects of slow heartbeats and how to live with a pacemaker.Actress Kate Jackson's description of her surgery to repair a hole in her heart is linked with a discussion of women and heart disease. Walter Cronkite's tale of grilling his physician before his bypass surgery is followed by five questions to ask your cardiologist. The account of Regis Philbin's reluctant angioplasty is enlarged by a description of revolutionary tests to detect heart disease.Through his careful choice of narratives and expert commentary, King describes the many faces of heart disease (from runaway rapid heartbeat to blocked arteries) as well as the heart smart strategies for survival. Even the name-dropping tidbits, (Cher calls Kate Jackson; Arnold calls Regis Philbin) and the occasional live-for-today cliches do not detract from the sensible and wide ranging advise King has collected. In our celebrity-driven culture, he is wise to tap the rich and famous to teach these life-saving truths about heart disease. --Barbara MackoffBook Description
The public eventually hears when a celebrity is stricken with a life-threatening illness. But what we don't get to share are the intimate details of their private anguish and personal treatment. 4-0 out of 5 stars Larry King on Heart Disease
I am sure your must have heard about this author.Yes, he is THE Larry King of Larry King Live on CNN.In this book the author tells us how a couple of famous people who were suffering from heart diseases were able to conquer their conditions. It isreviewed by one of the doctors who operated Mr King. This book is just like his show and has a lot of inspirational stories.

Overall, it's a great feel-good type of book. Just like my new beverage of choice called s o y f e e. It's made from soybeans that you brew just like coffee. Caffeine-free, you'll find it at www. S oycoffe e.com.

5-0 out of 5 stars Packed with inspirational healing stories
Walter Cronkite, Peggy Fleming, and others are all sufferers from heart disease who have triumphed over their conditions: Larry King tackles the nation's number 1 killer in Taking On Heart Disease, reflecting both his own heart attack and bypass experiences and a survey of how heart disease may be confronted and avoided. Packed with inspirational healing stories, Taking On Heart Disease provides plenty of case histories of triumph and offers inspiration for recovery.

2-0 out of 5 stars More like gossip than wisdom
Talk show host Larry King's book opens with a foreword written by the surgeon who performed a bypass operation on him. Unfortunately, Mr. King's book reads more like a penance for past sins than a book about heart disease. If you need company to wallow in regret over the excesses of the American lifestyle, this may be the book for you. But if you're searching for something new about heart disease that doesn't just echo the conventional line delivered by your neighborhood family doctor or bypass surgeon, don't look in Mr. King's book.

As a man in the popular media, you'd expect Mr. King to have a sixth sense regarding what is truly newsworthy. Mr. King's book may have been newsworthy in 1980, but in 2004 it is little more than a personal catharsis.

5-0 out of 5 stars Valuable for Heart Patients and their families
Larry has done more in this book for heart patients and thir friends and families than any professional counselor could do. You read and feel the fears of well known people and you understand, through the words of their cardiologists, what has taken place. This book should be handed to every heart patient who walks into a cardiologist's office for a test or exam. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Complete information for specialists
I used this book during the preparation of my thesis. For this purpose, it was sometimes too detailed and complex. I think this book will be helpfull for congenital heart specialists, since all information is included for every heart defect, very well-organized. Every chapter on a certain malformation includes the history, physical appearance, auscultation, additional investigations and a clear summary. A lot of illustrations of ECG's or x-rays and pictures clarify the text. The book is (as the title says) specifically focussed on the clinical recognition of a malformation. For other purposes, such as studying longer-term outcome, the book does not provide the information. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Spirituality cannot be attained without a pure heart
An amazing book by Sheikh Hamzah Yousof, I recommend it to anyone who is seeking an understanding of the many different types of diseases of the heart and how to cure them. The book reveals that diseases do not only appear in physical form, but more importantly inflicts the heart, mind and soul of an individual. These types of diseases are extremely widespread and inflict every one of us without our knowledge.Truly, humanity is suffering from these diseases, just by looking at the tribulations that is befallen humanity today, from wars, violence, suicides, diminishing family values, on and on...

From the original text of Imam Mawloud translated by Sheikh Hamzah, it shows me that Imam Mawloud was a wise and enlightened being who was very eloquent in his writing and poetry. Although Sheikh Hamza has done an amazing job in his translation,I only wished that he would have kept the original Arabic text of Imam Mawloud's poetry, as the beauty in his writing disappears in translation.however, I do give this book a strong 5 Stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars A PURE HEART
I give this book a 5 , because it covers so much about the heart. its a most have for anyone trying to became a better person and get closer to the AL MIGHTY.

5-0 out of 5 stars Truly Inspiring
I think this book is great for Non-Muslims more than it is for Muslims because it sheds light on the beauty and gentle ways of true Muslims and their ways of life. It asks people to look within themselves and accept who they are first and foremost and then start eliminating the negative aspects and characteristics in ones self in order to live in harmony with a clean and healthy heart. This book has inspired me and shown me how easy it is to clean my heart from all the anger and greed. It has shown me that gratitude is the best way to live life, being grateful for every little thing i have as opposed to feeling bad and angry at what i dont have.
This is a must read for everybody seeking to better their lives.

5-0 out of 5 stars Everyone should own a copy!
This book is very well written. It addresses the diseases of the heart and ways to get rid of them. I think every human being should have a copy of this book in his or her library. I recommend reading the whole book at least once and then using it as a reference from time to time.

Book Description
Nobody lived a healthier or more active life. She was the juicing guru to the stars. She exercised and ate right. But at forty-seven Pamela Serure, exhausted, in pain, and with diagnoses ranging from menopause to anxiety, discovered that she had heart disease. Lifestyle and diet couldn’t correct what her genes had determined. With two days to get her affairs in order, Pamela prepared for triple bypass surgery to correct three almost completely clogged arteries.

What the doctors missed and what most women don’t seem to know is that heart disease is the number-one killer of American women. It kills more women than all the cancers combined. Traditional markers of heart disease, such as high cholesterol, may not apply to women. As a result, doctors consistently misdiagnose female patients with anxiety, digestive distress, or symptoms of menopause.

Blindsided by her sudden bypass surgery, Pamela Serure turned her life-altering experience into a personal mission to help educate other women about this dangerous and far-reaching disease. In this book Pamela opens the door to her recovery process and tells readers what the doctors won’t. She has found experts to offer advice so that readers will know exactly what to look for and what tests to demand. Women share stories of how they persisted in having the cardiac tests run that saved their lives and others share stories of women they lost because of a missed diagnosis. Comforting, funny, and soulful, this is the book that will empower women to take charge of their heart health. As Pamela says, “These days heart disease has all my attention, as it should have yours.” ... Read more
