5-0 out of 5 stars The cases grabbed me like a mystery novel

I am a fan of Drs. Webb and Gatzoulis.I had the pleasure to shadow Dr. Webb in his clinic and his case conference when he was in Toronto and it was one of the most memorable clinical experience.Reading his new book remind a me of the great time I had with him during my training years.

The cases are very interesting and they are presented in a very engaging manner. There are some simple cases, but many of the cases are difficult and involve complex clinical decision making. The cases read like a detective novel. The case number 10 by Dr Broberg, straddling of the tricuspid valve, was particularly memorable because the case was complex, decision was even more complex (involving all subspecialties of cardiology), the outcome was gut wrenching, but after finishing the case I gained a lot of cardiology pearls.I admire the writers for their courage in presenting cases with suboptimal outcome, which are very informative for the readers.

Beginners in congenital heart disease will learn a lot from the focused discussion points: so no need to worry if you are a true beginner, but it would be optimal to read Dr. webb's chapter in Braunwald Heart textbook first. Even for people with casual interest in congenital heart disease (e.g. Adult general cardiology fellows) the discussions of ekg and physical exam findings in each case will make you a better cardiac clinician. But for clinicians who deal with congenital heart disease on a daily basis, this is an important "not-to-be-missed" landmark publication.

The echo, Cath and CT/MRI images are clear and informative.

I thank the authors for this very engaging book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars LIFE-SAVING Information
I am going to keep this review short, simple and to the point.

FORGET the antiquated "cholesterol test" that most doctors use today (that only look at TOTAL, LDL, HDL cholesterols and triglycerides). This "ancient" test does NOT tell you what you REALLY need to know.

"Heart Smart" contains information about the MANY different risk factors for heart attacks and strokes.

Few people (including most Internists / General Practitioners, and many Cardiologists) know too little or nothing at all about these risk factors.

You or a loved one could die from or suffer an incapacitating heart attack or stroke that could have been prevented with early detection of these risk factors.

Read "Heart Smart", get ALL of the tests (can be done easily) and know for certain what your risk factor(s) are for heart attack / stroke.

If you choose to ignore the information in this book, you do so at your own risk, and will have only yourself to blame if you suffer a heart attack or stroke...IF you live through it!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Some useful information, some less so. Deserves equal consideration with the current best-sellers on CVD.
Having read the books by Ignarro, Esselstyne (currently the best-seller), and Sinatra (not Frank), and bogging down a bit in Ornish's lengthy precedent (I'm over half way through), I decided to read DeVane's book.In some ways, it's the most practical and informative, enlightening the reader about all of the latest diagnostic tests and devices as well as the advantages and disadvantages of various drugs to "modify" cholesterol levels (he's careful to distinguish among the three cholesterol types as well as the medications themselves, since a statin drug, while effective at lowering bad cholesterol, is considerably less so at raising good cholesterol, where niacin suddenly becomes the weapon of choice).

I say "weapon" because DeVane's approach is the most aggressive of the five books, at times the most alarmist. He starts you off with a heart attack or stroke, counting the precious seconds elapsing before the ambulance or defibrillator arrive as meanwhile the muscles of the heart and/or cells of the brain die or suffer irreparable injury. It's a quick attention-getter, and not a little scary. But of the five books, he's the most up-to-date with a lot of information about testing, pros and cons, new mechanical devices for accomplishing such testing and the ups and downs and hows of each.

In the last quarter of the book, a more human voice begins to emerge from the pages, as the author talks about his father's highly premature death from a heart attack and proceeds, like the other books, with his list of recommendations. Here's where one book may be more advisable than five for the reader who wishes to take proactive measures whether as a preventive measure or therapeutic one.All of these author-doctors agree on the main culprits (saturated fats) and the best defense (omega-3 fatty acids and exercise), but the discrepancies among the five when it comes to the details can be maddening.Whereas Esselstyne appears to loathe (to put it mildly) all oils--above all, fish oil (merely more animal fat)--DeVane can't get enough of it, and would have you slather your insides with it.Whereas Ignarro prescribes Vitamin E as one of his 7 essential defenses/cures (L-Arginnine being the most important), DeVane says don't bother: no evidence whatsoever than Vitamin E (as a supplement) ever helped anyone with a heart condition and, in fact, may even have harmed some misled patients.Whereas DeVane praises nuts (and, above all, peanuts), Esselstyne appears to condemn them as so much solidified fatty food, certainly no cure for out-of-whack cholesterol levels (I have a hunch which of the two authors would be endorsed by Jimmy Carter).

All of the books have their strengths and weaknesses.Ornish's can be recommended for its comprehensive approach, not excessively focused on the physical at the expense of the personal, human and spiritual.DeVane's is closest to the recommendations and practices of the A.M.A. and other "official," recognized heart-healthy agencies.

If there's a problem with medical books in general it's that, given the moment-by-moment permutations of actual experience, they're dated the moment they've been published (talk to a med student about the usefulness and street value of last year's med text), but the author practically feels compelled (even if unconsciously) to embrace his positions as stated in the book regardless. The phenomenon is especially true of "political books"--for example, written discourse that is pro or con Obama and National Health Care reform.Yet some crusader comes on another news show condemning the President for not bringing us the program for which the majority of Americans voted him into office--and the author (ANY author), always in full view of his publisher, is forced to tunnel-vision the issue because that's what his own written words, his calcified language, rather than his living thoughts, has told him is "the truth."The increased pressure on authors to "sell" their books--now a public relations requirement--has made matters worse than ever (I think we began to see the deleterious effects of the "new media" beginning with once-respected scientists/experts-turned-book-hustlers such as Linus Pauling and Adele Davis).

So some of DeVane's recommendations are bound to sound out-of-date just as some others will revise the dated pronouncements of other currently trendy heart savants.Who are you going to believe? The problem must be especially troublesome to those who don't understand science--or religion, or theology and faith. All of the foregoing are frequently seen as "absolutes"--or as fields of reference capable of yielding authoritative yes or no, black and white answers.(Yeah, sure. Make room for Falwell, then Glen Beck, then the next loony or, if we're lucky, at least a well-intentioned Wizard of Oz.)By contrast, DeVane encourages the reader to be aggressive and pro-active, demanding an initial program of cholesterol testing every other week.(Now if only the cardiologists and G.P.s would be so cooperative.)

But this is America--a free country, even if we're currently behind in terms of health care (and a healthy population). And you're free to read the various remedies, consolidate the ones offered in various best-selling books on Amazon, or hitch your wagon to just one of them and ride it all the way. (We try to be rational but, in the end, make a Kierkegardian leap of faith or, as is more often the case, let events transpire and hope for the best, since in the late stage of an illness that we may not even have realized we had until those critical hours, few of us will be clear-headed enough to decide on what might strike us as the best course of action.)All we can pray for at that point is an informed and competent, caring physician (along with a better national health care program).Still, as DeVane warns at the end of his book, he's only one physician; the other one is necessarily the reader.Better to keep that latter physician clearly in focus, assisted by books such as this, rather than become sidetracked by a political debate that shouldn't even be one.

[Not a popular review, I see.As I said, it's a free country, but whatever your opinions, I hope you read the book.In a matter this serious, knowledge counts far more than personal likes and dislikes.]

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Source of Vital Information
This book breaks down the causes of cardio-vascular disease, the treatments including tests, drugs and alternative supplements and foods.Easy to understand even without prior knowledge of cardiology and pathology.I highly recommend this book to anyone serious about avoiding the development of cardiovascular disease, reducing the damage of it or even reversing it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Smart Book for Everyone
A Cardiologist writes this book in lay-man's terms. It is well-written at an appropriate level for a reasonably intelligent person. Dr. DeVane explains concepts well, makes the topic interesting and includes new advances. His holistic approach is practical and easy to read. I buy this book frequently and give it for birthday and Christmas gift giving.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK AND A GREAT READ!!
This is the best book I've read that covers heart disease detection, prevention, and reversal PERIOD.A mandatory read if you have heart disease in your family!! I've read many of these types of books because I have heart disease in my family and have been dealing with genetic high cholesterol my whole life.Everything you need to know about heart disease in one book...it's like a complete handbook on heart disease.

The first part deals with what it is actually like to have a heart attack and what to do to stay alive...this is worth the price of the book alone. The author believes that absolutely NO ONE should ever have a heart attack much less die from one with a little proactive work from you and your doctor.

The book outlines all the various ways to properly test the likelihood of heart disease (just one example: Don't just take a cholesterol and stress test; but actually testing the size of your body's cholesterol may be more valuable to know since you can have a heart attack with as little as 30% blockage and traditional stress test only detects blockage of 70% or greater) This book is absolutely full of this type of useful information which can keep you around for a very long time.

Also, I really liked the way this book has all the up-to-date medial detection and medical treatment technology and goes way beyond the basic stuff you see in all the other medical publications (Details the different types of cholesterol tests, stress tests, heart scan technology, etc.).Also runs through the good points and bad points from a cardiologist standpoint of the more popular diets that people use (instead of just singling out fat as the culprit like every other medical publication.)

This book is technical but simple for the lay person to understand because of the easy explanations Dr. Devane uses. The book gives you today's most up to date tools to PROPERLY detect and reverse heart disease.Just knowing all the facts that are out there makes it easier to motivate yourself to take control and responsibility over making proper decisions if you or someone you love has to deal with heart disease.

GREAT BOOK AND A GREAT READ!!

WINNER OF THE BOOKS FOR A BETTER LIFE AWARD

One out of every two women will die of heart disease. It is the single greatest health risk for women today–more than stroke and all cancers combined. In the course of her practice, and as chief of Women’s Cardiac Care at New York’s Lenox Hill Hospital, Dr. Nieca Goldberg has come to a startling realization: Women experience heart disease in a fundamentally different way than men do.

The physiology of a woman’s heart attack is not the same as a man’s, the symptoms of heart disease and signs of impending heart attack differ for women, and once heart disease has been recognized, women often do not get the treatment and medications they require. Now here are detailed, age-specific programs that give women the facts and the guidance they need to recognize, treat, and prevent heart disease, including

• how you can rate your risk of heart disease
• the effects of menopause on your heart
• risk factors you can change–starting today
• a heart-healthy exercise plan that works for you
• a complete guide to heart-healthy supplements
• the truth about hormone replacement therapy and the heart
• recovering from a heart attack or surgery

I am a registered nurse, and I really enjoyed reading this book.It was written for the layperson, but I found it extremely clarifying and useful as well.Although women are the target audience, the basic heart information is also good for men.It talks about anatomy and physiology of the heart, info on various heart conditions, cardiac medications, cardiac tests and medical procedures, cardiac rehabilitation, and finally how to keep your heart healthy: through exercise, nutritious diet, stratagies for de-stressing, and quitting smoking. She also incorporates scientific research throughout the book, but uses it wisely.I highly recommend reading this book if you are interested in your heart health. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Very practical book!
Very oriented to the main topics on every chapter... I wished it would have been edited with coloured pictures.

3-0 out of 5 stars Incomplete
No mention of ME (CFIDS).
Brauwald's larger volume is very inaccurate re ME (CFIDS). Advises exercise which can cause severe worsening of the disease. Conflates ME (CFIDS) and the symptom of chronic fatigue. No mention of Dr. Lerner's studies of cardiomyopathy or Prof. Leonard's publication on cardiac disease mortality in ME. When ME patients die of heart disease, it is, on average, at an age 25 years younger than that of the whole population of people who die of heart disease.

5-0 out of 5 stars Appropriately challenging and high-yield question book.
This question book is a great way to review the important points out of the Braunwald's text for those that do not have the time luxury to read the full text. The questions are referenced and state the page from which the question was derived in the text book. The questions are clinically relevant and very useful on a daily basis. As a Cardiology fellow, I recommend it to others in training.

3-0 out of 5 stars Well written, but...
Answers to the questions are well written and informative. The main drawback is that the format of the questions in the book do not reflect board style questions. Therefore, it is a good book for general assessment of knowledge, but not optimal as a board review question book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent review for Recertification
Quite comprehensive for a review. The questions are very appropriate, but most helpful are the thorough answers. Well written and accurate, (unlike several other review texts.)
Comprehensive enough that it is unnecessary to refer to Braunwalds big text book, but useful references are included in the answers.
This is a relatively low cost, useful resource, especially for those of us who suffer through q10 year recert.... ... Read more

Written in plain English by a board-certified cardiologist and a clinical psychologist who specializes in heart disease, this is a practical “what-to-expect” guide that will help readers cope with their confusion, fear, and lack of information, as well as decode what doctors really mean when they describe certain cardiac procedures, treatments, and medications. The authors clearly explain these issues so that anyone who is at risk of heart disease, or who already has it, will have a deeper understanding of what a heart attack is, how to deal with the hospital experience, and how to interact more effectively with their doctors. In addition, the book offers insights into often-neglected aspects of the disease such as the role a patient’s spouse and family play in recovery and what women should be aware of in the diagnostic phase of their treatment. Finally, the authors supply workable motivational tools—an effective treatment model anyone can understand and use—to help make important lifestyle changes in order to get better, stay better, and avoid invasive and expensive procedures in the future.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Real Thing
I have a strong family history of heart disease and I was drawn to the title of the book. While reading the book it occurred to me that this is how medical books should be written. It felt like the authors were actually talking about me and to me. It was amazingly easy and even fun to read but also provided the information that none of my doctors ever talked about. The chapter on diagnostic test was perfect. It validated my experiences with heart tests and I liked how they talked about the "humiliation factor." Most importantly, I liked how they recommend treating one risk factor/problem at a time and not to overwhelm the patient with "you better do this list right now." No Bull was simple, to the point, informative, and a great read.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is SOOOO great!
It felt like these authors were sitting in my living room talking straight to me about how to handle the health issues that my father is facing. In the 3 hours it took me to read this book, I got more information than I did from all the research I have done online and in the library. The whole book simply makes good sense. These authors delivered it simply and effectively!GREAT READ! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Life-Changing Book
This is a great book! The recipes are simply delicious--I never have been able to bake bread before and have it turn out, but the whole wheat recipe here comes out beautifully and it's delicious. Some of my favorite recipes are the banana barley loaf, the lentil loaf, the oat pancakes and topping (I used apples rather than pears for the topping), the corn bread, the lentil soup, the marina and pasta sauces, the Indian Subzi. There are too many to name them all!And too, I use the advice in this book to convert older favorite recipes with unhealthy ingredients to heart healthy yet delicious alternatives.I love the approach too, with a focus on not only nutrition and fitness but also emotional and spiritual health--I found that once I was used to not adding salt to food, and consistently followed the advice in the book, I no longer craved foods as I used to, achieved my target weight, and felt better than I ever had in my life. I have never had heart disease, diabetes, or high blood pressure, but all are very prevalent in my family. I wanted to do something to lose weight and to keep myself fit.I think the advice in this book is for everyone, those with heart disease and those who want to keep their hearts healthy.Heal Your Heart is an awesome book that can change your life. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, but a newer version is available
I bought L carnitine and the heart, The CoQ10 phenomenon and The Sinatra Solution by Dr Stephen T. Sinatra all at once.

I was very impressed by Sinatra's ideas and the way his books are put together. They are very easy to read for laypeople, but also contain very complex and detailed information for those that would like it. There is also a lot of useful information given on dosages and types of supplements and how they differ and which are best and the information is all well referenced.

As it turned out, my buying of the first 2 books was unnecessary, as 'The Sinatra Solution' book is a summary of both of them and also slightly more up to date.

The information in this book is ESSENTIAL for anyone that has M.E., or any other mitochondrial or cardiac or neurological disorder. (As is explained in the HFME paper 'CoQ10 (ubiquinol), L carnitine, D ribose and M.E.'). I can't recommend L carnitine, magnesium and ubiquinol more. I hope patients will look into them and read the facts rather than just rejecting them because they are not yet totally 'mainstream.' This has far more to do with substances like carnitine being unpatentable than any lack of scientific support for these supplements!

'The Sinatra Solution' is an ideal book for patients and also for patients to give to their doctors. I highly recommend it.

Jodi Bassett, The Hummingbirds' Foundation for M.E.

4-0 out of 5 stars heart protection
Another heart book that I have found to be very informative for helping to protect or possibly heal the heart.

5-0 out of 5 stars Quick and Easy life-saver
It is customary that an author is asked to fill 250 pages worth of content for a paperback.Sometimes, the author manages to convince the publisher to agree for something like 200 pages. At other times, if he/she is well established, he/she can even fill up the pages with "blanks", like de Bono did in "Simplicity".

But this book is 49 pages (leaving out the table of contents, references, index, etc.) of goodness. And I love it.

This book has a "life-saving" message about benefits of L-Carnitine based supplementation program. Some important details are as follows:
* Inside every cell in our body, there are components called mitochondria; heart cells have three to ten times more mitochondria than cells from other parts of the body
* You can think of mitochondria as a cell's power plants.
* Mitochondria start failing with aging.Failure in the energy production mechanism leads to many degenerative diseases.
* L-Carnitine helps in mitochondrial energy production by transporting free fatty acids (fuel) into them
* L-Carnitine also seem to assist in removing the spent fuel from mitochondria.
* Once the fuel is inside the mitochondria, other supplements like Coenzyme Q10 (a vitamin like substance), minerals, etc. help in burning the fuel.
* Supplementing L-Carnitine, along with Q10 and few other minerals/vitamins (a) improve the condition of heart muscles, (b) reduce cholesterol and triglyceride, (c) increase the general energy levels and (d) more.

I read this book several months ago and started a supplementation program similar to the one recommended in this book.Within a month of starting the program, my triglyceride level had dropped to less than half (from very high pre-treatment levels).I expect that the levels to further go down (and, perhaps, normalize) in the next two months.

The concepts in this book are now widely accepted by many doctors world over. None of these recommendations can produce any harm (provided, your supplements are not contaminated). Given these, it is very sad indeed that vast majority of the suffering public is unaware and respected press keeps talking the supplementation programs down.

5-0 out of 5 stars Everyone over 40 needs this book
Drs. Stephen and Jan Sinatra lead the pack in cardiologists with the patient's best interests at heart - pun intended! They have done excellent research and exhibt a progressive attitude regarding the use of replenishing the body's own elements, which diminish with age, for reinforcing our natural bio-stasis.They explain why we develop deficiencies in essential amino acids, the consequences, and what to do about it.I have taken the advice in the section on Carnitine and Coenzyme Q!10 here in full, and the benefits are undeniable.
If you take prescription drugs for any cardiac or circulatory condition, you need to be informed! You can read this in a couple of short sittings.

5-0 out of 5 stars L-Carnitine and the Heart
