5-0 out of 5 stars great book!
I bought this book for my husband, he has CHF. It took him a couple of days to read it. The book is very very educational, now he knows exactly what he is dealing with, and he is taking better care for himself.
He made some changes and he feels better already. Thank you!

5-0 out of 5 stars Heart Failure Success
If you are dealing with heart failure and feel like no one understands this is the book for you. This is the book to have in your library don't be without it if you have heart failure it is the line of death and life you need to beat it for as long as possible.

5-0 out of 5 stars Survive longer
My father is 88 years old and hates going to the doctor or showing weakness in any way.He went to the hospital for heart failure, even had a stroke while there & was released diagnosed with chronic heart failure/condition.It's difficult to tell him anything but I bought him this book and he loves it.Says it will help him survive longer and he found it easy to read and understand.

5-0 out of 5 stars Help for those suffering with heart failure
This book is truly informative and helpful.Reading it has empowered me to take steps to be able to live with the frighteneing diagnosis of heart failure. The suggestions given are practical and helpful. By reading the book, I was able to find support groups on line--most helpful. I heartily (pun intended!) recommend it for anyone who has been diagnosed with heart failure.

4-0 out of 5 stars The need to know basics of heart failure
I bought this for my wife who has postpartum cardiomyopathy so we could really understand what the cardiologist was saying and doing.Prior to reading it we had been concerned that our cardiologist wasn't engaging us in many "standard" heart failure treatments that we had researched which might improve her daily quality of life. This book really helped my wife and I understand all the CHF jargon and, most importantly, what the heart meds do and how they are supposed towork in the body.Because of this book and other research we have engaged another cardiologist for a second opinion and learned that there are indeed other treatments and therapies available to us.Net Net - this book helps you engage in knowledgeable conversations with your doctor which is key to your survival and successful treatment.
4 stars only because I wish the author had expounded more on some of the topics. ... Read more

Product Description

Heart failure -- the expression alone is scary. The idea that the blood-pumping organ in our chest can struggle, stutter, or suddenly stop is deeply disconcerting. But for those who get the diagnosis, the future is not necessarily bleak. With the right treatments and a healthy lifestyle that includes exercise and good nutrition, many people with heart failure can improve their condition and live well.

Heart failure expert Edward K. Kasper, M.D., teams with journalist -- and survivor -- Mary Knudson to give readers an honest account of this misunderstood condition. The authors explain the complex science of heart failure and look critically at the care available.

Living Well with Heart Failure, the Misnamed, Misunderstood Condition will help readers understand:• The causes of the condition• Normal and abnormal heart rhythms• How to recognize symptoms and when to seek treatment• Which diagnostic tests to expect • The best treatments for different types of heart failure• How pacemakers work• The advantages and disadvantages of implantable cardioverter defibrillators • How to be safer in a hospital• What exercises result in increased heart, leg, arm, and core body strength • What foods to eat and what to avoid

Informed by the shared knowledge of doctor and patient, those diagnosed with heart failure and their loved ones will learn how to effectively manage the condition in this comprehensive and compassionate guide.

5-0 out of 5 stars Executes its purpose well
A bad ticker doesn't mean a bad life. "Living Well with Heart Failure: The Misnamed, Misunderstood Condition" is a complete and comprehensive guide to heart failure, which Edward K. Kasper & Mary Knudson guide readers through for a fuller and more complete understanding of the matter. Causes, diagnosis, treatments, and how to live well with it, "Living Well with Heart Failure" executes its purpose well. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Smart about the Heart
Before I read this book, I'd always thought that "heart failure" meant a rapidly fatal condition. Not only did I learn how wrong I was but I came away with a whole new appreciation for how well medicine can deal with heart failure, admiration for those who've learned to live with it, and some of the best information I've read anywhere about how to care for this amazing and vital organ. The authors, renowned heart specialist Dr. Edward Kasper and award-winning medical journalist Mary Knudson, have created an exceptionally helpful guide for people who've been diagnosed with heart failure - but also for those of who just want some reminders of why we want to take care of our hearts and how to do it best. And thanks to Knudson's clear and compelling writing, the book is a stand out among other such guides. Highly recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars CoQ10 is essential to treat heart failure
People suffering from heart failure almost invariably are deficient in coenzyme Q10 -- generally abbreviated as CoQ10. Humans make CoQ10 in our bodies, but as we age our ability to make this essential nutrient often declines. Extreme decline can result in heart failure. Although it's not commonly known, statin drugs -- used to lower cholesterol -- can also cause deficiency of CoQ10 and result in heart failure. Fortunately, CoQ10 is readily available as a nutritional supplement which often can reverse the symptoms of heart failure. People taking statin drugs and anyone with symptoms of heart failure should take this essential nutrient and read the book The Coenzyme Q10 Phenomenon by Dr. Steven Sinatra. ... Read more

The book explains the pathophysiology, molecular mechanisms, clinical manifestations, and therapy of heart failure in an integrated, reader-friendly manner that is accessible to both clinicians and basic scientists. More than 100 illustrations, most created for this book by the authors, complement the text.

This edition has been completely reorganized. Chapters describe the hemodynamic basis for the clinical manifestations of heart failure; the neurohumoral responses in heart failure and key signaling pathways that mediate functional responses; the proliferative responses in failing hearts; the cellular and molecular abnormalities in the failing heart; the rationale for various therapeutic approaches; and the management of specific groups of patients. The chapters on therapy have been written by a noted clinician, Marvin A. Konstam.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well written and easy to read
This is a unique book, it focuses on heart failure and is very accurately described by it's title. I found it to be surprisingly easy to read. The strength of this book is that it does a good job integrating backgroundinfo on normal cardiac physiology and molecular biology with thealterations that occur during heart failure. The author often employs aphilosphical approach with many quotes from philosophy and theater that aremeant to give the reader "something to chew on" before embarkingon the chapter at hand. Some may find this approach distracting, however Ipersonally found it refreshing. The book does a good job covering theimportant basic aspects of heart failure; classifications, cardiacphysiology, E-C coupling, signal transduction, etc. Best of all the book isactually in a user friendly size, about 6" x 10", about 1 pound, and 380 pages, so it may be carried around with relative ease. Bottom lineis that this will serve as a good guide to understand the basic principlesof heart failure and provides an avenue integrate molecular biology withcardiac pathophysiology. It doesn't have all the details, but will prepareyou to seek out the info that you need in an intelligent fashion frommedical databases. ... Read more
