1-0 out of 5 stars My child has had 2 heart transplants
I have read the book and being a parent of a child who was borm with a SEVERE conginetal heart defect who had surgery at one day
old andlater at 18 months had a heart transplant then a year and a half ago at age 11hadANOTHER transplant.I am TRULY APPALLED and HORRIFIED by this book.I was given this book by the transplant teamat the hospital we use to review as they
wereconsidered giving the book to new patients waiting HOWEVER I would not recommend this book to ANYONE who's child is preparing for a transplant as it paints a very warped view of the whole process.
Having a child with a heart transplant is quiet chalenging at times and yes there are MANY clinic apointments and heart caths.
and ups and downs BUT things are notby any means the way they are portrayed in this book.I am sure ANYparent who's child is waiting for a transplant will do MUCH better by actually talking to other parents who's child has gone through the process than by reading this..In my opinion the author just had a "pity"party for them selves through out the whole book... ... 58. Knife to the Heart: Story of Transplant Surgery
by Tony Stark

Average Customer Review: 5.0 out of 5 stars

5-0 out of 5 stars The best history of organ transplantation I've ever read
It tells a number of stories I had never heard, like the baby born without a brain who nearly became the first human heart donor a year before it actually happened, and failed attempts dating back to the turn of the last century.Unlike some other books, it's quite easy to read and is not biased for or against certain surgeons or institutions, with the exception of Dr. Christiaan Barnard who appeared to be a real jerk regardless of how good a surgeon he might have been.

This book was the basis of a BBC series of the same name which aired on some PBS outlets in this country, hosted by Connie Chung, and was one of the most interesting programs I have ever seen on television. To my astonishment, it is not available on video or DVD.

There is a chapter about the discovery of cyclosporine, which revolutionized transplant surgery, and another about xenotransplantation, the placement of non-human organs in people which has proven to be a dismal failure in almost all cases.

If you are interested in this subject, you should read this book. You will learn something. ... Read more
