Learn about natural solutions and how to put them to work for you in Healthy Digestion the Natural Way. Dr. D. 4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource, but questions remain
I thought the angels had answered my prayers when I saw this book at my local pharmacy. It is packed absolutely chock full with great, easy to understand information about digestion, the mind-gut connection, and various digestive diseases. I know "natural medicine" seems crunchy granola and therefore easy to dismiss, but logic (and many well-designed studies) make many of the recommendations in this book hard to refute, and definitely worth trying. As someone who has been to dozens of traditional doctors and has still not found relief for my gut, being given more information and options for treating these distressing problems is a godsend and not to be sneezed at. However, after reading it cover-to-cover, I still have questions.
My main issue: I have symptoms of several of the problems talked about in the book, and unfortunately the treatments for these problems are often contradictory. I really should eat more yogurt and other cultured products for the beneficial flora--unless I have candidiasis or a food allergy. I should eat whole grains for the fiber--unless I'm allergic or have candidiasis. I should drink water right before I go to bed--unless I have reflux. The list goes on and on. I have NO IDEA which of my stomach problems I should tackle first and which things I can try for one problem that won't significantly worsen another problem. I find I'm so confused that I really want to visit the clinic that Ms. Berkson talks about working at, but she gives no contact info in the book and I was unable to find anything online. Barring that, I would have really appreciated some information for how to FIND a clinic like that one, or a doctor who will work with me to find holistic and natural remedies.
Having said that, I still think this book is an excellent resource that is well-written, well-organized, and well worth reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent health information
One of the most helpful, informative books I have read. The suggestions really work.Highly recommend as an aid in healing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book if you have IBS or GERD or other Digestive Problems ...
This book is very thorough. It covers in depth the right foods, the wrong foods, what certain foods, supplements, and drugs do to digestive tract. It covers some history of digestive diseases, food alergies, home treatment, etc.The author makes no promises that this information will solve your particular digestive problem, however, she present the information honestly.

I recommend this book highly!

4-0 out of 5 stars Covers all symptoms
The author seems very knowledgeble on all aspects of digestive problems. Learned a lot.Throws so much at you that it is hard to assimilate it all.Worth reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent down-to-earth approach to digestion
Finally a helpful book anyone can understand.Lots of informative sections on everything from gallbladder attachs, IBS, to ulcers.
I often refer to this book whenever I am not feeling well.I have owned it for a year now and will never part with it.

I also recommend NO MORE HEARTBURN, by Sherry Rogers, M.D.

Why don't doctors spend more time educating their patients about healthy digestion and bowel function? If we all understood more, maybe we'd eat better.Everytime I'd gone to the doctor with pains, they'd shoved Prilosec, Nexium, or some other "P" antacid on me.I only got worse.Once I began following the advice in this book by Berkson, the whole world improved. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars End Antacid Dependency
A new remedy came on the market promising 14 days of heartburn relief.I rushed to the drugstore the day it hit the shelves. As advertised, I had 14 days of blissful remission.

My suffering relieved, I relived the days when heartburn was impossible. There was a time I could gulp jalapeno peppers like candy.I could eat a double order of Nick's Famous Coney Island Dogs piled with onions, washed down with a (small) pitcher of beer.I laughed at heartburn.

When the 14 days ended, the heartburn returned with a vengeance, worse than ever.Warning labels proscribed continued use of the remedy. There has to be a better way, I concluded, and started researching heartburn online. This book turned up among the search results.

Following the book's advice, I swallowed a spoonful of fresh lemon juice to combat an attack of heartburn. The lemon juice caused some alarming turmoil in my stomach, but the heartburn subsided.I had some lemons on hand, so I squeezed them into glass bottles of drinking water.I put the juice of half a lemon in each quart bottle.

For the next few months, I drank lemon-spiked water. The heartburn abatedfrom day one.I didn't need to take the acid tablets the book recommends.

I am a beer and coffee lover, so there were occasional flareups.I might forget to take the onions out of my gyro.I fought these flareups with chewable papaya enzyme tablets, which work better than any antacid.

My shopping habits changed.Instead of buying antacids in jumbo bottles, I bought lemons by the 5-pound bag.I squeezed one or two lemons a day into my drinking water.

Eventually, water didn't taste right without lemon.I ended my lemon water addiction. In 3 years, the heartburn has not returned.I've been working on the same bottle of papaya enzyme while eating and drinking practically anything I want (except onions).

I've had a puzzling response from fellow sufferers when I have suggested this book.People don't want to hear about it.They get the idea that it's some kooky, possibly dangerous, health fad.Strangely, they seem reluctant to give up their trusty antacids. They'd rather keep fighting a losing battle than take a chance on a simple cure that sounds counterintuitive.MORE stomach acid will cure heartburn?

I consider myself lucky to be open to alternatives.I turned to this book only because I was so fed up with years of riding the antacid merry-go-round.If you are serious about ending antacid dependence, this book has the answer.

You have to be patient while the authors lay out their theories and research findings. For the doubting medical community and readers leery of jarring unconventional ideas, the authors take several chapters to make their case.

Actual advice for heartburn sufferers can be summarized in a few pages. A few pages that can make your life a whole lot better.

5-0 out of 5 stars try it!
Ive been on hard core acid suppressent drugs for years and had huge problems every time i tried to go off them. Within a week i would have to start taking them again. Anyway i started reading this book and immediately stopped taking the nexium and started using superzymes. I dont quite understand how this works exactly but it does. Im just so relieved to not have to rely on those drugs anymore! Give it a go!

1-0 out of 5 stars I must be the only one...
whose heartburn was made worse by taking more acid.I suspect that much heartburn is caused by stress, which produces TOO MUCH stomach acid. It's always suspicious when EVERY review is 5 stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent read
This book was recommended by my Internist as a must read. He was so right as this book was all about my problems and answered all my questions. The research was a plus as I always check my facts.I in the future I too will recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Revolutionary book!
As a medical student, I've found this book to be spectacularly insightful and important. The book is simple, yet profound in it's explanations. The conclusions are logical and strongly substantiated.

Very important book. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars The book is about alternative medicine rather than heartburn
This book is not about heartburn. The first part of the book is about all manner of digestive problems, and then even about disorders purportedly related to digestive disorders. The second part of the book suggests thatgood diet (especially yogurt), enemas, and something called probiotics willcure all diseases, and therefore incidentally also heartburn (which thushas served only as a marketing come-on to lure in buyers).I believe thereis much to be learned from alternative medicine, but this book actuallyoffers very little rigorous (supported) information. For entertainment, and in closing, let me quote a tidbit."Make the coffee enema byboiling six heaping tablespoons of ground coffee (not instant) in twoquarts of water for fifteen minutes, cooling to a comfortable temperature, and straining..."It is probably a very good idea to let that boilingcoffee cool a little before the anal consumption, but why is instant coffeenot good, and how does this fix heartburn? ... From the supplier: BancorpSouth has lowered the fee for its personal computer online banking service to just 99 cents monthly. When it launched its HomeSite PC service in Nov. Nov. 1996, the holding company offered it at $7.95 every month, just above the national average. Nevertheless, management decided to cut the rate to make the service more attractive to its customers. Through this service, customers can read their account to track their account history, transfer funds from one account to another, make loan payments and transmit e-mail to the bank. It can also write and send checks for paying bills.
