Product Description
A study of the clinical pharmacology and therapy of Helicobacter pylori infection. International contributors provide reviews of the basic pathophysiology, clinical pharmacology and therapeutics of Hp infection, backed in each chapter by extensive bibliographies. The book should be useful to the practising scientist or clinician working in this area, as well as to those who wish to update their awareness of the state of knowledge concerning Hp. Thirteen of the 21 chapters deal with therapeutics, emphasizing the clinical aspects of treatment and providing guidelines regarding the appropriate use of antibiotics, management strategies in the event of therapeutic failure and the like. ... Description:
A novel microchip-based electrokinetically driven immunoassay was developed in this study. The microchip was made of poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS)/glass using photolithography and replica molding. The immunoreaction was between the anti-Helicobacter pylori antibody and the bacterial protein antigen immobilized on the wall of the microchannel. The conditions for antigen immobilization were optimized by adjusting the plasma treatment time. By varying the concentration of blocking buffer, a buffer containing 5% (w/v) bovine serum albumin (BSA) was shown to effectively minimize non-specific binding. Rhodamine-labeled secondary antibody was employed for signal generation. The dependence of the fluorescence signal on the concentrations of both the coating antigen and the primary antibody was obtained. The detection limits for both the coating antigen and the primary antibody are 1ng/@mL. The immunoassay only took 30min when used to detect antibody. The microchips could be prepared and stored at 4^oC for at least 10 days before the immunoassay was performed. With further development on automatic control and detection strategy, this microfluidic immunoassay technique has a potential for point-of-care analysis. ... Read more

Product Description
... Product Description
The fourth meeting in the very successful seriesHelicobacter pylori: Basic Mechanisms to Clinical Cure washeld on the island of Bermuda in late March 2000 and was sponsored byAxcan Pharma. This was only some two years after the third meeting inSan Diego, and it seemed hardly possible that there would be so muchnew information. However, as the contributions in this volume testify, there was plenty of exciting new information with importantimplications for both understanding this infection and for clinicalmanagement. Some of this information was of a fundamental nature, suchas the role of the acid sensitive ureI channel in regulating theinflux of urea and the formation of transported ammonia back in themicrobial perisplasmic space to neutralize acid; the observation ofgenetic polymorphism of the IL-1b gene as an explanation ofachlorhydria and gastric cancer risk in the first-degree relatives ofgastric cancer patients; and the peculiar biochemical andphysiological consequences of the genome of the microorganisms. The format of the meeting, with short fifteen-minute state-of-the-artpresentations by world experts closely involved in Helicobacterresearch followed by ample time for panel discussions, was againfollowed this year. Traditional aspects included detailed study of themicrobial characteristics, the novel Helicobacters, theinteraction with the human host, the peculiarities of the inflammatoryimmune response, the short and long-term mucosal consequences, theeffects on acid secretion, the problem of gastric malignancy, and thetherapeutic possibilities. However, a series of short debates was introduced to highlightcontroversial issues, such as the pathogenic or commensal role of theorganism, the role of virulence factors, the characteristics of theinflammatory immune response, the reversibility of mucosal atrophy andmetaplasia, and the primary or secondary role of quadruple therapy, toname just a few. This provocative approach was very successful andprovided fuel for further in-depth discussions. These debates havebeen included in this book in the form of conventional manuscripts inorder to maintain the shortest possible production time for thepublication of the proceedings. Helicobacter pylori has come a long way since the first meetingin Amelia Island, in 1993, and the science of this organism and theunderstanding of the consequences of the infection have advanced ourknowledge fundamentally and revolutionized our thinking aboutgastrointestinal disease. We now recognize the existence of more thanthirty Helicobacter species, some of which may play asignificant role in human disease. The experience gained through ourinvestigation of H. pylori promises to make a significantcontribution to the future exploration of the possible role ofHelicobacter species in hepatic, biliary, and intestinaldiseases. ... Or is that really a simple matter? The authors summarize combination regimens that have been found to be most effective against the organism and discuss what to do when such treatment fails. They also discuss issues to consider in preventing drug resistance, and they provide tips on improving patient compliance, which is vital to successful treatment. ... Read more

Few areas of practice have been so quickly and thoroughly revolutionized by a single finding as has management of peptic ulcer disease by the 1982 discovery that Helicobacter pylori infection and antral gastritis are strongly related. Empirical therapy for the infection is not recommended; the authors compare several methods of establishing the diagnosis before starting therapy. They also discuss currently used combinations of drugs and who should receive them. ... Read more
