... Product Description
The discovery of Helicobacter pylori in the 1980s has revolutionized the management of peptic ulcer disease, the most recent development being a vaccine against the bacterium. Nevertheless, strategies for the targeting and management of H. pylori are constantly developed further as several H. pylori associated clinical conditions remain an issue of debate and controversy. Research on the basic mechanisms of the infection is also continuing, and new findings and challenging views are continuously emerging, without providing definitive answers yet. This publication presents new facts useful for the clinician, addressing questions such as the contribution of bacterial virulence and genetic predisposition of the host to disease outcomes. It is also a puzzle why a smaller group of H. pylori infected patients develops clinical manifestations, but a much larger proportion remains asymptomatic. It is also discussed how to deal with the dyspeptic patient in primary care. ... Read more

Product Description
Evaluates the carcinogenic risk to humans posed by infection with three schistosoma trematodes, three liver flukes and the bacterium Helicobacter pylori. These biological agents were selected for evaluation on the basis of evidence suggesting a causal association between infection and the development of human cancers.

The first monograph assesses data on Schistosoma haematobiumS. mansoniand S. japonicum, the three species which account for the vast majority of schistosomal disease in humans. The most extensive sections evaluate the results of studies of cancer in humans and experimental animals, concentrating on the strength of evidence linking infection with S. haematobium to squamous-cell carcinoma of the urinary bladder, and infection with S. mansoni or S. japonicum to an increased risk for cancers of the gastrointestinal tract. The monograph concludes that infection with S. haematobium is carcinogenic to humans and that infection with S. japonicum is possibly carcinogenic to humans; infection with S. mansoni could not be classified.

The second monograph on liver flukes evaluates data on Opisthorchis viverriniO. felineus and Clonorchis sinensis. These foodborne trematodes establish a chronic infection of the bile ducts and more rarely the pancreatic duct and gall-bladder of humans and other mammals. Most carcinogenicity data centre on the possibility that these trematodes are involved in the development of cholangiocarcinoma or liver cancer. The monograph concludes that infection with O. viverrini is carcinogenic to humans and that infection with C. sinensis is probably carcinogenic to humans; infection with O. felineus could not be classified.

The final monograph evaluates data on Helicobacter pylori. More than half of the world's population may be infected with this bacterium, which is responsible for most cases of chronic gastritis and duodenal ulcer. Citing several studies linking infection to gastric cancer in humans, the monograph concludes that infection with H. pylori is carcinogenic to humans. ... Read more

Aus Wikipedia. Nicht dargestellt. Auszug: Helicobacter is a genus of Gram-negative bacteria possessing a characteristic helix shape. They were initially considered to be members of the Campylobacter genus, but since 1989 they have been grouped in their own genus. Some species have been found living in the lining of the upper gastrointestinal tract, as well as the liver of mammals and some birds.. The most widely known species of the genus is H. pylori which infects up to 50% of the human population. Some strains of this bacterium are pathogenic to humans as it is strongly associated with peptic ulcers, chronic gastritis, duodenitis, and stomach cancer. It also serves as the type species of the genus. Helicobacter spp. are able to thrive in the very acidic mammalian stomach by producing large quantities of the enzyme urease, which locally raises the pH from ~2 to a more biocompatible range of 6 to 7. Bacteria belonging to this genus are usually susceptible to antibiotics such as penicillin, are microaerophilic (require small amounts of oxygen), and are fast-moving with their flagella. ...http://booksllc.net/?l=de ...
