Dated but Historical
Published in 1976, this book by Dr. Mortimer Lacher, MD would not be very useful for a person who has just been diagnosed.But for the lymphoma historian this book is a good read.Dr. Lacher's later book Hodgkin's Disease: The Consequences of Survival is more sought after but alas out of print.Recommended for the student of medicine or medical information or for patents treated in this era.If you need current information, you should search for more recent books or web sites. ... The Gold Standard
This is still the book with the solid research one wants on Hodgkin's.Aimed more towards seasoned readers rather than the person who just found out a loved one may have lymphoma.Like said in previous reviews, well laid out with chapters on all pertinent subjects.

A Difficult Read, but Worth the Effort
For a family member of a person recently diagnosed with Hodgkin'sLymphoma, this book is a valuable resource for understanding this rarecondition. It's a difficult read, but the book is organized into managablesections. For a lay person, it is probably best read in conjunction withless-technical material to provide definitions and context. Topicscovered include historical perspectives of diagnosis and treatment, currentresearch, and up-to-date treatment options.It provides in-depthexplainations of the role of various diagnostic techniques inclassification and staging. Additional topics include the relationshipbetween Hodgkin's and the non-Hodgkin's lymphomas as well as theassociation with Epstein-Barr virus. The issues of pediatric Hodgkin's andlong-term complications of treatment are also covered. The book'sstrongest recomendation is that it is one of the few available with currentinformation specific to Hodgkin's, as opposed to the non-Hodgkin'slymphomas. It provides the lay person with requisite information to discussHodgkin's with the medical team, in sufficient detail to make informeddecisions.

As a layperson not familiar with medical terms and theories I found the book hard to follow and understand at first. After a bit of slow reading and comprehension it became a wonderful source of knowledge about cancerand hodgkin's disease

Hodgkin's disease, sometimes called Hodgkin's lymphoma, is a cancer that starts in lymphatic tissue. Lymphatic tissue includes the lymph nodes and related organs that are part of the body's immune and blood-forming systems. The lymph nodes are small, bean-shaped organs found underneath the skin in the neck, underarm, and groin. They are also found in many other places in the body such as inside the chest, abdomen, and pelvis. Lymph nodes make and store infection-fighting white blood cells, called lymphocytes. They are connected throughout the body by lymph vessels (narrow tubes similar to blood vessels). These lymph vessels carry a colourless, watery fluid (lymphatic fluid) that contains lymphocytes. Eventually the lymphatic fluid is emptied into the blood vessels in the left upper chest. There are 5 different types of Hodgkin's lymphoma: Nodular sclerosing Hodgkin's lymphoma; Mixed cellularity Hodgkin's lymphoma; Lymphocyte depletion Hodgkin's lymphoma; Lymphocyte-rich classical Hodgkin's lymphoma; Nodular lymphocyte-predominant Hodgkin's lymphoma.
