5-0 out of 5 stars Great Overview but not for everyone
This book is very informative in regards to the condition overall. However, not every Hydrocephalus condition is the same making some of this information useless and/or very scary. There is not very much information out there for this condition, but this book does help explain the most commons forms and the things to look for in case of shunt failures.I highly recommed this book, but if you are a parent of a child with Hydrocephalus, read it in small doses because it does make the condition seem hopeless.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hydro Guide is a Fantastic Resource
I was very pleased to have purchased and read the book Hydrocephalus:A Guide for Patients, Family, and Friends. I had read parts of it online, but it was great to have all the material condensed in the book. I read through the book very quickly underlining, highlighting, and taking notes on sections that really hit home with me.

I had most of the symptoms listed on page 21 when I was very young--particularly the headaches/eyeaches, nausea, difficulty with fine motor skills, Gait Disturbance, *Vision problems* like slow non-reacting pupils, impaired lateral and upward gaze, and strabismus/eye misallignments.

Chapter 4 was very informative--it thoroughly covered Shunts--how they work, what they are made of, and who manufactures them. This was especially helpful since I'm trying to get my medical records to determine the manufacturer and components of my shunt before I have an MRI in a more powerful Imaging machine.

I found the Signs of Shunt Complications/failure to be useful since my shunt is fifteen years old. I took careful note of the section on relocating and finding a new neurosurgeon. I moved 500 miles away from where I had surgery--plus my surgeon relocated to the West Coast. I was extremely interested in reading the section on Non-Verbal Learning Disorder (pg 204-207.) The section provided examples of people who had similar experiences as I had--difficulty with mechanical math, trouble with long division, strugles with word problems.

I highly recommend you get this book if you have hydrocephalus like I do (mine was caused by an arachnoid cyst over my cerebellum.)It's great for family members too, especially if you are newly diagnosed and considering surgery to treat the Hydro. There was very little information about hydrocephalus available to me back when I got my diagnosis in 1994. I wish I had info from this book and several of today's internet sites which give lots of information on the condition.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very informative
I was diagnosed with hydrocephalus when I was 9 months old.My Mother never really knew too much about it so neither did I.I've had 3 shunt surgeries (first one when I was 11 months, a revision at 5 years old, and a new VP shunt in a different place at 11 years old) and now that I'm 23 and a Mommy of 2, I really started getting worried about the 'what ifs'.I've done a lot of research and this book is great. It's very informative and puts it in easy to understand language for those who aren't fluent with medical terminology. It covers all aspects of hydrocephalus and the common medical conditions that are associated with it.Though I am lucky and have none of those other conditions, I now know what to look out for.

1-0 out of 5 stars Do NOT buy this book
My mother bought this for me when my son was shunted at a month old due to hydrocephalus. This book gave us wrong information about just about everything to expect.Find something more current, or ask your neuro-surgeon for a recommendation - but don't put yourself through reading this obsolete, upsetting and misinformed book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Hydro Book
If you have a child with hydro or a close friend or relative with hydro this book is a must have.It is VERY informative. It's a great resource to turn to when in need of some answers. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A great source of information
I bought this book after we were told that our son would be born with Hydrocephalus. Of course I had never even heard of this condition prior to this, so I had a lot to learn.

The only disapiontment to this book is that it contains no actual information, it simply lists all of the websites that do. I was a little dissapionted at first, but it really did come in handy having all of the websites in an easy to use guide.

If you are looking for information, do not buy this book. If you'd like to know where to find information, then this is the book for you. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
In the last ten years the pediatric neurosurgeon has witnessed a real revolution in the diagnosis and treatment of pediatric hydrocephalus, the most frequently encountered condition in the everyday clinical practice. The evolution of MRI and the advent of neuroendoscopic surgery have resuscitated the interest in the classification, etiology and pathophysiology of hydrocephalus. The book offers an updated overview on the recent progresses in this field, and a new approach to hydrocephalus: the reader will find in it a modern and new presentation of an old disease, where genetics, endoscopy, cost-effectiveness analyses and many other aspects of the various therapies are extensively discussed. The volume will be useful not only for neurosurgeons but for all the specialists interested in the various aspects of hydrocephalus: pediatricians, radiologists, endocrinologists, pathologists and geneticians. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Not enough stars for this book!!!
By all means, this is an outstanding book on pediatric hydrocephalus. Although quite expensive, I do not regret buying it. With all the advances in technology and clinical diagnosis and treatment, hydrocephalus (pediatric as well as the normal pressure type) continues to puzzle the medical community. The two treatment procedures deal merely with the mechanics of the brain which, as the book demonstrates, might not be enough. There is an urgent need to look again to hydrocephalus not only from the point of view of the brain's biomechanics, but also from the point of view of the electro-chemical activities of the hydrocephalic brain. I highly recommend this book! ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
Webster's bibliographic and event-based timelines are comprehensive in scope, covering virtually all topics, geographic locations and people. They do so from a linguistic point of view, and in the case of this book, the focus is on "Hydrocephalus," including when used in literature (e.g. all authors that might have Hydrocephalus in their name). As such, this book represents the largest compilation of timeline events associated with Hydrocephalus when it is used in proper noun form. Webster's timelines cover bibliographic citations, patented inventions, as well as non-conventional and alternative meanings which capture ambiguities in usage. These furthermore cover all parts of speech (possessive, institutional usage, geographic usage) and contexts, including pop culture, the arts, social sciences (linguistics, history, geography, economics, sociology, political science), business, computer science, literature, law, medicine, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and other physical sciences. This "data dump" results in a comprehensive set of entries for a bibliographic and/or event-based timeline on the proper name Hydrocephalus, since editorial decisions to include or exclude events is purely a linguistic process. The resulting entries are used under license or with permission, used under "fair use" conditions, used in agreement with the original authors, or are in the public domain. ... Read more
