Product Description
Webster's bibliographic and event-based timelines are comprehensive in scope, covering virtually all topics, geographic locations and people. They do so from a linguistic point of view, and in the case of this book, the focus is on "Hypoglycemia," including when used in literature (e.g. all authors that might have Hypoglycemia in their name). As such, this book represents the largest compilation of timeline events associated with Hypoglycemia when it is used in proper noun form. Webster's timelines cover bibliographic citations, patented inventions, as well as non-conventional and alternative meanings which capture ambiguities in usage. These furthermore cover all parts of speech (possessive, institutional usage, geographic usage) and contexts, including pop culture, the arts, social sciences (linguistics, history, geography, economics, sociology, political science), business, computer science, literature, law, medicine, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and other physical sciences. This "data dump" results in a comprehensive set of entries for a bibliographic and/or event-based timeline on the proper name Hypoglycemia, since editorial decisions to include or exclude events is purely a linguistic process. The resulting entries are used under license or with permission, used under "fair use" conditions, used in agreement with the original authors, or are in the public domain. ... Read more

The glands of the endocrine system are responsible for secreting the hormones neccessary for normal human growth, development, and metabolism. The hormonal balance must be precise, and serious health consequences can result from improperly timed, too much, or too little hormonal secretion. Until a problem develops, many people may be unfamiliar with the endocrine system or be unaware of its role in maintaining health. As a result, early symptoms of disorder are frequently overlooked or misdiagnosed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Source of Information for Understanding Metabolic and Endocrine Functions and Disorders
This is a comprehensive, thorough book containing information about the endocrine system: how it works, how the various organs send and receive hormones, and how those hormones influence and interract with each other. This sourcebook also discusses the consequences when hormones are released in the wrong amounts (too much, too little, or none) as well as the treatments for the resulting conditions. As much as possible, this book clarifies the complex actions, interactions, causes, effects, and treatments for the disorders of the endocrine system on a level that is understandable to a medical non-professional.

For anyone facing medical challenges in the endocrine area, the information in this book would provide a basis for intelligent discussion with their physician; for someone simply interested in this aspect of the workings of the body, it provides good general understanding. The book also provides many resources, including online, print, and names/addresses of physicians and agencies where further information may be obtained.

Each of the various topics is written by a physician specializing in one aspect of the endocrine-metabolism system.Very well organized, it is divided by general systems (Adrenal, Pituitary, Thyroid, etc), then subdivided into chapters discussing various disorders that may occur within those systems.

The level of the book's writing is appropriate to provide enough information for non-professionals to reach the understanding being sought, but without medical terminology or acronyms which might decrease comprehension. Overall, the book is very comprehensible, helpful, and highly recommended. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars It is about time someone got this right!
Dr. Illa is a Stanford trained doctor who actually knows something about diabetes and is more interested in results than making money.

He takes the guesswork out of treating diabetic patients and has developed a sensible step-by-step method for modern doctors to follow so they can have the great results he does with his patients. He makes changes slowly and does it on an individual level based on what each patient needs.

He first pays strict attention to each patient's kidney function because of the medications diabetics take. Then he moves on to the beta cells in the pancreas since he sees diabetes as being an "alpha cell disease process" and suppresses glucagon production of the alpha cells. Then he uses medication to regenerate the beta cell population. Blood sugar readings are emailed to him, and he keeps on top of each case and has great results.[...]. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars recipes I have tried are good but many recipes lack baking temp or time
I have only tried 2 recipes so far, both of which were good, but am interested in trying several dozen of the recipes. However, I am going to need to play with oven temperature and length of baking for many recipes because they are missing (about 8 are missing both info., 10 missing temperature). There are a few inconsistencies within recipes (for example, ingredients listed as extract in the ingredients list but zest in the directions). There are only two pages that are so thoroughly mixed up that I can't even try them. My guess is that a draft, not the final, of the book was printed, and that a second edition will soon follow with the corrections made. If a list of corrections is ever distributed, I hope to get it =).

4-0 out of 5 stars These healthy recipes are far from bland!
The Reactive Hypoglycemia Diet Cookbook has a wonderful variety of recipes that I've seen nowhere else, and they are far from bland. They include a number of ethnic recipes, such as Indian, Greek and Mexican. I can't wait to try them out, especially Butternut Squash with Whole Wheat,Wild Rice & Onion Stuffing, Chocolate Mocha Ice Cream with Saffron Cream Sauce, Black Bean Chilaquiles and Avocado Chocolate Dream Pie! Some unusual ingredients are combined in this cookbook, but the results sound fantastic. It's especially great to know they are healthy recipes. While I don't have reactive hypoglycemia, I think it's important for all of us to keep steady glucose levels so we will feel our best and have a steady energy level throughout the day.

One thing I wish the author would have included, however, is the nutrition information for each recipe and how much is in each serving. In addition, some of the ingredients are somewhat out of the ordinary, but could probably be found at Whole Foods or Trader Joe's. Nevertheless, I'm anxious to get in the kitchen to try out these recipes on my family!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Source of Good Food!
Stanley Underhill has written a book that not only provides an insight into reactive hypoglycemia, but one that also provides a multitude of recipes that will aid in the control of attacks. These recipes are good for the whole family, not just those who suffer reactive hypoglycemia. This would be a good addition to any kitchen. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Cooking for Health: Diabetes and Hypoglycemia
I recently started a macrobiotics diet, hoping to find help with some chronic health problems. I started on my own, from instructions in a basic book on macrobiotics. Quickly developed problems with upsetting hypoglycemic episodes that shook my confidence in my ability to proceed on my own.

After reading Aveline Kushi's book on diabetes and hypoglycemia, I learned that my diet was out of balance for the particular needs of someone with hypoglycemia. After making the recommended changes, I have stopped having blood sugar problems and feel that I can stay on the macrobiotics diet and continue to enjoy the healing benefits of it.

I'm grateful for the help in this simple, readable but important book. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars LOW BLOOD SUGAR Hypoglycemia: The 20th Century Epidemic?
Good book. I didn't know anything about hypoglycemia before I red the book. Lots of info and tips for the someone who has the disease. I didn't realize it was written in the 80's. Lots of the info seems relevant to our times.
Also, I could not help but think, could there be newer and more relevent information?

5-0 out of 5 stars SoTHAT's why I feel so lousy!
Reading Dr. Martin L. Budd's book on Hypoglycaemia was literally a life saving experience for me.(I was misdiagnosed with a seizure disorder instead of reactive hypoglycemia and a food allergy to aspartame and put on medications that were literally killing me!)Realizing I had hypolgycemia literally changed my life for the better as I was finally able to take control and regain my health!

This book is like having a most knowledgable and empathetic doctor sit down with you and explain everything you ever needed to know.Martin L. Budd describes more about how our blood sugar levels affect our bodies than any endocrynologist or other physician I've ever been too. This book not only gives symptoms, but helps you understand exactly what is happening within the body to cause them -- and how to treat or alleviate them!

Everything from headaches to depression to sensitivity of sight and sound to decision making to blood pressure and even more is affected by our glucose levels. Why?Simply put, because glucose is what feeds our brain cells and keeps us alive!

While easy to understand, Dr. Martin L. Budd's book also gives us technical and medical explanations of the condition as well as insight to why blood sugar disorders are both so common and so commonly overlooked or misdiagnosed.

I highly recommend reading this book.Even if you don't suspect you have hypoglycemia or diabetes, it is so informative that it is well worth the read. And for those who do have hypoglycemia, I've learned more about low blood sugar from this book than all the others I've read on the topic combined.

5-0 out of 5 stars Recommended for the Misunderstood Hypoglicemic
I thought this book was absoultly fantistic. Anyone suffering from thesymptoms of Hypoglycemia should read this.It finally answered so manyquestions about why we feel the way we do.How can we know what is goingon with our blood sugar. I wish I had been handed this book when I wasdiagnosed. If you are confused about what is happening to you when yourblood sugar drops, this is the book for you!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars It really helped me
This was only book about my condition, it has really made a big difference. I have really been feeling so much better. The biggest relief is to know it wasn't my imagination. There are so many sypmtoms and this iswhere I found out what they were. The doctors couldn't really help me alot. But this book answered all my questions. I would recommend it to anyonewith this condition. Thanks to the author for helping me! ... Read more
