Cold Case
Crime fiction is rarely more unconventional than Arnaldur Indridason's bleak tales of Reykjavik police detective Erlendur, a morose cop whose own life plays as tragic as the victims he seeks to avenge."Hypothermia" is his sixth outing, and if not his best, it is arguably the most complex.It centers on the suicide of a young woman, depressed by the loss of her overly protective mother and still haunted by the drowning death of her father when she was still a child.While there is nothing at the scene to suggest foul play, and is suicide an unfortunate but logical conclusion to the troubled girl's life, Erlendur doggedly pursues an unofficial investigation into the death.Hints of the supernatural, life beyond death, and Erlendur's own ghosts play heavily in this cleverly convoluted yarn.In a seemingly aimless meandering, Erlendur bounces with near-ADD lack of concentration from the suicide to decades-old missing persons' cases "cold" by even Icelandic standards.

As fans of Indridason have come to expect, "Hypothermia" is dark and moody - a new Scandinavian shade of noir - but intelligent, carefully crafted, and poignant.In some ways, Erlendur is an Icelandic "Columbo" - suitably rumpled and disarming - though missing Peter Faulk's humor and swagger.A man who realizes the mistakes he's made in life, and while regretful, is content to wallow in stoic fatalism.This is high drama, beautifully written, well crafted crime fiction.So give Stieg Larsson's "girl" a night off and get dark with Arnaldur Indridason.

a deceptively good story..
'Hypothermia' is definitely one of Arnaldur Indridason's better novels, and that is saying a lot.It's really more of a brooding psychological story about death, depression and the hope for some measure of relief in life after death.The characterizations are uniformly excellent.This is one mystery without much in the way of blood and action.But it is a story that sticks with you, and you'll learn a lot about Iceland and Icelanders.


Bottom line: yet another excellent effort by the author.Strongly recommended.

A Chilling Study
Hypothermia is Icelandic author Arnaldur Indridason's latest mystery, missing persons novel.An immensely absorbing read that makes judicious use of Indridason's talent for interweaving past and present events; for eample, often tying together a tragic drowning, seances in the past to the recent suicide of a tormented woman. In this story, the author's main character, the brooding detective. once more dwells upon his troubled relationship with his eccentric daughter and his embittered ex-wife. However, he spends too much space reflecting over the tragedy in his young life, in which his younger brother died in a blizzard in remote, eastern Iceland. Indridason's concentration on this subject has been stretched out in his previous novels and needs to be brought to some kind of conclusion. Nevertheless, Hypothermia is a compelling tale, rich in details about seances, 'flatlining', and hypothermia's "chilling" role in the procedural's outcome. I purchased this character-filled novel in hardback from Amazon and got a reduced price on the book!I highly recommend Hypothermia, as well as Indridason's other five novels, including Arctic Chill and The Draining Lake.

Still a big fan...
I have read all of Indridason's books available in English. The translation by Victoria Cribb is smooth, equal to or surpassing those of the late Bernard Scudder. Compared to the earlier books, I found Hypothermia less of a mystery/thriller and more of a psychological study of Detective Erlendur than his other books.(Unless you count the mystery of Erlendur.) Also something of a departure, Erlendur's police department colleagues, his girlfriend and son are barely present in Hypothermia, and despite the title, the character "cold weather" plays only a minor role. The traumatic event of Erlendur's childhood, though certainly important in the earlier books, is more fully developed as the compelling force of his life and career. Indridason introduces us to Erlendur's ex-wife, and a the mystery of their relationship, parenting, and its effect on the children begins to resolve. I recommend Hypothermia, most avidly to readers familiar with the series.

Loved it--always depressing, but he does a good depressing (like Ken Bruen does--although his writing is nothing like Bruen's)

More than your average murder mystery!
This terrific installment in the Reykjavik Murder Mystery series deals with different forms of hypothermia.

In the past, there is the tradgedy Inspector Erlunder suffered as a child during an accident where his brother was lost.In the present, the apparent suicide of a clinically depressed woman may have links to a series of experiments her husband had been involved with whereby human subjects were frozen to stop their hearts and then revived.This "Flatliners" act was an attempt to connect with the after-life.In the case of the suicidal woman, she was haunted by her mother's death and sure that there wasa message she needed to get from her in the great beyond.

Arnaldur Indridason deftly weaves all of these characters and storylines together to make a compelling read that goes beyond that of ordinary mystery genre.

Incomparable Icelandic Investigator
Having enjoyed all six books in Indridason's Reykjavik murder mysteries - 1. Jar City (2004) aka Tainted Blood, 2. Silence of the Grave (2005), 3. Voices (2006), 4. The Draining Lake (2007), 5. Arctic Chill (2008) and 6. Hypothermia (2009) - I would say that the last may indeed be his best story.

Since previous reviews have provided a synopsis, let me simply say that I found the narrative extraordinarily engaging and the conclusion completely satisfying. The dogged detective Erlendur has never been better. (And perhaps the same can be said for the author.)

An Informal Inquiry
A young woman is found at her summer house by a lake.She has hung herself from one of the beams.There is no foul-play involved according to the coroner.But something is bothering Erlendur.Something is tickling the back of his neck.An old man comes to see Erlendur.His son disappeared thirty years ago.He comes to see Erlendur on his sons birthday.His wife has died and he is terminal.He has come to say goodbye.Erlendur decides to give the disappearance one last look.

So begins this amazing novel.The plotting is so well done that you feel that you are with Erlendur every step of the way.Sometimes you could be one or two steps ahead or behind.But he never looses the thread and keeps plugging away.There's a side story that involves his daughter, son, ex-wife, current girlfriend and his long lost brother.We learn a lot more about the 'gloomy' and taciturn detectives' life.

Arnaldur has a way of presenting information to the reader that is at times subtle and other times brutal.But nothing is ever talked about or mentioned for no reason. Every piece of information is a building block in the story or the characters.This was a well thought out story, without any extraneous plotting.

There are two more books to the series (as of 2009) that are yet to be translated. Here's hoping they are anywhere as good as this one.

Haunting and Hypnotizing
I've been a big fan of Mr. Indridason's writing since his debut Jar City, and Hypothermia didn't disappoint - if anything, it further reinforces his reputation as one of the best crime fiction writers today. Police Inspector Erlendur's latest case centers around a bereft young woman who commited suicide, apparently still grieving her mother's death.Something about the case doesn't make sense to Erlendur so he launches his own informal investigation. While trying to unravel this mystery, he is also plagued with doubts about two unsolved missing persons cases (his specialty) from decades before.This is Erlendur's most personal and intense journey - as he comes to grips with his own past, present and future. There are about 4 recent books on Brain Hypothermia. This one should be on the shelves of clinicians and researchers involved in hypothermia research. The chapters are succinct and well illustrated. It is very suitable as a desk reference on the subject for novice researchers.It discusses the parameters, biochemistry, management, and outcomes of hypothermia relevant to 2004.Dietrich has authored another Springer book in 2005 called Hypothermia for Acute Brain Damage which is more research based and more uptodate.The books are still quite different.The bench researcher will want to buy both, with priority on the 2005 volume.I used this book to help prepare for a visiting lecture I gave on Cerebral Ischemia: Cellular and Molecular Mechanisms. ... Survival after out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) remains unacceptably low. Therapeutic hypothermia (TH) is the most efficacious treatment option available for comatose survivors of cardiac arrest. However, clearly delineated instructions for how to induce, maintain, and conclude TH have not been published in a codified format. Objective We assembled 11 clinicians from the University of Pennsylvania Schools of Medicine and Nursing for a day-long moderated discussion to review our institution’s TH protocol and reach consensus on a step-by-step management plan of the comatose survivor of OHCA. We attempted to systematically work our way through the existing University of Pennsylvania TH protocol. The goal was to address critical decisions at each stage of care of the post-arrest patient, including whom to cool, how to cool, how long to cool, how to rewarm, neuroprognostication, and other fundamental aspects of patient management. A comprehensive, essential reference
This slim but content-packed volume goes far beyond the rudimentary information in most wilderness first aid texts. Forgey devotes the majority of the text to a readable explanation of how the body produces, retains, and loses heat, providing practical advice on avoiding hypothermia in the first place. The final third deals with the recognition and treatment of chronic and acute hypothermia, with clear and specific directions for treating the progressive stages of each. A final chapter on other dangers of cold rounds out the contents.

Although Dr. Forgey's wilderness medicine credentials are beyond dispute, the book would benefit greatly from a list of references. Its website has also disappeared without a trace.

These omissions, however, do little to mar the usefulness of this excellent reference, which belongs on the bookshelf of any outdoor adventurer. ... Read more

To evaluate the efficacy of systemic hypothermia when applied within 10 hours after birth to neonates with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE). Study Design Ninety-three term infants with moderate-to-severe HIE were randomly assigned to either systemic hypothermia (n = 46) or conventional treatment (n = 47). Hypothermia was induced within 10 hours after birth, decreasing rectal temperature to 33.5°C for 72 hours, followed by slow rewarming to 36.5°C. Neurodevelopmental outcome was assessed at 18 months old. The primary outcome was death or moderate-to-severe disability. Results Outcome data were available for 82 infants. Death or moderate-to-severe disability occurred in 21 of 44 infants (47.7%) in the control group and in 7 of 38 infants (18.4%) in the hypothermia group (P = 0.01) at 18 months. The primary outcome was not different whether hypothermia was started within 6 hours or 6 to 10 hours after birth. Subgroup analysis suggested that systemic hypothermia improved long-term outcome only in infants with moderate HIE (P = 0.009), but not in those with severe HIE. No severe hypothermia-related adverse events were observed. Conclusion Systemic hypothermia reduced the risk of disability in infants with moderate HIE, in accordance with earlier studies. Hypothermia was induced within 6 hours in most infants, but delaying the onset to 6 to 10 hours after birth did not negatively affect primary outcome. Further studies with a large number of patients are needed to confirm that delayed cooling is equally effective.
