Book Description
For thousands of years, Chinese women have trusted traditional Chinese medicine to help them conceive. A recent medical study found that women who augmented Western fertility treatments with TCM, traditional Chinese medicine, doubled their chances of a succesful pregnancy. THE INFERTILITY CURE gives women an effective, natural means of supporting their efforts to get pregnant. Based on techniques and remedies drawn from traditional Chinese medicine, this program shows readers how to increase their overall health and well-being, strengthen the organs and systems vital to reproduction, heal specific conditions that may affect fertility, and even support Western-based reproductive technology such as IVF and hormone therapy. Dr. Lewis' easy-to-follow program begins with diagnosis, using an extensive questionnaire to determine each reader's unique diagnostic category. The next three steps involve bringing a woman's body back into balance through diet, acupressure, and Chinese herbs. By following this program, women will be able to create a welcoming physical and emotional environment for what they desire most: a child. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have!
If you are having fertility problems and are searching for unconventional ways to overcome them, then PLEASE GET THIS BOOK!It is full of so many different things to try that a "regular" OB or even RE will never suggest you do because they might not believe they work.Simple things such as dietary changes, supplements, acupressure are in here. While I still did not conceive naturally, our third attempt with IVF was successful. The suggestions in here really did change my hormone test results and got them to levels they never would have been without the advice.

5-0 out of 5 stars it works!!
This book changed my life. I have mild endometriosis.Through infertility treatments, I was able to get pregnant three times--and have three miscarriages. After the third unexplained miscarriage, my doctor told me that I probably should pursue adoption or donor eggs. I thought the fact that my miscarriages were unexplained probably meant they were missing something. Thus, I read this book cover to cover about 10 times.I could't believe what I read as it described me perfectly--and problems that I had been suffering from for years but thought were unrelated to fertility!!! I started acupuncture, herbs, and followed the diet in this book pretty religiously.Over the next three months, I saw all these changes in my body occur--my cycles became more healthy, I stopped being cold all the time, I had more energy, etc. After three months, I tried one more IUI and told my doc that I thought it would work this time.He told me not to get my hopes up as I was a difficult case.Well, now we have a beautiful 15 month old because of this book and a very embarrassed doctor (who completely poo pooed the whole acupuncture, herb thing).Don't let the docs who don't know a thing about proper nutrition steer you away from this book!!!It really works!!

5-0 out of 5 stars ABSOLUTE BELIEVER
When I was diagnosed with Premature Ovarian Failure, I was pretty much given no options and no hope. As a last ditch effort, I did a search for alternative treatments for POF. I came across this book. It has been the greatest help for me and I am changing my life around. I am on the road to becoming normal again and I owe it all to this book. I of course enlisted the help of a TCM doctor after reading this book and she has helped me as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book!
This book provides a lot of positive information for women who are struggling to conceive a baby. It illustrates the importance of being in tune with your body and how a variety of imbalances can be rectified by diet and lifestyle. She also gives hope to those women who have been diagnosed as infertile from western doctors.I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who is having difficulty having a baby.

5-0 out of 5 stars It Works!
After struggling with unsuccessful attempts with clomid, IUIs, 4 cancelled IVF cycles and even one unsuccessful pregnancy with Donor Eggs I read Dr. Lewis's book. Having been diagonsed with Unexplained Infertility I knew that there had to be another way. So I followed her advice and guidelines...
Last week I had a retrieval (of my own eggs) and transfer and am one week away from a pregnancy test!
Regardless of a positive pregnancy test - this book changed my life.Read it!
If nothing else it is a gift to yourself to lead you to live your best, whole, happy life! ... Read more

Book Description
Infertility is a heartbreaking condition that affects nine million American couples each year. It causes tremendous stress, can trigger debilitating sadness and depression, and can tear a marriage to shreds. In Conquering Infertility, Harvard psychologist Alice Domar—whom Vogue calls the “Fertility Goddess”—provides infertile couples with what they need most: stress relief, support, and hope. Using the innovative mind/body techniques she has perfected at her clinic, Domar helps infertile women not only regain control over their lives but also boost their chances of becoming pregnant.

With Conquering Infertility, women learn how to cope with infertility in a much more positive way and to carve a path toward a rich, full, happy life. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book for coping skills when TTC
After reading this book, I definetly have more coping skills for managing the stress and anxiety of our fertility journey. Domar devotes a whole chapter to relaxation techniques and stratedgies, which I am already seeing the benefits of everyday! In my opinion, she spends a little too much time discussing the sadness, jealousy, and anger some women feel towards their pregnant family and friends. Don't get me wrong, I definetly identified with the emotional sadness and struggle, but felt it was over discussed. I will keep this book handy as we start our second IVF, hopefully much more relaxed this time!
Best of luck for healthy babies in 2008,
Jamie Lynne

I liked this book because it gave suggestions on relaxing and trying to deal with infertility. It gave me ideas on what to do when I am feeling anxious.I know how to handle my emotions better.

5-0 out of 5 stars I had the 2002 version of this book...
I was looking through my past reviews and decided it was important for me to review this book in particular. Let me tell you that I remember breaking down crying (actually was doing a lot of that those days) reading this book. While it had practical advice mentioned in the book, the most important thing was that she UNDERSTOOD how I was feeling, even some feelings I had not had words to describe until I read this book. This book gave me hope and the courage to seek counseling from a doctor who specializes in infertility counseling. The year after I read this book, I finally had the strength to try one last round of IVF. This time we were successful, and now I have 2 beautiful 3 year olds.

5-0 out of 5 stars great, really helpful
this book really helped me a lot. but the first time I read it I thought it was not written for me. it was, and very well. I was just in denial and thought nothing could have helped me in this process. I read it twice and was lucky enough to be part of one of Ali Domar's groups. I have been really surprised of how much I have learned from the book, how helpful it was (and it still is) and what a difference it made. it's a menu of tips and good treatments that you can pick and choose to apply to your life. I have been transformed and I strongly recommended to anyone going through this process and their family and friends who want to be supportive and helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars A lifesaver
I felt hopeless, worthless and depressed after my third miscarriage, with a D&C on what had been the due date for a previous pregnancy and with the birth of a good friend's first daughter a week later. Reading this book gave me hope again and helped me acknowledge my feelings of being angry and depressed with not being able to carry to term when everybody around me easily got through pregnancy. This book will probably not give much advice on what to do to make you pregnant and carry to term that you haven't heard already. There just isn't a lot of things you can do. Instead, it offers a lot of advice on how to get through the stress, depression, anger and frustration that comes from the inability to get pregnant or carry to term. It offers ways to get through infertility treatments without having it taking over your life. It taught me simple skills to help me focus on things in my life that are good. After years of saying to myself whenever an acquaintance got pregnant "I wish it was me, but I will never get a baby". I now have hope again, I now have a plan. I may not become a parent easily, but there are still plans B, C, D and E left, and I am still doing this with the man I love. I had lost track of that.

I highly recommend it for when you lost hope, or don't know how to cope with all the babies your friends and colleagues are having. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars good book but size was not convenient
this book had a lot of useful information but the size of the book has expanded from its previous edition. it did not really fit into the pocket of scrubs or a white coat and made it hard to use on the wards.

4-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive Book for Ob/Gyn Clerkship
A good, thorough review of most ob/gyn topics dealt with on a medical school rotation. Straightforward layout and thorough table of contents made it easy to use in clinic. Book Description
The latest tests and treatments to help women conceive and carry to term are outlined in this book. The reasons for their so-called "unexplained" IVF failure and pregnancy loss are also comprehensively explained for the first time ever. Pioneering of this new field of medicine is Dr. Beer, who has helped thousands of couples achieve pregnancy and achieved success rates of more than 85% within three natural cycles or IVF attempts. The average age of these patients is over 35.

Having worked with more than 7,000 couples, Dr. Beer has identified five types of immune system response that cause reproductive failure: Category 1 is the least severe and Category 5 is most severe. Many infertile couples find that immunotherapy alone can enable them to become parents, without the requirement for IVF. The same is also true for recurrent miscarriage patients.

This thoroughly researched and referenced text includes contributions from world-leading professionals, including Dr. Carolyn Coulam, Dr. William Matzner and Dr. Geoffrey Sher. The acclaimed holistic practitioner Zita West has also contributed a special chapter on natural therapies and diet specifically for those with immune-based fertility problems and recurrent miscarriage and Dr. Christo Zouves, author of "Expecting Miracles," has provided the Foreword.

As an established and reputable field of reproductive medicine, many centers in the US and the rest of the world now specialize in immunotherapy and a selection of these is listed in the resources section. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A baby is almost guaranteed if you read this book
If your best friend was a book it would be this one. Dr Beer describes in easy to understand words how the immune system can go into overkill in some women. The result is miscarriage, IVF failure and infertility. But these outcomes can be prevented with the right tests and treatments. I read this book and found it technical when necessary but with lots of human interest stories and studies to back everything up. The authors did a good job making this book accessible to ordinary women and also credible for when they take it to show their doctors. It is not dry like the other reviewer said, it is factual and makes a complex subject understandable. The book is ahead of its time and will make infertility and miscarriage a far less frequent event if only it was more widely known to the medical profession. I had twins as a result of Dr Beer's treatments. I wasted many years and many $s consulting with narrow minded doctors before finding him. I recommend this book with all my heart to all those women who were once suffering like I was. The tests and treatments are out there and this book tells you where to find them.

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting but dry
The book has some very interesting ideas as to why failures happen. It can be pretty boring and repetitive at times though, very dry.It doesn't seem to be really written by Dr. Beers, it just has quotes from him every once in a while.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally some answers!
This book was extremely helpful!I read it cover to cover in a matter of days.Dr. Beer et al have certainly made it easy to understand and explain reasons for unexplained infertility and loss.I would recommend this book to anyone who has suffered through either infertility and/or recurrent miscarriages. In the reference section it lists the clinics which provide the type of care he discusses.I made an appt immediately with Dr. Kwak as she is the closest to our home. She is a gift to work with!

5-0 out of 5 stars Hope for families without answers
Miscarriage is tragic.Add to that doctors who often have no answers, and parents can feel hopeless after repeated loss. This book provides answers for why losses occur, and how future losses can be prevented. Many of the treatments discussed are outside of mainstream care guidleines- but these are the same old sets of rules that leave so many families without answers.Dr. Beer does a great job explaining his treatments, and any woman who still wonders why she lost multiple pregnancies should read this book.I lost four children before finally being diagnosed with two treatable conditions. It's because of people like Dr. Beer that women like me can end up having our families.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dr Beer was brilliant!
If you have recurrent pregnancy loss that is unexplained or if you have unexplained infertility, you need this book! After having SEVEN second trimester stillbirths and 3 early miscarriages, I have a 4 year old son and an 8 month old daughter.I went from doctor to doctor, from OB to REs, from the local hospital to the Cleveland Clinic and was told that nothing could be found and I wouldn't be able to deliver a live baby.Out of desperation, I searched the internet and found Dr Beer.We decided to try his treatments. It didn't work for me at first, but Dr Beer refused to give up and he contined to give me hope. This man was on a mission and that mission will continue with this book.Dr Beer is able to explain his theories in ways the average person can understand and this is a book that you can take to your doctor.Don't give up until you've read this book. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great place to start
I think this was a well written book, that covered many topics on adopting after going through the craziness of infertility.I actually felt empowered and like I had options when reading this book.My husband and I are now on the road to adoption. Not everything in this book applies to every situation, but it was great to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Loved It
This is by far the best book I read after my journey through infertility and as I began considering adoption. My husband and I now have a 3 1/2 year old son from Russia and we are in the process of adopting child number two.The truth is that adopting is extremely different from having a biological child and it is very important to work through your emotional issues before becoming an adoptive parent.I am grateful that I took the time to work through the issues addressed in this book before adopting my son.I am a better mother as a result.I highly recommend this book!

1-0 out of 5 stars Spend your money elsewhere
There was not much useful information in this book (unless you like being talked down to), and I also noticed a lot of incorrect information in what there was.The author comes off as pompous and sort of a "know it all" in many areas, which is a bit odd for a person who obviously doesn't know as much as she is claiming to know. Our family has adopted four children over the recent years, all in separate adoptions, and I can tell you for a fact that the author is way off base in some of her claims.I would not recommend this book to anyone because adoption is a very tricky process, and a lot can go wrong, especially if you are following incorrect information from a supposed "expert" such as in a book like this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent

Of all the books and many, many websites my husband and I have read since we began looking into adoption, "Adopting After Infertility" ranks near, if not at, the top of my list. The best part about this book is how sympathetic Johnston is to [prospective] adoptive parents. I've gone back to this book a few times, after reading more elsewhere and learning more, for her balanced, direct, and kind style. As well as easier on the psyche than others, "Adopting After Infertility" is informative. Not as in depth regarding laws (state by state, country by country) as other sources, there is plenty to get you started in knowing the types of adoption and choices available. Invaluable for making me feel human. An excellent starting point and grounding reference along the way as we encounter the daunting realities. Emotionally, Johnston keeps the reader in line by reminding us that, though we don't have choices or resources we might wish to, we DO have many, which she describes quite well and accurately, providing informationunavailble in the "how to" stlye accounts or in the "pro" or "con" material. Johnston is soft and kind, and empowering at once. If you are considering adoption, whether or not you are infertile, I highly recommend this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars So not what I needed to hear!!!
I read this book shortly after dh and I decided to look into adoption. The author goes on and on about getting through your grief over infertility and it made me even more depressed about my situation!! She goes through different stages that a couple has to grieve before they are ready to move on and adopt such as the grief of never sharing a pregnancy with your spouse, the grief of never having a biological child etc. etc. etc.To me, adoption is not about grieving over what I am going to miss out on, it is about embracing life's path and looking at what I do get to experience such as the joy of finding out there is a child for us, and the excitment of sharing the adoption experience with my dh.IF sucks, I will be the first one to admit that!!! But life is what you make of it and I don't think that I need to grieve all these different steps before I am ready to embrace adoption. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Worth buying
This book really got to the heart of disease - diet, lifestyle, exercise andstress management. These aspects of life must be paid attention to if one expects to have a child. If not managed now, how will our current habits affect our child to be? The author provides clear instruction, easy recipes and detailed instructions for the exercises. I just have to wonder how successful following the diet and lifestyle changes can be without acupuncture and herbs, or is that a critical component to success?

I was referred to this book by a fellow friend who like me, is trying to conceive a baby over 40.This book talks with detail about how chinese medicine works and in particularly to help "strengthen" our reproduction systems. The information is very clear and detailed and can help anyone starting to explore the benefits of TCM. It enlightens the reader because it never dismisses the Western medical community, but talks about how the Eastern methods of TCM can enhance our already traditionally accepted practice of conventional medicine. It also talks about how TCM works well alone. However, it takes diligence and specialized practitioners to fully incorporate all of this info to practice.Finding a excellent Acupuncturist or Chinese doctor seems integraland the information is amass. I felt I learned quite a bit about Chinese medicine in just one night of reading, and I was already educated in many areas.

5-0 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL!!!
OH what a wonderful book! We struggled with Infertility for years and spent thousands of dollars on treatments with what seemed like no end in sight. I felt so broken, so desperate....I always questioned WHY was this happening to me. Even though my husband was always wonderful & supportive I still hurt...we BOTH did. This book helped me out so much & completely changed the way I looked at my Infertility. I learned so much about myself & the "burden bearers" section of the book was most helpful in telling family members how they could handle this delicate situation as many of them unknowingly can sometimes say the most hurtful things. I had relied on God in the past for support & know that I wouldn't have made it without His comfort & strength as long as I did...but when I began reading this book and found the right places to search in the bible for specific verses, I was a changed woman. This book taught me great patience and that this was a time for me to grow & become closer to God. It gave me great hope and understanding about my struggles with Infertility.....and before I could even get to the end of the book....I got pregnant!!! All in God's time...and what perfect timing it was....just a few days before Thanksgiving! I'm now 13 weeks along and have seen my baby at 3 different times on ultrasound....the baby is perfectly healthy and we are so blessed. I was at my wit's end before starting this book. Of all the books I'd read on Infertility this one helped me the most & I would highly recommend it to anyone else who loves the Lord & is ready to trust in Him completely with their Infertility struggles. Best wishes to all those trying to conceive...may your journey be a short one!

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing read
This book is really life changing. It opens your heart and mind up to issues, thoughts, and feelings you may never have dealt with. This book is very well written and easy to understand. I can't imagine someone NOT liking it and gleaning something from it.

5-0 out of 5 stars For anyone at any place in their IF Journey
Since we began this new leg in our journey, I've been reading everything infertility related that I can get my hands on. The first full length book I've read dedicated exclusively to this subject is Hannah's Hope: Seeking God's Heart In The Midst Of Infertility.

Hannah's Hope is written by Jennifer Saake, previously mentioned on this blog and mother to two living children. She and her husband have walked the road of infertility for 15 years and they have had their hearts broken by several miscarriages and even more failed adoptions. The book is appropriate for women at any stage of infertility, though she writes mostly for a general audience and less for specific problems within infertility.

The structure of each chapter of Ms. Saake's book is a passage (usually a single verse) of scripture, a historical fiction retelling of Hannah's story (the mother of Samuel), Ms. Saake's writings on the subject of the chapter, probing questions on the subject at hand, a list of scriptures for meditation, and a passage (never more than a page) written to the loved ones of people struggling with infertility, designed to give the loved ones special insights and ways to support their friend or family member.

One thing I appreciate about Ms. Saake's book is her conversational tone. The book is a very easy read, and Ms. Saake's pen flows as easily and comfortably as I imagine her tongue would if she were sitting with you having a cup of coffee. Throughout the reading, I felt as if I were sitting across the table from a friend as she shared some of her innermost thoughts. This put me at ease to explore my own thoughts, agreeing with her in most cases, disagreeing with her in others, and overall deepening my intentional thoughts on our own journey.

The historical fiction retelling of Hannah's story from I Samuel 1 is designed to explore the thoughts Hannah (and occasionally some of the other main characters) may have had as she grieved her way through her own infertility journey. Through the process, the reader develops a kinship with the biblical heroine, taking comfort in the fact that though she lived thousands of years ago, her struggle was largely the same as that of a woman today and is not unknown to the heart of God.

As Ms. Saake divulges her own history and feelings, the reader is taken on a journey through exploring anger, jealousy, fear, bitterness, grief, disappointment, stress, hope, and intimacy with the Almighty. She tackles issues from fear, to bioethics, to the strength of the marital relationship, and most importantly, the infertile couple's walk with God. She is sensitive and gentle while still bold with her convictions.

There is no false piety at all in Ms. Saake. Everything is brutally honest yet still respectful of the sovereignty of God. On more than one occasion, I felt like I was reading my own thoughts simply penned by Ms. Saake's hand. There was comfort and validation in "aha! someone else has felt this way too!"

Ms. Saake does not dwell in the depths of her feelings. She provides thoughtful scriptural encouragement while at the same time refraining from giving pat answers and comfort cliches. She adds her own thoughts and insights as revealed to her through meditation and experience.

My favorite passage in the book reads:

She [the woman at the well] sought happiness in the arms of men. Jesus provides peace that could be found in none other than Himself.

I sought joy in the new life of a baby. Jesus offers New life in Himself.

I wanted to know the feeling of carrying another soul inside my body. He provides the Holy Spirit to indwell me.

I longed to nurse a child. Paul wrote, "Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, now that you have tasted that the Lord is good" (1 Peter 2:2-3).

I dreamed of watching my baby grow and mature. But am I ever-growing in Christ? "Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness. But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil" (Hebrews 5:13-14).

I bemoaned the "bread of adversity" I felt unfairly called to taste. The Lord answers with the cross: "And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, 'This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me" (Luke 22:19).

I pleaded for a child to enrich my days on earth. He commands, "But store up for yourselves treasure in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also" (Matthew 6:20-21).

p 95

Ms. Saake does not promise anyone a happy ending. She admits that even though she now has two living, biological children, the scars of infertility will always leave an ache in her heart. The journey God has taken her on through this process has not been completed or nullified by the successful conception and birth of children. I would guess that this would be of special comfort to those either struggling with secondary infertility or who still feel a loss that their family is not what they imagined or hoped it would be.

She exhorts the reader,

While Satan imprisons some with bondage to past sins, he can entangle others in what seems to be a good and righteous goal, causing them to lose sight of God in the midst of self-evaluation.
p 49

That hit me as especially poignant because I've been stewing so much about this lately that I need to guard my own heart against making motherhood my idol. That is an important challenge for every mother, mother to be, or mother at heart.

I found some of the "Burden Bearer" passages (written to friends and family members of infertile couples) to be helpful, and others were not of particular significance to me. I appreciated her frankness with her advice of how to support, and in some cases, how to refrain from causing more hurt, on infertile loved ones. One thing that should be noted is that the passages are to be read in conjunction with the rest of the book and are not intended to be read independently.

My primary critique of the book is that each chapter is very brief. Just when I thought "ok, we're tackling something I'm really struggling with," Ms. Saake moves on to another subject. I longed for her to exegete the scriptural passages she offered and share more details on the HOWS of her journey and the conclusions she's made. I don't think that this is a flaw, per say, because I don't think it was ever the author's intent to give an exhaustive chronicle of infertility and so I cannot blame her for not writing as if it were. This was simply was more of a disappointment--I longed to delve deeper with my new found friend in to emotions that are for me, still raw and in need of exploration. The approach is just a matter of personal preference and I'm sure for as many as there are of women like me who longed for more depth, there are equally many women who appreciated the brevity.

However, the ease of the flow of the book makes this a very excellent, easily accessible and processed resource for pastors, ministerial staff and anyone else truly interested in learning an "insider's perspective" on infertility. One of my very favorite chapters in the book was on how the church could help break its own silence on this matter and offer comfort to those in their congregations who are burdened with this grief. I only wish it were longer!

Overall, my impression of the book is very positive. I would heartily recommend it to anyone at any stage in their infertility journey. I also recommend it as a must-have resource for any pastor. I do recommend it for loved ones of the infertile, with the disclaimer that this book is not written specifically to give you (the loved one) advice, and reading it should be done with the intention of understanding the heart of your infertile friend or family member, and not specifically equipping with you with the "how tos" of what to do as the friend (though there is some).

Brava, Jennifer! A valiant, sincere, and godly effort that is very much appreciated.

5-0 out of 5 stars comfort and encouragement
This book has provided me with much comfort as I continue to long for a child. I would suggest it for any Christian woman who finds herself in this situation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
Hannah's Hope is a truly wonderful book.I read the book the entire way through the first night I got it.Then I read it again!

The pain and stress of infertility is beyond difficult. It starts to makes you feel hopeless.Hannah's Hope has given me hope again. The biblical references and notes give strength. The author has been through the infertility process. She understands the feelings associated with infertility, and she shares from her heart.

This book truly changed my outlook about infertility. It helped me to understand that God has a plan for my life and that I needed to give my control to Him. I needed to hear the truth spoken in this book.

I recommend this book to anyone dealing with infertility as well as those who have a loved one dealing with it.

Book Description
Strong values, unshakable faith, excellent educations, successful careers, loving families, two cats and a dog. This was the lifeJenna and Mike had built for themselves. They were living the AmericanDream. The only pieces missing were the children to run in the manicuredyard and the toys scattered throughout the four bedroom home.

Infertility first seemed to be a minor obstacle in an otherwisepeaceful existence. After four years of treatments including a series ofinvasive tests, two intrauterine inseminations, four in vitrofertilizations, two frozen embryo transfers and one miscarriage, theobstacle became nearly insurmountable. In this poignant memoir of theirjourney, Jenna and Mike recall their experience together. In an honest andempathetic series of journal entries and vignettes, this piece of writingpaints the unmistakable face of infertility. More than this, they offersome pointed suggestions from their journey to help the loved ones ofinfertiles provide support and comfort along the way.

5-0 out of 5 stars A touching, firsthand account of one couple's struggle with infertility
One in six couples will experience difficulty conceiving a child, yet the isolation of infertility can be overwhelming.Jenna and Mike's story is uniquely their own; however, any infertile reading this book will be struck with the similarities to their personal journey.Jenna does a fantastic job of bringing to the surface the raw emotions (hope, despair, anger, jealousy, and shame, to name a few) that an infertile struggles with every day.Mike's contributions to the story give a welcome male perspective and show just how important a team effort is to surviving this disease.

For those on the sidelines, this is as real as it gets.Jenna's depiction of a "typical" IVF cycle was dead on - from the Day 2 ultrasound, through the pharmacy of medications and their side-effects, to the longest wait of your life after which you find out if all you've invested (physically, emotionally and financially) has finally paid off.

The list of "dos and don'ts" written for those close to someone dealing with infertility is, perhaps, one of the most important parts of this book.If you read The Empty Picture Frame because you know someone living with infertility, pay close attention to this section and take Jenna's words to heart.

Thank you, Jenna and Mike for having the courage to educate others by putting your story out there for all to see.Best of luck to you both!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow...such a moving story!A great infertility resource!
I first saw Jenna on the Oprah Winfrey show.I immediately felt connected to her because of her struggle with infertility.I could totally understand her pain. She was the first person I had seen that I honestly felt I could relate to.

So when I saw that she had written a book about her story, I just had to buy it.This book is an amazing resource for infertility! It gives the full picture of what it's like to go through all the stages of infertility, from before "trying to conceive" all the way through many IVF attempts.Jenna has given the reader an inside glimpse into the life of an infertile.

The way she tells her story (along with her husband's two cents every so often) is so compelling. It really was hard to put down.

This book is not only a great resource to someone personally struggling with infertility but also to those who who know of someone else who is struggling with it.

After I finished the book I gave it to my mom so she could get a glimpse of what I was going through. And most importantly, so she could read the helpful hints Jenna talks about at the end of the book as to how to best support someone going through infertility. These suggestions are so dead on!I wish I would've given it to her years ago.

Overall, I just can't recommend this book enough!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Truth About Infertility
This book tells the truth, the raw, unadulterated truth about what it's liketo walk the path of an infertile couple, trying again and again without success. If you're not infertile, you'll realize empathy and compassion in these pages, and learn what not to say.If you're infertile, you will see yourself here.Jenna holds nothing back. She doesn't make it pretty or cute or lighthearted. She invites you to experience the emotions along with her. This book is an invaluable emotional resource for infertiles and those who care about them.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Empty Picture Frame
What an amazing book! I have gone thru 7 hearbreaking IVF's myself & only heard about this book after my struggles. It was nice to read I was not the only one going thru that terrible pain. I recommend this book to anyone who is struggling with infertility or knows someone going thru it. If this book was out while I was in the worst pain of my life I would have bought 100 copies & gave it to everyone in my family so they would stop hurting me more with all the questions. If you buy this book you will not be disapointed. WONDERFUL to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great read!! I am not alone in my struggle with infertility.
I read this book cover to cover on the day I received it. It is so comforting to know that there are others who are going through the same issues. When you are dealing with infertility you feel that you have to hide your feelings and you cannot share your problems with anyone. I identified with the shame and embarrassment Jenna felt. Jenna is so open with her true feelings and she is helping many people with this book to bring awareness to the issue of infertility. Thank you! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars wonderful way to relax during this stressful time
After more than 3 years of infertility, I had an ectopic pregnancy, and was devastated. It took several months to get back on track, and this CD helped me tremendously.I now have normal periods (for the first time in many years) and feel prepared to move forward with more fertility treatments.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great purchase!
I had been dealing with infertility for over 3 years. After my first failed attempt with IVF, I started searching the web for CDs, books that could help me cope with my situation. I was feeling very down. Before I started my second round of IVF, I purchased this CD. I listened to it every night before falling asleep. It brought me a great sense of relaxation and hope which I think helped me get pregnant. I'm now 9 weeks pregnant! I'm sure many other factors came into play but this CD was another positive tool I had. There is no right formula for dealing with infertility but if you can keep your mind believing it will happen then, it will. Good-luck!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource for Women Experiencng Fertility Challenges
I highly recommend this guided imagery exercise to all women and their partners who are experiencing difficulties with conceiving and/or who have experienced perinatal loss. I decided to use this as an adjunct to talk therapy. I was taken aback with the speaker's stunning efficacy in enabliing me to connect to a level of emotion I hadn't previously acknowledged or experienced. The affirmation segment was especially helpful to my husband; giving him a more significant understanding of my internal, emotional experience. Struggles with fertility are often so hard to talk about and can create such a distance between partners; this guided imagery is an excellent tool at bridging emotional connection; and for individual emotional processing.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful, relaxing
The CD really helps me calm down and think more positively. Infertility is a really difficult issue and everything you can do to remain relaxed helps. The only negative is the lady's voice is not very pleasant. The first time I heard it I couldn't stand her voice. But it gets better everytime.I recommend this to anyone who is feeling negative about trying to get pregnant.

1-0 out of 5 stars Talks too fast
I did not like this CD becasue it made me nervous instead of calming me down.I would rather forget I am having infertility troubles than be reminded of it on a CD.She talks way too fast also.It wasn't a relaxing CD for me. ... Read more

This text offers a straight-forward reference to assist in the management of gyn problems I commonly encounter as a Family Doctor. It goes into great detail about anatomy and physiology of gynecologic problems yet is well-organized for use as a "quick reference".For example, it took less than a minute to find the section on hirsuitism to refresh my memory as to what the initial work-up should consist of.

5-0 out of 5 stars finally ... feeling heard and understood
In the midst of one of the most painful struggles of our lives (dealing with infertility), I cannot say how healing it was to finally feel heard and understood. When I first read about the "trauma of infertility" the authors describe, I thought that's exactly it - that's what we're going through!
There are lots of good books out there that deal with infertility, but let this be one of the first ones you read. You won't regret it.

GREAT guide for residents.I used this book and dog-earred many pages.Well worth the money.

4-0 out of 5 stars great review for CREOG
Great book..wonderful quick guide to everything you need to know fast!

I also used this as a quick review for CREOG's, it has all the high yield stuff they'll test you on!

Cons: a slightly larger type version should be considered.

3-0 out of 5 stars Could be better...
For this book, you need a magnifying glass to read it! The print is way too small. It's okay to use when accompanied with a textbook but not great on its own. Additionally, I think it's out of date and not up to ACOG standards. Of the entire 5 week rotation, I picked up this book once!

5-0 out of 5 stars review
best little book I had as a resident, comes in handy at least once a week as a community-hospital-based FP.

5-0 out of 5 stars *THE* OB/GYN Book for your pocket...
You can tell the medical students at your local teaching hospital. They're the ones with the short lab coats and the pockets bulging with small paper-back books.

For those who are in training to become a Doctor a premium is placed on easily-accessible, highly accurate and important information.I remember going through my clinical rotations and thinking that I needed a "pocket" book for every medical rotation to supplement my massive 20-pound, $100 texts while I was on the wards and in the clinic.

Early into my OB/GYN Residency I got the hot scoop - THIS is the book to keep in your lab-coat if you're practicing OB/GYN.By the time I was a chief resident this book had saved me time and heartache and saved my patients from my blunders over and over.Like all "pocket" texts, this one doesn't contain lengthy discussions. But it DOES contain what you need to get through that night on OB/GYN call. And the next one.... and the next.

The treatment for Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (and hundreds of other common clinical situations)- before it's burned into your brain it's right here at your fingertips. It even gives you concise "go-by's" for how to dictate your operative reports for the most common OB/GYN surgeries.

Since I got my first one a decade ago I've never NOT had a copy of this in my lab coat.I use it infrequently now, but when young trainees seem to need a push towards a clue - I push them towards this little gem. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Infertility FAQs in one neat package
When a couple is suffering through infertility, they have a million questions. Fertility Drs. Gordon and DiMattina attempt to cover the basics in a single, reliable source with 100 Questions & Answers About Infertility.

They start with the basics: What is infertility and what does normal reproduction look like? Then they move on to infertility evaluation and treatments. Next they touch on specific problems such as Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, Tubal Disease, Male Factor, and Endometriosis. They address treatment options, specifically Intrauterine Insemination, In Vitro Fertilization, and Third-Party Reproduction. They also answer questions regarding lifestyle (stress, exercise, etc.) in regard to reproduction, and finally they address pregnancy loss. There is also a plethora of statistical information.

If you find yourself in the throes of infertility and you are lost in the lingo, this book may be a good start. It will answer many clinical and technical questions you may have about your problem and where to start. This book will be especially helpful for those who have the conditions mentioned and those who want details on medical measures. It should also help you decide what steps you want to take in the process. The information seems, in my experience, to be accurate and up to date.

What this book won't do for you is answer the more emotional side of infertility. It won't tell you that taking Clomid might cause you to cry for weeks on end. It won't tell you that you will get pregnant. And it won't have a definitive answer for why you aren't achieving pregnancy when all the testing says there is no reason. However, this is a very informative book on many of the more common and clinical aspects of the process.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read
What a great book! This book is a wonderful launching place for someone facing infertility and needing answers.I have already been through some treatments and learned new things reading this book.I liked that the definitions for words used in the text were right in the margin of the page.It is easy to follow, but the authors do not talk down to you.Good balance of information.

5-0 out of 5 stars One stop shopping for all your questions
I've been having infertility issues for almost 6 years and I've purchased several on-topic books during this time. No book covers as much detailed information in as few pages at this one.I read the entire book the night I received it.The authors honestly acknowledge the frustrations accompanying the mysteries of fertility while outlining the proven medical procedures that lead to parenthood. My favorite thing about the book is that it assumes that the reader is an intelligent, resourceful patient who is approaching her infertility with a problem-solving mentality. I wish I had bought this years ago!

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, answers to all our infertility questions!
I have read many books on infertility. The topic can be overwhelming, just as the treatments can be. (I am in my 3rd round of IVF.)"100 Questions and Answers about Infertility" is by far the best infertility book available.First of all, Dr. Gordon makes you feel "normal" by listing all the questions you have, but might not realize everyone else also has. Then he answers them in a manner that is easy to understand, yet technical enough to help you broaden your understanding of infertility. In addition, they have patients who share their first hand experiences in the book. It's another example of how they make you feel less alone during an unchartered experience. (And yes, despite this being my 3rd round of IVF, there is always something new and scary...but this time I could just open up my book, and better understand what was going on!)
I am truly grateful that Dr. G and D wrote this book.It is the perfect handbook for anyone experiencing the trials and tribulations of infertility. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Simply not the book for me...
Goodness, I wish I had read all of the reviews before purchasing this book. When my husband and I found out that we had a few infertility issues to address we promised ourselves to try and stay positive and not to become obessed with having a biological child. The experiences Ms. Swire-Falker had to endure were incredibly unfortunate, but I found myself thinking...stop the procedures and get on with your life. She seemed obsessed with having a baby and I simply didn't relate. My husband and I love children and want to have a family, but not at the cost of my career, our marriage, or financial security. There was some useful information, so I did find the book helpful on some fronts.

5-0 out of 5 stars I LOVED this book!
I just started my first IVF cycle. My best friend who also went throughIVF bought this book for me. She read it and thought it would help me. It really has!
I read it in three days. I laughed, cryed and was uplifted. Elizabeth's story is compelling, heartfelt, but most of all imformative. Believe it or not it was even comforting to know we aren't alone in this world of infertility. If you are having trouble starting a family and would like to explore all of your options, I urge you to read this book. It is brilliantly written.

2-0 out of 5 stars Should be called the IVF Survival Handbook
While the writing is accessible and conversational, I found this book to be heavily biased towards IVF (at one point stating "In vitro fertilization is truly amazing and miraculous."). Falker provides a wealth of information for women considering IVF, but in her descriptions of alternative treatments, she inevitably makes a statement along the lines of "but IVF is better." I know she wishes she had tried IVF sooner, but for some people IVF just isn't an option. In order to truly be an "infertility survival guide" the book needs to have some focus on the positives of other fertility treatments/options. It really should be called the IVF survival handbook.

Her personal experiences made for a nice touch, but I found a lot of it too negative. I really don't want infertility to become the sole focus of my life, so I found how all-consuming her process became very, VERY scary. She does offer some helpful hints on how to tell people that you are struggling with fertility and how to deal with the many off-hand comments that people make about having children & dealing wtih fertility issues (although a lot of her focus is on how insensitive people are, so again... venturing to the negative). Personally, I found the book to be negatively focused and a little disheartening.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good overview of IF.
This book was a quick read with lots of good information. It covers a wide variety of topics, from IF treatments to how it affects your relationship.I really enjoyed this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best
I highly recommend this book for women/couples struggling with infertility. Buy this before you go to your first appointment with your Reproductive Endocronologist - so that you understand the different options which are presented to you and your partner. My husband and I have referred to this book like an encyclopedia over the past 2 years and I am grateful for the author's straight talk.If you want "the skinny" on these issues - this is the book for you. ... Secondary infertility is often a "hidden" issue, and couples suffering from the inability to have another wanted child often feel caught in the netherworld between the childless infertile and parents of larger families. Harriet Fishman Simons, a clinician specializing in fertility issues and a support group leader for RESOLVE, an advocacy group for infertile individuals, has been involved in infertility issues for over 20 years. In her book Wanting Another Child:Coping with Secondary Infertility, Simons discusses the plight of the secondarily infertile--the awkwardness of being among infert
