For the newly diagnosed patient, for the patient who has lived with IBD for years, and for their families, the book's objective is to"make you a better informed patient who can understand what your doctor is doingand why". The clinical efficacy of glucocorticoids in the treatment ofinflammatory bowel disease has been confirmed in a multitude ofcontrolled monocentre and multicentre studies as well as fromobservations of the clinical course of the disease. Although, in thepast, the treatment recommendations, dose regimen, substance selectionand mode of administration were deduced principally from clinicaltrials, in recent years experimental research has yielded a mass oftherapeutically significant new results. This seeks to optimize theclinical effects of the steroids and minimize their adverse events ona rational basis by the application of the knowledge obtained inpharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic models, taking into account thedifferent types of protein binding and the intrinsic activity of thevarious glucocorticoids. However, the transfer of this type of`disease-adapted differential glucocorticoid treatment' into aclinical context involves a critical examination of the `received'notions that have characterized steroid treatment in the past, such asstrictly circadian administration or time-related dose reduction, aswell as proof of the clinical superiority of the new therapeuticapproaches.

The only IBD Book you NEED to have
Banks, Present and Steiner-Grossman have produced what I think is the best book on Inflammatory Bowel Disease on the market.Once again endorsed by the CCFA (an indicator of quality), this book is extremely well written anddefinitely the best laid out book on the market.It's always been a petpeeve of mine that IBD books never seem to have any good pictures orillustrations and this book has a plethora of both.The information isstill your standard IBD stuff - overview of the diseases, medical/surgicaltreatment, emotional issues, IBD in children, in pregnancy, etc. - but itis easy to read and very accessible in attitude.If you have to choosejust one IBD book, I'd recommend this one.
