Book Description

"Drawing on legend, history, memoir, literature, and film, Hussein's stories are meant to be cupped in both hands and savored slowly."-Guardian

In his fourth collection, Aamer Hussein charts the geographies of leave-taking and homecoming, the consolations and rivalries of friendship, the yearnings of adolescence, and maturity's tentative acceptance of longing. Moving from Karachi to England, through India, Java, Italy, and Spain, these exquisite stories engage with the grand narratives of our time.

Aamer Hussein was born in Karachi and moved to London in 1970. He reviews regularly for The Independent and The Times Literary Supplement. He has held visiting posts at the University of Southampton and the University of London, and is a fellow of the Royal Society of Literature.

Book Description

Insomnia is one of the most frequently reported health problems, yet until the publication of this book, the literature lacked a structured and practical approach for clinical management. This volume addresses the need by offering a complete, multifaceted cognitive-behavioral treatment program for chronic insomnia. Using a conceptual model that emphasizes the interplay between maladaptive behavior patterns and dysfunctional sleep cognitions, the book covers all aspects of assessment and treatment. In addition, it is the first to present a systematic approach to withdrawing drug-dependent insomniacs from hypnotic medications. The book also features particularly useful support materials, including detailed outlines of the structured clinical interview for insomnia, sequential therapy sessions, sleep diaries, questionnaires, and other handouts.*

The decade before menopause, says Dr. Stephen R. Goldstein, is a time of profound change--both physically and emotionally--yet many women don't realize this. They may try to ignore subtle-to-bothersome symptoms such as erratic menstruation, "free-floating anxiety, inability to concentrate," forgetfulness, weight gain, sexual difficulties, and insomnia, when they could be effectively treating these problems. Unfortunately, not all doctors recognize perimenopause or know how to treat its symptoms, which may lead them to discount patients' complaints, or worse, suggest unnecessary treatments--including hysterectomies. That's where Could It Be ... Perimenopause? can help.

In clear, supportive prose, Goldstein offers no-baloney advice. "Today's perimenopausal women has neither the time nor the patience to go through four to fifteen years of symptoms without relief," he says. He fully delineates the roles of various hormones, how to determine if you're in perimenopause or not, as well as how to treat the various symptoms to gain control over your life. He's a big advocate of low- and ultra-low-dose birth-control pills: "There is nothing inherently advantageous about bursting the capsule of your ovary and having to repair it each month. There's no reason for having fluctuating levels of hormones floating around unless you want to have a baby." He also recommends some natural and herbal treatments (he tells which ones are more appropriate for menopausal or postmenopausal women, and which are worthless or even dangerous). He's also a big promoter of sonohysterography, a type of ultrasound test that he says could prevent up to three-fourths of all emergency-room visits made by women with excessive uterine bleeding.

With added resources, including URLs for recommended newsgroups, Web sites, and medical databases, along with information about the very latest in treatments (such as crinone, a natural progesterone gel), Goldstein's created an enormously beneficial reference for both women and health-care providers who could stand to brush up on this topic.Book Description

1-0 out of 5 stars Say "no" to perimenopause
Perimenopause is a marketing construct, intended to sell drugs, books and other products by instilling self-doubt and insecurity. Resist the effort to pathologize everything about women's bodies.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thorough Job
I really liked this book's approach to the subject matter.I found a lot of information in here that was helpful and timely. This book is a keeper for my home library.

1-0 out of 5 stars Too Drastic, Too Closed Minded
Well, as one of the previous reviewers said, there were just too many things about this book that were not to like. When you're on a mission of trying to discover "what's happening," you need facts uncluttered by opinion, etc.Would not recommend.

1-0 out of 5 stars Lone voice here
Everyone else raves but I really really didn't like this book. Here are my reasons:
-he rejects all herbal remedies because they have not been FDA approved.I admit there are problems with quality control and no you shouldn't ask the check out clerk for advice on natural remedies but there are other educated practitioners, even doctors, who can give advice on natural remedies.
-he is too quick to recommend a hysterectomy. While he says that you shouldn't have a D & C to try to identify excessive bleeding if you're going to have any surgery you might as well have a hysterectomy, forget myomectomy or any other less invasive surgery.I'm quite happy that I got rid of my fibroids with a myomectomy and still have my uterus - thank goodness my doctor didn't agree with this book.
-the book is 4 years old now and doesn't take into consideration the recent studies which show that HRT may not be the right way to go.I'd like to know how those studies affect his recommendation that all perimenopausal women take low dose birth control pills
-he seems to have only one answer for perimenopause and that's low dose birth control pills.I'm always suspicious of complicated problems that have only one answer.

I'm still looking for a book that I feel comfortable with.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Book for Women Over 40
I spent three years in misery suffering numerous symtpoms that couldn't be isolated by my doctors. Many times, I was told that these symptoms were essentially psychosomatic, or related to my weight, or stress from work. Then my husband found this book in a bookstore while on a business trip...just flipping through it, he immediately recognized the problems that I was experiencing. This book made such a difference for me. It helped me get through the final two years of my perimenopausal period and helped me learn how to manage the symptoms. If you think you might be approaching menopause now (or expect to be in the near future), I encourage you to get this book. It will make the next few years of your life much easier and give you peace of mind and body! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars It really works! Take back your sleep-- and your life! AND stop snoring..
I've struggled on and off with insomnia for the last 18 months. I'm genetically predisposed to it, am naturally anxious. I am an obsessive stress-case, who can't shut my mind off. The Breath Connection described and prescribed in the book really really works. I have read almost everything on sleeplessness, tried all the herbs: Valerian, skullcap, melatonin 300 MICROgram very low does that MIT has prescribed as the right dose. But nothing worked long enough. I cannot take the "non-addictive" pills my physician prescribed for me. Even the homeopathy drops my naturopath gave me would work temporarily and then boom! The sleeplessness would come back again.. I was feeling very despondent but didn't know if sleep clinics were going to be the answer. Plus I would probably never get to sleep in a sleep clinic. Breath Connection has mitigated my anxiety even the back and shoulder pains when staying late at work--and snoring! The first few days you will feel "unusually energetic and well" and if you have been often groggy and tired in the morning this feeling is a bit weird. On the 3rd day I was sleeping, and if you wake up at night, you just go back to sleep. It is an excellent book, also for snoring. I stopped snoring to the delight of long suffering boyfriend! It's so simple, I do not even know if I'm doing the method perfectly but it works. I write this for all the people suffering from insomnia I hope you find the solution like I did. ... Read more

Book Description
It is estimated that one in ten U.S. adults suffers from chronic insomnia. If left untreated, chronic insomnia reduces quality of life and increases risk for psychiatric and medical disease, especially depression and anxiety. There are two forms of insomnia: secondary insomnia, in which it is comorbid with another condition such as psychiatric disorders, chronic pain conditions, or cardiopulmonary disorders, and primary insomnia, which does not coexist with any other disorder, Though insomnia may be caused by any number of things, it is primarily sustained by the development of poor sleep habits (such as varying sleep-wake schedule, daytime napping, and spending excessive time in bed) as an attempt to manage the problem. This treatment program uses cognitive-behavioral therapy methods to correct those poor sleep habits. CBT has been proven in multiple studies to improve sleep hygiene by reducing time spent in bed before sleep onset, reducing time spent awake after first sleep onset, and increasing the quality and efficiency of sleep. Developed by the authors, this evidence based treatment can be used for both primary and secondary insomnia sufferers. Patients are first given information about healthy sleep and the reasons for improving sleep habits, then a behavioral program is developed to address that patient's specific sleep problems. Use of sleep logs, assessment forms, and other homework (all provided in the corresponding workbook) allows client and therapist to work together to develop an effective sleep regimen tailored specifically for each client. Finally, several sessions are dedicated to increasing compliance and problem-solving. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended
Every day you hear of new problems from poor sleep and since 9/11, things seem worse.I was skeptical at first, but Dr. Krakow's simple methods really seem to help me.I like that this book can be read two ways. You can read it for the detail, or just concentrate on the practical steps he outlines at the beginning of each section. This book should be helpful to anyone who knows or thinks she has a sleep problem, difficulties with sleepness, and etc.The author clearly knows what he's talking about!

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for those who can't sleep
This very useful book describes the many things one can do to overcome insomnia, a condition that makes nighttime miserable for so many people. Written by a noted sleep researcher, it outlines the basic principles of sleep hygiene, presenting practical ways readers can make the changes in behavior and attitude that will alleviate their sleeplessness. The equivalent to having several sessions with a sleep specialist, it should be required reading for anyone who often spends a good portion of the night in fruitless pursuit of the sandman. ...
