Product Description
This comprehensive and compassionate book covers everything women need to know about the natural and treatable effects of perimenopause, the changes that occur in the decade before menopause. Steven R. Goldstein, M.D., one of Americas foremost authorities on perimenopause, clearly explains what women can expect when their estrogen levels begin to fluctuate and describes the natural remedies and state-of-the-art medical treatments that can give women the upper hand.Amazon.com Review
The decade before menopause, says Dr. Stephen R. Goldstein, isa time of profound change--both physically and emotionally--yet manywomen don't realize this. They may try to ignore subtle-to-bothersomesymptoms such as erratic menstruation, "free-floating anxiety, inability to concentrate," forgetfulness, weight gain, sexualdifficulties, and insomnia, when they could be effectively treatingthese problems. Unfortunately, not all doctors recognize perimenopauseor know how to treat its symptoms, which may lead them to discountpatients' complaints, or worse, suggest unnecessarytreatments--including hysterectomies. That's where Could It Be... Perimenopause? can help.

In clear, supportive prose,Goldstein offers no-baloney advice. "Today's perimenopausal women hasneither the time nor the patience to go through four to fifteen yearsof symptoms without relief," he says. He fully delineates the roles ofvarious hormones, how to determine if you're in perimenopause or not,as well as how to treat the various symptoms to gain control over yourlife. He's a big advocate of low- and ultra-low-dose birth-controlpills: "There is nothing inherently advantageous about bursting thecapsule of your ovary and having to repair it each month. There's noreason for having fluctuating levels of hormones floating aroundunless you want to have a baby." He also recommends some natural andherbal treatments (he tells which ones are more appropriate formenopausal or postmenopausal women, and which are worthless or evendangerous). He's also a big promoter of sonohysterography, a type ofultrasound test that he says could prevent up to three-fourths of allemergency-room visits made by women with excessive uterinebleeding.

With added resources, including URLs for recommendednewsgroups, Web sites, and medical databases, along with informationabout the very latest in treatments (such as crinone, a naturalprogesterone gel), Goldstein's created an enormously beneficialreference for both women and health-care providers who could stand tobrush up on this topic. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Why couldn't a doctor have explained this years ago?
This book explained it all.I found out I've been in perimenopause for probably 7 years now and didn't know it.I kept up my GYN appts. once a year, and when I would mention night sweats years ago, she's tell me it was too soon.
The forgetfulness really had me wondering.I had just lost my mother in April 2009 and she had suffered toward the end with dementia.I kept thinking I was just over stressed taking care of her and dad and my husband.Trying to be a grandmom, wife, mother and caregiver and working full time.I would take a walk and think to myself that the old line was teenagers think they know everything.I thought, maybe they do.I know I was a lot quicker with figures, etc. when I was in my teens and twentys. Now, thanks to this book, it all makes sense.I may not like the whole aging process, heck, taking care of everyone, I've really had it "jambed down my throat, the good, the bad, and the ugly of it".But, at least, I have a "reason" for it.Oh, and I'm 49 years old.I'll be 50 in June 2010.It isn't too early. Now, I'm going to find a new GYN that actually listens to me and takes me serious. My regular physician ran my bloodwork upon request after I got this book, and shazam, batman, my hormones are all over the place.
I wished I'd gotten this book 5 years ago.

5-0 out of 5 stars Every woman should know . . .
This book had a lot of great information on what changes take place in woman's body in the years just before menopause referred to as perimenopause and what can be done to alleviate some of the more bothersome symptoms. It will put your mind at ease with what you may be going through and having a difficult time with. I would recommend this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Say "no" to perimenopause
Perimenopause is a marketing construct, intended to sell drugs, books and other products by instilling self-doubt and insecurity. Resist the effort to pathologize everything about women's bodies.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thorough Job
I really liked this book's approach to the subject matter.I found a lot of information in here that was helpful and timely. This book is a keeper for my home library.

1-0 out of 5 stars Too Drastic, Too Closed Minded
Well, as one of the previous reviewers said, there were just too many things about this book that were not to like. When you're on a mission of trying to discover "what's happening," you need facts uncluttered by opinion, etc.Would not recommend. ... Read more

Product Description
Zen and the Art of Sleep offers a surprising discovery for insomniacs. The problem isn't sleep. The problem is trying to capture and control sleep. Readers new to Zen Buddhism are gently guided down this reflective path. Along the way, emotional baggage and misguided endeavors that feed insomnia fade away. Each chapter builds upon previous insights and ends with Zen Practice exercises that reveal awake and asleep to be part of the same moving stream. Unblocking that flow allows the inevitable bedtime moment of drowsiness, a moment not so different from any other, to proceed naturally and without effort. Illustrated by Zen artist Andy Lee. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Truly Understanding Sleep
So you have tried everything and can't seem to get to sleep. This book will change the way you approach sleep and that, in turn, will change your life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Novel approach that will be useful for many.
I noticed early that telling people, "Try to sleep" caused a dramatic increase in measured muscle tension, preventing sleep."Trying" interferes with much we'd like to do. The author gently guides readers toward an understanding of oriental philosophy and his related approach to sleep.I'm pleased to see that the book was enjoyed and found useful by a physician well trained in more standard approaches. Those who aren't familiar with those approaches (which he lists) might benefit by also reading the Harvard book on sleep or one of the early books by Peter Hauri. Those with all that knowledge, and more, will still benefit from reading this slim, gentle book as it destroys some dominant, but false assumptions of our culture. Peter also observed the effect of telling people to "try" and developed a way around it, becoming a "personal researcher."My own book uses another method, refined by twenty years experience with patients and also suited to those who are excessively sleepy, such as narcoleptics.Book samples are available for review and comment.

5-0 out of 5 stars A new approach to a cure for insomnia
Sleep, despite being something that so many do without effort, is something that eludes so many as well. "Zen and the Art of Sleep" is a guide to attaining a better night's sleep through the principles of Zen Buddhism. Stating that sleep is not something that can be controlled and as soon as one stops trying to do so, sleep should come much easier into their lives. A new approach to a cure for insomnia, "Zen and the Art of Sleep" is something to be considered.

5-0 out of 5 stars Truly useful "compass" for the insomniac
This is a welcomed book for the insomniac, as well as for any one with an interest in sleep.I practiced "traditional" Sleep Medicine for 20 yrs (now retired), and recognize the need for more options to help people sleep.Inspite of knowing little about Zen, I found this book was quite readable and easy to follow.
The author suffered with insomnia for years, and pursued the traditional modalities and approaches with little success. He then took "up Zen" and found it useful in resolving his insomnia!Although the mention in the book that thinking itself interferes with sleep is well known, most of the approach to sleep and sleeplessness discussed is not something found in the Western-tradional Sleep Medicine or psychology literature."A Zen approach is about experiencing reality free from any distortions," "Zen is about removing all manner of interpretation in order to replace concepts with direct experience" and finally, "there is no right way: there is only how things are, which can rarely if ever be captured by a set of beliefs" sums up the points Mr. Chiles makes that I found most useful in differentiating his approach to the techniques I practiced for years with varying success (cognitive behavioral therapy, medication, relaxation methods). It would be confusing, and a disservice for me to try and further discuss what I "learned" from this book.Suffice to say that I have actually followed what is suggested and found it simple, highly useful, and effective, in helping with my occasssioanl bad night of sleep! Also, I would highly recommend this book to my patients if I were still practicing Sleep Medicine.
"Zen and the Art of Sleep is like a compass" (pg 20), I agree; this book is a very useful guide to help everyone sleep well.

Peter Kolinsky is among the world's foremost experts on rare books, so expert that he had a prestigious job at one of the country's biggest auction houses, until black-market dealers took an interest in him. Since losing his job and narrowly avoiding jail time, Peter's lived a lonely life in a tiny apartment, with a menial publishing job he hates. Things look like they might turn around when, looking for a late-night snack, Peter wanders into Insomnia Cafe and meets Angela. It's a book lover's dream until Oblomov, the black marketer who ruined Peter's life, returns to pull Peter back into his business. 4-0 out of 5 stars A Challenging Book, But a Truly Worthwhile One
I first noticed M.K. Perker's work as the artist on Cairo, and later on the ongoing series Air.Both of those were with writer G. Willow Wilson, and both showcased Perker's ability to illustrate serious, and sometimes abstract, tales with light and airy pencils. The same style drives Insomnia Café, Perker's new graphic novel, which he both wrote and drew, that takes several bizarre twists and turns before reaching its interesting payoff.

Insomnia Café is an often dense mystery that centers on Peter Kolinsky, a nebbish who has trouble sleeping and thus has even further trouble making it to work on time. He's constantly in trouble with his boss, as well as just about everyone else he encounters. He's a well-crafted character, not only in looks but in execution: Perker perfectly elicits a man who just can't get his act together, who drifts aimlessly through life and career while others attempt to pull them back on track. Moreover, we feel the exasperation that those around him feel, watching him fail again and again at even the simplest efforts--like ordering food deliveries.

But while all of that shows how dramatically and painstakingly Perker crafts his protagonist, it's not the real story of Insomnia Café. The real story here involves Kolinky's continuous trips to the titular restaurant, where he meets a young woman who introduces him to a library archiving every single book currently being written. Mixing this magic realism with the story of a man who can't get his life together fits well, especially when combined with Perker's art, which takes on an almost caricature-like appearance at times.

The book begins in medias res (with Kolinksy in possession of a stolen artifact and being chased by mysterious agents) and then jumps back in time to bring us up to speed. Perker does these time jumps frequently throughout, giving us flashbacks without warning or explanation. As such, it can be difficult to follow the story, but it's worth the attempt, and there's always a payoff for the efforts. That is to say, panels that don't make sense at first gain new meaning and understanding by reading further. Perker has created a challenging book, but a truly worthwhile one (I haven't even mentioned Kolinsky's criminal past, which also comes into play in the story; just trust that it all does indeed come together satisfyingly as the story unfolds).

I should also mention the cover of the book, given that it's so strikingly well done but also becomes more interesting as you read the book. It will give away no spoilers to say that Grant Wood's American Gothic plays into the story, and as you realize how and why, looking at Perker's emotive drawing of Polinsky on the cover takes on new resonance.

Insomnia Café is probably not inappropriate for teen readers (aside from violence and coarse language, there isn't too much adult content here), but it will most likely appeal mainly to adults.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Satisfying Surprise
The first time I heard of this graphic novel was in an article in Comic Shop News. The plot interested me immediately. An insomniac who is trying to stay out of a dangerous profession, who stumbles upon a 24 hour cafe where he befriends a waitress that soon introduces him to a library stocked with copies of all writer's works in progress. Then I made the mistake of searching out reviews which almost deterred me from buying the book.It seemed the opinions I found were mildly positive at best.During a trip to the comic shop I decided to seek out the book anyway and during a quick flip through was drawn to the illustrations. So I decided to go ahead and give it a try. When I noticed it was only 80 pages I immediately felt like I'd be wanting for more at the end of the story if I indeed liked it.Which I did like it more than I imagined I would.Without giving away anything since there is an unexpected surpise toward the end, I have to say it is exactly the length it should be, so I disagree with the previous review written here. The story ends in a place where it can keep the impact it has. The only thing I can't help but say is that it didn't take long from the start of the story for me not to like the main character all that much.

4-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, interesting idea, somehow unfinished
Perker's drawings are gorgeous, and the story includes several fascinating elements, woven together in (often) surprising and engaging ways. Still, I can't help but wonder if this is the first installation in a longer story - so many threads left out of the loom. ... Read more

In The Noam Chomsky Lectures—an angry, funny, political tirade—Brooks and Verdecchia challenged audiences to wake up. With Insomnia, the duo’s latest collaboration and a much darker show, awakening has become a curse. John is a man skeptical to the point of tyranny. So rigorously demanding of the world and himself that he has lost the power to sleep, he is driving himself and his wife to distraction. "Insomnia turns Chomsky’s politics inward—at what point, Insomnia asks, do healthy skepticism and reasonable doubt turn into paranoia and paralysis? Unfolding in a series of ever more surreal vignettes, Insomnia employs a powerful brand of non–linear, disorienting story–telling that skilfully focuses an audience’s attention."—NOW

5-0 out of 5 stars The book I've read first on insomnia
When you go to the doctor with a sleep problem, don't be surprised when the doctor tells you to educate yourself about it. After some research, seems to me, that's going to be the most important part in the cure. Fortunately, there are good books to help you to do so.I found that Samuel Dunkell's "Goodbye insomnia, hello sleep" is a very helpful book. Very informative on how we sleep, how we dream, how our inner clock works, what causes insomnia, on the different types of insomnia, and on how can we get rid of it. Writes about a lot of contributing factors. The author also writes about actual patients, explains their cases, and the solutions. That makes the book lengthier (300+ pages), but makes it a lot easier to understand, and more entertaining too.I would recommend it not only for people with sleep problems, but for anybody, who wants to understand these things better, and wants to learn, how to get the most out of the night and the day.Because the difference between having a goodnight sleep or not is - night and day... ... Now that the popularity of alternative medicine has made just about everyone aware of the health connection between mind and body, it seems like a fine time to bring back this book, originally written by the late psychiatrist Caprio and newly revised by Caroline Miller, dean of academic studies at the American Institute of Hypnotherapy. To the authors, self-hypnosis is an ideal way to reach a state of relaxation and concentration that will allow you to send healing messages to your body and really get it to listen. The easy-to-follow text includes several methods of hypnotic induction, and instructs readers on using the process to lose weight, sleep better, overcome depression, improve their sex lives, slow the aging process, and conquer other health difficulties that are now widely acknowledged to depend quite a bit on subconscious mental states. The authors acknowledge that hypnosis is often misunderstood, and they devote quite a bit of effort to overcoming misconceptions and getting readers to take it seriously as a healing force. --Ben Kallen, Personal Growth editor ... 1-0 out of 5 stars much too wordy and patronizing
This book is mainly trying to convince the reader that hypnosis isn't bad for you. I happened to assume that already, that's why I bought the book.
As to the actual content - unfortunately never got that far. I read about half the book, got bored and ordered a few others.

If you are serious about hypnosis - check out the booklist on brainchanger.com:

in particular: "The New Encyclopedia of Stage Hypnotism" By: Ormond McGill. There are quite a few others and many on NLP on this list as well.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very easy to read yet very effective
This book was an easier read than many hypnosis books on the market. There are also many relaxation scripts to help get beginners started.I have been exposed to many types of hypnosis practices and I must say that Ilike self-hypnosis the best, but I do feel that some exposure to aprofessional can be very beneficial.I have been using this book as an aidfor about 4 months and I must say the changes are indescribable. I havelost weight (a lot!), become more disciplined in my studies and have a morerewarding relationship with my boyfriend of 4 years. Also, since thesuggestions are my own that I am giving, then I am not as prone to acceptsuggestions from others and as result, I am more aware of negative energyamongst other people and don't take it on.This is a great book and inconjuction with other tools such as relaxation, some exposure to personaltherapy, it can/will have amazing effects and the that is the truth!

If you care about yourself and well being, this book is for you! The book is easy to read and enjoyable. You can apply self-hypnosis to almost anything in your daily life. There's no magic in hypnosis, it's all aboutthe positive attitude and response. The book in general has very good tipson how to relax and have a better way to live. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Read it one day - though I didn't have insomnia
This was an ok book. This appears to be written after the movie (as opposed to a lot of novels that are made into movies). How is this significant?Well, b/c a lot of times movies have to cut things out of books to fit into a two hour movie. In this case, though, the book reads like a movie. The good thing with that is that it was a quick read (I read it one day). The bad thing is that it never really expanded on any of the ideas.I never saw this movie and I bought for ten cents, so I would say I got my money's worth. But this is not something I would recommend. Will Dormer was not a very likeable character in the book and the author (which probably goes along with the movie) never gives us any "suspects" throughout the book or any real motivation for the crime. We get only a glimpse into what happened. But the book is pretty straightforward and if you like quick reads, go ahead and read.Or maybe just go see the movie instead.

1-0 out of 5 stars Another stolen idea! :-(
I really wonder if American moviemakers and authors [borrow] so much European ideas just to make money??? I never read or saw an American "remake" that even came close to the original...

Is there NO possibility to rate it with zero stars?

3-0 out of 5 stars A Typical Mystery Novel
A fictional story of two Los Angeles detectives, sent to a small Alaskan town to investigate a murder in Nightmute.Insomnia has an unusual twist half way through the story, where the main character Will Dormer, abuses his authority as a detective. I didn't find this novel to be any different than any other typical mystery,it was boring and slow through the first seven chapters, then it finally picked up the pace in the investigation of Kay Connel. Personally it's a good action packed mystery, that keeps the reader anticipating what will happen next. The whole novel is well thought through and I'm looking forward to watching the movie Insomnia, based on the novel.

Robert Westbrook, dosen't give very good descriptions of the main characters, in order for the narrator to have a general ideal of their appearances. I also disliked where pictures of the main characters from the movie were placed in chapter fourteen, because the pictures described scenes in the book before their time, revealing what would happen next and who the killer was. Despite difficulties with the descriptions and pictures, the rest of the novel is very detailed. other than those few flaws he does do a good job, at keeping the reader interested until the end.

Robert Westbrook, has written quite a few mystery novels, Insomnia being his most recent. I think he's an author who has not yet became well known and he hasn't done very many novels, therefore he is an author I would keep an eye on. To be honest I have not read any other books by him, but I would like to read his others just to see how well he has progressed over time. So if you like short mystery novels, Insomnia is a book I'd recommend reading.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't Buy This Book! What a stinker....
The writing in this book is so elementary it's embarrassing. I picked it up because the premise of the movie sounded interesting, but the writing is so bad it gets in the way of the story. I'm on page 70 and I keeping thinking it's going to get better and then on the next page I wonder where the editor was! I guess this is one case where I'm SURE the movie has to be better.

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific movie -- terrific read
Sometimes, novelizations can be thin retreads of the movie, but Robert Westbrook has done a remarkable job here, shading in the nuances and even giving the reader some further insight into character motivations in this fantastic novel.

Chris Nolan, who directed this movie (as well as indie smash MEMENTO), was successful in creating a smart, slick, yet subtle film, really bringing the best out of the actors who starred in the movie, Pacino, Swank, and Williams. Similarily, Westbrook brought out the best in the backdrop to the story -- Alaska. He has successfully underscored and accentuated the role that the surrounding atmosphere and terrain of the state played in the storyline -- indeed, the atmosphere was like a secondary character in the film, always present, always affecting the protagonist's search for a girl's killer, while at the same time preventing himself from getting charged with murder.

I've read a few of Westbrook's terrific Howard Moon Deer mystery series, and it is obvious from reading those books that he has a firm grasp on how landscape affects people and situations, and he took that to the limit here in INSOMNIA.

To sum it all up, it was a terrific thriller of a movie, which Westbrook took to the next level in this compelling novelization. I hope he writes more of them -- he clearly understands the genre. ... Read more

Product Description
Written by nationally known psychiatrist Hyla Cass, Kava: Nature's Answer to Stress, Anxiety, and Insomnia answers the many questions anxiety sufferers are asking about available treatments. With conclusive documentation of kava's effectiveness and a detailed account of scientific evidence, this balanced, comprehensive book promises to be the definitive guide to the year's newest herbal discovery.Amazon.com Review
What St. John's wort is for depression, kava is for everydayanxiety. Native to exotic locales including the South Pacific islandof Vanuatu, kava is a ritual and medicinal herb that's been used forcenturies. It may not taste fabulous, but it effectively relievestension and anxiety without affecting one's alertness or mentalcapacities or resulting in addictions, unlike prescription drugs suchas Valium. Written by Hyla Cass, M.D., a well-known alternativemedicine consultant and assistant professor of psychiatry at UCLA,Kava: Nature's Answer to Stress, Anxiety, and Insomnia is anintelligent, engaging reference to this increasingly popular herb.

Cass clearly explains the herb's chemical composition without delvinginto turgid scientific mumbo jumbo, or relying on lifeless quotes fromscientific papers. She also thoroughly covers the herb's variousforms--tinctures, tablets, pastes, powdered extract, and sprays--andsuggests appropriate dosages for various treatments (for insomnia, forinstance, you'd take a larger dose than if you just wanted to calmyourself before a plane flight). Cass also covers herbs that can beused in combination with kava, including valerian, licorice, andGinkgo biloba; suggested dietary changes to improve overallmood and health; possible side effects; and techniques for managingstress in the first place, so antianxiety treatments aren't asneeded. For anyone who wants to know all about what they're puttinginto their body, this is a solid primer. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Not in depth review; only anectdotal stories.
Kava is a great herb and you should know more about this herb. But if you are looking for more than stories that you can find yourself by browsing, this book is not for you.
This book is useless if you are looking for in depth review about kava. The only things in this book are stories and anectdotal experience from kava users that you can actually see on the internet.
The worst thing about this book is the author recommend the use of kava for hyperactive child to stoned them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Kava is fabulous!
I have the pleasure of living in the only city in the country that has an authentic Kava Bar.I've chosen to remain anonymous to keep it underground, where is should stay.Kava is amazing and this book is just another testimonial of that fact.Kava does just what this book claims that it does...it cured my insomnia, and that's a fact.I just dread the day Kava becomes the next frapaccino, because I love it right where it is.It is illegal in Canada and Germany and probably many other places, so I'm hoping that that doesn't happen in the U.S. by people abusing this awesome herbal medication.

3-0 out of 5 stars Someone Check My Pulse...Quick!
Under the spotlight of increasing popularity, Kava...or Kava Kava to those who think twice about using it, is the latest "miracle natural drug," alleged to relieve anxiety and stress without side effects oraddiction. This book is not bad.It certainly is true to its title, discussing in depth how Kava is nature's answer to several common aliments. Yet, in our modern world where the newest "fad" goes fromscientist to corporation to local mall vendor in a matter of months, thebasic question is, "do these things really work?"Take a valium, and you will feel calm.Take a Xanax and your anxiety will be relieved. Most likely, however, you will became dpeendant on these drugs andeventually resort to robbing your local Dairy Queen to support you habit, unless friends intervene and get you to Rehab in time.So there is thetrue magic of Kava.No dependancy...no side-effects...it is legal...and itworks? Well, this book certainly believes it does, and it backs thisassertion with several well laid out and researched chapters. The problemis, is that Kava has been used for centuries in elaborate rituals onbeautiful tropical islands as the sun is setting and soft island musicplays in the background.Oh yea, and they use Kava. Now, if you are notrelaxed after that, you are either already dead, or you might as well giveup your dream of becomming stress free.Does Kava work in the bog city, with big city pressures? Will a Kava Latte be that far off, or even a Kavaencrusted chicken breast?Nothing is certain as yet.If anything, thisbook is a step forward in educating the public on a possibly promising newalternative to presciption drugs.A message to the reader, however: Keepan open mind and remember, the Metabolife people know where you live.

5-0 out of 5 stars Congratulations and gratitude
This book continues the progress that is being made in the effort torediscover the essential links between natural medicine, the humanpersonality, and true health. It can be read to further personal wellbeing and it is a testament of how our leading western physicians arereturning to honest, scientifically vaild remedies for what ails us.Thisbook is not only about kava--though it is the most readable account of thetraditional and modern uses of that wondrous herb--moreover it encouragesus to find our own health in the matrix of Her Mystery that is our own deepself.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book on Kava I've seen!
Another exemplary achievement from Dr. Hyla Cass following hot on theheels of her outstanding bookon St. John's Wort.Well-presentedinformation on this herbal stress reliever, with case histories, researchinformation, even a discussion on the growing, politics and economics ofthe kava industry. This includes attention to issues of sustainability, fairness in compensating the native South Sea Island growers and legalissues regarding herbal claims under DSHEA.Thorough coverage withsomething for everyone! A must-read.Highly recommended! ... Read more
