3-0 out of 5 stars Only some good science and mainly an ad for his center
Some of science behind his IBS treatments is sound. It focuses on having the correct kind of bactiera, etc. in the gut, testing for that and testing the bad bugs for antibiotic susceptibility which most places don't do.

Then there is the controversial food allergy testing. He blames food allergy for anything and everything. The idea of minor food allergies is controversial and the testing the labs do may not be valid or reliable no matter what he says.Even some of Dr. Wangen's peers at the Bastyr University argue against food allergy testing, saying it is too unscientific- the way the testing is done is not right.Although she also says it is not likely to do harm, just cost money. Some people seem to get relief, however, from eliminating foods from their diet.

Studies should be done to quantify and ascertain the real success rate of his treatments, because he actually has REAL causes for a condition and is not just doing the stupid song and dance doctors love to do of blaming the patient and telling them it is all in their head. They do this especially if the patient is female. The testing needs to be validated and symptoms correlated to positive results. No such test/ study exists as of today.

IBS is a real disease that needs to be taken seriously and treated. It does not surprise me that not many general doctors are even trying to find a solution, mainly because doctors don't care about their patients. In fact, this would hurt buisness and they don't like that- they are basically all about money. But why aren't other naturopathic doctors doing what he is doing? Why is he the only one?? Is he REALLY the only one?And if what he does is so great, why doesn't he train people and open other centers in large cities?
Two things about this book irritated me. First off, much of the information on the science is on his website.I payed too much for the book to tell me only a litte more about that.Next, much of the book talks about his former patients supposedly and how great they are doing now thanks to his treatments. It is a huge plug for his center.

If you want the testing done you can call them and they will tell you what labs they use.If you want to go to his so call miraculous center you have to go at least once and give him about $900 to $2000 (travel expenses and Seattlite attitude towards non-Northwestern persons not included). That is impossible for me.The book is almost useless if you can't go to Seattle. His attitude is kind of like he is the IBS god, and so what's a little world travel just to get his miracle cures? That maybe OK for some people, but not everyone. If you look at the 5 star reviews you will see many of these people live in Seattle or WA state.
Don't buy the book. Just go to his website and everything will be explained to you. Also do some research on food allergies- you will see he may not be all he's cracked up to be.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Book is Wonderful!
I am so thankful for this book-& my primary doctor. I cannot afford to travel to this clinic, unfortunately so I mentioned the food allergy test that I read about to my doctor & he agreed to try it. The Gastroenterologist I had been diagnosed at told me I'd have to live with the pain after giving me meds (that stopped working, or only worked for a short time). I now know that I am allergic to corn, soy, wheat, among other things. My doctor was amazed because he said that generally you know when you're allergic to a particular food. The problem is I was allergic to so many. This book saved my life. The pain was the worst & I finally had an answer. (I'd eaten most of these foods for years with no problem.) I had only suffered from IBS for a year so I had no idea it was food. I would love to go to this clinic & if it's half as helpful as this book I would highly recommend it. This book is wonderful & explainsa lot. I am so thankful that it was written for those of us who are suffering unnecessarily.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Irritable Bowel Syndrome Solution
The best book that I have read on IBS. It gives you a "solution" to the problem. Unbelievable, finally, something honest and to the point. I couldn't put it down!

5-0 out of 5 stars IBS Help
This book is really good.It summarizes all causes of IBS.
It helped me a lot to understand what I can do to "cure"
myself.
If you have IBS please look up the IBS 100 Audio programmm.
This product helped me the most.

5-0 out of 5 stars REAL SOLUTIONS FOR EMBARASSING SYMPTOMS
Although I had been previously diagnosed with celiac disease with dairy intolerance, this book made me consider that my ongoing symptoms were more than gluten or dairy contamination accidents. In simple, layman's language, Dr. Wangen explains the 'normal' digestive process and problems that can arise in that system (like diarrhea and constipation). Then he describes the common medical approaches ('Treating the Symptoms, Ignoring the Cause') for 'IBS' symptoms. That section describes the typical journey of misdiagnoses and dead ends, which many celiacs take before getting a correct celiac disease diagnosis.Next he discusses the common causes of 'IBS' symptoms, which include celiac disease, food allergies and 'bugs' (such as bacteria imbalances, yeast and parasites). Finally he tells how he determines what causes a patient's symptoms and the appropriate treatment to eliminate those symptoms.

This book convinced me to visit Dr. Wangen's IBS Treatment Center and test for food allergies and other `bugs'.After learning I had 2 additional food allergies and a bacterial imbalance, which caused my continuing symptoms, I followed Dr. Wangen's dietary guidelines to avoid painful allergy reactions and began treatment to restore natural bacterial balance.Although I'm still treating bacterial imbalance, my ongoing symptoms are slowly disappearing and I'm beginning to experience better digestion than I have in years.

If you have been diagnosed with `IBS', but still struggle with symptoms, read this book.If you're a diagnosed celiac, who has ongoing symptoms despite abstaining from gluten, read this book.If you're tired of doctors who dismiss your `gut' symptoms as `stress', read this book. This book HAS solutions for IBS.

5-0 out of 5 stars glance first before buying ANY book on a disorder
As any medical professional knows, no illness is categorized by symptoms XYZ alone. There are always variations and this book adjusts to them quite well.I am sorry that previous reviewers didn't glance through the book first and pay attnetion to their own bodies and what works for them.

This books is also wonderful in that it doesn't lable IBS as being "all in your head".It is very objective in describing the many factors that may be causing your IB symptoms.Things like stress, food, fiber, and possible other food triggers.

This book is also short, and doesn't go into a list of supplements you should be taking. It focuses on how to best help yourself, rather than telling you to do #1, #2, or #3, as every body is slightly different. It helps you focus on your symptoms, and what may help to alleviate them.

It is important to understand that IBS in THIS country is often related to the Type A lifestyle, and often times modifing this (by reducing stress, focusing on quality of food choices) often helps. However, things like lactose intolerance and celiac sprue are SEPERATE. You may be lactose intolerant, and by eliminating lactose from your diet you will be fine. However, that may not be a problem for every person suffering from IBS. Same thing with celiac sprue--just because you have IBS does not mean you have celiac sprue. It's VERY important to be honest with your symptoms and treat yourself accordingly.

As a medical professional I believe in western medicine, but I also believe that people need to take responsibility for helping themselves. There is no magic pill or magic cure for everything.Sometimes you have to be patient and go through a little trial and error. This book will help you do just that, but will also help you recognize when you need to revise what you are doing and seek medical attention.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helped Me Out
Well, who doesn't love sitting down and writing a review about a book that tries to make your butt work better . . . anyway, despite the disclaimers about published medical advice regarding this book it helped me out a good deal and out of gratitude I can't help but give it anything less than 5 stars.

After spending several thousand dollars over several years to buy the pleasure of having doctors tell me "I don't know, I think we should do more tests" I frankly gave up on the medical establishment's ability to handle IBS cases. (I don't know if they are afraid of lawsuits or what, but none of the doctors I saw offered any useful advice or even tried a therapy or suggested a special diet or anything. Several friends and family members have reported the exact same pattern in modern medicine for IBS and other symptoms, thousands of dollars spent on inconclusive tests with no medical advice or relief. What's going on?? Doesn't eleventy years of supposedly the most stressful schooling in the world equip doctors with any knowledge beyond telling you that some scribbles in some boxes on test results mean absolutely nothing?)

This book does not offer a cure, as there is none for IBS yet apparently. However it tells you how to minimize symptoms in a holistic manner, and for me this actually worked quite well. Fiverelatively major changes that were included in this book worked for my particular case:

1.) Reduction of stress and balancing my life. This was harder than most people would probably like since for me it involved switching jobs, moving, and temporarily dipping into retirement savings, but quality of life has improved significantly and IBS symptoms reduced commensurately.

2.) Avoiding trigger foods, especially fatty foods, gassy foods, lactose containing foods, and spices. (Sadly, no more Thai and Mexican food, no more ice cream, no more lots of foods but it's worth it.)

3.) Increasing fiber intake. For me whole weat bread does upset my stomach, but a big bowl of Grape-Nuts with Soy Milk every day seems to get the job done.

4.) Eating three regular meals a day. Sometimes hard, especially when my normal response to having particularly bad IBS symptoms was to forgo eating, but this book explains the physiological science as to why this actually makes symptoms worse.

5.) Making exercise a regular habit. I finally feel healthy again.

A lot of this sounds like common-sense stuff, but this book explained why they would work (with other possible strategies for people with different symptoms) and helped me find which foods I could and could not tolerate. With this knowledge I was more committed to seeing the life changes through and with time they improved my condition more than I thought they would.

The sections on how to relax your muscles and your mind through breathing, little physical exercises, and mental techniques are also very helpful.

Since everyone's different I can't promise this book will help you. But with some experimentation this book drastically increased the speed and effectiveness of the lifestyle changes necessary to keep my IBS under control.

1-0 out of 5 stars SORRY THAT IPURCHASED THIS BOOK
I have bought Heather Van Vorous' books regarding IBS -- They are fantastic and I thought that buying THIS book would give additional help! The book is virtually useless. . . The biggest negative about this book was the advice on loading up on wheat fiber --which can cause horrible reactions in IBS patients! In addition, this team could not have researched the reaction of people with IBS to dairy products -- including yogurt -- Be smart and buy Heather Van Vorous' books -- they are simply wonderful and will help manage this condition!

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Guide
This is an excellent guide, giving many details of symptoms, causes, diet change needs, trigger foods, and stress reduction. I refer to it frequently. It has no gender bias that women are the major sufferers of IBS.

4-0 out of 5 stars INTERESTING TOPIC
I certainly do agree on some of the topics mentioned in this book.My understanding as reading this book and also attending at the time a Psycologist, is I think it narrows down yes with some foods you eat, I feel everyone is sensitive to certain foods than others, but what I found very interesting and had a hard time dealing with is to accept the fact that I had IBS.That's the first thing you have to accept. The second is STRESS, what major role that plays on the digestive system. You may not agree, but what I've learned through experience and dealing with stressful situations, yes I do believe this can play a Major Role.I was confinced that stress didn't have a role in this and that I had something wrong with me, even though all my test were coming back fine.I had to accept that I had IBS and handle stressful situations a different way.It could be things from the past, present, or the future. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars NOT Consistent with the current research
Unfortunately a well-intentioned author provides just another "me too" guide, which includes all the persistent misconceptions about the role of diet in IBS-D; D&C; and C subpopulations. Clearly not current with the literature and does not understand the processing of benign antigens by the gastroimmune system nor the process of oral tolerance (which is compromised in this condition leading to the symptoms). As with any of these books, authors do not yet understand the fact that to achieve a high-rate and significant degree of remission the diet must be patient-specific. This cannot be accomplished with the procedures recommended much less with the dietary advice provided. Probabilities dictate that you are bound to find some people who experience some relief from some of the recommendations, and many people who receive little relief. Some will experience worsening of their symptoms. IBS patients will be consuming foods and additives left and right which perpetuate their symptoms using these types of books for guidance which is well out of date.

4-0 out of 5 stars Informative
This book was very informative but I already knew most of what was in the book from research of my own. I would suggest this book to anyone suffering from IBS who wants to learn more about this health issue. Great book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Totally contridictory information
On page 40 she states, "55% of patients reported that bran made their IBH worse and yet the 1st recipe in "20 Recipe You Cannot Live Without" is Raisin Bran Muffins! Whereas in the definitive book on IBS "Eating for IBS" says stay away from whole wheat, milk, cheese, and red meat (which I followed and it solved our IBS problem), this book pushes whole wheat, whole milk, eggs, and dairy.

"Eating for IBS" helped. Following the recipes in this book would not.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very useful guide
I have IBS/D and I found this book to be a very useful guide. It helped me to realize that I had been eating foods that were hurting me.The list of gassy foods is especially on-point and the most comprehensive one that I've seen yet.I've followed the recommendations in this book closely and noticed a marked difference in how I feel.A great guide to keep on hand in your kitchen.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good book if it's not the only one you read.
This book focuses too much on just fiber and not enough on the difference between soluble and insoluble fiber.Insoluble fiber and even a low-fat meal can be a deadly combination for an IBS sufferer. The recipes that the author considers invaluable for an IBS diet contain fat that is far in excess of what I could tolerate. I have a master's degree in nutrition and have also studied food chemistry and baking properties. There are other alternatives to the relativly high-fat and high insoluble fiber that this author recommends. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding; the ideal treatment of a sensitive subject
No need to feel embarrassed:everybody suffers from IBS from time to time.I was looking for a book that would offer more than a study guide to the digestive system combined with an encyclopedia on dietary measures, and I wound up more pleased than ever!Author Rosemary Nicol's diverse handling of everything from symptoms (both physical and emotional) of IBS and similar ailments, to stress management, antidotes and diet is absolutely impressive.

I'm not sure what her background is, but Ms. Nicol's writing exhibits thoughtful, intelligent and especially sensitive insight in discussing IBS from the perspectives of biology, psychology, and personality. Then, she elaborates on a range of antidotes too numerous to detail in this space. The one thing that will forever stand out in my mind after reading this book is the absolutely outstanding sensitivity with which the author discusses the psychological and emotional aspects linked to IBS.Her writing is simple and personable, and she doesn't talk down to the reader by throwing in tons of technical terms. The section on diet is very good, but the greatest comfort comes from someone who knows how you feel, and who looks at every angle imaginable in helping you find solutions to this bothersome condition.I give this my highest recommendation.

5-0 out of 5 stars So thankful for this book
This book has given me hope that there is relief from my IBS. It explains this condition in a way anyone can understand. I discovered things that might be contributing to my symptoms that I had no idea were even remotelyrelated to IBS. It gives a comprehensive overview of the many treatmentsavailable, focusing on the natural and homeopathic. I have begunimplementing many of the dietary and lifestyle changes covered in this bookand look forward to feeling better. I am already feeling better, knowingthat I am taking a proactive role in regards to my health. This book hasgiven me the motivation and knowledge to take control of my own health andlife again. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Available
This is the most comprehensive yet systematic, accessible, and intelligent book I've read on IBS (I had read 7-8 others before finding this one). You can waste much time and money on all sorts of herbal and medicinal products as well as alternative therapies with absolutely no gain--in fact, in many cases you may decide you feel worse.

Salt and Neimark provide a complete analysis of the mind/body/spirit connection, taking you from the causes of your problem to the resolution of it that only knowledge and action can provide.Their approach employs all of the latest research in mainstream medicine as well as some bold and positive understandings that are unliikely to appear in the conventional literature.

The only slight "negative" may be many of the illustrations, which are frankly insipid and unilluminating. On the other hand, they do provide some "breathing space" for the reader, possibly providing the text with a lighter tone and feel.

2-0 out of 5 stars Another worthless book...
I agree its useless; just like so many IBS books. There a million of IBS books out there everyone with their opinion on how to treat IBS.I bought this book and Eating for IBS.I followed the suggestions and got no relief. They are now recycled paper.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to Understand. Worth Having!
I really enjoyed this book because she makes everything very understandable. She also discusses the possible links between IBS and childhood abuse, stress, foods that irritate, etc. She states that studies have shown a link between depression (or stress related disorders) and IBS. She also gives practical advice on how to cope both mentally and physically. Some suggestions may be things you have heard before, but she puts it in such a way so you can really see the benefit of doing these, that outwieghs the inconvenience. A good example is the food diary. Who wants to be bothered with doing that. I didn't...so I never have. But she makes goods points as to why you should take a few weeks out of your life to do something that would likely save you months or years of dealing with the symptoms and pains because you didn't do it.
The read is light and interesting, unlike medical books tend to be. It was helpful to me, a sufferer of IBS as well as Chron's Disease.

2-0 out of 5 stars useless
I have suffered with IBS for many years. This book offered simplistic advice that any reasonable person would have tried already, such as visualization. Save your money, do not buy this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Last IBS Book You Need!
After buying, reading and giving away many, many books on Irritable Bowel Syndrome, I was blessed to have found this one. No recipes in this one, this book makes clear the powerful correlation between IBS and anxiety, IBS and stress, IBS and depression, IBS and fear. After spending a week of increasingly severe pain accompanied by increased anxiety about the pain (or was it increasing pain about the anxiety?)and winding up in the local ER, I realized that I needed to help myself by calming myself. This book tells how. In compassionate, orderly chapters, Barbara Bolen teaches how to truly "break the bonds of IBS." Hooray for her! Hooray for all of us!

4-0 out of 5 stars A book that helps you regain control
IBS can be a horrible thing to suffer with and unfortunately a lot of books written on the subject can even be worse. In my search for books on IBS I found a lot of them written by doctors to be unsympathetic and confusing. That was until I found Barbara Bradley Bolen's book on IBS.Her book was written in a clear and friendly manner and it was a pleasure to read. Also, Bolen writing was very sympathetic to the disease of IBS.

One of the things I liked so much about this book was the case studies that she put in.For example when she was talking about the importance of doing a self monitoring sheet to help spot patterns in your IBS she related what she was talking about to one of her patients. It was helpful because it makes you realize that you are not alone with dealing with IBS.She also has many different activities in her book that can help you spot patterns in your IBS, as well as activities to help you calm down, cope and relieve stress. This book was very helpful in understanding, dealing with, and hopefully reducing the symptoms of IBS.

I recommend this book to those that are suffering from IBS and also those who know and love somene that has it and want to understand more about what it is really like.A great buy. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Made a Huge Difference in How I Feel
I have not yet been diagnosed with IBS, as I am going through testing. However, regardless of what I have (symptoms are consistent with IBS except for typical age on onset), following this author's suggestions for controlling IBS has made a huge difference in how I feel. For months, I have had all kinds of GI issues, some of which were beginning to interfere with work and all of which made me worry on a daily basis that I might get "caught out" somewhere. After beginning the dietary advice in this book, I feel very close to absolutely normal again. The core of my diet is based on soluble fiber, low-fat, non-dairy foods.I am also taking a probiotic supplement and am using Citrucel. This has made all the difference to me!My thoughts are no longer constantly running to what kind of trouble my GI tract is in. With very few days as exceptions, my thoughts are now back on life in general, although I have a new awareness of the importance of what I put in my mouth. How liberating!Highly recommended to anyone who has symptoms consistent with IBS, although as the author responsibly urges, don't accept a diagnosis of IBS without ruling other things out. And, I might add, don't accept a self-diagnosis, either. This book is extremely helpful, but make certain you do obtain a diagnosis of exclusion from the medical profession just to make certain you are not overlooking something critical.

5-0 out of 5 stars Relief At Long Last
I've been suffering for over 15 years with abdominal pain and wretching which lasted for days and days at a time. After having numerous bouts of emergency room visits, gastroenterologists, upper GI series, which are among some of the tests I've taken over the years, since my first attack that awoke me out of a sound sleep in 1991 (all with normal results), it wasn't until last February 2006 my doctor was finally able to put a "label" to these attacks, which was Irritable Bowel Syndrome.I purchased the book by Ms. Van Vorous along with her companion book on how to eat. Both books have helped me enormously!I am truly, truly grateful and thank Ms. Van Vorous for sharing her plight in a book to assist us all.It has been like a "new lease on living".

5-0 out of 5 stars Life Saver
Nothing I tried made a positive difference in my severe IBS until I read this book and followed the guidelines. Though at first it seemed a daunting task to change my attitude about what (and what not) to eat, I soon felt so good that the change in diet became effortless.I highly recommend this book to anyone suffering from IBS.

5-0 out of 5 stars BUY IT! Save yourself tons of grief and toilet paper :)
This book is awesome. I learned what I could/could not eat over 4 years of trial and error. I wish I had this book when I was diagnosed so I could have been saved lots of pain, suffering, grief and frustration.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Book & It's Companion Gave Me My Life Back
Having been diagnosed with IBS 6months ago, after months & months of uncontrollable BM's & fear of even leaving my home, I was glad to have a name for it. But like most IBS sufferers my Dr. simply said "We don't know a cause or a cure. Go home and take Citrucel 2 times daily."

While this helped a little, it wasn't until I purchased and read, "The First Year: IBS" & "Eating for IBS", by the same author and put the concepts to work that I finally got my life back, feel well and go out without fear.

Product Description
The goal of this book is to increase your basic knowledge about Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and potential treatments of this common problem. In this book, I have tried to elaborate on several aspects of this disorder and to answer frequently asked questions. The format of the book is 'question and answer' or 'Q and A'. These are real questions and answers that have been asked by patients and answered by me. The format is very similar to what occurs during a typical visit to your physician's office. Thus, you would save a lot of time and money by going through this book. Additionally, the language of the book is straightforward, in an effort to enable individuals with a non-medical background to understand the basic concepts of IBS. There are currently numerous publications that address Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Many of them are good resources for patients with IBS and most of them are really comprehensive. The advantage of this book over other publications is in the simplicity of the content and emphasis on subtle but important issues that you confront in your daily life. I tried to avoid discussing complicated and impractical issues to ensure that you will easily grasp the major issues related to IBS. My aim is to create a realistic impression of the disorder in your mind. This knowledge not only will improve your understanding of the disorder, but also will provide you with new insight into treatment options. I believe this simple but broad view of the disorder reduces most of your fears and anxiety about IBS and offers you increased confidence and control over your illness. The idea and inspiration of this book occurred to me while I was answering questions that patients usually raise during typical office visits. I thought that by putting these questions and answers in a small booklet, I would save a lot of time for both my patients and myself. I never intended to publish this book on a large scale basis. However, within a short time, 10,000 copies of the first edition were sold and the second edition was published shortly thereafter. The book was very successful and received extremely positive feedback. In this edition, I present the most up to date information and recent advances in the field. I also used the help of several consultants in writing this new edition. Adding their knowledge as well as more than 10 years of experience in diagnosis, treatment and research in this field, I believe this book presents cutting-edge information about IBS in simple terms and helps you to understand the problem. This knowledge will not only increase your coping capability, it will help you to be an effective part of a management team. Here, I use a lot of medical terminology and jargon that you may have already heard of in your numerous medical encounters. However, simple explanations of these words are presented throughout the book. The creation of this book is a wonderful project and was accomplished because of contribution of many particularly all of the patients who have shared their stories with me and were real inspiration of this project. Also, I am very grateful to my consultants who shared their wisdom and knowledge to readers of this book.Thank you all for a job well done.Ashkan Farhadi, MD, MS, FACG ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is a must read for every patient with IBS!!
I highly recommend this book to anyone with IBS. Its Q & A format along with all of the visual tables and flow charts make it very easy for patients, and those closest to them, to understand this very irritating illness.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for patients to comprehend
This is the book that patients need to comprehend this complex disease. Put in a question & answer format will really make it much easier to break down all entanglements of physical, emotional, neurological, and psychological aspects of this relatively hard to treat disease. It is like a stream of valuable info flowing in the brain without turbulence. Thank you Dr. Farhadi for such a great contribution.

5-0 out of 5 stars IBS by Dr. Ashkan Farhadi definitley a must buy
The format of this book is really what makes it amazing. The Q&A format informs readers of the hot topics of IBS while furthering each individual reader's medical knowledge about this widely suffered ailment. For those interested in getting a crash course on IBS this book definitely provides that with informative diagrams, explanatory definitions and easy to understand questions with corresponding answers. And all of this information is packed into a short read of 96 pages.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book gave my life back.
Dr Farhadi's guide is great! All of the information was so helpful. I learned how to manage my illness instead of it managing me. I feel like I have gotten my life back.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Book for Better Well-Being
This book deepened my understanding of IBS and reinforced the importance of my role in feeling better. I very much appreciated Dr. Farhadi's effort to make clinical information more easily understandable, particularly through the question and answer style and the "real-life" examples. The graphics in the book are helpful and inviting as well. This educational book will not only save time for the doctor and patient, but will also play an important part in helping the person living with IBS to feel more active in their own well-being.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great information, interesting read...
I finally understand after reading this how all the organs in my digestive system work. And it's not as gross as you might think. It's interesting to read how different foods and drugs you ingest each affect each organ differently, as well as potentially causing pain to those who are sensitive, or who have different conditions.A must read for those with persistent IBS, heartburn, gas, or other digestive issues.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book for GERD sufferers
This book has it all; concise explanations of the etiology of each gastroenterologic problem and simple practical solutions.Generally, the doctor proposes a high fiber, low fat diet but each patient has to tailor their diet to their own specific needs as clearly there are certain foods that are fine for some, an irritant for others.I would note that contrary to one reviewer, I have made a number of the recipes. They are fairly simple, mostly typical ingredients and have been delicious.
The one problem I have with the book is the contradictory advice with respect to some specific food items. For example, if you suspect that your LES valve muscle is the culprit, the recipes in the 2 week plan contain a good deal of ingredients (citrus fruits, cocoa) which may irritate that condition. The doctor has not provided alternatives to substitute for these ingredients.Generally though, I think the implied message is you have got to get to know your body well as you lower the fat and increase the fiber in your diet.

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative; not bogged down with technical language
If you could purchase one book on GI issues, this should be it.My copy is filled with notes and highights and I have recommended it to many of my friends.I found the technical jargon to be quite easy to comprehend (yes, I know I am also a Dr., but trust me -- we appreciate the simplified lanauge as well). The author also integrates a nutritional aspect, although some of the info can be quite contradictory (check out the cooking section...).Overall, I LOVE this book and I have brought it on many a Dr's visit. Its quite impressive.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gastrointestinal Health by Peikin MD
This book is very useful for a wide constituency of physicians
and patients . It is helpful for gastrointestinal, neurologic
and rhematological problems. The author treats the nutritional
dimension of our health. For instance, milk may harm ulcers
and exacerbate other problems in the GI tract. Spicy foods may
aggravate inflammations. The author explains that the small
intestine digests proteins and splits amino acids and enzymes.
The digestive system interacts with the circulatory system.
Nutrients travel to the liver which secretes bile and removes
toxins from injested foods. With the exception of fats, all
nutrients enter the bloodstream via the liver. Undigested
fiber evacuates. White bread, chocolate and pastas clog the
digestive system. Spasms aggravate existing digestive disorders.
These spasms may take the form of abdomenal discomfort,
IBS, Crohns Disease and diverticulosis. Pancreatitis is a
steady increase in abdomenal discomfort aggravated by alcohol.

Sandostatin treats pancreatitis. Certain foods contain gluten.
The gluten can aggravate existing gastrointestinal conditions.
Eliminating wheat, rye and sweets helps to alleviate symptoms.
Stress is an aggravating factor with regard to the GI tract.
An increase in fiber helps the tract operate better. In addition,
the GI tract needs micronutrients and vitamins to aid in
the digestive process. This book is excellent as a health
maintenance tool.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book was a lifesaver
I suffered for a year before this book came to my rescue.Once I started having stabbing pains after I ate, a friend let me borrow her copy to seek some relief. After an endoscopy and a trip to the emergency room with excrutiating pain, I finally consulted the book and learned that my problem may go further than acid reflux. At my second trip to the ER I insisted on having my gallbladder tested. The ER doctor was not interested in going that direction, but he placated me and let me have an ultrasound. That revealed that I had an enlarged gallbladder and gallstones.I had surgery the next day to remove the gallbladder.Had I not read the book and become informed, there is no telling how much longer I would have had to suffer (the ER docs were content with medicating me and sending me home and not trying to figure out what was wrong). It helps to educate yourself when you know something is not right with your body, because doctors do not know everything.I had seen two doctors previously, and neither had an inkling that my gallbladder might have been my problem.I highly recommend this book to anyone that has digestive problems. ... Book Description

IBS is one of our nation's most untalked-about ailments, but millions of people - mostly women - suffer from the debilitating condition, one that must be controlled primarily through diet. Contrary to what may sufferers believe, eating for IBS does not mean deprivation, never going to restaurants, boring food, or an unhealthily limited diet. It does mean cutting out such trigger foods as red meat, dairy, most fats, caffeine, alcohol, and insoluble fiber. Heather Van Vorous, who has suffered from IBS since age 9 and gradually learned how to control her IBS symptoms through dietary modifications, collects here 175 recipes she has created over 20 years. IBS sufferers will be thrilled to discover that they can enjoy traditional homestyle cooking, ethnic foods, rich desserts, snacks, and party foods - and don't have to cook weird or special meals for themselves while their families follow a "normal" diet. 5-0 out of 5 stars excellent book and recipes
I've battled IBS since I was a kid and feel safe eating the foods recommended in this book. The recipes are good, the author provides good explanations and suggested changes, and they are easy to make. I've passed along several of the recipes to friends without IBS because the meals are so good!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
This book is very informative and has terrific recipes inside of it. I have had IBS for 6 years or so. I use digestive advantage and this book is a asset to my diet needs.

4-0 out of 5 stars Valuable information, she's been there
I loved the first 30 pages of this book, it gave so much insight and valuable information about what to stay away from, what foods triggered attacks, and what you can eat.
You can tell she's been through it all. Her descriptions of IBS, I feel like she's talking about me.

A lot of the recipes are a little bit hard, especially the soups and main dishes. I can't find catfish anywhere her, or harissa. There are a lot of odd and hard to find ingredients. I suppose I could substitute, but then with IBS, that detracts from the main point of finding out what your body can handle and not handle.

Usingher information on eating only egg whites, french bread, and watching soluble and insolube fat intake. I have thankfully not suffered an attack in a week.

I would definitely recommend this book to anyone with IBS, just for the first 30 pages alone.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Book --Delicious Recipes!!!
Thank You Heather from the bottom of my heart!!I have suffered for 50 years not knowing what was wrong with me.Now thanks to Heather, her wonderful cookbook and her website (helpforibs.com)I know I am not alone and I am feeling better everyday plus I have lost 30lbs without even trying. If only the Medical Community would wake up and listen to their patients so many would not have to suffer anymore!

2-0 out of 5 stars Good guide, but the recipes are too time consuming
I bought this book after reading the guidelines on the author's website.I'm a college student who was just recently diagnosed, so I was looking for recipes I could make for my new lifestyle. From what I tried, and from reading through the rest of the recipes, it's all very time consuming. Her suggestions aren't very practical for the average American.

For example, I made Will's Lemony Rice Pudding... it took me a few hours to make, and required my constant attention. She suggests to make a double batch to eat through out the entire week, and hyped the recipe up to being this delicious pudding.I found it bland, couldn't even figure out how to improve it, and I didn't even eat it all.

If you're looking for a diet to relieve your ibs symptoms, just follow what's on her site.Don't bother to buy the book, there's plenty of pre-existing recipes that already follow the guidelines, or ones you can change slightly.Just get the basics down, and you're good to go.

If anything, request the book from your local library system for the more detailed guidelines and a few recipes. ... Read more

Book Description

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is the most common functional gastrointestinal disorder, causing pain, discomfort, and embarrassment to millions. While medically based treatments have demonstrated only limited effectiveness, recent research strongly supports the role of psychosocial factors in both symptom expression and symptom control. This book presents a brief cognitive-behavioral treatment approach that is suitable for use with individuals or groups. Delineating a clear medical rationale, the authors help clinicians both to reduce the stigma associated with IBS and to overcome client resistance to psychological treatment. Effective techniques are outlined for helping clients manage anxiety, anger, and shame; enhance their self-efficacy and stress management skills; and alleviate gastrointestinal distress. Session-by-session guidelines are illuminated by such useful features as sample therapist-client dialogues, lists of important points to cover, troubleshooting tips, and examples of recommended handouts and forms. Also covered in depth are treatment issues specific to women.

5-0 out of 5 stars Effective, user-friendly program for IBS
While this book is written for practitioners, it provides information and insight which can be useful for the sufferer of irritable bowl syndrome (IBS) as well. This may be especially true for many of the over 20 million individuals in the US alone who suffer from social anxiety disorder - a fear ofbeing negatively evaluated and humiliated in social situations -who suffer from this painful and embarrassing disorder as well.

Given that the diseased-based biomedical model can't adequately account for these gastrointestinal symptoms and their psychological effects, it is gratifying to see an empirically-supported cognitive-behavioral treatment for IBS which is effective.

In addition to its gender and social context issues, its comprehensive set of treatment recommendations includes emphasis on coping with shame, anger, assertiveness, self-efficacy, social approval, perfectionism, control, self-nuturance, and performance anxiety. To assist the therapist in facilitating the client's learning, the book also includes recommendations, troubleshooting guides, common problems and myths, case histories, scripts, and client-therapist dialogues.

This is an excellent volume on a condition which heretofore has received little attention.

4-0 out of 5 stars Cognitive Behavior Therapy for Irritable Bowel Syndrome
Written by Brenda Toner and her colleagues, who have worked extensively on psychosocial aspects of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), this manual provides a thorough, yet accessible, introduction to the currentunderstanding of IBS and cognitive behavioural approaches to its treatment.

One of the particularly interesting aspects of the book is theattention paid to gender socialisation and social stigma as factors whichmay help to explain both the high proportion of female IBS outpatients andsome of the central concerns of the patient group. After summarisingcurrent research into the biological, psychological and social factors thatcontribute to the disorder the second half of the book outlines thecognitive behavioural therapy program developed and implemented by theToronto group. A detailed outline of session themes and session contentis included. Case studies and sample scripts are used throughout makingthis book clear and interesting to read.

Beyond its use as a manual toguide health care professionals in the management and treatment of patientswith IBS, this book provides a great insight into the nature of thedisorder and the impact it has on patient's psychological state and day today lives. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars psychological BS
I ordered this book with high hopes and was very disappointed. It was very 'deep' and psychlogical. It was hard to follow and really put me off.I was recently diagnosed with IBS and I got no help from this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Good information, but bad book.
This book contained some very useful and helpful information regarding IBS. However, the organization of the information was horrible. He mentions things without explaining them. Then later in the book he explains them, but there is no way to connect the two chapters until you have read them. He reiterates himself to no end and on trivial matters. It is not a good book to read and doesn't focus on IBS as the title might lead one to think.

4-0 out of 5 stars good info with a touch of spirituality
Being a person who went to the doctor and was handed a pamphlet on Metamucil, and told to `cope because there is no cure for IBS'....this book was a HUGE HELP!There is a lot of basic info, but also some solid advicewith strong references to other experts.I loved the way it put my mind atease regarding so many of my symptoms. This book is the beginning of thelong journey to self-help for me.It gave me hope and understandinginstead of telling me to "cope".

3-0 out of 5 stars Good for info - Not for Relief
I had great expectations for this book. Not too many books include a step by step program for a road to recovery.Unfortunately, despite the title, this book does not provide one either. It lists steps, but they are moreinformative than an actual road to recovery. So I was very disappointed. The book is, however, an excellent reference for someone who has recentlybeen diagnosed with IBS or for family/friends of an individual with IBSthat wants to get a better understanding of the disorder.

5-0 out of 5 stars IBS - Finally makes sense!
After suffering for more than 20 years with IBS and going to every gastroenterologist I could find with no good results, this book is the only one that has made sense of this whole thing. Finally, someone knowsexactly how I've been feeling and what to do about it.The suggestions inthe book were a great help in my battle with IBS.He was compassionate anddiscrete, explaining symptoms and diagnosis in a way that my other doctorsnever did.Thank you Dr. Salt.I can't wait to read other books.I'veordered another one today and can't wait for it to get here.I wouldrecommend this book to others suffering with IBS, fibromyalgia and otherrelated disorders. ... Book Description
IBS Chat: Real Life Stories and Solutions is a compilation of the best postings by members of the Internet-based Irritable Bowel Syndrome Self Help and Support Group, www.ibsgroup.org. In an organized and easily accessible manner, authors Jeffrey D. Roberts, M.S.Ed., a lifelong IBS sufferer, and Barbara Bradley Bolen, Ph.D., present practical strategies for managing symptoms, information about a wide variety of treatment options, and insight into the effect that this devastating disorder can have on a person's life. Most importantly, you'll find reassurance that IBS is a treatable medical condition.

"Jeffrey Roberts and Dr. Barbara Bolen have done a remarkable job of compiling key comments, from all over the world, about IBS and the functional GI disorders. The information is well-organized, readable, and informative. I believe this book also helps to provide emotional support: the reader learns that he or she is "not alone" during those times when the symptoms are distressing or difficult to manage."

"This book provides very valuable insights from IBS sufferers that would be informative to other affected individuals and health care providers. I was most impressed by the communication between participants, who ranged from those wanting a better understanding about IBS and their symptoms, to those from very knowledgeable individuals. This level of social support between IBS sufferers can be very helpful in managing the symptoms of IBS."

Although I am still on my search for a cure -- not just treating the symptoms, this book reminded me that I'm not alone. It also re-enforces the need to get to the heart and cause of this curse.Twenty percent of the total population is entirely too many souls to ignore.
