Product Description
Irritable Bowel Syndrome is one of the most common reasons for a visit to the doctor in the United States, Europe, and other parts of the Western world.Even so, the majority of patients who have IBS do not seek medical care, which may be because of fear, embarrassment, or the lack of effective treatments. IBS affects both genders and all races. Recent data shows that 14 to 24 percent of women and 5 to 19 percent of men in the United States and Great Britain have IBS.

If you have IBS, you are undoubtedly familiar with the link between your condition, your comfort, and what you eat or drink. Elaine Magee gives you positive advice about what foods you should eat almost every day, and whether you suffer from IBS constipation, IBS diarrhea predominant, or the type of IBS that includes both conditions. Easy-to-use tables list what foods are good for diarrhea, and for constipation, and which foods cause bloating or gastrointestinal distress.

This new edition of Tell Me What to Eat If I Have Irritable Bowel Syndrome contains an updated review of all the possible causes of IBS, including hormones and certain medications. It also includes nuggets of wisdom from Dr. Christine Frissora, MD, associate professor of gastroenterology at New York Presbyterian Hospital. Also included are practical tips such as "The 5 Quickest Ways to 25 Grams of Fiber;" dozens of healthful, mouth-watering recipes; and practical supermarket and "eating out" advice from someone who has suffered from IBS for more than 20 years--the author. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Lifesaver!!Lifechanging!!!
When no other doctor could figure out my IBS problems Dr. Christine Frissora was the genius who helped me overcome my IBS illness. For about 2 years I was battling GI issues that had me bed ridden for 2 months and out of work for 6 months. You can imagine my struggles throughout the year.To put it modestly, my life was taken away.2 year prior I was extremely active playing every sport you can imagine 7 days a week. Then at age 26 I was hindered, handicapped and hampered by something over 50 doctors could not figure out.I am now 28. This book helped my way back to normalizing my digestive system.Within 2 weeks you will notice a difference. The right diet is crucial to healing your GI track. Many health professionals generalize on diet, but you truly need to be specific. This book helps differentiate for example fiber foods that would ease your digestive system.Buy this book and you won't regret it.IBS is a disease that is more life altering than heart disease, but because it is not immediately life threatening therefore IBS traditionally was not researched to its full potential.Dr. Frissora and her body of work helps to find new ways of coping with IBS symptoms.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful!
It would not be an exaggeration to say that this book changed my life....let me explain. I have been diagnosed with IBS-D, at first it was a relief to finally have a name for it. But, I soon realized that despite having a name there was little to nothing that would help or make it go away. The standard lines I would hear from MANY doctors - "eat more fiber" "reduce your stress". I was really frustrated, worn out and thought that I would have to live with this chronic pain and discomfort for the remainder of my life.
For the first time (in a very long time) I had hope after reading this book. So much in fact that I went to Seattle to meet with Dr. Wangen. I went though some of the allergy testing and the results were amazing - allergic to Dairy and egg whites were the biggies. Since then I have removed these and other items from my diet and have definitely noticed a big difference.
If you have IBS-D or C and are frustrated with doctors telling you there is nothing they can do for you (except prescribe antidepressants, take Fibercon, and stress less) I would recommend reading the book. If for nothing else, to realize that you can get relief from IBS and start living your life again.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you have IBS or IBS-like symptoms, this is a must read!
This is a great book that is full of useful information about IBS and its treatment. I am so grateful to have found it and Dr. Wangen.

Ignore any naysayers who say the book is little more than an advertisement for the IBS Treatment Center. They're just cynical. I went to the center before I read the book and still found the book to be a very valuable resource.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very useful, important for those suffering from this disorder
I bought a couple of books on this disorder which no doctor diagnosed. But I got this for my wife, after someone suggested that she has this disorder. She those it was a lifesaver.

5-0 out of 5 stars I cannot thank Wangen enough!
Well, yes it was kind of an advertisement for me.I was searching for doctors to diagnose what the hell was wrong with me.I was suffering from depression, IBS, arthritis, CFS, headaches, and muscle pain.My rheumatologist told me I was nuts.My gastroenterologist said I had IBS and to live with it.

The book read well, and I thought...Hmmm... One of the causes of all this is in the book.I think it may be an infestation of yeast.I should go fly to see Wangen.

He ran a bunch of tests and found out it was all true and plus I found out that I was also having allergic reactions to sugar cane and yeast.

The book, his clinic and his prescriptions has stopped my depression, my muscle pain, my head aches, and my chronic fatigue syndrome.Thank you Dr. Wangen.

And could I say that he is a pretty humble guy.Even his secretary was very nice, professional and things were in order. They even took a photo of me while at the office. The secretary said, "wangen wants to identify all his patients faces when he reviews their files and talks to them on the phone."He is pretty unassuming. He comes across like a curious kid who thinks you might have an important insight, not some guru-jerk like the other doctors that don't have a reputation.I was surprised.

It must been like $3,000, but money that I could afford to spend.

Wangen saved me years of torment. Wangen you rock.

I get gas more than most, but guess what?

NO MORE IBS! HAHAHAHAHAHAHA

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Available
This is the most comprehensive yet systematic, accessible, and intelligent book I've read on IBS (I had read 7-8 others before finding this one). You can waste much time and money on all sorts of herbal and medicinal products as well as alternative therapies with absolutely no gain--in fact, in many cases you may decide you feel worse.

Salt and Neimark provide a complete analysis of the mind/body/spirit connection, taking you from the causes of your problem to the resolution of it that only knowledge and action can provide.Their approach employs all of the latest research in mainstream medicine as well as some bold and positive understandings that are unliikely to appear in the conventional literature.

The only slight "negative" may be many of the illustrations, which are frankly insipid and unilluminating. On the other hand, they do provide some "breathing space" for the reader, possibly providing the text with a lighter tone and feel.

5-0 out of 5 stars Collaboratively written by digestive disorder specialists
Collaboratively written by digestive disorder specialists Dr. William Salt and Dr. Neil Neimark, and now available in a fully revised and updated new edition, Irritable Bowel Syndrome And The MindBodySpirit Connection is an invaluable, hope-giving, practical, non-specialist general reader friendly guide offering seven specific steps to improving one's quality of life and health when living with a functional bowel disorder, Crohn's Disease or colitis. 1-0 out of 5 stars not as good as others
This book is a series of questions and answers. It did not give me a plan of attack to feel better.I preferred the book "Irritable Bowel Solutions" by John Hunter because it covers different types of IBS, diet and fiber. Some types of IBS are not helped by increasing fiber intake unless you use the correct type of fiber that does not ferment.I also liked "What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About IBS" by Richard Ash.It explains exercises to do and supplements to take.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Informative & Easy To Read book
I found this book to be most helpful with discussing the causes, treatments, and the future of IBS.It is easy to read and I really liked the question and answer format because I asked alot of those same questions myself. This book has definitely helped me to understand more about IBS and ways that I can deal with it.WORTH THE READ!!

This book helped me understand after many years what my real problem is - IBS. It gave me wonderful advice on what to eat, how to eat and in what quantities. It's also helped me to not feel different and ashamed. I've had IBS since I was a child and never really knew what was going on. Now I can control the problem almost 100 % of the time. When I do have have an attack it is not as severe and they are not nearly as frequent. I would recommend this book to anyone suffering with IBS. I gave it 5 stars. Wish I could give it more but that's all they allow.

5-0 out of 5 stars Deserves a place in any health or general collection!
The Whole-Food Guide to Overcoming Irritable Bowel Syndrome offers a blend of recipes and health tips for eating well with a digestive disorder. From natural relief for constipation and diarrhea to a greens recipe for those who hate leafy greens, this is packed with plenty of practical ideas blending nutrition and appealing dishes, and deserves a place in any health or general collection!

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical Step by Step Guide to Overcoming Digestive Distress
Digestive distress is rampant as we all steep in a post-modern toxic stew of environmental effluvia. If you, as I did, go to a gastroenterologist and are told "learn to live with the pain," Knoff's guide offers practical options for restoring your gut.A well-respected nutrition educator with a background in biochemistry, Knoff knows her stuff. The publication of her book is a great occasion, as digestive malfunction sufferers have typically had to piece much of what is covered here together (if they can) on their own.

Although a short book, The Whole Food Guide to Overcoming Irritable Bowel Syndrome: Strategies & Recipes for Eating Well with IBS, Indigestion & Other Digestive Disorders is jam packed with information and resources proven effective in reversing these debilitating disorders. For example, many health educators talk about "rotation diets" and lots of authors describe them in their books.Knoff, however, took the time to create simple-to-use, visual charts that clearly step sufferers through a rotation and challenge diet -- which is the first critical step an individual needs to take if s/he hopes to solve the mystery of the actual foods that trigger his or her specific digestive dysfunction. These charts alone are worth the price of the book.

In addition, Knoff provides background information and history, offers detailed analysis of how and why one's gut function may become compromised, and hands you recipes from soup to (soaked) nuts that will reinstate your interest in food while helping you to remove the foods that offend your body. This book can empower you to understand your affliction and guide you - or your loved one - back to full joy in eating and in life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Readable and Well Researched!
This book is addressed towards those dealing with Irritable Bowel Syndrome, but it would be of benefit to anyone who has digestive issues such as constipation, heartburn, diarrhea or a simply undiagnosed case of tummy troubles. It is clear, readable, has straightforward recommendations and tasty recipes.I will be sharing it widely with my network of healthcare colleagues and friends.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Reference Book For Any Digestive issues
This book is not just for people who have IBS but anyone who has some digestive issues, and most of us have some things that are not working well in the way we are digesting and metabolizing the food we eat.Even someone with a healthy gut can learn more how to optimize and select foods that are healthy and nutritious. The chapter "Back to Basics" is packed with information on proteins, fats and oils, carbohydrates, and more... There is a very thorough self-assessment questionnaire to see how well your digestion is working (or not). Then the rest of this well-researched book really guides you toward improving your digestive health with delicious recipes. The chapter on "What To Eat?" gives you some sample meals and four-day rotation planning, tips for eating out, etc.And the amazingly good recipes that are carefully created to help people with IBS are easy and delicious. There is a very generous variety of recipes for breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, and even desserts. They include fruit and green smoothies, yummy soups, and entrees that include fish, turkey, chicken and beef.My favorites are: Chia Fresca in the morning, breakfast patties, Laura's Fantastic Greens, Thai Chicken soup, Mineral-Rich bone broth, and so many more.Very easy, yummy and good for the tummy!I am recommending this book to many friends and family.Get it for yourself first! ... Product Description
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is the most common functional gastrointestinal disorder, causing pain, discomfort, and embarrassment to millions. While medically based treatments have demonstrated only limited effectiveness, recent research strongly supports the role of psychosocial factors in both symptom expression and symptom control. This book presents a brief cognitive-behavioral treatment approach that is suitable for use with individuals or groups. Delineating a clear medical rationale, the authors help clinicians both to reduce the stigma associated with IBS and to overcome client resistance to psychological treatment. Effective techniques are outlined for helping clients manage anxiety, anger, and shame; enhance their self-efficacy and stress management skills; and alleviate gastrointestinal distress. Session-by-session guidelines are illuminated by such useful features as sample therapist-client dialogues, lists of important points to cover, troubleshooting tips, and examples of recommended handouts and forms. Also covered in depth are treatment issues specific to women.

4-0 out of 5 stars Cognitive-Behavioral Treatment of Irritable Bowel Syndrome
Good book on using CBT for the treatment of IBS.

The Good: The book contains several chapters on IBS and the CBT conceptualisation of IBS. The IBS "patient themes" that Toner and her colleagues have identified as being personality characteristics that are typical of IBS patients are excellent and are necessary topics to cover/ work on in therapy. The chapters detailing the treatment sessions are informative and provide a brief guide on what to do during the particular session. Scripts for the therapist are also provided in some chapters, which help therapists grasp how to explain things to the client, such as the CBT explanation for IBS symptoms.

What Could Be Improved: Initially, I thought the book would contain detailed, step-by-step information pertaining to how to conduct each therapy session. This is not the case. Unfortunately, only a brief amount of information is provided and the session topics are only covered in point-form. A typical set of session instructions include things like "cover this topic in detail before moving on to the next topic"-- hence at times no real direction is provided. Also, Toner and her colleagues tend to refer to other resources for strategies that are central to their own treatment program. For example, although relaxation training is a central feature of the treatment, the authors refer to another source for the relaxation exercise, leaving the reader to try to locate that source as it is not contained in the book. The book is also quite short for a treatment manual. The authors say nothing about what to do should problems arise or if the treatment does not seem to be working.

I would recommend this book to all therapists who work with individuals with IBS or other psychosomatic/ health anxiety concerns as it does a good job at presenting the CBT conceptualisation of such problems.

5-0 out of 5 stars Effective, user-friendly program for IBS
While this book is written for practitioners, it provides information and insight which can be useful for the sufferer of irritable bowl syndrome (IBS) as well. This may be especially true for many of the over 20 million individuals in the US alone who suffer from social anxiety disorder - a fear ofbeing negatively evaluated and humiliated in social situations -who suffer from this painful and embarrassing disorder as well.

Given that the diseased-based biomedical model can't adequately account for these gastrointestinal symptoms and their psychological effects, it is gratifying to see an empirically-supported cognitive-behavioral treatment for IBS which is effective.

In addition to its gender and social context issues, its comprehensive set of treatment recommendations includes emphasis on coping with shame, anger, assertiveness, self-efficacy, social approval, perfectionism, control, self-nuturance, and performance anxiety. To assist the therapist in facilitating the client's learning, the book also includes recommendations, troubleshooting guides, common problems and myths, case histories, scripts, and client-therapist dialogues.

This is an excellent volume on a condition which heretofore has received little attention.

4-0 out of 5 stars Cognitive Behavior Therapy for Irritable Bowel Syndrome
Written by Brenda Toner and her colleagues, who have worked extensively on psychosocial aspects of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), this manual provides a thorough, yet accessible, introduction to the currentunderstanding of IBS and cognitive behavioural approaches to its treatment.

One of the particularly interesting aspects of the book is theattention paid to gender socialisation and social stigma as factors whichmay help to explain both the high proportion of female IBS outpatients andsome of the central concerns of the patient group. After summarisingcurrent research into the biological, psychological and social factors thatcontribute to the disorder the second half of the book outlines thecognitive behavioural therapy program developed and implemented by theToronto group. A detailed outline of session themes and session contentis included. Case studies and sample scripts are used throughout makingthis book clear and interesting to read.

Beyond its use as a manual toguide health care professionals in the management and treatment of patientswith IBS, this book provides a great insight into the nature of thedisorder and the impact it has on patient's psychological state and day today lives. ... Read more

Product Description
If you are one of the millions of people suffering from IBS, immediate help is finally at hand. Contrary to what many believe, eating for IBS does not mean deprivation, never going to restaurants, boring food, or a limited and therefore unhealthy diet. It does mean learning to eat safely by realizing how different foods physically affect the GI tract, and how these foods can prevent or trigger IBS. For example:

* There are two kinds of fiber...one soothes the colon but the other can cause severe attacks

* Dairy is a common trigger...even in people who are not lactose intolerant

* Peppermint, chamomile, and fennel can prevent attacks better than some prescription drugs

* Bland foods are not automatically safe foods

My Mother-in-Law was advised to buy this book by her doctor so she could learn how to eat properly for her condition and get to feeling better. She had planned to buy it at a local bookstore for much more than I found it for her on Amazon.com. 4-0 out of 5 stars Provides some sound advice for taking control of your health
This is the second edition of the same named book first published in 1999. The book seems to be written primarily from a dietitian's and psychologist's perspective so there are at times what I consider murky medical advice given, such as Healthy Eating and the concept of MyPyramid. The concept is that if you "stick" to your diet then you will be in control of your symptoms. I only wish! There are some good insights as to how powerful cognitive restructuring can be. One statement that made the book for me was "We recently did a study of the pain experienced by IBS sufferers versus Crohn's sufferers. We found that the pain of those with IBS was every bit as severe as the pain experienced by those with Crohn's disease. The difference between the two groups is: social support. Crohn's disease has more social support". This tells the authors and the readers that suffering with IBS can actually be greater than Crohn's because of the lack of support. To this end, the book does offer some valuable advice to talking to your doctor and learning to take control of your own health. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I wish I had found this book a long time ago.
I've had IBS for several years, and have never really gotten a good grasp on it.This book helped me to do that.I felt like there are people out there who are dealing with the same thing I am, and there are stories included in the book that I totally related to.It made me feel so much better and not so alone in this condition.

2-0 out of 5 stars Another worthless book...
I agree its useless; just like so many IBS books. There a million of IBS books out there everyone with their opinion on how to treat IBS.I bought this book and Eating for IBS.I followed the suggestions and got no relief. They are now recycled paper.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to Understand. Worth Having!
I really enjoyed this book because she makes everything very understandable. She also discusses the possible links between IBS and childhood abuse, stress, foods that irritate, etc. She states that studies have shown a link between depression (or stress related disorders) and IBS. She also gives practical advice on how to cope both mentally and physically. Some suggestions may be things you have heard before, but she puts it in such a way so you can really see the benefit of doing these, that outwieghs the inconvenience. A good example is the food diary. Who wants to be bothered with doing that. I didn't...so I never have. But she makes goods points as to why you should take a few weeks out of your life to do something that would likely save you months or years of dealing with the symptoms and pains because you didn't do it.
The read is light and interesting, unlike medical books tend to be. It was helpful to me, a sufferer of IBS as well as Chron's Disease.

2-0 out of 5 stars useless
I have suffered with IBS for many years. This book offered simplistic advice that any reasonable person would have tried already, such as visualization. Save your money, do not buy this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Last IBS Book You Need!
After buying, reading and giving away many, many books on Irritable Bowel Syndrome, I was blessed to have found this one. No recipes in this one, this book makes clear the powerful correlation between IBS and anxiety, IBS and stress, IBS and depression, IBS and fear. After spending a week of increasingly severe pain accompanied by increased anxiety about the pain (or was it increasing pain about the anxiety?)and winding up in the local ER, I realized that I needed to help myself by calming myself. This book tells how. In compassionate, orderly chapters, Barbara Bolen teaches how to truly "break the bonds of IBS." Hooray for her! Hooray for all of us! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars psychological BS
I ordered this book with high hopes and was very disappointed. It was very 'deep' and psychlogical. It was hard to follow and really put me off.I was recently diagnosed with IBS and I got no help from this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Good information, but bad book.
This book contained some very useful and helpful information regarding IBS. However, the organization of the information was horrible. He mentions things without explaining them. Then later in the book he explains them, but there is no way to connect the two chapters until you have read them. He reiterates himself to no end and on trivial matters. It is not a good book to read and doesn't focus on IBS as the title might lead one to think.

4-0 out of 5 stars good info with a touch of spirituality
Being a person who went to the doctor and was handed a pamphlet on Metamucil, and told to `cope because there is no cure for IBS'....this book was a HUGE HELP!There is a lot of basic info, but also some solid advicewith strong references to other experts.I loved the way it put my mind atease regarding so many of my symptoms. This book is the beginning of thelong journey to self-help for me.It gave me hope and understandinginstead of telling me to "cope".

3-0 out of 5 stars Good for info - Not for Relief
I had great expectations for this book. Not too many books include a step by step program for a road to recovery.Unfortunately, despite the title, this book does not provide one either. It lists steps, but they are moreinformative than an actual road to recovery. So I was very disappointed. The book is, however, an excellent reference for someone who has recentlybeen diagnosed with IBS or for family/friends of an individual with IBSthat wants to get a better understanding of the disorder.

5-0 out of 5 stars IBS - Finally makes sense!
After suffering for more than 20 years with IBS and going to every gastroenterologist I could find with no good results, this book is the only one that has made sense of this whole thing. Finally, someone knowsexactly how I've been feeling and what to do about it.The suggestions inthe book were a great help in my battle with IBS.He was compassionate anddiscrete, explaining symptoms and diagnosis in a way that my other doctorsnever did.Thank you Dr. Salt.I can't wait to read other books.I'veordered another one today and can't wait for it to get here.I wouldrecommend this book to others suffering with IBS, fibromyalgia and otherrelated disorders. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Does not work!!!11!11!!
The claims in this book are false. If you grind up a Bible and consume it in pill form, it will NOT cure your IBS.Maybe I was confused because I only read the title and not the actual book, but my results have been just terrible.I have spent over $300 on KJV Bibles, condemned myself to eternal hellfire for blasphemy, and I STILL have irritable bowels.

When I get some more money, I intend to try it again with New International Version Bibles, because I hope this will be more effective.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank GOD, literally.
My God, Dr. Colbert just keeps getting better and better with this series. First it was yeasty problems in females, then it was curing autoimmune problems (go figure), and now we suspect we'll get a Biblical cure of herpes out next. When I found this IBS book, I knew I had come across a true gem.Presumably this for those people who have NOT yet found Dr. Colbert's other books about what Jesus would eat and how he would cook it.Because, surely, if you are eating what Jesus would eat and cooking it how he would cook it, you would not be plagued by such problems.Unless of course your name were Job or there was some secret bet God had going on with Lucifer, but I suspect you'd begin having other signs to go along with your IBS problems.

Anyway, this is truly an answer among answers and it's good to know the Bible is so versatile, and that Dr. Colbert is leading the way in outlining it for us.Thank you so much Dr. Colbert, and thank you God, Jesus, Mary, and the rest of the gang, for helping rid myself of this truly messy (and not to mention stinky, and embarrassing) problem.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic
For many years I suffered the agonizing pain that accompanies IBS.Little did I know that the answers to all my problems could be found within the "Good Book" that had been on my bookshelf since I was a child.Although I had read the Bible from cover to cover, it wasn't until I picked up Dr. Colbert's miriculous journal that I realized Jesus wasn't too busy healing cripples and raising from the dead to concern himself with curing explosive diarrhea as well.Taken directly from the pages of the four gospels, as well as the newly discovered Gospel According to Bucky, this book is a must have for anyone who has ever crapped their pants before making it to the John. ... This book is great. It gives you a plan to follow to determine what is causing your IBS.It has a questionnaire to help you determine what type of IBS you have.Until I read this book, I did not know that there were different types of IBS.Most books tell you to add more fiber to your diet. This book addresses what to do if more fiber makes your symptoms worse. It recommends linseed (which is flax seed) as a bulking agent that does not ferment in your digestive track.Taking flax seed in juice has greatly helped my symptoms. It also explains how to do an exclusion diet to see if you have food intolerances and what foods to avoid to reduce gas and bloating. All of this is backed up by research at Professor Hunter's clinic in Cambridge, England. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Irritable Bowel and Gastrointestinal Solutions Handbook
Hi,
I just read this book and was favorably surprised. The negative reviews in here do not seem to be accurate. For example, one review says that only 15% of the book dealt with IBS.This is NOT true.2/3 of the book discusses IBS directly and the rest helps distinguish between other diseases and IBS.This is exactly what is in the title.
I called the company with a question. They were very helpful and knowledgeable.Their web site is www.urpublishers.com and the phone number is on the front page.I think they are under new ownership and may explain why my experience was so good.
This book may be basic in some ways, but it certainly is accurate. It is an excellent primer on the subject and deserves strong consideration. It gave my daughter three new treatments to try.Two of the treatments really helped. That is what we wanted.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Irritable Bowel Synfrome Handbook

Check out the section on fiber, it will surprise you.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Good Beginning
My 21-year-old son has IBS so badly he had to come home mid-semester to be helped by us.He was in a bad way.We got him tested and he doesn't have celiac sprue, etc.He was diagnosed with IBS when he was 18, but has resisted the idea of changing his diet or ways of dealing with stress. Now he knows he has to, but it's all very overwhelming for him, especially since he's been so sick, and his college situation makes dealing with it difficult.I needed a book to give to him that was clear, supportive, and broke down what he needed to do into simple steps.I ordered eight different books about IBS from Amazon and gave them all a quick read. This is the only one I gave to my son. He's back at college now after having dropped several classes. He's starting to read this book and says it's very helpful.I am so grateful to have sent him back with a book I think will help him and that covers the whole process of trying to manage his disease.

What other reviewers have said about recommending wheat products as a bad idea may be true, but we've had our son tested and it is not a problem for him.Mainly he needs to eat smaller, more frequent meals, eat more soluble fiber and healthier foods, and deal with stress in a better way. This book covers these very clearly.Since he tends to ignore my advice having this said by this book and his doctors might eventually get through to him.I also got him a book on Cognitive Behavior Therapy that he says is helping, too.

5-0 out of 5 stars glance first before buying ANY book on a disorder
As any medical professional knows, no illness is categorized by symptoms XYZ alone. There are always variations and this book adjusts to them quite well.I am sorry that previous reviewers didn't glance through the book first and pay attnetion to their own bodies and what works for them.

This books is also wonderful in that it doesn't lable IBS as being "all in your head".It is very objective in describing the many factors that may be causing your IB symptoms.Things like stress, food, fiber, and possible other food triggers.

This book is also short, and doesn't go into a list of supplements you should be taking. It focuses on how to best help yourself, rather than telling you to do #1, #2, or #3, as every body is slightly different. It helps you focus on your symptoms, and what may help to alleviate them.

It is important to understand that IBS in THIS country is often related to the Type A lifestyle, and often times modifing this (by reducing stress, focusing on quality of food choices) often helps. However, things like lactose intolerance and celiac sprue are SEPERATE. You may be lactose intolerant, and by eliminating lactose from your diet you will be fine. However, that may not be a problem for every person suffering from IBS. Same thing with celiac sprue--just because you have IBS does not mean you have celiac sprue. It's VERY important to be honest with your symptoms and treat yourself accordingly.

As a medical professional I believe in western medicine, but I also believe that people need to take responsibility for helping themselves. There is no magic pill or magic cure for everything.Sometimes you have to be patient and go through a little trial and error. This book will help you do just that, but will also help you recognize when you need to revise what you are doing and seek medical attention.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helped Me Out
Well, who doesn't love sitting down and writing a review about a book that tries to make your butt work better . . . anyway, despite the disclaimers about published medical advice regarding this book it helped me out a good deal and out of gratitude I can't help but give it anything less than 5 stars.

After spending several thousand dollars over several years to buy the pleasure of having doctors tell me "I don't know, I think we should do more tests" I frankly gave up on the medical establishment's ability to handle IBS cases. (I don't know if they are afraid of lawsuits or what, but none of the doctors I saw offered any useful advice or even tried a therapy or suggested a special diet or anything. Several friends and family members have reported the exact same pattern in modern medicine for IBS and other symptoms, thousands of dollars spent on inconclusive tests with no medical advice or relief. What's going on?? Doesn't eleventy years of supposedly the most stressful schooling in the world equip doctors with any knowledge beyond telling you that some scribbles in some boxes on test results mean absolutely nothing?)

This book does not offer a cure, as there is none for IBS yet apparently. However it tells you how to minimize symptoms in a holistic manner, and for me this actually worked quite well. Fiverelatively major changes that were included in this book worked for my particular case:

1.) Reduction of stress and balancing my life. This was harder than most people would probably like since for me it involved switching jobs, moving, and temporarily dipping into retirement savings, but quality of life has improved significantly and IBS symptoms reduced commensurately.

2.) Avoiding trigger foods, especially fatty foods, gassy foods, lactose containing foods, and spices. (Sadly, no more Thai and Mexican food, no more ice cream, no more lots of foods but it's worth it.)

3.) Increasing fiber intake. For me whole weat bread does upset my stomach, but a big bowl of Grape-Nuts with Soy Milk every day seems to get the job done.

4.) Eating three regular meals a day. Sometimes hard, especially when my normal response to having particularly bad IBS symptoms was to forgo eating, but this book explains the physiological science as to why this actually makes symptoms worse.

5.) Making exercise a regular habit. I finally feel healthy again.

A lot of this sounds like common-sense stuff, but this book explained why they would work (with other possible strategies for people with different symptoms) and helped me find which foods I could and could not tolerate. With this knowledge I was more committed to seeing the life changes through and with time they improved my condition more than I thought they would.

The sections on how to relax your muscles and your mind through breathing, little physical exercises, and mental techniques are also very helpful.

Since everyone's different I can't promise this book will help you. But with some experimentation this book drastically increased the speed and effectiveness of the lifestyle changes necessary to keep my IBS under control.

1-0 out of 5 stars SORRY THAT IPURCHASED THIS BOOK
I have bought Heather Van Vorous' books regarding IBS -- They are fantastic and I thought that buying THIS book would give additional help! The book is virtually useless. . . The biggest negative about this book was the advice on loading up on wheat fiber --which can cause horrible reactions in IBS patients! In addition, this team could not have researched the reaction of people with IBS to dairy products -- including yogurt -- Be smart and buy Heather Van Vorous' books -- they are simply wonderful and will help manage this condition!

5-0 out of 5 stars Regarding Science-Ejected Vitalism, 2002:
Vitalism is a profoundly science-ejected concept, though many CAM or 'natural health' cabals falsely claim that vitalism survives scientific scrutiny.

This book is a prime example of naturopathy's vitalism [aka "vis medicatrix naturae"].

5-0 out of 5 stars Inflamatory Bowel Disease-Food Solutions
The book provides classic symptoms for inflammatory bowel
disease; such as, feeling of fullness, irritable bladder,
headache, fatigue and fibromyalgia. The authors distinguish
between mechanical digestion and chemical digestion which
is the enzyme breakdown of food in the body. IBS happens when
the muscular activity or motility is altered. Contraction
either speeds up or slows down food movements through the
digestive tract. John Hopkins University found that 6 - 8
peristaltic contractions were the ideal; whereas, IBS patients
can have as few as "0" contractions and as many as 25.
A slowdown of food movements can lead to putrification of
the food, fermentation and bacterial overgrowth. Classic
triggers of this condition are dairy, insufficient fiber,
excessive smoking, stress and certain types of drugs.
The challenge for the patient is to diarize the food each
day and the adverse reactions as a condition precedent to
managing this disease. A related work by Hamlyn recommends
the evaluation of stool samples for parasitic infection and
the sigmoidoscopy or colonoscopy. Loperamide may be utilized to
reduce bowel contractions and Mebeverine is an anti-spasm
drug. Ispaghula husk may be used as a bulking agent to harden
stool prior to elimination. Peppermint oil classically relaxes
gut muscles. Hamlyn's work recommends that IBS patients
reduce sugary foods, reduce or eliminate smoking, increase
omega 3 oils and decrease milk consumption. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars I've never been so excited about iritable bowel syndrome!
Not since the phlegm-horking "Afrikaaner for beginners" audio book have I been so impressed by an author's knowledge of a subject.

The only caveat is that it is not nearly as visual as you may want if you are a fetishist, hence the 4/5 score.Otherwise, spellbinding! ... Read more
