Product Description

People with irritable bowel syndrome have chronic abdominal pain and discomfort, bloating, and disordered bowel habits. Understandably, they worry about their symptoms and how their lives are disrupted by IBS. And they are often frustrated because they cannot control their symptoms with dietary changes or over-the-counter medications. The contradictory advice they receive from friends and health care professionals only adds to their concerns.

As a gastroenterologist, Dr. Brian E. Lacy is well aware of the concerns and frustrations that surround IBS. He has written this compassionate and readable book to explain all aspects of the disorder -- from causes to symptoms, from diagnosis to treatment -- for everyone who struggles with irritable bowel syndrome.

In Making Sense of IBS, Dr. Lacy addresses the questions people most frequently ask, including how IBS develops, how it is diagnosed, how to distinguish symptoms of IBS from symptoms of other medical disorders, how the symptoms are affected by stress, the effectiveness of alternative and complementary therapies, available prescription medications, and whether IBS is hereditary. He provides tips on preparing for an office visit with a health care provider, a list of patient-based resources, a glossary of medical terms, and profiles of patients seeking -- and finding -- solutions.

A complete guide for people with IBS and their families, this is an essential tool for understanding and living with this common and sometimes debilitating disorder.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
Has some information about stomach problems but impractical advice. The massage and hand techniques are all about touching your feet. The other information is about taking alot of herbs and just putting alot of stuff into your body. I was very disappointed in the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Easy to follow and good advice
Book is very easy to understand and follow.Has good suggestions on how to stop having disgestive problems and how to get your digestive system back on track.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tons of great info. on digestion and health
I'm about half way through this book.
It is filled with lots and lots of information
on digestion and health, in general.
Many great ideas for how to change diet and
lifestyle to create better health, starting
in the gut.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource, but questions remain
I thought the angels had answered my prayers when I saw this book at my local pharmacy. It is packed absolutely chock full with great, easy to understand information about digestion, the mind-gut connection, and various digestive diseases. I know "natural medicine" seems crunchy granola and therefore easy to dismiss, but logic (and many well-designed studies) make many of the recommendations in this book hard to refute, and definitely worth trying. As someone who has been to dozens of traditional doctors and has still not found relief for my gut, being given more information and options for treating these distressing problems is a godsend and not to be sneezed at. However, after reading it cover-to-cover, I still have questions.
My main issue: I have symptoms of several of the problems talked about in the book, and unfortunately the treatments for these problems are often contradictory. I really should eat more yogurt and other cultured products for the beneficial flora--unless I have candidiasis or a food allergy. I should eat whole grains for the fiber--unless I'm allergic or have candidiasis. I should drink water right before I go to bed--unless I have reflux. The list goes on and on. I have NO IDEA which of my stomach problems I should tackle first and which things I can try for one problem that won't significantly worsen another problem. I find I'm so confused that I really want to visit the clinic that Ms. Berkson talks about working at, but she gives no contact info in the book and I was unable to find anything online. Barring that, I would have really appreciated some information for how to FIND a clinic like that one, or a doctor who will work with me to find holistic and natural remedies.
Having said that, I still think this book is an excellent resource that is well-written, well-organized, and well worth reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent health information
One of the most helpful, informative books I have read. The suggestions really work.Highly recommend as an aid in healing. ... Read more

Product Description
Understanding Irritable Bowel Syndrome is the first step to beating it.

One in six people suffer from IBS, with pain, bloating, constipation and diarrhoea, often accompanied by other, similar symptoms. Although very common, doctors have been unable to find an organic cause, which can make some people feel they must be imagining it.

Simon Darnley and Barbara Millar have written this guide for sufferers and anyone who wants to know more about this unpleasant and embarrassing condition. They provide a balanced overview of the different explanations available and the range of treatments to be found, from special diets and cutting out certain foods, to drugs and alternative therapies.

Packed with the stories of real people, and full of practical advice and sources of useful information, Understanding Irritable Bowel Syndrome shows you that although there are no miracle cures, IBS doesn't have to ruin your life. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars CBT doesn't change organic disease
Like many other people, the author is confused about this organic gaestrointestinal disorder.

Although the "psychosocial" idea that the mind and the body cannot be separated is trendy, and accurate in some areas, organic medical diseases for which biomedical research shows why patients have the symptoms they do is completely unrelated.Symptoms aren't medically unexplained just because some psychiatrists and doctors don'tlike "reductionist" or traditional medicine explanations.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), although effective in helping most people cope better, was never designed as a treatment or cure for organic medical diseases.

Changing your attitude or beliefs can do wonders for just about anyone, including psychiatrists and psychologists, but it can't even cure acne, much less pain or neurological disorders.

If you have ME/CFS then you may not have IBS at all. Harvard researchers have objectively proven that nearly all people with this neuroimmune disorder have autonomic deregulation. One of the most noticable symptoms of which is dizziness upon standing. However, constipation is also a common symptom of autonomic disorders such as POTS, Orthostatic Intolerance, NMH etc.

No matter what your medical illness, be sure you see a competent physician who keeps up with the biomedical research. Psychology is a great subspecialty, but unlike chocolate it isn't great with everything.

1-0 out of 5 stars WORST BOOK FOR IBS
This book was a complete waste of paper. It has no recipes to help with IBS sufferers. There are a lot of dairy recipes and most IBS sufferers are lactose intolerant! How is that supposed to help us. Also the recipes are very DULL!! I sent this book back the day I got it. It was a waste of my time!!

1-0 out of 5 stars No Help At All
This book was completely unhelpful. There were no detailed eating orcooking guidelines, and most of the recipes had large quantities ofingredients that are intolerable for people with ibs (red meat, cheese, eggyolks, etc.).The recipes were also very unappetizing.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not for the Lactose intolerant
I had high expectations of this book, but found that it didn't take intoconsideration that most IBS sufferers are lactose intolerant. Almost all ofthe recipies had cheese or milk products. Even for those who can toleratedairy products, the recipes are not very appealing.

3-0 out of 5 stars British food.

The powerful natural solution your doctor won't tell you about!

In The IBS Breakthrough, author Leigh Fortson helps you find the right practitioner and learn the basics of Chinese medicine-including nearly forgotten techniques from thousands of years ago. With veteran Chinese acupuncturist Bing Lee, Fortson explains how modern western medicine is wonderful for acute illness, but woefully inadequate at curing chronic problems like IBS.Chinese medicine, on the other hand, has centuries of success to back up its time-tested methods for treating chronic ailments.

*How to use Chinese medicine in conjunction with other alternative therapies for the best results

5-0 out of 5 stars Refreshing and empowering
Take Control : Insights into Irritable Bowel Syndrome is written by two well known experts who have been involved with helping IBS sufferers for years. Christine Dancey is the co-founder of the UK-based IBS Network and Dr. Claire Rutter first worked for Dancey as a research assistant for IBS before completing her PhD to further her research about IBS. The book they have written oozes with respect for the IBS sufferer and the determination that any sufferer can help themselves control much of their symptoms by using cognitive behavioral techniques to dismiss much of the negative beliefs and attitudes about themselves suffering from IBS. Both writers are very skilled at teaching you how you can control your own psychological profile. I highly recommend this book as a great start to taking back your life from IBS. ... Read more
