Product Description
In recent years functional gastrointestinal disorders have attracted much interest. These disorders are extremely common. They are characterized by symptoms and the lack of structural lesions that can be identified with clinically available routine diagnostic tests. Several functional abnormalities are now believed to play a role in the development of the symptoms. This book summarizes the presentations at the International Falk Symposium No. 99 `Functional Dyspepsia and Irritable Bowel Syndrome: Concepts and Controversies' that took place on May 27--28, 1997. This symposium brought together clinical and basic researchers and clinicians to improve interdisciplinary communication. The meeting comprehensively covered basic and clinical aspects of these disorders, and it not only summarized the current knowledge, but also identified scientific questions that need to be addressed in the future. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars information to help you solve your digestive problems
I found the book very helpful. I don't think there are easy answers to digestive problems because there are so many factors affecting each person at once. The author shows you how to keep a food journal (which my doctor has been telling me to do for years) which not only has columns for what you ate or drank, but also what else you were doing, who was with you, where you were and how you were feeling, because your digestive problems can be a combination of what you eat, how stressed out you are, how rushed you are, etc. I found a lot of useful information in the book, but it still comes down to the fact that you have to make the effort to find your personal digestive problems and solutions.

3-0 out of 5 stars A decent self-help book
It is great to find a book by a practicing gastroenterologist who promotes a medicine-free healing plan! Gitnick's book reminds us all of the importance of a complete healing program, including exercise, stress reduction, positive attitude, eating those foods which don't bother us, and seeking support from others. The author discusses scenarios when it may be necessary to combine medicine with these success factors and how they can work together to promote healing. This book contains many case studies and patient anecdotes, and is written in a positive, uplifting way. The book may draw criticism in that is does not dictate specific solutions or provide explicit answers; instead, it gives the reader information and tools (like a suggested food journal) which the reader can use to answer their own questions.

1-0 out of 5 stars It's Just a Lot of Hot Air!
Well intentioned but regrettably lacking in any real practical advise for those of us who suffer from this very dibilatating syndrome, "Freedom from Digestive Distress : Medicine-Free Relief from Heartburn, Gas, Bloating, and Irritable Bowel Syndrome" was a disappointing read. There is virtually no information on dealing with the embarrassing and often painful situations that are a part of our daily lives.I was looking for answers and got very few:What is the best approach for avoiding problems in a crowded movie theatre after a Mexican dinner? How does one excuse oneself from a staff meeting without arousing suspicions? What is the best way to avoid blame for unpleasant odors in an elevator or a car?How do I explain to my children that "Mommy's gas is involuntary"?How will they learn that passing wind at the dinner table is NOT a joke? These questions are left unanswered, and the reader is left feeling bloated. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars better help elsewhere
I tried for years to control IBS with diet, exercise, medications, etc.I never got anywhere with that.I recently tried an 'assist' from the 'Assist Processing Handbook' from L Ron Hubbard, and I was feeling much better within a couple of hours. If you have already ruled out food allergies (and any structural problems), and can't seem to control IBS with books such as this one, please do yourself a favor and get the assist book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Relief from Ibs: Irritable Bowel Syndrome
It has taken the doctors a long time to diagnose me for IBS. The doctors are not much help except for medication. This book gives you details of what a person goes through and ideas on how to control it or relief it. One of the main topics is stress.Stress causes a lot of the problems with IBS. This book gives you ways to cope with the stress and what you need to watch for in foods. I share the information in this book with many people that I meet who have IBS. I bought two books. The other book does not even begin to show you how to cope with IBS. I would recommend this book to anyone with digestive problems if for no reason except ways of coping with digestive problems.

2-0 out of 5 stars Easy reading with little substance
While this is an easy book to read, understand and even use in your quest to avoid the pain and symptoms of IBS there are several serious shortcomings. First, the author is a layman. She is not a doctor, does not treat IBS or practice any sort of health care. She is a writer. A good writer who draws from a variety of medical sources and credits them diligently, but still not a doctor or academic.

This is also a highly 'womanocentric' book. Of all the examples cited in the text I found ONE that was not a female. While woman are more likely to suffer from IBS than men in America this is still more of a 'womans book' and focuses at length on issues that do not concern the other gender at all. I will not, for instance, be experiencing any greater onset of symptoms during menstruation.

The author advocates adding fiber to the diet. This is sound advice supported by most, if not all doctors and nutritionists. While she mentions the difference between soluable and insoluable fiber she says "You needn't worry about which fiber is which..." (p.161) This couldn't be worse advice. Insoluable fiber causes many of the symptoms of IBS to worsen and is not recommended by any other sources I have found. Read other books on IBS, there are some great ones right here on Amazon, or check around the web where there are hundreds of resources for people with IBS. Nobody else recommends adding insoluable fiber to your diet, and most sources recommend eliminating it.

Finally, the bulk of the book does not concern IBS directly at all but is filled with 'holistic' approaches to all around wellness. This sounds nice but I'm not looking for a book on "Developing Coping Skills", "Exploring Biofeedback", "Learning Personal Relaxation Techniques", or "Talking to Yourself". these are all chapters in Ms. Shimberg's book. I have yet to find anyone else who links talking to myself with relief from a colon spasm.

You will find no list of potential food triggers, nor a discusion of meal planning or preparation. The author says that everyone is different so what triggers one person's symptoms is ok for another. While this may be true there are many food groups that most authorities agree are difficult to digest and should be avoided. Simply ducking the whole issue does not help me find reflief.

To summarize, this book offers no new information or research... it is by a layman. It offers a plethora of "New Age" treatments which have no proven benefits in treating IBS. And it actually has some outright bad advice in it. i.e. not worrying about which type of fiber you add to your diet.

If you are seeking an understanding of your pain and a strategy for relief, look elsewhere.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Good Overview of an Undercovered Subject
Thank goodness that at last there are many books available about IBS (orwhatever name you may have been calling your high-strung digestive system),but this one is a great one to start with.Right on the cover it listsseveral of the names IBS has been called over the years. It's short, whichlets you then move on to books related to the specifics of your owncondition, which it emphasizes again and again varies widely from person toperson.I especially liked the chapter "Kids with IBS", asubject close to the hearts of any of us who have been long misunderstood(and too often blaimed) for having this disorder. We each develop our ownway to cope, and how great to read the chapter "Talking toYourself" and discover that I really wasn't crazy after all.A greatbook to start with, but don't stop here because the truth really will setyou free (or at least help you live with it). ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Decent basic overview of irritable bowel syndrome
As a physician who suffers from diarrhea-predominant IBS, I am interested in pursuing alternative therapies.I have done acupunture, Chinese herbs and rolfing in addition to dietary restriction, two rounds of Xifaxan, and meditation.I found the book interesting reading but believe that some of the information is outdated or incorrect especially in reference to suggested diets. I did like that the author discussed several alternative therapies for the treatment of IBS.I suffer from certain food sensitivities/intolerances which is also addressed in the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding; the ideal treatment of a sensitive subject
No need to feel embarrassed:everybody suffers from IBS from time to time.I was looking for a book that would offer more than a study guide to the digestive system combined with an encyclopedia on dietary measures, and I wound up more pleased than ever!Author Rosemary Nicol's diverse handling of everything from symptoms (both physical and emotional) of IBS and similar ailments, to stress management, antidotes and diet is absolutely impressive.

I'm not sure what her background is, but Ms. Nicol's writing exhibits thoughtful, intelligent and especially sensitive insight in discussing IBS from the perspectives of biology, psychology, and personality. Then, she elaborates on a range of antidotes too numerous to detail in this space. The one thing that will forever stand out in my mind after reading this book is the absolutely outstanding sensitivity with which the author discusses the psychological and emotional aspects linked to IBS.Her writing is simple and personable, and she doesn't talk down to the reader by throwing in tons of technical terms. The section on diet is very good, but the greatest comfort comes from someone who knows how you feel, and who looks at every angle imaginable in helping you find solutions to this bothersome condition.I give this my highest recommendation.

5-0 out of 5 stars So thankful for this book
This book has given me hope that there is relief from my IBS. It explains this condition in a way anyone can understand. I discovered things that might be contributing to my symptoms that I had no idea were even remotelyrelated to IBS. It gives a comprehensive overview of the many treatmentsavailable, focusing on the natural and homeopathic. I have begunimplementing many of the dietary and lifestyle changes covered in this bookand look forward to feeling better. I am already feeling better, knowingthat I am taking a proactive role in regards to my health. This book hasgiven me the motivation and knowledge to take control of my own health andlife again. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great product, awesome price, great service!!!
Just a note to let you know that you have great products, awesome prices, but most of all, great service!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Clearly defective
A book that displays two prominent topics in its title, namely "IBS" and "Diverticulosis" and then proceeds never to mention one of those topics again ("Diverticulosis") is clearly defective.IBS and Diverticulosis can be very similar symptomatically but are by no means identical or even synonymous. The title is so misleading as to be unacceptable by any reasonable literary standard.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing, almost miraculous help
I was diagnosed with IBS many years ago when I was having three or more episodes each week.My life was unmanageable with it; I couldn't leave the house because I'd be fine one minute, and in a cold sweat and excruciating pain ten minutes later.Often, there was no warning.

My condition had built up slowly, over a period of about five years.Initially, doctors thought that it was a food allergy. In time, they realized that I had a chronic condition--probably IBS but possibly diverticulitis or something related--but their advice involved an extreme (and unrealistic) limited diet and painkillers that knocked me out for nearly a day.Their advice seemed like a band aid, not a cure or even a workable solution.

I was becoming an anxious recluse, afraid to leave the house or schedule anything important. The pain was beyond anything I'd experienced, except in childbirth.

I bought this book out of desperation, and started applying some of the dozens of helpful tips right away. Most worked, but a few didn't.(They didn't make it worse, they just didn't help.)

Gradually, I narrowed my focus to three or four recommendations that helped the most, and I used them every time.(For me, enteric-coated peppermint oil capsules are vital at the earliest symptoms.I learned about those readily available capsules in this book.)

My IBS episodes became shorter. They "aftershocks" (lesser episodes that followed a major IBS attack) were gentler and smaller in number. In time, they stopped altogether.

It's been over four years since my last full-blown IBS episode.During those years, I've had three minor incidents, but nothing that kept me in bed for a full day afterwards.

This book is the single most important reason why I was able to resume a relatively normal lifestyle after being pretty much housebound for close to a year.Years later, I can barely remember how awful life was when I constant worried about an IBS episode interrupting everything from professional meetings and my kids' school picnics, to grocery shopping.

My doctors were amazed and impressed at my improvement, and time has proved that my condition is stable now.

Some doctors estimate that IBS and related issues are second only to the common cold as reasons why people call in sick at work.Whether or not that's true, I was amazed when I started admitting that I have IBS.Close to half of my friends confessed that they suffered from IBS episodes as well.

Without exception, everyone I've talked with who has IBS--including my mother--has used this book with rave results. Many of them have referred other people to this book, too.

This book changed my life for the better.

1-0 out of 5 stars Irritable Bowel Syndrome & Dverticulosis
Got Diverticulosis and want help?Dont buy this book. These are two different ailments and the author treats them as one.

Very dissapointed, save your money.

Except for the title, you cannot find any reference to Diverticulosis in this book.Otherwise, it is a useful book. ... Read more
