Book Description
This book has been created for patients who have decided to make education and research an integral part of the treatment process. Although it also gives information useful to doctors, caregivers and other health professionals, it tells patients where and how to look for information covering virtually all topics related to juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (also Juvenile arthritis; Juvenile chronic arthritis; Juvenile chronic polyarthritis; Juvenile polyarthritis; Still disease; Still's disease), from the essentials to the most advanced areas of research. The title of this book includes the word official. This reflects the fact that the sourcebook draws from public, academic, government, and peer-reviewed research. Selected readings from various agencies are reproduced to give you some of the latest official information available to date on juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. Given patients' increasing sophistication in using the Internet, abundant references to reliable Internet-based resources are provided throughout this sourcebook. Where possible, guidance is provided on how to obtain free-of-charge, primary research results as well as more detailed information via the Internet. E-book and electronic versions of this sourcebook are fully interactive with each of the Internet sites mentioned (clicking on a hyperlink automatically opens your browser to the site indicated). Book Description

An essential survival guide for parents whose children suffer with persistent and often debilitating pain

Approximately ten million children are living with chronic pain. Most people would be surprised at such numbers, but for the parents of these children, the challenge of helping a pain-stricken child live a normal life is a frightening and frustrating reality. Chronic pain in children can manifest as abdominal, migraine, or facial pain. It also stems from a wide variety of disorders such as juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, cystic fibrosis, hemophilia, and childhood cancers. No matter what type of chronic pain the child suffers with, a parent must be armed with an understanding of how a child's expression and experience of pain differs from an adult's.

Trained in pediatric anesthesia and intensive care at Boston Children's Hospital, Dr. Elliot Krane has devoted his entire professional life to refining and innovating techniques, strategies, and therapies to relieve the suffering of children with pain. In his book, Relieve Your Child's Chronic Pain, parents will find the information and tools they need to get the very best care for their child. It will help you:

  • Recognize, measure, and evaluate your child's pain properly

  • Learn about the many alternative pain-management approaches that can be used at home

  • Dispel fears about addiction if your child is prescribed a narcotic

  • Find an appropriate pain-management clinic for your child

  • Reduce the stress and anxiety in the home in a way that benefits the entire family

You may not always be able to eliminate chronic pain entirely, but you can succeed in minimizing your child's suffering.

5-0 out of 5 stars Teaches young readers about juvenile rheumatoid arthritis
Keeping A Secret: A Story About Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis is a unique, non-fiction children's book that teaches young readers about juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, its diagnosis, and its treatment. Four-color illustrations by April Hartmann brings to life a heartwarming book written specifically by Elizabeth Murphy-Melas to help young readers diagnosed with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (and their friends and family) to better understand, adapt, and cope with this sometimes painful and debilitating condition. Keeping A Secret is very highly recommended for school and community library collections.

5-0 out of 5 stars Recommended reading re: JRA
It's nice, simple reading for all.As one of the only autobiographies by a person with JRA, Nicole's Story is a nice resource for understanding, sympathizing, and empathizing if you have JRA.My daughter has JRA and I'm sure she'll be glad to have this book so she can see that she is not alone. I think I'll share it with her teachers and classmates too.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have for any family with a child with arthritis
This pictorial book of a real life story of Nicole, a little girl with arthritis kept my children's attention. My daughter has juvenile rheumatoid arthritis and this book helped her to see she is not alone in her struggles. She can easily relate to Nicole. I also gave this book to both my children's teachers for their classroom collection. It explains alot about JRA as well as making it 'acceptable'. They found it to be informative as well as touching.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Message
This book sends out a greatmessage to young people stricken down with this painful disease. I was diagnosed with JRA when I was fourteen, and I'm 15 now. Thing is, we aren't stricken down. With the help of medical science and power of God, we'll always find a way to live through yet anotherday that drags on to feel like an eternity. This is a book every JRA-RA patient should read, young or adult. My love and prayers go out to Nicole and her family, plus all the rest of us with this formerly "crippling" disease. But there's hope if you catch it soon enough. I had it for months before we got a diagnosis.

Goodbye and God Bless

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful
I rate this book very high because I have the same disease and I'm 12 and it's amazing that she goes through the same things

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Job Nicole. A great gift for any child or parent.
Great book! I recommend this book for parents as well as teachers and medical professionals who work with patients suffering from JRA. I've had JRA for 17 years and was finally diagnosed at age 16, after two years ofsymptoms and suffering from the crippling RA pain.

The list ofresources in this book will help any parent or patient work out problemsthey may encounter living with this disease. As an author it's great tosee, and use a book that takes JRA seriously from a child's point of view.I've resourced many books written by medical professionals that lecturepatients on how to cope. But Nicole's Story goes the the heart of what allof us living, coping, and surviving with RA and JRA experience on a dailybasis. And I plan to use it in all my support groups for kids and teenliving with JRA.

Nicole's Story will help discard the myth thatArthritis is just "an old person's disease." Kids coping with JRAhave now found a voice. I hope more people will take the time to listen.Bravo Nicole! ... Read more

Can magnets relieve arthritis pain? Does the scent of lavender calm the nerves? Is St. John's Wort a mood enhancer? Authoritative, objective and in tune with the subjects that matter to students and researchers, Gale presents four volumes of current, unbiased information on alternative and complementary medical practices. Covering all aspects of the subject --Therapies, Conditions/Diseases, Herbs/Plants and People -- the Encyclopedia identifies 150 types of alternative medicine being practiced today, including reflexology, acupressure, acupuncture, chelation therapy, kinesiology, yoga, chiropractic, Feldenkrais, polarity therapy, detoxification, naturopathy, Chinese medicine, biofeedback, Ayurveda and osteopathy. For the practitioner or interested patient, there are current training requirements, listings of organizations, as well as descriptions of treatments.

Information on recommended therapies for specific disorders and diseases, medicinal uses for plants and herbs are balanced by conclusions of studies on efficacy and analysis of current levels of acceptance by traditional scientists and doctors. Biographies of pioneers in the field -- including Deepak Chopra, Edward Bach and David Palmer --appear as sidebars through the text. Included are 39 sidebars. Each volume contains a color photo insert containing images of herbs. There are more than 275 disease/condition entries, 300 herb/remedy entries, and 150 therapies. ... Read more
