3-0 out of 5 stars no consistency
the primer is written by several different individual doctors, so some chapters are well written, while others aren't. it's also hard to follow because some concepts are defined slightly different than others.

4-0 out of 5 stars great book, but it will be outdated in a few weeks
This is a great overview of nephrology for any medical resident, general practitioner or even a renal fellow. Lots of images, tables and graphics enhance the reading experience. I wish I had known that a new updated version would come out in a few weeks, then I would have waited a little longer with my purchase.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good book but can be improved.
I would recommend this book for anyone interested in Nephrology. It has excellent illustrations and covers most topics thouroughly. However, transplant section and hypertension could have been better. Most of all it is not expensive!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good Nephrology Book
I think its a very good book for IM residents in general and for those who aspir to become Nephrology fellow in particular.
I would highly recommend it to every first year fellow as a starting book and then shift to other books...
It is not too detailed and very uptodate and by NKF and best of all it is not $300 ...it only $40.
Paper is glossy and figures are good.
Enjoy reading !

Product Description
Joan Brookhyser Hogan is a registered dietition who has packed this new book "The Vegetarian Diet for Kidney Disease," with clearly stated, up-to-date information on the most effective methods for managing kidney disease. Her focus on vegetarian nutrition comes from a growing awareness of its value in wrestling kidney disease down to size, or, in the best-case scenario, stopping the progression of this destructive disease in it's tracks. When the author first became a dietition several decades ago, it was a different story. Plant proteins were then considered inferior to animal proteins, a belief based on the erroneous conclusion that plants contained high levels of certain minerals thought to cause complications in chronic kidney disease. Thanks, however, to ongoing research in the intervening years, this false belief has since been reversed. Vegetarianism has not only become acceptable, it is now considered superior to animal-based diets for the prevention and treatment of chronic kidney disease. This valuable book has a great deal of specific informaion to assist you in implementing, or continuiing, a plant-based diet that can help, not harm, the health of your kidneys. Hogan first outlines the benefits of vegetarianism, and follows that wih chapters on the stages of Kidney disease, on common problems associated with the disease, and on the relationship of this disease to other disorders. An enlightening discussion of the link between kidneys and diet precedes a diet plan that also includes herbals, supplements, and other natural products, with a final chapter on detailed meal plans and recipes providing the core of the author's program. Along with numerous, detailed tables and graphs and a smattering of case histories printed throughout, there are Appendices, Resources, and References situated in back that serve to round out the guidelines and highlight the benefits of this relevant book that anyone with chronic kidney disese will find useful, even indeispensable. ... Product Description
A revolutionary program that can indefinitely postpone the need for dialysis

If you’ve been diagnosed with kidney failure, this book could save your life.If you suffer from diabetes, hypertension, obesity, or any of a host of conditions that put you at risk for kidney disease, you owe it to yourself to read what is in this book.If you are among the 60,000 North Americans who go on dialysis each year, the information in this book could substantially improve your quality of life.

In Coping with Kidney Disease, a leading expert tells you, in plain English, what you need to know to:

  • Understand kidney failure
  • Recognize early warning signs of kidney failure
  • Get a proper diagnosis
  • Talk with your doctors about it
  • Confidently evaluate treatment options
  • Take charge of your treatment
  • Delay dialysis or even avoid the need for it altogether

The centerpiece of Coping with Kidney Disease is Dr. Walser’s revolutionary 12-step program for avoiding dialysis.Based on treatments he has pioneered with his own patients at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, the program calls for a supplemented low-protein diet supported by treatments to control blood pressure and correct high cholesterol. So effective has this breakthrough strategy proven to be that in many patients it actually worked to slow or arrest the progression of kidney failure to the end stage.

Knowledge is power. Coping with Kidney Disease empowers you with what you need to take charge of kidney disease. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Kidney Disease book
This Kidney Disease book is very helpful. Haven't read cover-to-cover, just scanning through to pick up information that I need at the moment and haven't been disappointed.

4-0 out of 5 stars Talking Points for your Next Visit with the Kidney Doctor
I'm glad I bought this book because it was very easy to read and gave me plenty of useful talking points to discuss with my doctors.I read this book after consulting with a nephrologist regarding my recent diagnosis for CKD.It was refreshing to learn that both the author, Dr. Walser, and my doctors agree on following a course of treatment that will help defer dialysis for as long as possible. This includes the low protein diet advocated in this book.I'm planning on meeting with a registered dietician to help me plan meals that will fit my specific needs.

The best parts of this book come from the author's discussion of the 12 treatment factors to pay close attention to.It's a good checklist to run by your doctors, especially if you don't have the resources to self test.Like other reviewers mentioned, I agree that the list of low protein foods and recipes could use some help. But I did find it a useful place to start.I also found the discussion of drug benefits and risks quite useful.

The book was written several years ago and it might be worth following up on the studies mentioned inside.Overall, though, I would recommend it for newly diagnosed kidney patients and their families.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great source
I read this book then went to see the book reviews again, I agree with all positive comments and disagree with some negative ones. I found the tables of food protein content not very handy. Although tables classified food from low to high protein content and what is safe to eat and what is not, the amount of protein was given per 100 calories of that food not per a measured quantity, cup, table spoon..etc. which does not serve the ordinary reader much. Otherwise, I found the book extremely helpful and a must-read for every kidney patient. It explains in easy-to-understand language ALL the topics that can in a way or another affect your kidney. After reading the tons of tips, you'll end up with SOLID education about kidney function and disease. Remember, in a 10 minute visit, your doctor will not educate you about your kidney, he barely has time to give you few important tips, and here is where this book comes into play. EDUCATION IN MY OPENION IS AS IMPORTANT AS MEDICATIONS. I looked at the publications available in the market that deal with kidney disease and found this book a unique source of hundreds of tips to help you push dialysis or kidney transplant as far as possible. Thankfully, not only a doctor or a professor at a top university for decades, Dr. Walser has solid background in kidney disease, and for a $12 price, this book is Walser's contribution to kidney patients compared to other publications written by, what I like to call, human word-processors with no medical background selling for 6 times as much.

3-0 out of 5 stars Some Good, Some Bad
This book contains a lot of good practical information about kidney disease. It also contains a lot of contradicting advice, such as reducing dietary salt then proposing a dietary menu that has over 1100mg of salt in one serving.Kidney patients are often advised to reduce dietary potassium consumption. The author disagrees and some of the recipes and menu items are very high in potassium. I felt that the proposed "low protein" diet was very poor, not something I would be willing to eat no matter how much time the author claims it will keep me off dialysis.Much of it is prepared food that is purchased and while it might be low in protein, it's pretty low in real food value as well. The menus also included a lot of food I would not eat normally, like alcohol (for the calories, the author says) potatoe chips and snack bars. What the author does not discuss is how many people go on the low protein diet and do not benefit.Indeed, that would be difficult if not impossible to measure: was it the diet or was it some other factor that delayed dialysis?

5-0 out of 5 stars Definitly worth reading if you have chronic kidney disease
Despite having read all the free information available on the Internet, I found the book to be an extremely helpful, honest and factual summary of the symptoms of the different kinds of kidney disease and the available treatment options. Although the central treatment recommendation of the book is the low protein diet, the author also gives a list of conditions to monitor and the appropriate corrections for each in order to maintain health and fitness.

I definitely recommend the book to anyone with chronic kidney disease - even if you only get a couple of tips from it, they could be the tips that save you from dialysis or a transplant! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A clear introduction to adjusting your diet for kidney disease
This is a Vegetarian Diet Book for patients with kidney diease. Prior to buying this book I did a considerable amount of internet research on how to manage a loved one's nutritional needs for Glomerulonephritis. This book, which I initially borrowed from the library, provided the clearest explanation of the unique dietary needs and how to address them in a format that I could easily understand. It quickly helped me to clear up some misconceptions and make some positive changes in the diet. It also was among the few books that I viewed that clearly addressed the individual needs of different types and stages of kidney disease. It's the best book for patients and non-professionals that I've read to date. A friend of mine who is a Veterinarian thought it was a good reference for his patients as well. I wonder if the other reviewers understood that it was specifically geared towards preserving kidney function??? Definitely 5 stars.

3-0 out of 5 stars useful but not as complete as I would like
I would have liked for this book to compare vegetarian products such as tofu, tempeh and seitan and to include more recipes using these products. There were only 20 pages of recipes.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Vegetarian Diet for Kidney Disease Treatment
This book was a rare find. Absolutely fantastic - easy to read, easy to navigate, easy to dip in and out of as well as being informative and research based. Plant-based proteins are SO much better than animal proteins for our bodies and therefore this book is vital not only for vegetarians but for anyone wanting to know more about how to manage kidney disease safely and effectively. Strongly recommended.

1-0 out of 5 stars Stupid Book
This book is a huge disappointment. It seems to be the most basic, elementary, idiotic presentation of the obvious that is possible. It is even in big huge print so I guess it is designed for imbeciles. This is a horrible waste of paper.

2-0 out of 5 stars Marginally Useful
This little book has some useful information in it, and a lot of recipes.Almost all of the recipes, however, depend upon special, expensive, mail order ingredients.I believe it is possible to make low-protein meals without such ingredients. In making bread, for instance, I mix in 0 protein tapioca starch (from the oriental food market) and white cornmeal. The bread you get isn't Wonder Bread, to be sure, but it has about half the protein content of commercial bread and it tastes pretty good.I don't find the book indispensible by any means. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Overall complete and easy to understand, though repetitive and confusing at times
As a med student at UW-Madison, our class is the pilot class for this text. It reads like a first edition text with several authors/contributors, and lacks the consistency in authorship, style and prose that I have appreciated in books like Robbin's Pathophysiology or Guyton's Medical Physiology.

Overall, the book reads smoothly enough and gets the point across well enough for you to leave with a good understanding of renal pathophysiology. However, you will find sections of the book repetitive or quite simply confusing due to multiple authorship (the confusing portions are relatively few, but very frustrating). We have encountered a few inaccurate statements as well. I think they could have spent more time editing it and the book could easily be 50 pages shorter and still do a good job of teaching with less confusion.

On the plus side, they have some nice diagrams/pictures and little blue/gray boxes that summarize entire pages. This can be helpful for when you are trying to remember what you just spent the last 10 minutes reading after getting bogged down in the details, but can also be pointless and just a list of words with little meaning.

Should you buy the book? If your class is relying on it heavily like ours, yes. If you are a book learner, this could be a good text for you. However, Big Robbins has a nice section on Renal pathophysiology that could be a sufficient resource for you too. If the book got the confusing parts cleaned up, had more consistency in style, and shortened to avoid repetition it would be a 4-5 star text.

2-0 out of 5 stars eh...
this book isn't very good.each chapter has different authors and thus a different feel due to different writing styles, so there's not really continuity.the objectives are over simplified.the "organization" within the chapters doesn't provide much of a scaffold to try to arrange the info in your head, so you'll spend more time than usual going over and over the same ideas to parse it out on your own.important ideas aren't framed well, they're just sort of randomly strewn about.the images reviewing basic physiology are quite confusing.the summary boxes that are intended to be useful quick reference are neither.i'm sure subsequent editions will be better as the authors have been receptive to feedback, but save your $ and get a different renal book for now. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A great book more than just a cookbook
My hasband was diagnosed with kidney disease and I didn't know what to feed him, I ordered this book and we have been using it ever since.I was pleasantly surprised to find a going out guide and a frozen entree guide for the days I did not want to cook.Extensive drink guide and even a list of types of lettuce to use. Most the recipes are simple and all have been delicious and the rest of my family has been eating them too. Each recipe has the potassium and other nutrients listed at the bottom I also purchased the other book too and with those two books I feel more informed and not as nervous about what to do.[[ASIN:0615234380 Kidney Health Gourmet Diet Guide and Kidney Friendly Recipes for People Not on Dialysis] this book had been recommended to me by a lady in the doctor's waiting room and I recommend it as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tasty and Healthy
The recipes are wonderful. You don't have to have kidney disease to eat these meals. My husband and I are eating healthier and enjoying food more since finding this cookbook. For the most part, the ingredients are everyday items you would usually have in your kitchen.

2-0 out of 5 stars not very good
it claims to be for kidney health, but a number of things in it are in exact opposite of what I am being told by doctors and others with PKD. and there are some very unhealthy for anyone items listed in it. I cannot respect her as an authority on the subject after going through the book.

chocolate, tea and coffee are hard on the kidneys. only people without kidney disease should use any of those items. for that matter, it is said that Rosemary is also to hard on the kidneys.

many of the recipes have large amounts of sodium in them. some of the recipes call for processed foods which are always excessively high in sodium. some recipes call for processed foods that have chemicals in them no-one should eat-fake whipped cream has plastics and solvents in them.

recipes that should have the healthy (ie salt free, etc.) product in them, do not. butter is called for, not salt free butter. Splenda, a known ant killer, is called for instead of Stevia or cane sugar. cane sugar isn't good for diabetics, but my diabetic husband started losing weight he had not been able to lose when I took him off of Splenda and put him on Stevia.

I wouldn't recommend this book. it is not condusive to staying off of dialysis, which is what I MUST do. off to find a far better cook book.

I would have tagged this message but the tag system is not functioning.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not a very good book for the price!
The cook book has some general information on cooking and kidney diets but there aren't a lot of receipes. There are only a handful of receipes and seems cheaply put together. The book is over priced for what you get! I was very disappointed! Not worth the price. A much better value and has been more useful is " The Cleveland Clinic Foundation Creative Cooking for Renal Diets". It is a much better value. Better receipes, MORE receipes,easier..regular meals and I love how ALL of the nutrition information is listed in the back of the book. It makes it so much easier when I cook a meal for my husband that I know exactly how much potassium, calories, fat, protein, etc. are in each meal and each serving. Buy "The Cleveland Clinic Foundation Creative Cooking for Renal Diets" instead of this one...you won't be disappointed.

2-0 out of 5 stars Gourmet? You have got to be kidding!
I am so thankful I didn't buy the $73 edition.I was not impressed by the meagerness of the recipes - many of which looked like they were lifted from Betty Crocker in 1964 - honestly - Cucumber dill dip and Shortcake with Strawberries topped with Cool Whip? However, the information provided about calories, potassium, phospates was informative but could be found on any website pertaining to CKD.Overall, disappointing. The fillers - napkin folding and quick fixes were designed to add pages and were completely unneccessary.I won't even take this to my nephrologist for fear of being laughed out of his office. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars chronic kidney disease (CKD) and hypertension essentials 2010
This small book provided reasonable updated coverage on the subject of hypertension among the CKD's, but it essentially did not provide any data on the subject of CKD. I bought the book thinking that it would cover recent debates and controversies on CKD as the title was prominant for CKD! Howevere, I did not regret buying it as I found it helpful on hypertension. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars a start, but with some big mistakes
I got this book along with many others in order to learn more about my renal disease.I read this one first, and was impressed by the clarity of the explanations. However, after reading more about renal diets I became aware that the nutritional information given in the book for specific foods was grossly incorrect.

I DO NOT reccommend using this book as a guide to meal planning and preparation. It is far too basic, leaves out too many foods, and furthermore it gives dangerously incorrect content levels of sodium, potassium, and phosphorus for specific foods.Upon reading other renal diet books it is clear that the levels of some foods are 3 to 4 times higher than stated in this book. Please be careful with your health and double check.

Try the online publication found here: publications.gc.ca.Search for H58-28-1999E

Also, this book is very misleading, in that it refuses to allow for vegetarian or low meat-protein diets. Many studies have been done thatshow that vegetarian diets are FINE for those with renal disease.Again, double check for the sake of your health.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not as good as I thought....
I thought I was getting a bigger more informative book for the price I paid for a used in new condition book. I paid 49.95 plus shipping. You could get this advice from a renal nutritionist. I would not have paid this price had I known what is in it .

5-0 out of 5 stars disease kidney

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide for nutrition of kidney patients
I think the contents of this book are beneficial as like as medical treatment for kidney patients. To cope with kidney failure, this book will provide kidney patients a powerful weapon called nutrition. In addition togeneral diet guide, this book suggests some methods to cook for kidneypatients, which are really interesting and various. Kidney patients canchoose the best menus they like in the situation of kidney failure.Especially, if you are kidney patients under dialysis, I strongly recommendthis book because nutrition is really important for you. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great addition to my bookshelf
I am a registered dietitian. I found No More Kidney Stones to be well-researched and full of practical information, I recommend this book for both patients and medical professionals.

4-0 out of 5 stars Avoid kidney stones
Useful book with receipts to prevent kidney stones. One of the rare spacies in this field!

5-0 out of 5 stars Preventing future kidney stones
After being diagnosed with kidney stones, passing three on my own and having two separate surgeries, I decided to take the advice of my nephrologist to prevent them from recurring. This book is a textbook of knowledge covering areas relating to how the stones are formed, causes and multiple plans of action to prevent them from occurring again. My book is "highlighted", paperclipped and "dog-eared" to easily locate golden nuggets of wisdom that I don't want to forget.Because this approach is a multi-faceted one, it requires multiple changes to be made in one's lifestyle. Some of the changes I had to make were diet (switching to low-oxalate), increasing consumption of water, calcium with meals, strict reduction of salt and the decrease of my diuretics. This book gives explanation and suggestions as to how to make the changes work for you.It does require a juggling act and this straight-forward "textbook" has been a great source for staying on course, that is to prevent future kidney stones. It is easy reading and comes in chapters by subject. However, I found it most helpful to mark the items (as you would mark up a "textbook") that specifically were important for ME to remember for easy quick reference.
