Book Description
A revolutionary program that can indefinitely postpone the need for dialysis

If you've been diagnosed with kidney failure, this book could save your life.If you suffer from diabetes, hypertension, obesity, or any of a host of conditions that put you at risk for kidney disease, you owe it to yourself to read what is in this book.If you are among the 60,000 North Americans who go on dialysis each year, the information in this book could substantially improve your quality of life.

In Coping with Kidney Disease, a leading expert tells you, in plain English, what you need to know to:

  • Understand kidney failure
  • Recognize early warning signs of kidney failure
  • Get a proper diagnosis
  • Talk with your doctors about it
  • Confidently evaluate treatment options
  • Take charge of your treatment
  • Delay dialysis or even avoid the need for it altogether

The centerpiece of Coping with Kidney Disease is Dr. Walser's revolutionary 12-step program for avoiding dialysis.Based on treatments he has pioneered with his own patients at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, the program calls for a supplemented low-protein diet supported by treatments to control blood pressure and correct high cholesterol. So effective has this breakthrough strategy proven to be that in many patients it actually worked to slow or arrest the progression of kidney failure to the end stage.

Knowledge is power. Coping with Kidney Disease empowers you with what you need to take charge of kidney disease.Download Description

2-0 out of 5 stars Low protein?? Not!!
I haven't read the book. But based on reviews which discuss the "low protein" diet, I'd like to comment that most nephrologists have not used that in years for the simple reasons that it debilitates the patients without helping the progression of kidney failure. I am the wife and mother of kidney patients. Presently I am looking for a few books to help my daughter-in-law and son with their diet planning. (A weird Christmas present.) Again, based on the low protein diet, I won't be buying this book. Our family disease is polycystic renal disease

5-0 out of 5 stars Kidneyproblems
Excellent source of info related to kidney problems. Makes one a more knowledgeable patient when interacting with nephrology doc.

5-0 out of 5 stars When you need this book - Thank God it is there!
The book spells out how diet and retricting certain foods can stop and even reverse kidney disease. I had a blood test done and found that my GFR was only 26 - Stage 4 Kidney Disease - that was a huge shock to me since it went from above 60 down to 26 in five months! That is a huge motivator to do something and I am willing to try out the recomendations in the book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank God for Dr Walser
This book, in my opinion,is a must for kidney patients. Well written and easy to understand, it gave me a much better understanding of CKD and what I need to do to live a longer and healthier life. Dialysis is not something I want to experience.

After being diagnosed with CKD 18 months ago (stage 3)I did a lot of research on diet, etc. and happened upon Dr. Walser's book. With the approval of my nephrologist, I started using the amino acid suppliments in place of most of my dietary protein. My GFR went from 45 to 75 in three months. Very heartening!

Most of the recipe books for CKD patients, in my opinion, offer a nutritionally deficient regimen and many seemed more like recipe books for developing diabetes. Being a person who likes whole foods, I decided to create my own diet regimen. I bought a copy of DietPro (a diet program that tracks food nutrition by weight) for my computer, a digital food scale, some Calwood Nutritionals amino acid powders and some of the other nutritional suppliments Dr Walser recommended. Since I'm still in the earlier stages of CKD, some days I still eat a small amount of animal protein with my evening meal, but limit it to under 4 ounces raw. I keep my potassium at 2000-3000 mg, phosphorus at 1500-1000 and sodium to under 1500 daily.

It wasn't easy at first, but I'm used to it now. It takes a bit of time to set up the menu plan initially, but after that I spend about 15 minutes a day on DietPro working out my daily menu. My nephrologist says I'm doing very well and says he wishes more of his patients took a more active interest in managing their CKD. My bun creatine levels have improved and my blood potassium levels have dropped to the normal range. The swelling in my ankles and hands is pretty much gone too.

Thank you Dr. Walser!!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars A Must for Those with Kidney Disease
This book is the best out there on Kidney Disease and how to manage it.I rated it 4 stars instead of 5 because I think there is room for improvement with regards to diet and menus. For those seeking information on Kidney Disease and how to best deal with it, the biggest frustration is the lack of good information available. The author explains why not much has been done about educating the public with kidney disease.A lot of good information. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Very good book but can be improved.
I would recommend this book for anyone interested in Nephrology. It has excellent illustrations and covers most topics thouroughly. However, transplant section and hypertension could have been better. Most of all it is not expensive!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good Nephrology Book
I think its a very good book for IM residents in general and for those who aspir to become Nephrology fellow in particular.
I would highly recommend it to every first year fellow as a starting book and then shift to other books...
It is not too detailed and very uptodate and by NKF and best of all it is not $300 ...it only $40.

5-0 out of 5 stars primer on kidney disease
THIS IS AN EXCELLENT BOOK ON NEPHROLOGY, IT'S CONCISE AND VERY WELL ILLUSTRATED, PROBABLY THE BEST INTRODUCTORY BOOK ON NEPHROLOGY, BUT PROBABLY NOT AS COMPREHENSIVE AS THOSE 100 LB BOOKS.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great text for those interested in nephrology
I am a medicine resident interested in nephrology. This book starts out with the basics of renal anatomy/physiology, approach to patients with kidney disease, and goes on to define/classify, and provide an outline for diagnosis/therapy of common kidney disorders. Its depth suits perfectly medicine residents, and probably, as others have mentioned, fellows starting their training. Those looking for a more in-depth text might consider Johnson&Feehaly's Comprehensive Clinical nephrology. ... Read more

Book Description
More than 250,000 persons in the USA alone (and millions worldwide) have some form of end stage renal disease (ESRD). For the hundreds of thousands who must undergo dialysis to stay alive, excessive serum creatinine—the metabolic "waste" product of creatine, a natural component of meat, contributes to the vicious cycle of nausea, vomiting, anorexia and diminished quality of life experienced by both kidney patients, and those approaching renal failure.

Through extensive research, Wendy Lou Jones (Royal Knight, Inc.) has created a unique self-help guide to assist both the kidney patient, and those approaching end stage renal failure, in break this negative cycle.

The consumer friendly techniques for creatine removal, presented in 14-point font, are well detailed and easy to follow. Special attention was given to taste and quality of the final product.

By applying the techniques outlined in this text, patients with renal insufficiency/impairment should, by working closely with members of their healthcare team, be able to regain the dietary flexibility they had lost.

A clear, concise, step by step guide for the layperson. Manageable both in size and language, "More Bio-Fuel---Less Bio-Waste"is a handy reference manual for the kidney patient's kitchen.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very helpful guide
Having kidney failure means not being able to eat everything you use to because of waste build up in the blood. Following the instructions in this book when cooking meat can help reduce blood creatinine.

1-0 out of 5 stars don't waste your money....
This book is repetitive and very poorly edited. The author states the same approach to cooking meat and chicken in different chapters. However, the chapters are almost identical, except for the words "chicken" or "meat". The science in the book is based on an "unpublished paper" by the author. Funding for the book was provided by a grant from a company for which she is the CEO/founder. This book is useless. ... Read more

Book Description
Analgesic nephropathy, first recognized in 1950, was for two decades the most common cause of both acute and chronic renal failure in some parts of the world. This comprehensive text follows the story of the disease from its early description to its ultimatly sucessful prevention. The aetiology, pathology, diagnosis, and treatment are described by those who have played leading roles in elucidating the nature of the disease, and in persuading society to take effective measures to prevent its occurence. The second section describes those renal disorders resulting from the use of newer non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and paracetamol - disorders which are rising in frequency and may prove more difficult to prevent. Finally, the book considers the urothelia cancers caused by phanacetin-containing headache powders, a late outcome of analgesic abuse. With contributions from a distinguished international group of authors, this is a unique book on a challenging problem. Throughout the text, theory and practice are integrated, and attention is drawn to the valuable lessons gained from the study of the analgesic nephropathies. ... Read more

Many sites provide valuable information, while others may have information that is unreliable or misleading." Furthermore, because of the rapid increase in Internet-based information, many hours can be wasted searching, selecting, and printing. Since only the smallest fraction of information dealing with polycystic kidney disease is indexed in search engines, such as www.google.com or others, a non-systematic approach to Internet research can be not only time consuming, but also incomplete. 4-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant
This book is far and away the clearest and most insightful book on kidney disease. The organization is exceptional, not so much the organization of chapters as the organization of thought that is clear throughout the book. Each disease is explained in a perfect context, making it clear how it's similar to but different from others (a great antidote to complains that renal diseases "all look the same and all get steroids anyway".Well, maybe only an antidote to the first claim...).It explains the tools available and ways to assess kidney disease at just the right level of depth--everything that a clinician would need to know, but not details better suited for pathology textbooks. It's about twice as long as it's successor (Renal Pathophysiology: The Essentials) but ten times as insightful.

The curious aspect of reading this book is that it's now 20 years old.In some ways, it's prophetic (such as the value of angiotensin blockade), but in other ways, even the pathophysiology discussion is outdated (no mention of E. coli O157:H7 in the section on hemolytic-uremic syndrome). The discussions of therapy are obsolete, but therapy isn't a major part of a book like this anyway.Even though the brilliance can't be beat, the book is outdated enough that it probably can't be used as a single source on kidney disease, so has to serve as a second book for an especially motivated student. An updated edition would get six stars.

4-0 out of 5 stars Another great book
This book can be considered complimentary to more physiologic books about the acid-base/electrolite balance books about renal system. Author describes all pathologies with related test procedures and values. Provides pointers for what to look and what not to mix with. Overall very good introductory book in the subject of renal pathology.

2-0 out of 5 stars a start, but with some big mistakes
I got this book along with many others in order to learn more about my renal disease.I read this one first, and was impressed by the clarity of the explanations. However, after reading more about renal diets I became aware that the nutritional information given in the book for specific foods was grossly incorrect.

I DO NOT reccommend using this book as a guide to meal planning and preparation. It is far too basic, leaves out too many foods, and furthermore it gives dangerously incorrect content levels of sodium, potassium, and phosphorus for specific foods.Upon reading other renal diet books it is clear that the levels of some foods are 3 to 4 times higher than stated in this book. Please be careful with your health and double check.

Try the online publication found here: publications.gc.ca.Search for H58-28-1999E

Also, this book is very misleading, in that it refuses to allow for vegetarian or low meat-protein diets. Many studies have been done thatshow that vegetarian diets are FINE for those with renal disease.Again, double check for the sake of your health.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not as good as I thought....
I thought I was getting a bigger more informative book for the price I paid for a used in new condition book. I paid 49.95 plus shipping. You could get this advice from a renal nutritionist. I would not have paid this price had I known what is in it .

This little book has some useful information in it, and a lot of recipes.Almost all of the recipes, however, depend upon special, expensive, mail order ingredients.I believe it is possible to make low-protein meals without such ingredients. In making bread, for instance, I mix in 0 protein tapioca starch (from the oriental food market) and white cornmeal. The bread you get isn't Wonder Bread, to be sure, but it has about half the protein content of commercial bread and it tastes pretty good.I don't find the book indispensible by any means. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Kidney Friendly Comfort Foods
The author should stick to his primary profession. He is not a medical professional and moreover doesn't have a background in nutrition or renal disease. He is only guided by the suffering and affliction of some close friend. The recipes are quite similar to regular recipes you can download from the web. There are no substitutions like Splenda for sugar, Dash for sodium, egg substitutes for real eggs, and other nondairy product sustitutions, reduced phosphorus baking soda for baking soda, etc. Some of the meat dishes run up to 30 g of Protien per serving.I am not an expert but I have been told by my doctor that this will do a job on your liver.Take this book with a grain of salt (pun intended).
