4-0 out of 5 stars Good summary of various kidney diseases and treatments
Even though I am non-specialist in a field of nephrology, this book is not too difficult to read and understand. Also, this book has summarized various kidney diseases and respective treatment very well. But, as for thesection of transplant, I think this kind of book should provide moreinformation as like as the immunosuppress drugs which are underdevelopment. I beleive hope is the best therapy for patients with chronicdiseases. ... Read more

Book Description
This up-to-date electronic book on CD-ROM provides the best collection available anywhere of official Federal government information and documents on the subject of kidney disease, including: Kidney Failure, End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD), Kidney Dialysis, Transplantation, Polycystic Kidney Disease. (Kidney stones, and kidney cancer, are covered by other titles in this series.) This CD-ROM uses next-generation search technology that allows complete indexing and makes all files on the disc fully searchable. For patients, practical information is provided in clearly written patient education documents. For medical professionals, doctor reference tools and texts have detailed technical information and clinical background material.

This thoroughly researched collection presents vital information from many authoritative sources: National Institutes of Health (NIH), Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the Combined Health Information Database (CHID), the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK). Contents include clinical and medical information, with information on signs, symptoms, testing, diagnosis, treatment, and more.

In addition, as a bonus we have included an encyclopedic collection of general medical and health documents - thousands of pages with extensive material from the NIH on hundreds of diseases and health topics from A to Z, along with government consumer healthcare tips, disease prevention programs, dietary guidelines, and travelers' health information. Since navigating the Internet to find additional non-governmental medical information can be confusing, we've also provided our exclusive "Guide to Leading Medical Websites" with updated links to 73 of the best sites for medical information! By using weblinks on the CD-ROM, you can quickly check for the latest clinical updates directly from the government.

This CD-ROM has over 46,000 pages reproduced using Adobe Acrobat PDF software and Reader software is included. Advanced search and indexing features are built into our reproduction, providing a complete full-text index. This enables the user to search all the files on the disk at one time for words or phrases using just one search command! The Acrobat cataloging technology adds enormous value and uncommon functionality to this impressive collection of government documents and material. There is no other reference that is as fast, convenient, comprehensive, and portable!

Our CD-ROMs are privately-compiled collections of official public domain U.S. government files and documents - they are not produced by the federal government. They are designed to provide a convenient user-friendly reference work, utilizing the benefits of the Acrobat format to uniformly present thousands of pages that can be rapidly reviewed or printed without untold hours of tedious searching and downloading. This book-on-a-disc makes a superb reference work and educational tool for patients and their families, physicians, and other medical professionals. Editorial Review

Book Description
The most common reason for a renal consult in a hospitalized patient is acute renal failure (ARF). This new companion book to Brenner and Rector's THE KIDNEY provides the reader with the complete information necessary to understand, diagnose, and treat this serious and challenging condition. The first part of the book describes recent progress in the understanding of the pathophysiology of ARF, explaining the tremendous strides in the molecular and cellular aspects of cell injury and recovery. The remainder (and majority) of the text emphasizes the clinical spectrum and management of the different disease processes causing ARF. In these chapters, ARF is discussed in terms of its many associated disease processes such as pigment nephropathy, burns, infectious disease, and gastrointestinal and liver disease. This format allows for rapid referral and an in-depth understanding of all clinical aspects of ARF, including its most important aspect of management: to prevent the disease from becoming chronic, ultimately leading to dialysis and then transplantation. ... From the author: Reliable and valid tools are needed to assist nurses to prospectively identify high-risk patients with kidney failure. Early identification of high-risk patients permits targeting of nursing interventions and resources to improve quality and cost outcomes. A 16-item risk assessment tool, Risk for Outcomes Adverse to Dialysis (ROAD), was developed based on a comprehensive review of the literature on risk factors associated with adverse outcomes with kidney failure. Reliability and validity of the ROAD was tested on a random sample of 253 participants in the Anemia Management Demonstration Project. High risk scores on the ROAD were significantly associated with hospitalization 1 to 6 months following risk assessment and inversely correlated with physical and mental components of quality of life. The results indicate that the ROAD provides a useful tool to identify patients on hemodialysis at risk of poor outcomes.
