5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding textbook, gain something new everytime I read it
Must have for anyone interested in MSK, worth every penny.

4-0 out of 5 stars Radiology residents needed a book like this.
If you like the Requisites series of texts, this book is for you. Let's face it, the average radiology resident can't wade through Stoller or Berquist and expect to remember much. This book takes musculoskeletal MR and breaks it down into a Requisites-format book of manageable length. Boxes indicating "key points" abound, and the pictures are of high quality. The length is appropriate for an introductory MSK MR rotation.

On the minus side, the book is definitely not an exhaustive reference text. The knee chapter is relatively short, especially given the huge volumes of knee MRs radiologists are seeing. Also, the authors are a bit too opinionated about which sequences to use in some chapters - a more evidence-based and less anecdotal approach to tailoring exams would have been more useful.

Overall, highly recommended for radiology residents who are encountering MSK MR for the first time.

4-0 out of 5 stars The missing link
This is a very good text especially for the cost.

True to the authors intentions, the text presents practical aspects of interpreting musculoskeletal magnetic resonance studies. The text is perfectly suited to radiology residents, fellows and radiologists interpreting routine mri's. Essential technical information including suggestions for protocols are provided as well as an organized approach to interpretation.

I liked the sequence of normal descriptions immediately followed by associated pathology. There were sufficient images of excellent quality. Illustrations and diagrams are well thought out and "boxes" with core information are also present for those of us who just want the essential list! Definitely an easily read text. One should realize that this, however, is not a reference text! A musculoskeletal radiologist or individual with special interest in this area will likely find this too superficial. But the authors intentions are not to replace Resnick or Stoller's excellent reference texts.

Bottom line is I definitely recommend it for the price because it fills the gap between an intro book and the heavy duty texts just as it intends to...it is the missing link. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Resource
In preparation for a future career in genetic counselling, I asked for this volume on my 16th birthday. Admittedly, it is a strange request for a teenager, but it has proved to be a great resource of information. I'm now in a work-study program, and thanks in no small part to studying this book, I can hold my own in conversations about Kabuki, CHARGE or Waardenburg Syndromes.

I highly recommend this book for preprofessionals who are interested in pursuing a career in clinical medicine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb Resource
This is the best book about congenital malformations available for general pediatricians. It is highly accessible and fairly easy to use. It really helps one put together a differential diagnosis for children with dysmorphic features. The price makes it a bargain that should be in every general pediatric clinic.

I do have one suggested improvement: This book is perfect for conversion into a searchable CD-ROM so that one could simply key in the list of features and get back a list of possible syndromes ranked by likelihood.

1-0 out of 5 stars very incomplete home reference
Based on the good reviews I read on this site, I purchased the book. Consequently, I am making my first ever return of a purchase to Amazon.com. It certainly did not live up to my expectations -- I wanted a pediatric home reference I could turn to in the middle of the night. Like for the common childhood ailments that don't need emergency treatment or a doctor's attention.
There's barely any suggestions for home remedies-- e.g., how to make your child more comfortable at night when he has a cold. Instead, practically everything my husband and I looked up suggested "Consult your pediatrician." Moreover, the symptoms are discussed in such a limited fashion, what are you supposed to do if it's something in between-- or just one and not the other? Le me guess--- consult your pediatrician.
It was so infuriating until we realized that it was produced by the American Academy of Pediatrics-- so now it looks to us like they're promoting the business or something. I will continue searching for an adequate home reference. Something I can turn to during the times when CLEARLY I don't need to call 911 or call the pediatrician.

4-0 out of 5 stars ANSWERS FOR ANXIOUS PARENTS
Why does my newborn baby scream every night? Why won't my baby sleep in her crib? Why does she spit up at every feeding? Breast or bottle - which is best?
When a parent needs an answer, often it is when no one is available to answer. The middle of the night is no time to ponder whether or not your baby has an ear infection. Use this handbook as a resource for help and comfort as you try to navigate the complex channels of parenthood. The book provides timely advice and information on the most common baby questions, including great info on what to expect and how-to's for new parents, grandparents and caregivers. Keep a copy in the nursery, you'll reach for it often.
Your baby did not come with a set of instructions -- this handbook is the next best thing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Reference!
I can't tell you how many times I have referenced this book in the middle of the night. It has been a tremendous source of comfort. I like the reference format with the grid of symptoms. The only thing that could make this better would be pictures of what rashes (like the trademark bullseye of a Lyme's disease-infected tick bite or a chicken pox mark) look like. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have for nights on-call in the NICU!
This book, particularly the new 5th edition (released in August, 2003) is a must-have for on-call nights in the NICU. Although not as complete in terms of information as a full textbook, this book contains a blurb on nearly every topic one might encounter in the NICU. It is also surprisingly up to date for a textbook, containing the latest standards of care on controversial topics such as PPHN, use of ECMO and BPD, plus lots of other conditions.

This is no longer a spiral-bound book, which has positives and negatives. On the positive side, it's probably more durable long-term - no more ripping of pages and holes out of the spiral. On the negative side, it's harder to keep your page open without bending the spine out of shape.

This is by far the best on-call reference manual for neonatology. It's highly recommended by everyone I speak with, from staff to fellows to residents. I would recommend it as well!

5-0 out of 5 stars Always helpfull
All informations which are needed to work at an neonatal intensive care unit are in this book.
The chapters are clearly organized and the text is structured strictly to ensure that information can be quickly found.
Hopefully there will be anew edition soon.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nicely done concise reference for the on-call physician.
This is a nicely written, well organized quick reference text for the practicing physician, or resident in training. I was impressed by the amount of clearly presented practical information. Definitely a good book to check for a quick suggestion for response to a clinical situation. I wish there had been a book like this one when I was a resident. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for anyone suffering from IC, Chrons or IBS
What a wonderful book! Like so many with UC & Crohn's, we were told diet played no part in the onset of the disease in our 17-year-old daughter. The diagnosis was a shocker - she was always so healthy! We started the diet as a family 5 months after the diagnosis - my husband discovered his own IBS drastically improved, and our daughter cut meds to very low dose. Every time she's "cheated" on this diet for extended periods she's had a flare - each one more major that the last. Yes, it's hard to stick to it - she's in college now and has to pass up the hamburgers, fries, pizza, pasta, cheesecake, etc, that all her friends are eating. I don't know if she'll have to stick to it all her life - I just know she spent 11 weeks of her senior year in high school out sick - 9 days in the hospital being fed interveineously, after losing 30 lbs. - and the doctor talking of removing her colon or putting her on IMURAN. Read this book - if you care enough about yourself to stick to this diet, it may change your life!

5-0 out of 5 stars This book saved my young daughter's health !
When my daughter was diagnosed with a severe case of Crohn's disease at the age of only 11, doctors told us that the only way to wrest control of this inflammatory bowel disease was to put her on large doses of steroids and immune-suppressing drugs. Knowing that steroids can cause children's bones to thin and their growth to be delayed (as well as weight gain and other unpleasant and dangerous side effects), my husband and I were determined, if possible, to find another way to help our child back to health. What we found was "Breaking the Vicious Cycle,"a wonderful, easy-to-read and to understand book whose eating plan has literally saved our daughter's health.

Using the book's informational sections as background and its recipes as marching orders, we completely changed the way our family was eating. Out went anything with sugar, grains, additives, colorings, preservatives and lactose; in came fresh and cooked fruits and vegetables, wonderful, homemade yogurt and frozen yogurt; lean fish, foul, pork and red meat; nuts; seeds; butter and honey.

Within two weeks, our daughter -- formerly too sick to attend school and bleeding internally -- began to feel better. Within a month, she was almost symptom-free. Today -- six months later -- she hardly remembers she has Crohn's.

To say that our family is grateful to Elaine Gottschall for writing this book is a vast understatement. I urge anyone suffering from Crohn's or other IBD to buy the book , to study its premise, and to put it into action. The life you save may be your own -- or your child's!

5-0 out of 5 stars This diet gave me back my health
I should have written this review years ago, but I guess it's not too late. Here's my experience:
After months of suffering GI problems, I was finally diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis in the fall of 1996. The specialist wanted to put me on a couple of pharmaceuticals, but I wasn't interested in taking such toxic drugs, so I declined the pills but agreed to use Cortenema. But my condition continued to worsen and I developed other strange symptoms.

Researching on the internet, I found out about several alternative treatments and some recommended books. I bought three books including "Breaking the Vicious Cycle." In the end, I decided to go with the Specific Carbohydrate Diet and started on it in early December of 1996. When I started, I weighed 90 lbs., was extremely weak and could barely get out of bed. Amazingly, after only about three days on the diet, most of my major symptoms disappeared, and the rest went away within two to three weeks. In short, the SCD pulled me back from pain, suffering, a state of wasting away, and feeling that I was just slowly dying.

I lost some more weight at the beginning of the diet, but I continued to stick to the diet, and as my GI tract slowly healed, I began to gain back the weight and energy. By May 1997 I was back all the way. During follow ups, my doctor was surprised that I was doing so well without any medication, but he wasn't interested in hearing about the diet I was following . Today, years since I first started, I look and feel just fine. The only times that I've had a relapse is when I have "cheated" by ingesting something that is forbidden on the diet. I have learned much in all these years and been in contact with others on this diet. It works, as long as it is followed to the letter. And contrary to what some reviewers have written here, this diet is not about what you should eat, but about *what not to eat* in order to get well. There's plenty of choice for all types of foods, for a well balanced and healthy diet.

I have given this book five stars just because the SCD diet is such a life-saver. But I have to be honest -- as far as books go, this one could have used a good editor to help with the writing style and organization of the book. And the recipes in the book are not quite ready for primetime (thank goodness for all the SCD websites and support groups on the net!). These are minor quibbles, but such things bother me. Other than that, I recommend this book and the diet to everyone who suffers from any type of digestive disorder. You have nothing to lose -- you can even read the book at the library. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Mr. Senneff offers HOPE for those suffering from neuropathy
This book is easy to read, well written and chockful of helpful information. I purchased it at a diabetes seminar, raced home and quickly read it. I was thrilled to find so much well-researched info on neuropathy in one book especially since my efforts at finding info on this painful, debilitating disease had previously yielded nothing helpful. I'm reading it again with my marker in hand as I will continue to use this book as an important reference in my search for help.

If you suffer from neuropathy, do yourself a favor and get this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Numb Toes and Aching Soles by John Senneff
A self-help book for people who suffer from peripheral neuropathy is very necessary, and this book is an excellent beginning, but there are some unfortunate holes in its coverage. Since doctors rarely volunteer information, it is important to know what questions to ask, and in this disease there are many questions to ask, since what works for one person might not work for another. There is apparently a great deal of ongoing medical research activity that might produce significant results in the near future; a strength of the book is the pointers that it gives to discussion groups and other sources of the latest information.

On the negative side (perhaps a revised edition is in the works?): 1) thyroid deficiency should really be added to the list of the notable (and treatable) causes (see, for example, American Family Physician, 1998, 57(4):755-766); 2) The section on alpha-lipoic acid has this vitamin-like molecule (C8H14O2S2, found in greatest abundance in meat) totally confounded with the essential fatty acid alpha-linolenic acid (C18H30O2, for which flax oil is a popular supplement). Another small section that would improve the book is a discussion of the probable causes of B-vitamin deficiency, for example antiulcer medications (Journal of Clinical Epidemiology, 2001, 54(5):531-534).

4-0 out of 5 stars Powerful and Entertaining
After I read Griffin's "The Creature from Jekyll Island" (an amazing book), I had to read this one too. I was not disappointed - It is amazing to think that something this important has been downplayed, undermined, and relegated to the realms of quackery by conventional establishment-medicine.

It should be no surprise to any of us that the modern era has pushed us all into some highly unnatural living conditions. Nitrogen-farming, sedentary lifestyles, our neighbors are complete strangers, hours of unmeaningful interaction with our beloved televisions (and internet). World Without Cancer taps into this modern-day insanity with a straightforward argument that cancer is the result of nutritional deficiencies. Even if this premise is overly-simplistic, it's a viewpoint that everyone should consider. Personally, I think Griffin and company are onto something significant.

The only reason this book gets 4 stars instead of 5 is that most of the research listed on the topic is from the 60s and 70s. In the world of cancer research and microbiology, 30-40 yrs ago was the dark ages compared to the advances made since that time, as noted by my brother who holds a PhD in Microbiology (who also read the book). This is not to say that the research Griffin lists is incorrect or faulty, but I feel like Griffin needs to update the book to reflect Laetrile research done in the last 20 years. It's true that Laetrile's time under consideration and scrutiny occured 30 years ago in the States, but surely more research has been done in other countries where it is legally used and accepted (including countries in Western Europe). I would like to see Mr. Griffin give this book a major overhaul.

Regardless, it's a great book, and written about a topic that will undoubtedly affect all of our lives at one point, sooner or later.

5-0 out of 5 stars Only for those who TRULY desire to be cancer-free...
This book has changed my entire perspective about cancer, medicine, politics, and big business. No one needs any longer to become victim to the ravages of cancer, traditional cancer treatments and the greed of the cancer industry. This 2 part book first gives the layman an insiders powerful understanding about cancer from the earliest pioneers and heros of cancer research to the practical cancer-free life available today. Second, this well-documented expose of the billion dollar cancer industry will leave chills running down your spine. Finally, the author's quick and rivoting style effortlessly engages the reader - leaving no excuse for anyone to ignorantly fall prey to the deadly deception of cancer conmen!

5-0 out of 5 stars I have my life back!
Thanks to "Eating For IBS", I am once again a normal person. As soon as I began using her eating strategy, a miracle transpired - my IBS symptoms disappeared entirely! Now her easy orange miso avocado & cucumber salad has become a favorite along with her cinnamon zucchini bread and many other tasty dishes. Her international "ethnic" cuisine assures great variety and zest. Heather's book is intelligently written in easy to understand language and very informative. She has created a simple yet comprehensive guide on how to eat absolutely delicious meals that actually stabilized my colon immediately. Her strategy of substituting safe foods for "trigger" foods makes sense and really works. I finally understand how my vegetarian diet of fresh fruits, vegetables and whole wheat were causing attacks. I was also consuming more than two entire packages of FiProFlax fiber a week (...) to control my IBS without much success because it is insoluble fiber! Doctors never told me that there were two kinds of fiber and that I needed to eat the soluble kind. But because Heather makes this very clear distinction, I have my life back. I highly recommend her book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best treatment against IBS
.
I'm one of the many persons whose life was changed by reading Heather's book on Eating for IBS.

I've been following the book's recipes and tips for 6 months now and feel I have regained control over my health and my body. I have also rediscovered the joys of cooking and eating because it is the first time in twenty years I can eat food that will not leave me with the sad feeling that I've eaten the wrong thing again.

I've got several books on IBS and constantly scan the Web for novelties but on top of the delicious recipes it contains, this book also provides the most comprehensive list of trigger foods, alternative ingredients, and solutions I've seen so far. It has opened my eyes about the dangers of several foods, namely egg yolks, fructose, and insoluble fiber. I have also followed links to some recommended products from other companies, peppermint capsules and hypnotherapy CDs, and these have had a great effect as well.

So Heather has changed my life, really, and I thank her from the bottom of my heart.
.

5-0 out of 5 stars Counterinuitive -- but brilliant
In these days of low-carb mania, it's a real mind-bender to consider that red meat, butter, whole eggs, raw veggies and whole wheat bread might be bad for you -- and that white rice, white bread, and white pasta might actually be good. But for IBS sufferers (at least those like me, with diarrhea-predominant symptoms and lots of gas/bloating) this can indeed be the case. Following Heather's basic strategies has provided wonderful relief in a matter of days -- after months of invasive tests, ineffective medications, and futile advice from docs. Her explanation of the differing effects of soluble and insoluble fiber on IBS sufferers is the key to this diet, and many will find that they can add back "forbidden" foods to some degree after getting their gut stabilized. Who would have thought that eating things in a specific order (like eating the starch before the salad!) could actually have an effect on gut spasms? But for me, that's exactly the case.

The author's sage advice about various fiber supplements and their individual characteristics would be worth the purchase price. (Reviewers who complained that her diet doesn't work for IBS with constipation must not be following her advice about incorporating fiber supplements; I don't see how they could possibly remain blocked up under the regime she outlines.) On top of that, the recipes are great. I love food and cooking and had despaired of ever having fun in the kitchen again -- always worried that what I was putting in my mouth was going to cause great suffering an hour or two later. Playing around with Heather's recipes has brought back the old thrill, and it's stuff the whole family can eat without suspecting it's some kind of special diet. The book is also packed with many interesting and tasty items you'd enjoy serving to guests.

If you're wondering about whether all these reviews can possibly be "for real," or if this is just some stupid and possibly dangerous fad diet -- take the chance and buy this book. The recommendations are healthful, the diet's not going to hurt you, and you have nothing to lose except the hours of suffering currently caused by your IBS. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Oxygen Therapy Book on the Planet.
This Book Rocks!

His first book blew me away, this one had me up all night reading it. The information is just mind-boggling.

Ed McCabe is The Oxygen Guru in the oxygen therapy world. There isn't another like him and he certainly derserves the title. His discoveries are amazing and so is his delivery.

You will find answers to health problems that absolutely no other book can show you. I applied it and it got me well. I was so sick that I just didn't want to go on living. Flood Your Body with Oxygen showed me the most basic cause of disease. It works.

I have never felt fitter or healthier or happier in my entire life and I wish I had taken notice of what to do sooner. It would haved saved years of misery and pain.

Rock on McCabe. I take my hat off to you.

5-0 out of 5 stars HIV and ozone therapy
I have just completed my second reading of Flood Your Body with Oxygen, by Ed McCabe, and I found the book to be enlightening in all respects.

As an AIDs sufferer who is not on the protease cocktails, I have been searching for a means to end my HIV infection, and I believe ozone therapy is the answer. In a couple of weeks I will have completed 4 months on ozone therapy and, hopefully will be HIV free. For the past two months I've given myself daily IV injections of medical grade ozone.

Since beginning the oxygen therapy my secondary AIDS related infections have all but disappeared, and I will get my quarterly blood test results in a couple of weeks. The proof will be in the pudding as they say.

Mr. McCabe's book is written for the layman and is easily understandable by all. It is not a technical treatise, but a simple, instructive guide for anyone who wants better health without the use of prescription drugs.

I highly recommend this book and its many oxygen therapies... DeCourcy Orrick

5-0 out of 5 stars rare and important research
This book distills the research of Weston A. Price, a dentist and independent nutrition researcher. In a decade of travel around the world, Price and his wife studied the health, dietary habits, and chemical composition of food of dozens of traditional peoples of various racial backgrounds. His research was done at a time when many such groups still lived free of the influence of Western civilization and what he called "foods of commerce," i.e. heavily refined and denatured foods.

One could question whether 60 plus year old research is relevant today, but I found his work powerful and persuasive for a very simple reason.

Health problems sent me on a quest to find the best dietary information, but I soon found myself mired in contradictory claims, opposing research and special interest groups, as well as outright deceit. First I would read about how one vitamin or mineral was good for this. Then I would read that the very same item was bad for that. You shouldn't combine X with Y, or needed to add tons of Z or W, except on Sundays when the moon was almost 3/4 full. I became very disillusioned with the incredible complexity of nutrition. As I read more and more deeply, I also became annoyed at all the disinformation and profiteering behind much of the so-called research.

I reached this bottom line: While we understand proteins, carbs, and fats reasonably well, and have a pretty good handle on most vitamins and about a dozen minerals, there is simply an immense amount we just don't know. We are researching minerals at about 5 per decade (around 50 to go - a hundred more years at our current rate). There are around 5000 enzymes in bee pollen alone, and few of them have been researched. There are an unknown number of phytochemicals and other things we have yet to discover that have been constituents of our food for perhaps millions of years. Science moves very slowly, and it could easily be several hundred or 1000 years before we get it all sorted out. And that doesn't take into consideration the power groups who insist on muddying the waters for profit's sake. Modern science is quite obviously incapable of giving us complete answers to our nutritional questions. It just plain doesn't have them to give, nor will it for a long, long time.

Then I found Price's work. Basically, he was the Tony Robbins of diet - he sought out the healthiest people on Earth and studied what they had done for hundreds and thousands of years to stay healthy. He looked at their Traditional diets as well as what happened when they adopted Western diets. The results are in this book, and it is well worth your taking the time to read. While others have followed his work, the changing nature of the world now make it impossible to duplicate his research today. His work stands as a pivotal piece in science and health as well as in history. This represents the cumulative knowledge of millions of people over thousands of years in a laboratory that includes the entire world. Definitely non-trivial.

There are also books by Ronald Schmid and Sally Fallon that introduce and give overviews of Price's work. I recommend them also. Today, when we must all become advocates for our own health, arming yourself with the best information is vital.

5-0 out of 5 stars A man way ahead of his time
I recently read a summary from a report covering functional foods released by the Boston Consulting Group where the statement was made that there "is increasing scientific evidence of a diet health link".

The primitive peoples studied by Weston Price knew that long ago. Their diets were finely tuned in with their genetic inheritance accumulated over tens of thousands of years of evolution.

Over the past 100 years or so, that inheritance has largely been either ignored or forgotten. We now have diets based on far too many food products which are not in tune with our genetic requirements. Minerals and vitamins, along with other complex natural components, are refined or "farmed" out of many foods.

We live longer but do we live more healthily? The huge increases in lifestyle related diseases (obesity, heart disease, diabetes etc.)and psychiatric problems suggest that is not the case.

Weston Price was an amazing man who saw and understood the cost of this deviation in our nutritional patterns from our inherited path. The old adage "one picture is worth a thousand words" is particularly applicable to this book. The photo records have an inestimable value for all time.

This book is as relevant today as it was when first published in 1939.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book I have ever read.
This is not just a book about nutrition, although even in that ambit it is the best of its kind ever published.

This is a book about mankind, human progress, the evil of capitalism, social harmony, the roots of crime, the foundation of happiness.

If what Weston Price had alarmingly brought to our attention in the 1930s about the foods we should not eat had been followed, the people in this world now would be healthy, happy and in harmony. Instead we have a society where 95% are overweight, 60% have vitamin/mineral deficiencies, almost every child need orthodontia, 80% do no daily exercise, etc, etc, etc.

Why has this happened? Capitalism. That creed based on providing us maximally seductive food based on sugar, additives, flour, trans fat, in huge quantities, aggressively marketed to ensure maximum profit to the corporation ( but in the process destroying our health). What a way for human society to run itself! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars an owner's manual
As a nurse practitioner who specializes in women's health, I was very excited to see this book. So many problems that I see in my daily practice are addressed in this book, along with very practical suggestions for preventing them. It should be required reading for every woman in her twenties to learn what to and not to do in terms of routine maintenance of her "private parts". This book also addresses common and uncommon concerns for women of all ages and stages of life. I have in the past referred patients to Dr. Stewart's office for women whose problems have baffled the best minds in my group, and have been impressed with the evaluation, management and followup of these individuals, and have been impressed with the care that they have received from Dr. Stewart and her colleagues. I now keep a copy of this book on my desk and recommend it to most of my patients!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for women and OB/GYN clinicians
I am a nurse practitioner in Obstetrics and Gynecology and was thrilled to read "The V Book" by Elizabeth Stewart. This book is nothing sort of a gem, and provides in an easy-to-read format all the details of "everything you ever wanted to know about 'down there' but were afraid to ask." The information has been impeccably researched and is presented in a very balanced format. The drawings of female anatomy are beautiful and realistic and make it easy for women to identify areas of the vagina and vulva.

I have practiced in the Boston area and know many women who have been referred to Dr. Stewart's clinic. They have been extremely pleased with their care, and in many cases have had long-standing and difficult problems resolved. I am grateful that Dr. Stewart's wisdom and experience are now available both to women and to the clinicians who provide them with their gynecologic care.

It is clear that Dr. Stewart is deeply committed to helping women obtain quality health care. If you are a woman experiencing a GYN health issue, this book will provide you with the facts you need to understand the nature of your problem, to ask good questions of your health care provider, and to determine if the care you are receiving is effective and appropriate. Every conceivable topic regarding a women's gynecologic health is covered in a thorough manner, and it is done so with both accuracy and sensitivity.

5-0 out of 5 stars What your doctor/school/mother didn't tell you about YOU
Ladies, this book is excellent reading for every one of us. Written by a doctor who is not only a gynecologist but also that rare breed, the vulvovaginal specialist, it is -- as another reviewer suggested -- the owner's manual for everyone with a vulva, vestibule, and vagina. If you're not sure exactly what I mean by those last three terms, you need to find out, and Dr. Elizabeth Stewart -- the author of this book -- is the one to tell you.

Not only does Dr. Stewart cover what we've got, why we shouldn't be ashamed of it, and how it works, she gives in-depth, readable information on vulvovaginal infections, imbalances, and other problems, tells you how they can be treated, and enumerates interactions and complications for women with special needs (i.e. they're pregnant, HIV positive, etc.) She separates myths from facts and has the data and experience to prove what she says. She also goes over the ideal visit to your GYN, and lets you know what questions you should ask, what tests you should request when, and how to choose the best clinician to meet your needs.

All in all, this book is not only excellent but ESSENTIAL to a woman's library. It's light, clear reading, and it may be the most empowering book you read all year. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Just Like My Mom Said, Heal Yourself From The Inside Out
Two and a half years ago, my daughter and I were diagnosed with a mild case of eczema. I went looking for natural remedies. I was attracted to the title of this book as well as the photos on the back. It looked like the patches on my face and arms. I saw that there was a chapter on eczema as well. I followed the diet recommendations for Psoriasis and it didn't take long to notice the difference. I did the 3 day diet and made revisions for my daughter to benefit because she couldn't do it fully (she only weights 99 lbs). I also made lotions and body oils with the peanut oil Dr. Pagano suggested and other herbs. Along with the diet change, the peanut oil mix just seemed to lift off the dried reddened skin and reveal healthy skin. After I washed it off I didn't see the patches as clearly and after about 2 months, they were not even red anymore. All I could see was the darkened skin where they once were, then that evened out with lots of cocoa & shea butter. If it wasn't for this book, I'd still be wearing a ton of foundation make-up and ashamed to show off my skin in the summer and I'd be embarrassed whenever someone looked at the patches on my face. I was always afraid that they could see under the make-up. Our skin is smooth and clear now. No more itching and no more red patches. Thank you Dr. Pagano. ~Blu

5-0 out of 5 stars A True Miracle
I'm not sure what else to say about this book that hasn't been said. If you have psoriasis, you owe it to yourself to give it a try. It's not easy to change diet habits, but you will feel so much better. I did not have the quick results, it took about 4 months for me to clear and the condition got worse before better (as the book states). I recommend identifying a friend to help you with support. I know I would have given up without it. But the diet will work if given time. I only wish I would have taken pictures before and after because sometimes I don't believe it myself. It's been about 6 months now, and I cheat a little, but stay away from the nightshades. I remain 90% clear, I've lost weight (not a bad side effect), and I feel much healthier. I owe Dr. Pagano for giving me back my self confidence.

5-0 out of 5 stars You are what you eat and this book proves it !!!!!!
I've been plagued with this disease for almost 7 years now and have 50% of my body covered with sores. I have been to the Cleveland Clinic and many other doctors searching for relief. After great expense, I was no better off afterwards than before, sometimes in worse shape. I have tried EVERYTHING to get rid of of this to no avail!!!!!

When I came to this book I was doubtful but like every other suffer desperate for relief, I forwarded the link to my wife and she bought the book. I have been doing this for almost a week now and I am starting to see the results, even though I haven't followed it to a "T". Yeah the teas are horrible, but other than that it is not bad - better than the disease. So if you are also plagued with Psoriasis, I HIGHLY recommend this book and the lifestyle change it promotes. Yes I miss my steak and potatoes, but that's life - time to move on.

As for the one review that states it all stress related, this individual surely doesn't have psoriasis. I am a Network Administrator and my day is nothing but stress filled, like almost every other American out there, but yet I am healing.

I eat more fruits and veggies than ever before, drink my water, eat my fish and chicken, salads, drink my teas (YUCK) and almost all other things recommended - sorry I'm not perfect - but it is working.

So in summary when your momma said you are what you eat - believe her - GOD gave her wisdom - just follow it and eat right. I'll do a follow up review in 3 months, prayerfully I will continue to heal and be done with this once and for all. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Super-researched fungal-cancer link
This is the most definitive book I have ever read on the subject of the link between cancer and fungi. It is well thought out and superbly researched. Kaufmann and Dr. Beverly Hunt know what they are talking about.

To help put this book into practice, Dr. Hunt has a companion cookbook that I would highly recommend (find it on eBay) called "LifeChange Cookbook, Low-Carbohydrate Essentials for Conquering Fungal Infection" by Beverly T. Hunt and Virginia O'Brien.

I highly recommend them both.

5-0 out of 5 stars A TRULY EYE OPENING THEORY!
My sister bought this book and I thought she was crazy for paying so much for it; but I took it away from her and read it first!!! I wasn't done yet before I went out and gladly paid the price for my own copy!!! This book is truly worth twice the money! There are SO many things that this books pulls together; for health in general as well as for cancer. Since reading the book I have interviewed several cancer patients and have found out that the things pointed out in the book are actually true. They are also true to my experience, which might be cancer and might not. I am NOT going to the doctor to be poisoned and butchered to find out. But everything I've experienced hangs with what Doug says in this book, and with what cancer patients have told me, and I am trying the antifungal ideas set forth in this book...I heartily recommend this book to all, not just for cancer. As well as Doug's website, iknowthecause.com, and Dr. Mercola's website and free newsletter at mercola.com. (You won't find Doug's books in the used sections--I've tried. Apparently when people buy his books they never give them up!!!) Thank you to the people who are decent and honest and have integrity, and are trying to help us.

5-0 out of 5 stars DISABLED IN ACTION
Lucy has had to contend with cancer from a very early age. At 10, she undergoes surgery and follow-up treatments to remove a cancerous jaw. This unfortunately alters her appearance and Lucy has to live with the hostile stares, cruel comments and stupid remarks made by insensitive people.

Although Lucy uses the word "disabled," it is the opinion of this reviewer that Lucy was disabled in ACTION. As unfortunate as her health and appearance altering condition is, Lucy remains true to her core self. Bright, witty and extremely verbal, Lucy reminds the world at large of how character all too often is eclipsed by appearance. Lucy also inadvertently reminds all who have read this book that "able" is the core part of "disable" and that "dis" is simply a prefix. Therefore, she is more ABLE that disabled. That is a very affirming thought.

Lucy is truly an inspiration and gives a good reminder to ALL persons never to judge somebody based on physical appearance. In this book, Lucy is truly beautiful.

5-0 out of 5 stars I had Ewing's sarcoma & related to Lucy feeling all alone.
I read Lucy's book several years ago, all in one day. Her words, feelings, and thoughts captured my attention, as I fully understood her battle with cancer. I had Ewing's of the pelvis when I was 15, and there weren't any books that I read back then where the person lived at the end. How utterly depressing, since we are proof that you can survive cancer!

I greatly appreciated the way in which Lucy described what it felt like during chemo treatments and surgeries, because her interpretation is not glossed over. There is no real way to describe the experience except to go through it for yourself to really understand it, but Lucy's words came very close! One day, I wish to write my own novel describing my struggle with cancer as an adolescent.

I'd also love to talk with Lucy, one survivor to another, if possible.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book
As a person with hypothyroidism, I have read a dozen or more books specifically on thyroid disease over the last twenty years. In addition I have read approximately forty to fifty professional journal articles relating to hypothyroidism and depression. This was for me the best single source of information that I have found dealing with thyroid disease and depression; and it contains up to date information from a practitioner in the field.

Having read quite a bit about the subject, I am surprised by how many doctors I have spoken to, or read articles written by, that are very out of date in their knowledge of hypothyroidism. Many doctors don't seem to recognize the symptoms of hypothyroidism despite its prevalence in the US population. Most doctors still treat hypothyroidism with the "gold" standard" of levothyroxine (T4) alone, despite there being evidence that a combination of triiodthyronine (T3) and levothyroxine (T4) may work better in some specific cases. For depression, Dr Arem says that he often supplements antidepressant use with cytomel (T3) rather than levothyroxine because of the connection between the distribution of norepinephrine and T3 in the brain (chapter 6). This is in concurrence with what I have been able to find through my research efforts.

The mind-body connection in hypothyroidism is a complicated one, and I thought that Dr. Arem's handling of the subject was done admirably. There is evidence that depression and hypothyroidism can in some people have genetic origins. In some instances hypothyroidism might be caused by infectious agents (viruses). Hypothyroidism might also be induced by stressful events in a person life (chapter 1). All of these are covered at a level that can be understood with perhaps some work required for persons with a light science background.

There are many other areas covered in this book that I won't mention due to lack of space. These subjects include testing procedures (TSH, TRH, T3/T4, etc), and what they mean, finding and talking with your doctor, discussing your illness with your spouse, and infertility. Additionally there is a section on nutrition, diet, and exercise, which can help in hypothyroidism.

I would recommend this book whole-heartedly to anyone with hypothyroidism, depression, or who suspects that they may have thyroid disease.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent and Essential Reading
The Thyroid Solution provides a comprehensive description of the cognitive effects of thyroid disease. It is an excellent source of information for anyone with this disease as well as health care providers. T3, the biologically active form of thyroid hormone, is a brain chemical just like noradrenaline and dopamine. It is essential to the optimal function of your brain. I know what a difference it makes because as soon as I switched from T4 to the natural form of thyroid hormone (which contains T3 & T4) I immediately experienced the benefits. In my opinion there is no comparison between the two hormones.
I found this book very informative and purchased copies for several of my health care providers who either were unfamiliar with or had overlooked the numerous symptoms of hypothyroidism that I exhibited. Dr Ridha provides a great deal of information on both hyper and hypo thyroidism. But don't stop with this book, also make sure you read Dr Broda Barnes "Hypothyroidism the Unsuspected Illness" for a complete overview of the possible effects of low thyroid function. These two book are indispensible for anyone with thyroid disease or just interested in the effects of thyroid hormone in the body.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the thyroid book you'll re-read
When I was diagnosed with Grave's disease (hyperthyroid), I read several books on thyroid function. This book is by far the most complete reference. The book explains in detail many of the subjects that other books gloss over. It also contains the most complete discussion of T3 that I've seen.

Now that I'm taking anti-thyroid medication and I've reached a stable level, I'm still reading the book and finding out things I wasn't told. For example, 50% of people gain weight when they start taking anti-thyroid drugs. This would have been helpful for me to know.

For how common thyroid problems are, there seems to be a real problem with correct diagnosis and treatment. In a world of managed care, you need the information in this book. ... Read more
