Product Description

Experts have yet to reach consensus about what a learning disability is, how to determine if a child has one, and what to do about it. Leading researcher and clinician Deborah Waber offers an alternative to the prevailing view of learning disability as a problem contained within the child. Instead, she shows how learning difficulties are best understood as a function of the developmental interaction between the child and the world. Integrating findings from education, developmental psychology, and cognitive neuroscience, she offers a novel approach with direct practical implications. Detailed real-world case studies illustrate how this approach can promote positive outcomes for children who struggle in school.

This brand-new book was written primarily for parents and teachers of high school students who suffer from learning difficulties that stem from a variety of different causes. 5-0 out of 5 stars A Masterful Resource
Mather, Wendling, and Roberts have done a masterful job of creating this comprehensive resource for the assessment and remediation of the difficulties of the struggling writer. The authors use clear, accurate, and precise language to present overviews of the separate components of written language followed by techniques for informally assessing the difficulties the struggling writer reveals in his/her writing. They then follow this clear understanding of the problem with instructional plans that address the specific weaknesses. All of this is illustrated with real examples from real students. This is a must-have desk reference for all professionals and parents who work with developing writers. If I were Oprah, I would have the authors on the show and place this book under each seat.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must have for teachers of writing!!
This book is an invaluable resource to anyone who is working with struggling writers. Not only does it address critical assessment questions in a clear and logical manner, but it also provides practical suggestions for intervention. Because the authors don't presume the reader has much background, this book is appropriate and useful to beginning teachers. However, because of the wealth of activites, the book is equally useful to experieinced instructors. It is a must-have for anyone who wants to assist struggling writers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Acclaim for Writing Assessment
In their book, Writing Assessment and Instruction for Students with Learning Disabilities, the authors have provided a thorough approach to assessment and remediation for those students who find writing a formidable challenge. Not only does this text address the reason for referral question for psychologists, neuropsychologists, teachers and diagnosticians, it also takes on the important next step, answering the "so what?" or the "so what are we going to do about it?" question for remediation. It should have wide appeal to parents who home-school their children, parents who assist in their child's homework, regular education teachers in writing lesson plans and special education teachers who write goals and objectives in written expression. As a school psychologist with 35 years of experience, I find this text is a much needed resource that I will use and recommend for assessments and remedial strategies in my practice. As special educators, may we be forever mindful of the promise for struggling writers by the quote of Richard Bach: "A professional writer is an amateur who didn't quit."
With every good wish, Marshall Andrew Glenn, Ph.D., NCSP, American Board School-Neuropsychology, Oklahoma City University

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource for School Psychs and Special Educators Alike
Writing Assessment and Instruction for Students with Learning Disabilities is a comprehensive and practical look at improving written language for all students. The instructional ideas cover every aspect of written language that a student may have difficulty with including handwriting, spelling, usage, vocabulary, and text structure. As a school psychologist, I find this text to be extremely useful in writing recommendations that are both realistic for classroom use and tailored to an individual student's needs. In addition, I found the chapters on assessment of writing to be especially helpful in taking my assessment of a student's skills beyond a Standard Score to a deeper level of analysis that pinpoints the areas in which a student struggles or excels the most.I would highly recommend this book to anyone who works with struggling writers!

5-0 out of 5 stars Invaluable for every teacher's toolbox of resources
Mather, Wendling and Roberts have written an invaluable writing assessment and instruction resource manual for teachers. As a 20 year special education teacher, I often struggled with how to effectively and efficiently assess written language skills in my students to yield valuable information to inform instruction. As a university professor teaching assessment and intervention coursework to pre-service teachers, I prepare teachers who face the same dilemma in a context of increasing awareness of research-based interventions. Mather and her colleagues have developed a manual that guides K-12 teachers from the foundations of written language and handwriting, to assessment, accommodations, and research based interventions for students struggling with written language.Timely, informative, and accessible for undergraduate students and teachers alike - this book will be one of the required texts in my literacy assessment and intervention courses and is a must for every literacy teacher's toolbox of instructional resources.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for parents
I attended a seminar in reference to students going to college.I learned about this book at that time.Had I had the knowledge 4 years earlier, my son would not have suffered with all the struggling from his unidentified learning disabilities. This book really assists with knowledge about what these kids have to overcome.

5-0 out of 5 stars The misunderstood child
I read an earlier edition of this book borrowed from the library.I was pleased to see a new edition on Amazon.com which I purchased to give to my daughter-in-law.She has found it very helpful in understanding her children's and siblings' learning problems.

4-0 out of 5 stars Review of the BOOKnot the service
I have a copy of the previous edition and found it so helpful that I wanted the 4th edition. I am the mother of a child (now a grown man) with learning disabilities (experience has shown that it is never just one). I homeschooled for 7 years and am now a certified teacher for ESE students. I found the previous edition while "subbing" for another ESE teacher years ago. I have recommended this book to others because it is concise, easy to read and very helpful. I gave this book 4 stars instead of 5 because the author does tend to spend more time on ADD and ADHD. Still, the book has been "spot on" for many of the tendencies and traits I have found in many of my students and my own child and I have found the advice very helpful. I only wish that I had come in contact with this book earlier so that I could have helped my child more.

By the way, I have been ordering from Amazon for several years now and have never had a problem - knock on wood! :o) ... Read more

Product Description
Identification of Learning Disabilities: Research to Practice is the remarkable product of a learning disabilities summit conference convened by the Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP) in August 2001 and the activities following that summit. Both the conference and this book were seen as important preludes to congressional reauthorization of the historic Individuals With Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) scheduled for 2002 and subsequent decision making surrounding implementation. The OSEP conference brought together people with different perspectives on LD (parents, researchers, practitioners, and policymakers) and resulted in this book, which examines the research on nine key issues concerning the identification of children with learning disabilities. Coverage includes alternative responses to treatment, classification approaches, processing deficit models, and approaches to decision making.

Chapter Structure-- Each of the first nine chapters is organized around a lengthy, issue-oriented paper, which presents the most current research on that topic. These primary papers are then followed by four respondent papers that reflect a variety of viewpoints on the topic.

Summarizing Chapter -- A small group of researchers (listed in the final chapter) dedicated an enormous amount of time to summarizing the research and developing key consensus statements regarding the identification of children with learning disabilities. Their work is sure to have a tremendous impact on future discussions in this area.

Expertise-- The following well-known scholars have helped summarize the vast amount of research presented in this book as well as the consensus statements derived therefrom: Lynne Cook, Don Deshler, Doug Fuchs, Jack M. Fletcher, Frank Gresham, Dan Hallahan, Joseph Jenkins, Kenneth Kavale, Barbara Keogh, Margo Mastopieri, Cecil Mercer, Dan Reschley, Rune Simeonsson, Joe Torgesen, Sharon Vaughn, and Barbara Wise.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful guide!
I had the opportunity to hear the authors speak at a transitions conference last year. One of the things they said that really stuck with me is that the goal is not getting your kids into college, it's getting them out (ie. having them complete a degree program and turn that into a job). This guide is a wonderful resource for LD students and parents who are in the college search process.Yes, colleges are "required" to make appropriate and reasonable accomodations, but the reality is that services vary dramatically from one college to the next. For the LD student, these services can make or break their college experience. This guide will help you learn who to talk to, what questions to ask, and what to look for in a college for the LD student. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Practical, adaptable advice in easy-to-understand format
If I could have only one book on teaching writing, Writing Better: Effective Strategies For Teaching Students With Learning Difficulties would be that book. Steve Graham and Karen Harris not only can research, but they also can write with clarity, flair, and humor.

Any teacher or homeschooler who wants students to be more independent can profit from their strategies for enabling students to learn to monitor their own performance.

The research and strategies Graham and Harris discuss were primarily tested at the middle school level. However, I have used them successfully at the college level with students who were not learning disabled. The authors' recommendations are practical, down-to-earth, and clear enough that any anyone can use and adapt them to a wide range of student populations. They need not be limited to special education.

4-0 out of 5 stars one of the better books I have found yet
this is a very simple easy to read book on learning disabilities every parent should have a copy or borrow one from the library. another great one to have on hand is from emotions to advocate by pam and peter wright

5-0 out of 5 stars I Have Not Read This Book.....But
I would not be so quick to assume that this book does not have some highly valuable information that would not typically be found in the typical 'disability' book.(Sorry - I was forced to give a rating - so I opted togive it a (5) to average out the above (1).Hope that's okay.)I wouldthink that it would not attempt to cover LD's in the 'in-depth' manner theabove reader expected, but rather to concentrate more on the day-to-dayissues that most parents wrestle with; at home, at school, with neighbors, with friends and extended family, etc.The issues reach far and wide, andare highly complicated. In reference to the legal aspects, this is onlyone small part of the overall picture. And regardless of how the law isstated - it still must be carried out, before the child benefits.IDEA 97is there, in place, ready to use.Do the schools follow it?No.Thequestion then becomes, 'What does a parent do?How should they handle it? How can they fight the system and win - and yet benefit in time and stillsurvive as a family? These are not issues covered under the law - and yetevery bit as important in learning to cope with, while finding strategiesthat either can provide temporary relief, or even just hope for the future. In our experience, it is true that the evaluation process can take (6)months, and there can be many, many legitimate reasons for this.In ourexperience, it was to our benefit overall, as we wound up with a betterevaluation that gave profoundly more accurate, definitive data. This bookjust may provide some rare, highly insightful information you'd never findelsewhere.

1-0 out of 5 stars Little information, lots of misinformation
Very disappointing.Perhaps I had the wrong idea of what the book would cover but I had hoped to learn types of learning disabilities and how to deal with them educationally. That is not the scope of this book, despitethe title. It does not address LD in depth, test results and theirmeaning, educational alternatives, etc.My main concern is themisinformation about IDEA federal law and the rights of the learningdisabled.Specifically, there is the sentence that states a schoolevaluation "cantake up to six months or longer." (p.27). Federal law under IDEA states that the school has 45 days to complete theirevaluation after the parent signs the consent.PLEASE don't wait months tohave your child evaluated.! The earlier the intervention, the better theoutcome.I would not recommend this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical help for teachers who teach reading
Complete Reading Disabilities Handbook: Ready-to-Use Techniques for Teaching Reading Disabled Students. This is an excellent handbook both for the specialist teacher and the mainstream class teacher who wish to help students who have a reading disability. The author Wilma Miller outlines for us the nature of reading disabilities and how best we can diagnose those disabilties. In the chapters of the book she goes on to provide us with ready to use strategies and activities for correcting disabilities in word-identification and comprehension. The book is practical and most useful. I would strongly recommend it to all interested in helping students with reading disabilities.

3-0 out of 5 stars Helpful Resources, but Poorly Organized
This handbook has mounds of helpful information and reproducible activity sheets, but can be overwhelming to sift through as there are no clear chapters or boundaries.Speaking as a dyslexic occupational therapist who works with children who are dyslexic, this book's format is slightly overwhelming at times.Additionally, the activities have "grade levels" written at the top of them which may cause esteem or confidence issues with the children who are likely reading below their grade levels.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource
Although this is a great resource it is a bit bulky. Even so, I wouldn't want less material. I appreciate the reproducible sheets so much. I don't have a lot to say that others haven't already said. I do want to recommend another set of books to use directly with the children. It is four Dolch sight word books by Betsy B. Lee. These don't look that much like little kid books and they are even used in middle school and the lower grades. Look up the author's name at amazon.

5-0 out of 5 stars Reading Resources Galore!
This book may be large; still, it is filled with resources galore! The chapters speak for themselves and are entitled; What are ReadingDisabilities?, General Guidelines and Materials for Diagnosing ReadingDisabilities, Ready-To-Use Materials for Diagnosing Disabilities in theWord-Identification Techniques, Ready-To-Use Materials for DiagnosingDisabilities in Comprehension and basic Study Skills, Ready-To-UseStrategies and Activities for Correcting Disabilities inWord-Identification Techniques, and Ready-To-Use Strategies and Activitiesfor Correcting Disabilities in Comprehension and Basic Study Skills.

Eachof the above chapters are filled with wonderful ready to use assessmentsand remediations. Some of my favorite goodies in the book include;Emergent Literacy Behavioral Checklist, Primary Checklist For TeacherObservation of a Child's Reading Skills, the explanation of RunningRecords, the Graded Word Lists, the tests for Assessing Sight-WordRecognition in Context, and the games included for teaching differentreading skills.

I use a variety of the many tests in this book as apre-assessment at the start of the year and a post assessment at the end ofthe year. The book was well worth the money for me and is used often in myK-3 Resource Room.

4-0 out of 5 stars A complete book on how to assess and help students
An excellent book, especially for a beginning special educator or elem. teacher. A main weakness is that it is voluminous and spiral bound -- heavy but easily ripped! I chose it one semester as required text for a reading methods class I teach to sp. ed. teacher candidates and it is so huge that I told them to bring it to class only on identified weeks. For a professional library, it contains a wealth of all kinds of information on the reading process, assessment & remediation. ... Read more
