Review from Books That Heal Kids
I'm starting to think maybe the greatest threat to education in the United States is teacher burnout. I don't think it's the children causing "teacher exodus."Yes, it's true more and more classrooms each year are full of needy and challenging students. There are a lot of factors that go into burnout but blaming the children is not one of them. From my own personal experience as a school counselor, there seems to be a lack of strong preparation, training, and resources for educators in the area of mental health and learning disorders. Teaching Kids with Mental Health and Learning Disorders in the Regular Classroom is definitely part of the remedy to this problem.When I discovered this resource, I immediately started putting it to good use.

Have you ever been in a student meeting where it feels like the "team" is not really on the same page? The intention to help the student is there, but the meeting gets off course or doesn't take a course. It can sometimes feel like there is a hush hushness about the disorder, confusion about the diagnosis, the "experts" are using different jargon that you don't understand, or there is too much time being spent on formalities like paperwork. It can feel very compartmentalized. I would highly recommend educators use this resource to relieve these problems so you can get to work on helping the student! It's an empowering tool that I absolutely love.

Each mental health and learning disorder is described concretely (about 3 paragraphs), provides behavior and symptoms to look for, and suggests easy classroom strategies and interventions to try. Educators work in busy and demanding jobs so tools that don't waste time are a must.When the words "Receptive and Expressive Language Disorder" get thrown around - people can get lost.It's great for giving a refresher about a disorder or disability. You don't need an intimidating 700 page psychiatric manual. But a practical resource like this guide can be a life saver. How many times have you been required to implement a plan for a student? It can be a frustrating process if you are under prepared. Use Teaching Kids with Mental Health and Learning Disorders in the Regular Classroom as part of your foundation for building the plan. A comment from a teacher after we read through the information on Tic Disorders, "That was great insight for the team." This is a solid resource and I've notice it helps my team feel more optimistic and supported.

If you have a professional learning library in your school, encourage your administrator to purchase a copy for your staff. It's definitely nice to have my own copy but it's not something to covet, make sure to share it with your colleagues when you see a need arise.

A final thought, this guide needs to be part of educator curriculums in graduate schools. I just can't stress this enough. If we want to set kids up for success, well lets set the teachers up first!

Parent of a student at Dr. Stewart's School
I read Dr. Stewart's book when our Aspie son enrolled in Dr. Stewart's high school, Orion Academy, in Moraga, CA.I found the book a marvelous help for me, clarifying points and making clear what our boy needed in order to eventually become independent, to learn not just academic information, but life skills.Our son will graduate from Orion Academy this year, and I don't know what would have happened if we had not been fortunate enough to live close to Orion, for our son will go on to college next year and will leave high school, not "cured," for there is no such thing, but better equipped to handle what is to come.

Dr. Stewart is an expert on Asperger's kids, but more than that, she established the high school to help Aspies get through high school, to prosper there, and to find success.And more than that...she cares.This is reflected in the dedication she has to the kids and to the parents.I would recommend her book to anyone who has questions and concerns about that it is like to have the privilege of raising a child with Asperger's.

Meaningful Interaction Stimulates a Developing Mind

The Learning Tree compares a developing person to a tree with rugged roots capable of supporting a strong trunk that can blossom into one of natures beautiful green creations. All of which takes time, nurturing, and natural resources. This entire developmental process in a human, of course, begins at birth.

During the first few days out of the womb, what a caregiver does when responding to a newborn is critically important. Caregivers who not only cuddle and comfort an infant but who also respond attentively and with purpose during its waking hours, instill in that baby a genuine sense of stability.

This is to say that even though helpless newborns appear incapable of taking in sensory experiences, they are not. The Learning Treesuggests that it is critical when interacting with a newborn, long before it can truly see the outside world, that caregivers expose that infant to a host of meaningful sights, sounds, touches, and body movements.

This stimulating interaction, particularly at the verbal level, lays the foundation for a sense of self worth, a feeling of acceptance and love by others, and a growing sense of intellectual relatedness to the world. Such interfacing begins the transfer of intelligence and emotions from adults to the receptive minds of a tiny child. Engaging meaningfully cannot be overdone. It is the critical attribute for the development of a growing sense of intimacy and eventual independence.

As a child grows, it is important that interaction begins to develop between child and caregivers. The Learning Tree claims that this critical step occurs between four and ten months of age. Using my own granddaughter as an example, the day care center personnel has already taught her gesturing. She can state her needs such as eat, done eating, more, I love you, bye-bye, via gestures. Anxiously, we are awaiting the day when she begins to express herself more fully in understandable words.

As a child develops beginning language, it is more important than ever that a caregiver engages in shared problem solving. Verbal interaction leads a youngster to feel that s/he is capable of reasoning out logical answers. The child starts to feel confident in expressing feelings of dissatisfaction and then moving on to say what is needed to fix the problem. Once again, I watch my own granddaughter turn the pages of books she likes to find the page where a problem is solved.

There is a particular book she likes called, Where Is My Mommy? A baby penguin keeps asking other animals if they could be its mother. She knows from the book's pictures that a tortoise, a lion, a porpoise, a hedgehog, and a peacock are not the baby penguin's parent. Since my granddaughter knows the story's ending because she has seen the penguin's problem solved any number of times. She can't wait to turn to the page to see the baby penguin reunited with its Mommy. Solving this simple problem again and again has real logical meaning for her.

The Learning Tree takes each developmental step from birth until a person is approximately nine years of age and explains the attributes a child would have in order to have mastered each step. Step nine is "The ability to evaluate and reflect on feelings, oneself, and events in the world."

So what does a caregiver do if somewhere along the line, a child does not seem ready for the next leap? For these problem learners, The Learning Tree provides guidelines to 1) determine at which step the child is having problems, and 2) to provide ways to help that child get back on track. Typically, by the time a learning problem is uncovered, a child is already within a school system. Yet, in order to help eliminate a deficit in a child's learning tree, regardless of age, it is often necessary to reinforce an earlier step where the child went astray.

The Learning Tree I would recommend to ALL caregivers because it is always good to know beforehand the stages of intellectual growth to expect. For parents who feel they have diagnosed a learning problem such as inattentiveness, the inability to make generalizations, a problem with cause and effect in a story, a problem with word recognition, a problem remembering story facts in a logical order, The Learning Tree offers specific ways of addressing such deficits.

If you want to know more about your own development from childhood, The Learning Tree is a good read. If you want to ensure a child in your care develops according to a normed schedule, this book can be helpful to you. If you want to help a youngster who has a frustrating learning deficit, The Learning Tree can help diagnose the problem and then give you guidelines to get that youngster back on track.

As a special education teacher I purchased this book because the title addressed the needs of the students I teach in a study skills class.However, the format of the book doesn't offer much in the way of copying many chapters or sections to teach to the students.Some chapters are user friendly, others are of no use the way they are formatted.Great title and table of contents but it is not very user friendly for teaching.

Excelent review of scientific literature on LD
I strongly recommned this book. It is an exceptional review of literature on LD in maths. Good collaborators, each chapter is writen by some of the most popular scientists on the field. Necessary for any serious work.

Research on Math Difficulties
Compared with reading, little has been written about why children struggle with mathematics. The research in the past few years is significantly better than for the previous twenty. This book is an excellent addition to the literature.

If you are a special education who can stand reading research, or a graduate student learning about math education, this book is a must-read. I particularly recommend the chapters on defining math disability and on the use of memory in mathematics.

did not have any useful info on what college programs there are to make a LD students life a little bit easier....self advocacy is a great tool to have but going to college is difficult enough with a ldthere should be programs designed specifically to teach us the skills we will need.

Transition to a great college experience with this book
This is THE book anybody with a disability--and our parents---must read before selecting a college. It officially mentions learning disabilities, but I found much of the material would also be adaptable to other kinds of disabilities. It clearly explains how college accommodations processes legally differ from those which a student currently receives in their high school special education program.

And even better, it clarifies that the student themselves must be the proactive advocate for obtaining their accommodation services. Regardless of an intended major or extracurricular interests, college students with disabilities can't expect others to procure accommodations for them.

Self-advocacy isn't about becoming a young so-and-so, it's about becoming a responsible adult. Even the larger college disability support offices are not going to remind enrolled students to come and visit them. We have to do this ourselves, or go without services.

Because it's never too early to start self-advocacy, the author explicitly recomends the student assume responsibility for their education while still in public school. This is another awesome suggestion which I have not seen in so many other books purporting to 'help' people with disabilities. It's your education, take charge of it immediately!

He then takes issue with 'helicopter parents'. These parents who don't know when to let go of their children, particularly those with a disability. This too is a subject area which hit very close to home to my own college experiences.

My parents generally had encouraged me to understand and exercise my legal rights. Yet, while trying to navigate a very-hastily put together state standardized test program, I ultimately learned my dad was in fact a helicopter parent, who had difficulty recognizing me as an independent adult. Having been the first in his immediate biological family to attend college further gave dad the false sense of entitlement: He was going to 'direct' my college experience to 'protect' me!

He would boast to me that he had spent hours on the phone with administrators--yet, could not produce anything constructive for those efforts. The results were hardly suprising, but they did not enhance my popularity with the professors whose classes I attended.Some of my own college professors actually appeared disgusted when recounting they had received a phone call from him. It was difficult convincing them that he had actually attended college.

Contrasting, my own research and action not only effectively solved my dilemma, but inadvertently ended that same problem for other college students with disabilities. I had effectively made my case as an adult who could and did effectively take care of her own affairs. This is another strategy again recomended by this book.

Finally, it avoids making any misleading recommendations about where to apply. Reiff understands that people with disabilities are free to attend collegeanywhere in 21st century America. So, this is a great gift for the college-interested student with disabilities.
